Gee, I always knew the Lake Media-opoly was bad...

...but I never, until today, realized just how bad it really is!

Sure, I knew that the Lakes routinely violate Swap and Shop's posted contractual terms, when they refuse to give this blog a free listing. And of course, I knew that they would never let me mention this blog in an unpaid "letter to the editor"...

What I never would have dreamed, is that Herschel Lake, Giles County's apparent answer to "Citizen Kane," would not only refuse to accept a perfectly innocuous paid classified ad from me, but that he would do so, even after I generously offered to pay for double the ad space, so that he could run a disclaimer along the lines of: "I, Herschel Lake, do not approve of the above ad, but I sold the space to Kendrick McPeters anyway, because of my firm commitment to freedom of speech."

Caught in the middle of all this is the quite likable editor, Scott Stewart. I sent him a fairly lengthy letter -- which you can read, by clicking on comments, below -- in hopes that he might be able to get this absurd situation resolved fairly. Time will certainly tell; meanwhile, check out the actual ad below, which was so terrifyingly evil it couldn't be allowed to run in the local fishwrapper, even when accompanied with an equal sized paid disclaimer! But be careful not to look too closely at my diabolical words, lest they turn you into stone, like the Medusa of old. Beware! Herschel doesn't want you to see this sort of thing, and a man with as much money as he's got stashed away in the bank always knows best, right?

Scott,

I just got off the phone with Herschel, and I am one unhappy camper. But I will be brief, for your sake.

First, I appreciate your kind offer of a "letter to the editor" regarding the schools, and other symptoms of rampant "governmentitis." I will write that letter and send it to you very soon, even though I am absolutely certain it will be deemed unpublishable, by the "suits" literally upstairs. For sure, if it includes a reference to The Blog That Dare Not Mention Its Name.

Second, I'd like to point out that my ancestors literally bled into the soil of Giles County, and, as a result, I don't take too kindly to being treated in a shabby manner by carpetbaggers. I have always placed the good of Giles County over my own, and fought tirelessly for the rights of the "little people" who live here. At some considerable personal risk, I might add. I mean, would you willingly bet YOUR life and future on the far fetched idea that, no matter how big a thorn you became in the sides of certain "important people," there's not a single "dirty" cop around willing to plant a bag of "drugs" on you or your property? Well, I've done precisely that.

Third, Herschel refuses to run my ad -- which I have attached as a PDF, in case you haven't seen it with your own eyes -- saying that it belongs in the National Enquirer. I dispute that, of course. But the overarching fact is that, the National Enquirer has much, MUCH higher journalistic standards than the Citizen/Press. Ever since The Enquirer got taken to the cleaners by Carol Burnett, they've run a very tight ship. But I generally find that "the whole story" is never presented by the Lake-opoly, at least in cases where I have personal knowledge of the story. No, Scott, I don't blame you... but the facts are what they are.

Fourth, what is there even REMOTELY objectionable about my headline? "Hey, teacher! Leave those kids alone" comes straight off an extremely well known Pink Floyd song which -- I'd bet dollars to donuts -- Herschel allowed to be played on his station, in the olden days when there was more than just country on the playlist. But I guess he's upped his standards, by now, huh? Funny how he always holds his paper to such high standards when I'm the one wanting to PAY for an ad... yet, he's the same guy who gave the dynamic freedom killing duo of James Miller and Phil Willis A WHOLE THIRD OF A PAGE FOR FREE, simply to smear me as a person. It ran as a "guest column" in the January 19, 1993 Citizen; check it out and see if isn't the yellowest of yellow journalism imaginable. BTW, I explained to Herschel tonight how, when that utterly news-free smear of my name and reputation ran, I was in the middle of a deep depression and was very nearly driven over the edge, to commit suicide. Herschel listened to me, but didn't even apologize. Whatta guy! I guess monopolizing all the media in a hick town means you never have to use the word "sorry."

Fifth, I know a lot of people at the Citizen/Press chafe at what must seem like my constant criticism. But, ya know, all it would take to get me off The Lake's case, would be for the Citizen/Press/WKSR to stop acting like a bully that's more interested in running "psy-ops" than presenting the facts. I pointed out to Herschel that the County Commission had, once again, gotten away with illegally passing a zoning plan, and he quite literally laughed it off, saying, "well, we can't catch everything that goes on." Left unstated was the fact that -- now that he knows what Vanzant and Company got away with -- there will be NO forthcoming "better late than never" coverage of the story. Will there??? The fact is that, no matter what Herschel's intentions, life was MUCH better in Giles County before he sold his soul to the local bankers, and bought up all the extant media. We not only had two papers with two completely different editorial slants -- who competed fiercely to report ALL of the news -- but we also had a radio station that delivered "gavel to gavel" coverage of the County Commission. All gone now, thanks to the Lakes! And Giles County has suffered mightily, as a result. You know it. I know it. Everyone on this letter's CC list knows it.

Sixth, when I talked to Herschel the second time today, I asked him the following hypothetical: "Would you be willing to sell me space for that ad if I could PROVE to your satisfaction, that the children really ARE being abused by their teachers?" He scoffed at the sheer unlikeness of the proposition, but I finally drug out of him a concession that "if you could prove THAT, I guess I'd have to." I then explained that normal kids -- the smarter ones, more often than not -- are routinely drugged against their will with brain numbing Ritalin, simply for fidgeting and showing other signs of the boredom which so inevitably accompanies government schooling. I added that, in my opinion, it is also abusive to corral 90th percentile achievers into classes geared for the 50th percentile. First they are given an education well below their level, which inevitably causes boredom, and then this government created problem is "fixed" by coercive dosing with Ritalin. And if THAT isn't "child abuse" of the worst sort, I don't know what is! Herschel wasn't convinced, so I asked him how he'd feel if I came over to his place, and forced HIS grand kids to take Ritalin? He asked me what "proof" I had that this sort of thing is going on in the schools. I replied that I kept myself well informed about current events, and that the whole Ritalin "story" is old hat to most people. Where's your proof, he asked? I told him I'd be quite happy to email him links to news stories regarding the Ritalin Scourge, but he refused to give me his email address. Then he confessed that it just plain didn't matter WHAT I could prove, since there was NO WAY he'd EVER sell me space for my outrageous ad. Well, what if I paid double to run an equal sized disclaimer right under it, saying "Herschel Lake doesn't approve of the above ad, but sold the space to Kendrick McPeters anyway because of his firm commitment to freedom of speech?" "Nope. I won't run your ad. At all. Period. Good-bye." And then he was off the line, just like that.

Well, Scott, I've given this matter a LOT of thought, and I'm convinced that I don't deserve to be treated in this ridiculous manner. I spent several HOURS today, begging and pleading to be allowed to PAY for a classified ad, which, no matter how "controversial" it might be, obviously reflects only on me, and not the Lakes. Is there anything more Kafkaesque than getting this sort of run around?

My mother is in the hospital right now -- quite possibly on her death bed -- and the incredible arrogance of Herschel Lake today took away from me several hours of my valuable time. Time that I had intended to spend with my desperately ailing mother! I have, quite honestly, been violated. And I won't stand for it.

Herschel may think that he is sitting pretty right now, being able to muzzle any idea that goes contrary to the "party line" of Tee Jackson and his banker buddies/owners.... but, the truth is, he is one of the last of the "paper and ink" dinosaurs, and I'm the digital free speech "comet" that's bearing down on the Yucatan Peninsula of local news. Because of my mother's paranoia -- she expects me to get KILLED any day now for running my humble public affairs blog -- and my impoverished state resulting from my having to tend her 24/7, I've not put all that much effort into launching the GilesRebel dot com. But when my mother shuffles off her mortal coil -- and I truly hope that is many years from now -- I will finally inherit the financial wherewithal to spend $50,000 or so on PHP scripting, web programming, and advertising. (Who will sell me ads? The Ardmore Shopper, WLLX, and leaflets printed out of town, for starters.) Because my needs are simple, I can get by on very lean advertising sales, and, since I will be able to deliver a VASTLY superior "free speech" product to anything Herschel can or will offer, I expect The Rebel to quickly get a wide readership. I already have the site fully designed on paper, and it's gonna be much more elegant than Herschel's "deliberately crippled so as not to undercut our dead tree news business" electronic fishwrapper known as GilesNews dot US.

Quite frankly, with my mother in such poor health..., if I was Herschel, I'd start to get worried about competition. Competition??? Tell him to look that word up in the dictionary, okay?

As I said, I feel very much aggrieved. Since dueling has been banned by the liberal goody two shoes crowd, the following is what I propose, should Herschel want to get off of my s***list.

First, have him read this article, which I googled up practically at random:

http://www.cognitiveliberty.org/neuro/ritalin/forced_ritalin.html

Second, assuming he has seen the error of his ways, have him call me (931-363-1214) and offer a heartfelt apology, along with a promise to treat me better in the future. He doesn't have to apologize for running the smear job that nearly caused me to suck on a shotgun back in 1993... but it would sure be nice, if he did.

Third, he will allow my "Hey, Teacher" ad to run exactly as is, in the "Special Notices" area of the classifieds, 1" high by 2 columns wide.

Finally, in consideration of the several hours of my valuable time which his imperial "God-Emperor of Giles County" arrogance stole from me -- not just ORDINARY TIME, mind you, but time I otherwise could have spend staying at the ICU with my quite possibly dying mother -- I fully expect and demand that he eat the normal $36 charge, and run my ad twice, for free.

If all of this is done, I will, in time, get over my currently seething anger.

And if Herschel does none of this? Well, in that case he'll get to discover how pleasantly I behave toward people who really annoy me. My mother isn't going to live forever, and while the old saying advises, "don't get into a pissing match with someone who buys ink by the barrel," Herschel would do well to take note of the fact that 90% of Giles County voters are wired, and that Blogger, owned by mega-corporation Google, gives me all the electrons I want for free. Get that? For free.

If you are anything, Scott, you are a reasonable man. Once, I thought the same of the elder Lake. But no more, not after all that happened today. But why don't you try and reason with him, and see if you can't get him to do as I asked? If all else fails, you might want to play the "grandchild card." Remind him that we have no private school here, and that his grand kids will be stuck with the mediocre "Death Camps for the Mind" that the local government owns and operates. I'm sure Herschel is a big buddy of School Administrator Tee Jackson, but blood truly ought to be thicker than water! The local gub'mint skools will NEVER get any better, if criticism of them is taboo. And if they DON'T get better, what will become of his precious grand kids? Is utter mediocrity and conformity to the lowest imaginable common denominator REALLY good enough for them, in his eyes? I know his standards for running a newspaper are shocking low, but that only hurts the "peons" of Giles County. Bad schools which hammer away at his grand kids' individuality and soul are eventually going to affect him, personally. At least they will if he gives a damn about his flesh and blood legacy.... perhaps he doesn't care?

If he DOES care, I expect an apology and two free ads. If not...., well, I'll take it from there.

best regards,

SITUATION UPDATE:

Scott,

At 4:00 AM this Thursday morning, my wonderful mother, Eleanor Marie Harrison McPeters, passed away and went to be forever with the Lord.

I was not with her when the end came, nor did I even visit her at the hospital on what turned out to be her very last day on the Earth, for I had my time consumed, one way or the other, in dealing with your boss Herschel Lake, a man of such impeccably high journalistic standards that he refuses even to publish classified ads which offend his delicate sensibilities.

I will, for the rest of my life, regret spending all of those hours of priceless time with Herschel, rather than with my precious and utterly irreplacable mother. May God please forgive me, for I rather doubt that I will.

best regards,

Kendrick

First let me say that I am very sorry for you loss. I have lost both of my parents and I know what a great loss this is in your life.

Second:
I think that you are very wrong on the ritalin. Teachers do not prescribe medication. They may recommend that your child be tested but they DO NOT PRESCRIBE!! Any reputable doctor will not prescribe medication without first having a child go for testing first. If a child is given a drug without testing they are the ones at fault. There are centers where test are given but drugs are not always prescribed. There are alternatives that parents are given. A big factor in ADD or ADHD is food and sleep. There again parents have to educate themselves. I was told my child's teachers years ago that he needed tested. They did not say give him drugs!! We elected not to medicate but to change his eating and sleeping habits. Any good doctor can tell you what to do or there are plenty of books on the market. Don't blame teachers. I am not a teacher so I am not defending myself. I am also anonymous because I can be.

For whatever it's worth, the blog posting at the top of this thread was written before I got a phone call telling me told to come to the hospital because my mother had "taken a turn for the worse," as they so charitably described it.

The entire thing was finished, proof-read, and saved as a draft, in my Blogger control panel, but I hadn't planned to actually post it, until I found out whether my letter to Scott Stewart had resulted in a reversal of Herschel's irrational "let's coddle the teachers" position.

I had planned on giving him until the last minute before the paper went to press -- note, BTW, that there is STILL time to run that ad, albeit in Section A, rather than the classifieds, should Emperor Lake change his exalted mind -- but, now that my mother has died on me, I frankly don't care all that much about sparing Herschel's feelings.

So, I went ahead and clicked on the "publish" button. Maybe Herschel will come to his senses, realize what a jerk he's been, and publish my "Hey Teacher" ad in tonight's paper... but right now, I just don't give a rat's ass one way or the other. (Yes... there I go blatantly breaking my own blog's anti-profanity rule! So, sue me, or get your own blog... whatever.)

Assuming that this explanation clears up whatever puzzle might have been created by the date stamps on my posts... I guess that is all. For now, anyway.

I know that, of course. *sigh* Right now I'm not all that interested in debating the govskools.

Let me just cut to the chase, and say that if govskools weren't so damned boring to intelligent little boys, that they'd be less inclined to act fidgety and daydream -- acts which, all too often, lead to forced drugging with Ritalin and/or Paxil.

And just for the record, I don't really blame the teachers for the utter boringness of most classes. Since I'm not in charge of things, they aren't in charge of the schools, and aren't really responsible for the abuse that is inflicted on poor innocent children. They're just following orders ya know, just like the Nazi death camp guards. I guess, as things stand, the teachers are unionized, and they could in theory go on strike to protest the sort of things JT Gatto objects to. But I won't be holding my breath waiting on that blessed day. Will you?

I've never commented on this blog but I just want to say that I went to school with Kendrick. He is older than I am but I remember him. What I remember is he was one of the smart kids. He didnt bother anyone and kind of kept to himself. He was never ugly to anyone and if I'm not mistaken got teased somewhat for being "different". I know he had friends b/c they would be together at school so he wasnt really a loner. He wasnt a bad different just the kind where he stayed to himself or with his unit of friends, did his work, minded his own business, that sort of different and unfortunately that got him teased. I always felt so sorry for him because he has as much right to be himself as anyone else does then or now. When I found out about this blog, I was personaly glad he had come out of his quiet shell. He's not a bad person from what I've ever seen and I admire him for standing up for what he believes is right. He's been the underdog so he knows how it feels. He stands for something. The right of free speech. My parents have always told me "What you do today, you'll
have to sleep with tonight and if you belive in something with all your heart,go down fighting for what you believe in. Other folks dont have to agree with you but they will respect you for making a stand. Say your prayers every day, keep your name clean and you'll always have something to be proud of". I think that's all Kendrick is trying to do And if that makes him anything but a person of his convictions then so be it.

(Sorry for all the re-post-I put it in the wrong place.)

Anonymous, please feel free to post that anywhere you like, as many times as you wish! I have a bit more to say later, but for now let it suffice that I believe your remarks were the nicest I've ever had said about me (other than by my mom or other family member) and are WAAAAAAAY better than the vile attacks I've had to endure seeing posted on this blog, sometimes even in regard to my wonderful mother.

And I appreciate your kind words more than you will ever know, especially coming at this rather difficult time for me. I only wish -- and please don't take this as anything but melancholy thinking on my part -- that you'd posted them sometime before my mother died. She was always worrying so about "all the enemies" I was making via this blog, so it sure would've been nice to have been able to read your message to her, so she could see that there were people who viewed me in a positive light. Ah well, it wasn't meant to be, I suppose.

More to come, later, my dear anonymous friend.

Kendrick, When dealing with men like Mr. Lake, just always remember the following quote by: Ortega y Gasset

First of all, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Regardless of differences of opinion, we are all human beings first. I do not agree with most of your opinions and at times am adamantly opposed to some of your views, but that will not keep me from praying for you. I do hope God gives you solace in your time of grief.

Secondly, on the issue of Ritalin, I must restate what one poster has already mentioned, that teachers do not prescribe medications. Physicians prescribe medications. Neither do teachers take students to those physicians for treatments or consultations. Parents do that, so teachers do not recommend to physicians that children be prescribed Ritalin.

In addition, I am certain that the large majority of teachers (there are always a few, no matter the profession, who are not adept at their jobs) never suggest to parents that their children take Ritalin. The only thing that teachers may do is make a referral that a child be tested for possible learning disabilites if that child is having difficulty in the classroom. If the child is deemed to be in need of assistance, i.e. modifications, then a team of parents, teachers, etc., determines what the educational modifications will be. Those modifications also do not include the taking of medications, but rather things that may be done within the classroom to assist the child in learning. In actuality, it is often the parent who requests the testing.

Furthermore, if you were to ask most teachers, they would tell you that they themselves think Ritalin to be vastly overprescribed for ADD, for ADHD, or for any reason. It is always the parents' decision whether to require the child to take Ritalin or any other medication. Most teachers will tell you that there are many modifications that may be implemented in lieu of Ritalin to assist the child in focusing in class and being more successful.

Moreover, on occasion (and unfortunately a bit more often than most might realize), some parents actually request testing for their child for the sole purpose of trying to find a reason to be able to get a prescription for Ritalin. For those parents, it is much easier to simply place the child on drugs than to work at developing the parenting skills needed in order to be able to manage their own child. They want an easy way out rather than making the effort to discipline the child. I know of at least a couple of cases in which, when school reconvened after summer break, that parents actually stated that they had given the child Ritalin all summer but now that school was back in session and they did not have to "put up with" the child all day themselves that they would be taking the child off the medication! Astonishingly sad, but true nevertheless. There are even some cases in which it has been discovered that the parent has requested the testing process in order to get the child a prescription for Ritalin so that the parents themselves would have access to the drug for their own personal use.

I certainly do not mean to disparage or blame parents in general; most are truly trying to do whatever they feel is in the best interest of the child. Some agree to giving their children Ritalin because they lack the knowledge of other alternatives or simply because they trust the prescribing physician unquestioningly (as often even intelligent people do, on the assumption that all doctors are by definition intelligent and therefore theirs must know what is best). Others have just become frustrated and can no longer cope with their frustrations, and then there are those whose purpose is specifically to make it easier upon themselves.

As for your accusation that teachers are child abusers who recommend coercively dosing their students with Ritalin and force parents to do so, it is not only utterly unfounded but also grossly offensive to those who dedicate their lives to children in what was once, and still should be, considered one of the noblest of professions. Undoubtedly you may search the web and find and cite some position papers or such by some author or other in an attempt to justify your misguided opinion. Any such reference will be just that, an opinion.

Several times on this blog I have read posts which indicate that your educational experience was unfortunately and sadly not a pleasant one. Many of those posts seem to refer to the way in which you were treated by your peers. I cannot help but wonder (and of course it is only an opinion on my part) if your apparent hatred for and anger toward the educational system and all things government related is rooted in the deeply regrettable way your peers treated you during your youth. As I will pray for comfort for you in the loss of your mother, so will I pray that you may some day be able to focus not on what you perceive to be wrong with this world but instead on the joy that is life.

Surely you don't have to be a "weird little kid" to look at the education system and realize it is broken beyond repair. Of course there are great teachers, I had some. They taught not only their subjects but sat at the lunch table with us and taught manners and discussed various topics. Of course there are those who totally destroy the image of teachers by their low character and behavior. That's just the way it is in any profession. The problem is that while there are many excellent teachers they continue to bite their tongues and allow others, many times those who are the most worthless, to speak for them.
A couple of questions to consider, has the education system and Giles County in particular, actually provided the education they claim? Consider that graduation rates have improved and test scores have gone up but many of those graduates can not make a coherent sentence, find four out of five states on a map or know whose picture is on different denominations of U.S. currency. Most of those who continue their education spend their first year of college in remedial classes. It’s not much of an education when you’re teaching the test instead of the subject, when kids are required to recite rather than think.
We spend tens of thousands on such great sounding classes as nanotechnology with less than ten students but many seniors can’t take the classes they want and need because they are scheduled for the convenience of the teacher or the class is filled up. We buy hundreds of computers each year and kids spend hour after hour on them, but if the power goes off they can’t do simple math. Ask your kids how many theatrical movies they watched in any given month? You may be surprised.
We send children to school during the hottest period of the year, cause unreasonable scheduling problems for parents because teachers preferred to have the year broken up with more time off.
On paper all looks great but when you dig a bit and realize the standards have been lowered so much that a child graduating with honors is three to four years behind students in other countries. Even the state has admitted that we have lowered standards so much Tennessee has fallen behind even Mississippi and is in the lower forty percent of the country. Please before you come back with we need more money, keep in mind that D.C. spends more than any school system in the country per student and they come in dead last.
So what is the answer? Part of the answer is to put teachers back in control of their class.
Raise the standards for both students and teachers. Stand firmly behind the teacher as a resource not over their shoulder as a hindrance. Require greater discipline at all levels. Do not allow teachers to be bullied or be bullies. Get rid of the kids, after their parents have been made to attend at least one day of classes with that child, who have no interest in learning and only make it harder on other kids. Put a greater percentage of the current money directly in the classroom instead of administration. Allen Barrett

Kind of Ironic, ain't it? Or, would it be called symbolic?

You are welcome for my comments and I will say I meant every word I wrote. I too wish I had commented earlier so your mom could have known not everyone is against you but I will say this and hope it makes you feel better. You probabaly know our moms know us inside and out and I'm positive your mom knew you are a person of your convictions. It sounds like you got that from her after reading the posts you have written about her. There is nothing you could ever do that would have ever made your parents stop loving you then or now. I know you're not a parent but I am so I can assure you the love is unconditional. So with that being said, just know she went to be with your dad knowing what a good person you are and your parents are your guardian angels. They and GOD will watch out and take care of you, even when things get a little rough. I'm sure you have always and will continue to make them proud. Feel better soon and my prayers are with you.

I agree with Mr. Barrett on the fact that school starts WAY TOO EARLY!!! It is too hot in August for anyone to be going to school. Thats usually the best summer weather. I say take back the fall breaks (most people have a hard time finding babysitters) and give them two or three long weekends instead.

I hate to argue, but not having a fall break and then having 2 or 3 long weekends will not have you starting school later. The students must go to school 180 days. If you remove the fall break (5 days) and add 2 days for long weekends, the school year will now begin on August 4th. You must be willing to go later in the year at the end to start later in the summer. That will put semester tests after the Christmas break. No student wants to have to study during their holiday break. The committee has looked at all the possibilities available and came up with the one that suited the majority.

With the high price of fuel, I wonder if anyone has ever considered dropping to a four day school week? Stay a couple of hours over each day and have Fridays off. Think what it would save on gasoline and diesel alone!

Guess that wasn't a worthwhile question, because it wasn't something designed to hurt or embarrass someone. Typical.

Guess it wasn't a worthwhile question because having teachers spend ten hours a day with the kids that are driving them crazy in only seven hours is an impossibility. It may seem simple to anyone who hasn't spent any time in a classroom to just add two hours to the day but the kids couldn't handle it and teachers could not possibly take anymore.

honey,
I totally agree with you. But the problem with rude and disrespectful kids is an entirely different issue in itself.
I was simply throwing out something as a suggestion in view of the gasoline and heating oil prices.
