What Is Going On In Elkton?

Elkton annexed the area of the Shady Lawn Truck Stop but can’t provide services. They had money to build a sewer line even got the OK for a grant to match the money but then they spent the money on a walking bridge and trail. Suddenly the grant was taken away because the city no longer had the required money to match it. Now the state has condemned the sewer system at the truck stop….. and just guess who the city of Elkton wants to pay the $250,000.00 price……. Giles County taxpayers.?

Clearly the city has been irresponsible with the money they had, and now wants everyone else to pay their bills. The county is already looking at a property tax increase because our own leadership problems why should we also be required to subsidize the stupidity of the Elkton leadership. Allen Barrett

I'm sorry Elkton is in trouble, but if the county pays them out, then Minor Hill and Lynville could get in the same shape and the county would have to bail them out.

What happens if the county don't bail them out?

Looks like the ant bit the elephant in the rear end, can't get his teeth out, & can't swallow. Best remedy is waiting till the elephant sits down & things might return to normal without an EMS billing to extract the ant. Darwin say results find solutions.

"subsidize the stupidity" was an accurate even brilliant comment for the situation in Elkton. The people in Elkton don't pay no city property taxes so they can come up with the dough. The city made a land grab and can't meet their obligation so tough, kick the bums out.

Everybody is avoiding Elkton these days anyway. Who ever heard of a 45mph speed zone from beginning to end in Elkton. It is ONLY a speed trap ... and folks, like me, who always stopped in Elkton to buy gas and snacks NOW go AROUND Elkton on the interstate and on down to Ardmore and Huntsville. If Elkton officials can't figure out that speed traps drive customers away and as a result LOSES INCOME for the city via taxes, they deserve whatever happens. Get rid of the speed traps and you might see more income coming into your little city so you can pay your way. Keep the speed traps and continue to dry up on the vine.

I'm glad to see that someone else besides me is avoiding Elkton. I used to stop at David's Market to get gas on my way from Ardmore to Pulaski to work but I also avoid the area because of the speed trap. I am not a habitual speeder but in the morning I have lots on my mind and don't always think about where the speed limit starts and ends. I can understand the speed right in the town but that would be a mile at the most. I hope the funds from speeding tickets is making up for the lost revenue from sales. I wonder if David's Market has complained or maybe they don't know why business is down. I used to get gas a couple times a week along with a drink and snack. That has to be missed if others are doing the same that I am.

Speed limit in Elkton is 45 MPH. But the police will not stop you unless you are doing 15 miles over the posted limit. that means you have to drive 60+ MPH to receive a ticket in Elkton. If your mind wanders enough for you to drive 15 miles over the speed limit, you should be stopped.

Someone, probably the Elkton cops or their family, is trying to convince us to do "60+" in Elkton before we are ticketed?? Ha. Ha. I got a ticket and I wasn't doing much more than 50!!!!! It is a speed trap and David's should be missing the money I spent there too on gas and snacks and lottery tickets. Riddle me this ... if officers don't ticket folks unless they're doing over 15 miles per hour, why did the city (who can't pay their bills now) buy all the 45mile per hour speed signs??? Why unless they intend to ticket everyone doing five miles over 45??? The signs certainly aren't for beautification. And they've cost the merchants in Elkton dearly. So what's the deal??

I think it would be ridiculous to assume the police will not give you a ticket unless you are going more than 15 miles over the speed limit. I know they do. No, my mind is not going to wander that much but who would take the chance of going that fast in a 45 mph zone. I might fudge by a couple of miles but no more. I'll take my chances on the interstate since I can get to work faster, I don't have to dodge tractors, school buses and slow pokes there. I hate that the folks are losing money trying to stay in business though. I'll just buy in Ardmore before I leave home and hit the interstate.

I love how people on this site leave the discussion when they know there is no rebuttal and run off on another tangent that has no bearing on the subject at hand. I am just waiting for someone to say "Oh yeah...well my dad can beat up your dad."

By the way, it's not the illegals sucking the life of the country...it's the leadership.

With the city of Elkton being short on funds, and also with the price of fuel, why are the police cars being driven back and forth to Columbia ever day?

If I owned a business in Elkton, I'd find out because it just shows the brains behind the mouth (or keyboard) ain't too smart if they can't figure out why their little metropolis is drying up and other places like Lynnville and Ardmore is alive and well.

Residents of Elkton do pay city taxes, and we haven't noticed any lack of traffic. If fact we thought that the price of gas these days would have limited the passing parade of cars, trucks and suvs. However, traffic seems to be heavier than ever.

Well I do wish you all would get your facts right before you print something to be discussed about, first let me tell you that Elkton has never had a grant for sewer, The Waste Water plant that Elkton now has supports Elkton School and this was not done by a grant, The City of Elkton and the Giles County Education System paid to have it installed. Shady Lawn Truck Stop has been in the City Limits of Elkton since the early 70's. The old bridge was restored by the EHS with Monies raised and a grant from TDOT... Not from the City..Its true that The Truck Stop has Septic System Problems, This came up like overnight The City of Elkton Called up our Engineer Firm in Nashville to see how we could help, not only the Truck Stop but the Entire Exit 6, There were several options that we looked at, The quickest and the easy one, would be to run a Line from the Interchange to our waste water plant....Keep in mind there are approx 35 jobs at Shady Lawn Tr uck Stop, Can GILES County afford to lose that many jobs? As you know we just built a Fire Hall with out a grant, the entire cost was the City of Elkton, and we are making payments, The County receives tax revenues from the truck stop just like Elkton, there are other cost beside the 250,000. that we asked the County for. Nothing has been said about the Giles County Ambulance sub-station located in Elkton for the SOUTHERN PART OF THE COUNTY that the, City pays the entire expense even to include the telephone, provides Living space to include a garage for the Ambulance. Elkton is not asking Giles County to "Bail us out" We are just trying to save Jobs, and make Giles County grow....My Cell phone is" 931 478-0739, and I am the Mayor of Elkton, I do hope I have explained whats going on in Elkton, Thank you, Bill Ware

The County pays for the EMT employees and for the ambulance, gas, etc. Elkton volunteered the space since you already had it.

Mr. Ware are you saying the county has no expense in the ambulance service provided in Elkton? I have been in ambulance committee meetings where the expense at Elkton was discussed, are you reimbursing the county or do they simply not pay anything at anytime?

The City provides the Untility to include the telephone, City receives nothing from the County on the up keep of the Ambulance Sub-Station...I think the point that I was trying to make was misunderstood when I was answering the Blog on where Elkton had a grant for Sewer service and spent it on the old bridge and they wanted the County to bail us out, I was trying to point out that Elkton also provides for Giles County.. Now for some insight on the Elkton Sub-Station, We took our Community room and converted it to quarters for the EMT's at our exspence around $6,000.00, We raised money for the Garage to house the Ambulance, the County did provide 6,000.00 toward the garage, however the garage cost over 24,000.00. The Ambulance Service is needed to Support the lower part of the County, and I support the Sub-station. I hope this explains why I added the Sub-station in my original responce to "Whats wrong in Elkton" Bil Ware

But didnt you ask the county to help with utility expenses and fail to turn the figures in?

Where in the world did you get that Information? Who would request something without providing Data? This is the last time I am going to respond on The Elkton Sub-Station, However I will inform you on why I requested the County to help with the utility's, When the County put the Ambulance in the Northern part of the County I was informed that the County was paying the entire cost of the Sub-Station to include all the Utility's, I felt since they could do that, It would only be fair if the County helped helped with the Utilitys, Data has been provided more than once, again I am not going to go back and forth on this Issue I have tried to explain the Blog on whats going on in Elkton, and if I have not? sorry but thats it finished. To Bill Ware
I hope you do come back and take a peek because I'd like some answers. I agree with you entirely that funding of utilities should be the same in Elkton as well as for the N end of the county or any other area. If you have turned your figures in repeatedly, who did you turn them in to and why did you not get the funding? Who are your commissioners? Surely they could and should do something about this.
