What Happened With Commissioner Bill Holt At The Little League Ball Field?
I have been bombarded with questions about what happened at the Little League ball field when Commissioner Holt's grandson wasn't chosen for the All-Star team. I have been accused of covering this up and protecting Mr. Holt because I had not posted it on this Blog. I want to assure folks that there has been no effort by me to cover this up, I simply was not there when it happened and could not get direct confirmation until recently.

I heard from a board member the issue of Bill Holt will be addressed at tomorrows board meeting. 5:00pm board of education. Lets see if the board really addresses the seriousness of Holts shameful behavior. My guess is he will get a pay raise or award.
It will be like everything else and swept under the rug. Zero tolerance does not apply obviously to school board members and employees. Shameful.

He is supposed to set a good example for all school kids. His actions affect them, therefore if he does something that is not a good example, he should have to answer to it.

Agree with 12:30 but also believe he has violated his responsibilities as a commissioner. Do you think that will be addressed by the county commission?
Isn't he going to have to answer for it without trying to embarrass him in a public manner such as this? This is getting a lot like the police blotter in the local paper. I hope we aren't letting jealousies cloud good judgment. The Golden Rule and not resentment or situation ethics would/should apply here.

Holt himself made a PUBLIC fool of HIMSELF in front of family, children, parents, grandparents, ballpark officials, Holt's friends and possibly visitors to Giles County. If Holt HIMSELF DOES NOT CARE HOW HE ACTS IN PUBLIC, THEN HE IS FAIR GAME. I think Holt should resign from the county commission and be removed as principal of PES. I was at the park. Bill Holt went on the field in front of all the children, coaches and parents. He went screaming and using words that he should not have been using in front of the children. He first went to the board members that was presenting the trophies to the children and then went to the coaches and wanted to know why they did not vote for his grandson. This was done when the 10 year old all-stars were receiving their trophies, so the children heard every word he said and also the parents who were trying to get pictures. He also showed his butt after the closing ceremonies. He is the principal of the elementary school were most of these children attend and he should be setting a good example for these kids. If he acts anything like that at school then he should not be a principal.

Please...if you hold a public position such as Holt does, then, yes, he should be held accountable for his actions. My goodness, he is a grown man with childish actions. There are plenty of us whose children/grandchildren that are deserving that do not make an all star team, but we take our disappointment home and deal with it there. That is what is wrong with today...our morals and ethics are getting less and less...and no one is held accountable anymore. I am surprised he did not start throwing punches too.

Do the citizens of Giles Co need further proof that the "news"paper is simply a paper with some stories that by any intelligent standards are extremely newsworthy are censored. Although I am a supporter of the board member mentioned and have no quarrel with Bill Holt, the fact that these prominent citizens publicly engaged in activities that should have been front page headlines speaks volumes for the credibility of our only "legitimate" newspaper.
Had WAB, Don M, Deanna, Callie, or myself, Carolyn, who regularly post and identify themselves done the same things as these two individuals, do you think for one minute it would have been squashed. This omission of news should be reason to boycott this worthless paper. These two people chose the public limelight and chose these inappropriate actions. Wonder what the cost in gratitude will be to Mr Lake for keeping this all under wraps? I am not a fan of trashing reps, but I am less a fan of cover-ups. I knew things at the paper were bad, but this is blatant, even for them. They have outlived their usefulness as publishers, and even when down to once a week, the usefulness lies in lining the garbage can. These two events were news, regardless of where one stands on the issues.

You asked about any solutions I might offer to things you see as problems. Let me ask you the same question. What would you propose that the citizens of Giles County do with the publishers. Should we tar and feather them and run them out of town on a rail? Should we boycott and march in front of the building? Better yet, why don't we just have a lynch mob go get the publishers and hang them on the town square? Would you be happy with that? Just some suggestions.
I'll answer that question 8:26. Do what I do. Don't take the paper anymore.
Everyday someone in Giles County shows their backside in one form or another and it does not make the news. You are assuming this board member is guilty as charged-who made you judge and jury-remember it's innocent until PROVEN guilty. There are all kinds of scenarios that could have taken place they could have been defending themselves and the person who was the aggressor could have pressed charges, why slander someones name until all the facts have been gathered?
What we should do is let them get all the facts and then see what the outcome is. If guilty by all means publish it, if not no defamation of character from charges will result.
Just because someone holds a public office does not make them automatically guilty or mean that something is being covered up. The news agencies have the responsibility for reporting facts and you can't do that if all the facts aren't in, and until they are reporting something like that would be causing a rumor mill-this blog is a great example. Someone said a board member was arrested and everyone is screaming off with their head. give them a break until you know what happened. I don't know them personally but I do know by there actions they are one of the board members who are trying to do the right thing.
As I said, I am a supporter of this board member and have no quarrel with Mr Holt. They are public figures however and as such, the actions should have been news. I never said they were guilty, never implied it, and the childish poster who spouted off about tar and feathering, etc is reacting like a 5 yr old. It was news. PERIOD. When/if further info becomes available, it will also be news. Good or bad, prominence in a community should not be the standard as to whether the paper is allowed to publish a story. Who has the final say, officially, on whether a story is printed? Does anyone know. Is it the Lake family? I emphasize the word "officially" here.

No, it was not a childish post. I wrote it, and I meant it. I believe there are some mean and blood-thirsty people on this blog.

So you think the paper should publish a story on everyone who gets arrested whether or not they have all the facts in place and possibly ruin someones reputation. Running a story and posting the arrest blotter are two different animals. Yes I believe if one persons arrest is published all should but until the facts are in no story should be run-regardless of who it is. Just a question if you were arrested should a story in the paper be published? All I am saying is a story requires knowing the facts and until those are known nothing should be officially published but the police blotter.
This board member is a good example not many knew it was them until 1 person pointed it out. Mrs. Rhonda Turner is a school board member and was arrested on 4 July for aggregated assault. This resulted when Mrs Turner interceded in an argument between her mother and aunt. Mrs Turner thought her mother was about to be physically harmed and stepped in.
The aunt mistook her cell phone for a handgun and called the police. There was no gun involved. The aunt filed the charges but after she calmed down withdrew those charges.
There was no attempt by me to cover-up this information I was simply out of town since Thursday night and unable to post. Allen Barrett

Bill Holt has a nasty temper and I wish he would resign as principal. He puts on a front and some people think he's just great but he is a big ol perv. He has made a lot of comments about the teachers at PES through the years. He made a sexual comment about a couple of teachers that were pregnant at PES years ago. I know this to be true because he said it to my husband when he was working for a company that was building the new addition onto PES. At that time he had no idea who my hubby was and probably still doesn't remember even though we had a child go through PES since then!

would love to read a recounting of the incident with Rhonda. I have heard nothing but the bits and pieces here that might explain her behavior. I don't quite think that I have figured it out yet.
An elected or appointed official is a PUBLIC OFFICIAL and anyone in a position of public leadership (such as a school principal) is a PUBLIC FIGURE. These people are not afforded the same privacy protection as private individuals by virtue of the public roles they have voluntarily submitted to. Their deeds and misdeeds are subject to public scrutiny and professional media outlets have every right to cover their actions. Arrest reports are public record, open to anyone who asks to see them, including the media. Public officials and public figures who are arrested are absolutely subject to media coverage, again, because they put themselves in the public eye. Likewise, their conviction or acquittal should be covered as well. This should be blanket policy for each and every elected or appointed person serving a municipality or the county. Bill Holt is subject to a double-whammy because he IS an elected official and he IS in a leadership position in our school system. That he chose to go on a public rant was poor judgement at best. It was worthy of coverage.
The issue here is the total lack of professional media, not to mention the monopoly one person holds on local information outlets. Competition is sorely needed - for the public good!! If we had news media that professionally covered the cities and county as they should, there would be no need for this blog!

They are 'elected' officials. It is common knowledge the public holds educators and ministers to a higher ethical standard, as should be. I don't know if I like the man or not, having never met him, but I do know that he raises some interesting and valid concerns on this venue. I both agree and disagree with him at times and time permitting, I offer a reason or alternative position. I wonder why others are more concerned with what they percieve as Mr Barrett's attitude, (which is really quite judgemental when you think about it) than they are with the very REAL issues in our city and county gov't. We all have a right to offer ways to improve our community, but for some it seems more urgent for them to insult Mr Barrett but remain strangely silent on WHY his ideas are so "wrong."
7:52-I also agree with your analysis that ministers are held to a higher standard of moralality, but again, I don't understand your reasoning that this should be the norm. As a Christian, the Bible I study indicates that we are ALL ministers and we will all answer for bringing "shame and reproach" on the LORD's CHURCH. I don't find anywhere in the scriptures that more is expected or a tighter code of ethics for a full-time minister is allowed. Actually I find quite the opposite, which is to say that the individuals who so eagerly jump on WAB for exercising his democratic right to criticize gov't, will in turn be held to that same standard on the final JUDGEMENT DAY. Of course, as anyone knows, if they can provide proof that he is wrong, by showing facts and examples, that is not judging, only expressing a different point of view, but few if any seem willing to do that, which by definition is judging, not to mention a total waste of time if their objective was to make things better. I certainly don't mind if someone corrects my ideas and theories if they can explain why I am wrong but it is quite useless to tell me I am wrong with the only explanation apparently being, "You're wrong because I said so, and no I don't have a better idea and I can't or more likely won't tell you why you are wrong." Nobody learns or benefits from that type of criticism.
I do agree, 1:51, that elected officials should be prepared to have their lives examined under a microscope. In this country, as in all democratic society's, the "people" are the elected person's "boss." The politician answers to the people, not the other way around and if the one seeking office does not give his own family the consideration of weighing the pros and cons of living in the public eye BEFORE running for office, then that is not someone that I would consider voting for as in my opinion, that exhibits an extreme character flaw.

I do hold myself to a hirer standard. At least I try my best to. That was part of my point on my post. We as a society need to strive to be better especially people that are in positions to be role models and/or responsible for children in this community. (And I think a principal and School Board member count as being responsible for children.) I appreciate the feedback and hope I didn't ruffle your feathers. I haven't been on this blog in about a year, but just got on and wanted to add my opinion. As to the "dream team" with Winkles and Barrett at the helm, well I'll put it this way, I'd vote for Rhonda and Billy before I'd vote for one of those two.

If a county official makes one or two mistakes would you call him/her incompetent or stupid? Or would you say that person is corrupt? By the way, it's not a matter of disliking barrett or his "message". It's a matter of detesting his arrogance and, yes, attitude toward anyone who points that out to him. I for one have never said one word in disagreement with him other than the zoning issue. I disagree with him bitterly on that and seem to recall him referring to those who share my view as anal buffoons. But that was quickly defended and excused. And NOBODY I know of on this blog has ever "jumped on" wab for exercising his right to question government. It seems to me that there are several, including me, who point out to him his arrogance and condescending attitude toward those who actually do disagree with him on a particular issue. I strongly disagree with his tactics. He has absolutely no bedside manners. I'll take that a step further and say that I would be ashamed if my minister behaved as he does. And certainly, people will be held accountable for those they cause to become discouraged. I believe those are called stumbling blocks in the Bible.
You mentioned that a person should weigh the pros and cons before running for a public office. That is exactly why I have never done so. I knew if I were not liked by some of the people on this blog that someone would make it a point to try to dig up something to share with the world. And I also knew that I wouldn't tolerate it. So, the best choice for me was to stay out of it.

The board member in question has a notrized advidavid stating her relative made up everything about her just to get her into trouble. The Board member in question stayed at least 10-15 feet away from the woman leading her Mother away. The cousin or aunt has plainly stated under oath and notary she made it up. As far as Bill Holt goes, I truly feel sorry for the embarrassment he causes his family. He has been an embarrassment to them for years. Some on here say the things being said about him are hurtful to his family. Well, yes I agree! He certainly should have thought about the damage he was doing all these years little by little and spared his family by acting like an adult and not like a deer in rut. He has some sort of problem controlling his urges and thinks women are objects unworthy of respect. He is NOT bashful in displaying those urges in public. Is it possible in your world to like someone while disliking everything about them? I submit that no one can truly know the motivation of another’s actions, at best it will always be a mere guess, at worst it is speculation based on personal projections of internal aspirations.

Yes, Holt is no longer a member of the Exchange Club, but still the school board needs to do something about him acting like he did. Since, he resigned then that should show the board and Jackson that he knew what he did was bad. He is the principal of a school and also a commissioner. If he would act like he did in front of all these people about his grandson not making all-stars then just imagine what he does at school. I really feel sorry for the teachers.
Resigning from the Exchange Club is not an admission of wrong doing. It is a forced resignation or another mad fit because it is a sponsored Exchange Club organization and he did not get any pull with the All Starts because of it. I don't think he has admitted to anything.
I have been waiting for someone else to point out the school board has NO authority to hire or fire. T.Jackson is the "human resourses" department, and as such he hires and fires. Yes, at the school board meeting he names folks who are hired, resigned, retired, but the board takes NO ACTION, since, by law, they cannot. So, T.Jackson is the person you need to address your concerns to. And, if someone has a video, maybe they need to take a copy to the central office for viewing, as well as send a copy to the TV stations in Huntsville and Nashville. No, technically you are correct 6:07. The boe does not handle personnel other than their one employee, who is tj. I agree that he is the entire human resource dept. However, here is a glaring example of how things work around here. The boe supposedly has the authority to force tj to do his job if he does not willingly do so. They are his BOSS. I have heard first hand, literally directly from one board member that they can't get involved in personnel matters. When questioned about this statement by asking if the board cannot force their one and only employee to take responsibility for his duties, the reply was, "well, I guess so." (Note the quotation marks)That is a DIRECT QUOTE. Now, if I follow the chain of command it would seem to me that while jackson is technically the one who is holt's supervisor, if jackson can't or as in this case, won't do his job and remove this loose cannon, then he can and should be removed himself. Think that will happen? Someone mentioned the Foster Harlow incident from several years back. Well if you go back a little further, you will remember the history of WHY he was no longer on the hill and working at the alt school. His very public tantrum did not involve any children and was witnessed by a relatively small group of citizens. What's wrong with this picture? The man is an ELECTED official AND an elementary school principal!
Now in a perfect world, holt would take the high road, realize and admit he was way out of line and resign his commission seat and either retire as principal or step down as foster was FORCED TO DO. That's what a REAL man would do. His credibility is shot and when the parents of one of PES students throws a fit because their little darling got in trouble, there is not much he can say, is there? He also owes that much, at the very least to his "perfect" grandchild. Unless of course, he wants him to grow up with the same superior, "I'm better than you" attitude. Some may think he was showing how much he loved his grandson by his fit. In my humble and probably useless opinion, if he loved, really loved the child, he would take this valuable opportunity to prove his love by explaining that we are all sinners and as such make mistakes. Mistakes are ok if one learns from them, accepts the consequences graciously, and tries to refrain from making the same ones again. That would be loving his grandchild. The fit was more about himself, not the child. That much is obvious.
Parents should start a grass roots movement to force or shame holt into resigning. If that fails, tj should do his job and if (when, of course) that fails, then the boe should take out tj and holt.Does anybody doubt that had that been any "ordinary" parent that day that behaved exactly the same way, that we would be gossiping about their mug shot because thmadimere is no doubt they would have received a free ride in a city vehicle?
What about it Mr Holt, do you love your grandson enough to teach him this once in a lifetime lesson, or do you want to intentional inflict a potentially lifetime of problems by allowing him to believe that the universe should revolve around him and clout in the community covers a multitude of unacceptable behavior? I just wish we "ordinary" Giles Countians could rise to the level of intelligence some of you think you have. Maybe then, Giles County would be perfect.
I don't think she was attacking his Christianity. I think she was pointing out as a Christian it is our obligation to the Lord to do the right thing even when it may be hard. We are suppose to be examples to lost people of the world and when they see someone who says look at me I am a Christian and than throws a fit in a public situation they can than say "He is no different than me, why should I change?" As a Christian our responsibilty is not to make others feel we are better than them but to be and example and show them we make mistakes and can ask forgiveness for them, learn from it and than not repeat that same mistake(repent). It should always be remembered in any given situation we are setting an example for someone who will in turn remember how we reacted in a certain situation and choose one day to react or not in the same way. Think before reacting-always remembering someone is always watching!

yes, deanna, I remember the Foster Harlow "incident" very well. But, then it was Mr. Sam T. Collins that DID HIS JOB and removed Mr. Harlow from his position. One has to wonder his motives for his apology. Was he hoping for mercy in the event he was asked to resign from the commission. Situations such as this tend one to be humble. However, I know Mr. Holt and his past behavior has not represented on many occasions that he is remorseful for his actions.

It's sad that teachers are expected to work for such little pay and high accountability standards. Most of the older teachers I know just want out. Holt has been asked to make public apology at next School Board Meeting. Let's see if he has the gonads to do so. He should make an apology at PTO in the paper and at the board meeting so people can see it on 3PTV if they have Energize cable.

I was told that Mr. Holt is asking his teachers and aids now to not be wasteful (making copies) yet he said in front of his entire staff that he could waste if he wants because he is the principle. Now that is a fine leader!

Isn't this a sad situation for our little girls and boys to have to witness? I don't know how he can hold his head up if he said the kind of words I heard he said from someone who was on the field with him when it all happened. I hope he has repented at his church because God will not forget it.
I hope he has repented. I am not the one to judge him. What you heard about Holt on the ball field was probably true. I don't know exactly what you were told, but I was there and he acted very badly in front of the children, parents and coaches. After I saw the way he acted, I heard a lot of parents including myself say I am glad I have no children attending the elem. school. He set a very bad example for our kids that day and the kids will never forget it mostly the ones that were receiving their awards at the time he showed his butt. I would like to know what his family thinks about the way he acts. I know everyone has a bad time every now and then, but he is suppose to be a role model for our children to look up to or go to for advice. If it was myself that acted the way he did that day I would have been taken to jail, but because he is a principal and a commissioner nothing was done to him. I guess after he got home and he started to think about what he did then that is when he started making phone calls to apologize to board members and coaches. What about all the parents and children that was there, where is their apology? This happened about 2 1/2 months ago and everytime I hear about it, I still get mad. He is one commissioner and principal that needs to be gone. If he acts like that in public then just look how he represents our county and schools. The bad thing about it is he resigned from the exchange club, but Tee Jackson should have done something to him. That just shows how much Jackson thinks about our kids to let them be around Holt.

Holt has done it again. I guess since he got away with the first episode with Little League he would throw his weight around again with a woman(men)of course and blessed them out for wanting some "getting in the spirit of the game" music being played at the last home game. One of the women's husband is instrumental in keeping the coach happy and trying to keep him here. Maybe this time Jackson will call him on the carpet and make him go before the board for a public apology. He refused to do so before when Mrs. Murrey asked him to come before the board. Jackson needs to get a hold of alot of principal's and do some house cleaning.
