WAB: Overcrowding in the schools?

In Mr. Jackson’s report he mentioned that there was a growing need for new class rooms to be built. He stated that presently there were no “unused” spaces available in any of the schools. I asked if that included the empty wing at Richland and Mr. Jackson repeated that there were no unused spaces. I asked specifically if all the spaces were being used by students or storage, no answer was given.

Question, while school enrollment is decreasing how can useful space be decreasing? Common sense dictates that if there are less students there would be more room not less. How can someone complain, with a straight face, about overcrowding at GCHS while Richland stands grossly under used? Why if it’s overcrowded are students allowed to cross zone lines to attend GCHS but not allowed to cross over to the sparsely populated Richland? -- Allen Barrett

You don't understand the program - enrolment is declining, but not fast enought to keep pace with the growing bureaucracy.

The statistical breakdown of students at Richland and Giles County High Schools based on the State records for the last year available are as follows.

GCHS has an enrollment of 22.1% identified as African American.
Richland has an enrollment of 2.9 % identified as African American. For Richland that translates into 27 out of almost 900 students who identify themselves as African American. Allen Barrett

Oh no, looks like Richland is going to get "investigated" for having a low percentage of minority students. Who shall we blame that on? Let me guess. The responsibility lies with either Mr. Jackson or Mrs. Vanzant. Something sinister has got to be going on.

I don't think it would take a genious to figure out that the majority of the African American population live in downtown Pulaski not in downtown Lynnville. If they don't live in the Richland district they are not going to go to Richland. I don't think that is illegal or immoral. There is a large population of African Americans who live in poverty. The city has the housing for low income. There are no low income apartments and etc in rural parts of the county.

Why would the "African Americans", aka "Blacks" want any better than low income housing when the government keeps them up? I mean, what is their motivation? Why would they want to bust their asses when they don't have to?

okay way off the subject of overcrowding...now for someone really interested in the subject..Is the reason for Richland being less populated (regardless of color) being blamed on sports being better at GCHS or Bobbi McMasters?

approximately 10 children have left rhs for other schools since winter-time.it's not all about sports - some of the problem is administation (or lack of it)also academics- does the public realize our kids at rhs aren't able to get all the classes they need because of lack of qualified teachers? in the fall, some will be bused to gchs for algebra. others go to local college campuses to learn. meanwhile the parents are paying taxes going towards education here in the county, but have to pay again(college tuition fees)because the class isn't available!

Richland High is in TERRIBLE shape! When are things going to change for the better? The ENTIRE administration needs replaced with people that are reliable and know what they are doing! We want Richland back to the way it used to be and now. I heard that at the teacher appreciation dinner this week only a few high school teachers showed up to represent their school. This speaks louder than words!!!!!!!!!

Well Richland is in the shape it is in because of it being closed to any student except for someone who lives in the Richland district. I remember a time when people wanted their children to go to Richland, they did not want them going to GCHS.

You need to take those concerns straight to the head(Tee Jackson) who will tell you we are working hard to make our school system the best it can be-and in the meantime I'm building myself a brand new office when one of our schools needs teachers.

Have you seen the auditorium at GCHS lately? It is in awful shape. I still do not understand how the board of Education warrants a new admin building when our schools are in the shape that they are.

We the people of Giles County are not doing our duty! We are not holding our elected officials accountable for their actions-we tend to elect someone and than walk away and let them do whatever. I'm just as guilty as anyone. it's time we stand up and get involved in the decisions that are made by our government.

Every citizen needs to drive by the new admin building everytime they're in Pulsaki! It's a monument to corruption, fraud, and vanity. What would you do with $600,000 to a million dollars wasted on a structure that will provide no worthwile contribution and not educate one child???

It's a monument to the fact that spending more money on education buys only bureaucracy and more distraction from teaching!!!

Conservation of resources should be at the heart of education. That statement doesn't mean adopting a rattle snake, bio diesel, saving a tree to create a forest fire. It means living within your means and knowing the value of a home, a vehicle, saving for the future, and not wasting your time when you have mouths to feed. Without honesty and integrity it has no meaning whatever.

So, here we are - a community with many folks on assistance, working two jobs, not having a home of their own, no insurance, no job security, and a 100 IQ (AVERAGE for mankind) that will damn them to a life of groveling because "they didn't apply themselves enough" to comprehend nano-technology. As long as you look up to the big boy who takes food from your mouth, it ain't gonna get any better. Kick em in the shins & when they bend over give em a knee - in other words, get rid of them! If affluence impresses you, but you're always working and broke, consider the three piece suit who raises your taxes because he "needs" it to make things better (for him)!

Unless you are getting kick backs from his almighty postion you should be able to see why so many are upset. There are too many to count, that have identities. Of course you know that, but also know the truth is your enemy.

As for WAB, everytime he says something, he steps on your head. You see, if you step on a snake's tail, it bites you. step on the head & you can walk on. Looking up to see him simply means you are beneath him - doesn't mean you respect him for stepping on your head, instead of tail!

Wrong, indeed! I have absolutely no respect for the man. The truth is my enemy? Come on, can't you come up with anything better than that? That tired mantra has gotten very old. I have nothing to hide and do not feel the least bit threatened by him. So why not try really hard to come up with a better rebuttal, because that one is worn-out and erroneous to boot.
Again I suggest that you name names and offenses here and leave your name with the post. That should be interesting. Step up to the plate and expose away.

New to this blog...but one thing obvious to me - this exchange is NOT about what's best for Giles County, it's about one-ups-man-ship - who can spout the wittiest sarcasm. Sorry if I don't play that game. I don't take sides - at least the sides presented here (negative and derisive). I stand for the side of what is right. And believe me, I have seen no sign that EITHER 'Side' is 100% right!

Put your intelligence to work to move things forward in a positive way. My guess is you all must be aging hippies. You act as if you were raised in the style of sit-ins and protests.

Monday in the Commission meeting, I saw first hand the reason our county is in the shape it's in. Many of the commissioners who spoke exposed their ignorance. Others were programmed with fear and suspicion. Few had studied it sufficiently to understand it. Were there issues to iron out? Certainly, but the sour rotten, "Well, we WON this one, didn't we?" that resounded after the vote, was enough to tell me the truth: Stupid is as stupid does. Are there no qualifications for being a commissioner? Evidently not. As long as there is this type of behavior on the part of the commissioners, we might as well put up a sign at our borders and say: No Progress Wanted Here! The only word crossing my mind during the meeting? BACKWARD! There may have been issues to hammer out, but the baby was definitely thrown out with the bath water!

Concerning the every two years teacher evaluations the legislature is trying to force on Tennessee school districts, I believe it will have serious negative effects on future teacher supply. If this mess is made law, there is going to be a mass exodus of veteran teachers and administrators plus a serious shortage (already exists) of new teachers to fill the gaps. I have heard too many teachers say they will go ahead and retire. Somebody had better wake up on this one before it's too late.
