Flash, Flash, Flash... Cyanide Found on the Square

Why has there been no information about the bottle of cyanide found at a local business on the square? What was it doing there and why has no one been charged with endangering other citizens? What is the status of the bottle now and how long before it will be disposed of? When will the public be made aware of this situation and why haven’t the hazardous waste folks already made this situation public? Why was the public kept in the dark to begin with? Allen Barrett

When will the public be made aware of this situation and why haven’t the hazardous waste folks already made this situation public? Why was the public kept in the dark to begin with?

Are these not questions a reporter would be able to answer before reporting his story? OR are the questions posed simply to get the mind to imagen all kinds of cenacle plots. Cyanide is also used to kill rats and mice. Could it be that the owner of the place of business simply had rats or mice and a long time ago had used the cyanide to kill them, put it away and forgot about it? Could it be the story is as simple as that?

It wasnt there to kill rats. No matter why it was there, it wasnt marked poison. Mr Barret apologized for his mistake. The only wrong information he had was that the business was on the square and it wasnt. He's not perfect none of us are but if people would keep their eyes and ears open, he is usually pretty close to right.

And what was he right about in this story? I see only one statement of fact by Mr. Barrett and that was that the cyanide was found on the Square the rest are questions concerning the situation. Once a "Reporter" reports information found to be untrue he begins to lose his credibility as a reporter.

what are the facts to the story, do you know b/c I was on call the day it happened. barrett didnt report anything other than the fact that this had happened and he questioned why no one knew.the victim wasnt going to lie about what happened to her but she didnt want a big fuss either.neither did her family.they were very concerned about the media not knowing or being able to get to her

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I dont know the facts...thats my point. Mr. Barrett is the reporter and asked the questions of the readers. I dont think anyone will question that the cyanide was there and the poor lady became ill. My point is why ask the questions if you are the reporter? Get out there and find out..that's what reporters do. Reporting is statement of facts not questions on the facts. You missed my point.

No problem 7:50:00AM. These postings are so one dimensional and at times very hard to get your correct point across. Again I dont question that the cyanide was there and the lady became ill. I would have liked for the reporter to have reported all fact such as Who, What, When, Where and Why. That's what reporting is. Not questions unanswered.

Looks like anonymous is once again trying to stir up the pot or has he been smoking it.
Wab writes an entry on the blog that exposes a news worthy event that has been either covered up or unknown by the local media. I appreciate being told about it and there still has been nothing in the local paper with only one mention on the noon radio news.

Now the question is, what is a reporter, other than one who reports? Wab reported and many became informed. Excuse me if I seem somewhat confused by anonymous, on the one hand he continually critizes wab as a know it all, then critizes him for not knowing everything. Wab asked several questions, I suppose to find some answers but clearly to expose this story. I’m not anonymous and thus am unable to know what’s in wab’s mind. I have not made as extensive a study of wab as has anonymous so I can’t comment on why he does what he does. Here’s the bottom line, I appreciate what wab has attempted to do for this county I don’t know his motivation but believe he has benefited the county as a whole. Maybe if wab got a job at CBS as a reporter making about a million dollars a year he would give more answers than questions but wait a minute they already pay some people there more than that and they can’t get it right as often as wab does now. Thanks wab and please keep up the good work.

Howard, Thank you for clarifying that anonymous is an idiot. Okay here's the deal. A container of cyanide was found in Giles Co. and transported in a McD's bag with no public knowledge and all this knucklehead can do is question Mr. Barrett. This is a blog! The GilesRebel.com is not up and running yet. The blog is not a news media. As for killing rats, the only building in Giles Co. that has a rat big enough for cyanide is the board of education building.

Why hasn't the paper published any thing on it yet? I overheard a man at the courthouse tell Mr Barret that it had been removed a long time ago. It seemed to surprise Mr Barret because he asked the man, "are you sure". I was only passing so I didn't hear the response or the rest of the conversation. Anyway the question that really concerns me is if the local media is willing to cover up this extremely dangerous situation what else have they hidden and will hide from the people of this county.

Cyanide Poisoning Injures Local Woman
Posted on March 05, 2007

An unidentified Giles County woman is said to be doing fine after coming in contact with a deadly chemical.

According to Giles County Emergency Management Director Pierre Billard, the incident happened approximately four weeks ago. Billard would not reveal the name of the woman or the business in which the contact took place.

Hillside Hospital notified Billard of the incident, saying that they were treating a white female patient that had come into contact with cyanide.

According to Billard, the patient had been cleaning a rarely used storeroom in a Pulaski jewelry business when she found a bottle with a white powdery substance. The bottle had the word “cyanide” on the outside, but did not contain a skull and crossbones, the symbol for a hazardous material. The woman opened the bottle and touched the powder and moments later began getting ill. She was taken to Hillside where doctors secured the bottle in heavy cotton gauze and placed it in a zip-lock bag. The woman was tested for cyanide poisoning.

Family members of the injured woman called WKSR today to say that the bottle in question was marked “jewelry cleaner” and not “cyanide” as reported. They asked that her name still be withheld.

“They cyanide mixed with moisture in the womans body, causing her to get ill,” says Billard.

A remediation team secured the bottle and did a search of the storeroom to make sure there were no other bottles and no residue left. The team destroyed the bottle and its contents.

“Anytime you find a chemical and your not sure what it is, call 911,” says Billard. “You can also contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Billard also warns to never flush a chemical down the toilet. Call and find out how to dispose of it properly.

At a recent meeting of Rescue Squad members Vansant showed up with Billard in tow. When the complaints began about Billard showing up, uninvited and illegally, at rescue operations the ever alert Janet V. seperated herself from him quicker than from Joe during elections. Agree wholeheartedly the Fire and Rescue Volunteers don't need Billard (or anyone else) supervising or coordinating their volunteer efforts. They've been dedicated, hard working, effecient, etc all these years why do they want Billard fluffing around interferring and getting his mug shot in the paper and taking credit for what the Fire and Rescue volunteers do. Wouldn't be a surprise if some of the volunteers quit over this and they would be justified. All of us who support Fire and Resecue volunteers should be contacting our commissioners and urging them to vote NO on funding a Safety Director.

I just noticed something incredibly funny in this week's paper. It was a letter to the editor wherein the writer was "suggesting" that Mrs. Vanzant was going to offer the budget director (or whatever it's called) position to Judy Roberts.
Here's a news flash: Mrs. Roberts turned that offer down days before the "enlightened" writer went off on a tangent. So laughable.
And these people are smarter than we dumb Giles Countians? What a joke!
It's truly sad that some people are so bitter about the election last August.

the "enlightened" writer wrote his letter last week and it got published this week. But wait judy Roberts didnt turn down vanzants 1st offer of 70,000 it was only after it was reduced to 58,000 that she turned the job down this monday. even then it would have been a 12,00 raise and shes not even qualified to do the finance director job. Greedy. Fact! Can you wonder what the other county employees felt when someone with a lot less education than they have was offered such a hike in pay.

And the "enlightened" writer (aka smarter than the average Giles Countian) is among the small band of malcontents who knows best how we should live our lives and what we should think.
Of course, this has absolutely nothing to do with the results of last August's elections.
Have any of you ever turned down a job offer? If so, would you agree that your decision is none of anyone else's business?

If Billiard is mistaken or misinformed about the cyanide then he should not be the EMA director. The fact is Billiard lied about the cyanide. He lied to the citizens of Giles Co. because he did not want to send anyone into a panic over something as deadly as cyanide.

Just so everyone knows I am the woman who was cyanide poisoned. And to my knowledge the cyanide was disposed sometime in the summer months. Yes, it was "covered up". I was told to please not discuss it with anyone and to keep it low profile. So, if anyone has any questions over the matter I know all about it.
