Say It Ain't So Joe, Say It Ain't So

It seems that the former County Attorney Scott Spear is now an agent for the corporation Ice River Springs. Does this mean a new effort will be made to incorporate the Spring at Campbellsville into a money making development for Ice River?

Heaven forbid should a corporation make a profit in these tough economic times!

Heaven forbid this same company hire local citizens and help reduce our unemployment rate!

Oh the horror of it all.

After the way Ice River was treated, why would they want to do anything for the county. They offered the county a good deal, but a handful of people fought it tooth and toenail.

How good a deal was you give us free water and we'll take and sell it then tell you thanks.

Put the "deal" before the public & disclose what Ice Springs will do & what the county will do. Kind of simple if the facts are laid out!

If it's you give me land & water & we'll sell it, it is a scam. If it means giving away a vital resource that will be critical at a future time, it must be protected for the public!

NOthing wrong with making money, a "corporation", getting a job, or citizens protecting what they have, need, or want! There is nothing right about deception, IF it is present.

Some of you speak of "giving away a vital resource." Well will someone please tell me what in the world we're currently doing with this "vital resource"? If it's not currently being used, then what is wrong with letting a corporation use it? The county acquires a new company, who in turn, provide jobs and also contribute to the tax base. Please tell me where this is wrong?

Oh no, let's think that someone is getting something for free. We tell them to get lost. We sure showed them didn't we?

Has anyone ever heard of "economic incentives"? If we don't offer them, then the next corporation will trot on down the road.

In the meantime, our unemployment rate continues to soar and our tax base continues to shrivel up.

Yeah - We won the battle and lost the war because we didn't give them any "free" water.

As long as Ice River Springs buys the water to bottle at a fair market value and Giles County retains ownership of the spring, this could be a boon to the county. But Giles County needs to retain ownership of the spring and also retain the right to end the agreement with Ice River Springs or any other company if there are any environmental problems or the water source becomes necessary for the survival of Giles Countians.

947 - 950 You didn't read the post - nothing wrong with putting something that isn't used to productive use.

Lot's wrong with giving something away that will have potential critical use.

Lot's wrong about an "incentive" that requires public money to be used for private purposes! Do you say that we give someone free facilities & spending money to hire someone else at minimum wages?

The problem is national - where huge amounts of taxpayer money is given to corporations to move from one location in this country to another. Would you do the same to move a local business from one building to another in Giles County. Would you give the same tax breaks to an established locally owned existing business? He who buys friends gets enemies!

Look around - do you see the old thriving manufacturing environment anywhere in the USA? It's all gone because slave countries gave away internal freedom, citizen security, and environmental safety to "attract" the new breed of mutual fund corporate cartel business!

Something is more than wrong when the most beautiful area in the country, which has some of the best workers in the country can't attract business and jobs without PAYING FOR THEM! Our recruiter wants the pot at the end of the rainbow & we get a honey dipper's pot. DUMB!

Could the way some reacted to IR have something to do with other industries not wanting any part of Giles County?

1:49 RIGHT ON!

1:58 NO!!!!!!!!!!!! It has to do with the industrial recruiter and HIS NEED to CONTROL EVERYTHING!! Also, Giles County has NEVER been a 'teamwork' county; striving for the greater good of EVERYONE. (What a JOKE!) It has, however, ALWAYS been a 'dog eat dog' county where some who 'think' they are 'big dogs' are ALWAYS trying to bite the butt of 'small dogs'. It now appears that the 'big dogs' seem to have a serious case of rabies.
Remember the voting on the Sam Davis Park renovation?? First, ALL 'dogs' voted NO! Then 'big dogs' said 'little dogs' are stupid. 'Big dogs' MUST explain the NEED for the EXPENSIVE renovation of a football field; while MOST of the school are falling apart. The 'big dogs, said there was an URGENT and SERIOUS NEED for an 'updated' facility and the FACT that the 'little dogs' didn't get 'it' the first time around. So, in the 'infamous' style of Giles Co., somehow???, 'it' came up for a vote AGAIN and like magic 'it' passed.
My money is on the 'little dogs' getting skrewed out of the beautiful spring in the North end of 'big dog' county. (Roof, roof!!)

Remember the second vote on Sam Davis Park tax passed because Dan Speer and his coounty commissioner cohorts threatened with another property tax hike. That was the only reason.

Also we need to remember when Ice River was questioned about new jobs, they admitted it would take 2people max to run a filtration plant.

Why did the county buy the spring in the first place and when did they buy it? Just had money they wanted to spend?
Who first owned the spring and land around it?

Everyone needs to remember that Speer was all for and tried to get Giles County to go along with the Milky Way deal. Now, where is Milky Way? Seems to me that Giles County would probably be in a fix right now if he had gotten his way.

Everyone seems to have forgotten that the second time (after Commissioners voted to lease the Spring to IRS)Speer came back to the Commissioners he (Speer) told them they (IRS) had changed their mind and the filtration plant that was promised up at the spring now had turned into two water holding tanks where semi-trucks would be hauling the free water to a plant in Industrial Park South where the 100 jobs (yea right) would be. Anybody with any common sense at all knows that the 100 jobs statement was told just to get the Commissioners to vote yes to lease the Spring. There would have never been 100 jobs, with everything automated it might be 15 and that includes the truck drivers. Go to some of IRS Web sites and check to see if their other plants have 100 employees. No that was NOT a good deal for the people of this county. The spring was purchased back in the 80's to provide drinking water to county residents.
Ice River Springs is not coming for they (I don't believe) will bottle nasty water from Richland Creek which has only been filtered thru the City of Pulaski. They had much rather had the free clean water from up there at Campbellsville. It will sell better.

If the spring was purchased to provide the county with drinking water. Why isn't it. That water would be so much better than Richland Creek water.

If the spring was developed for a drinking water source then Speer's City Filtration plant would be selling less water to the utility districts. That's why the Spring isn't getting developed. He has a head hold on some of the Commissioners and they don't want to develop it either.

Poster 1:49 summed things up very well in there is a way to attract business and a way not to. It is no wonder we are in such a financial crisis in this country and in this county. We need a bonafide recruiter with a proven track record under contract. What does not need to happen is another person in government whose cronies elect him/her to a "business as usual" track record. In this economy it is inexcusable to pass the buck to "hard times" out of one side of their mouth. And, out of the other to say we need to push ahead and stay positive. I am positive we need to sharpen our pencils, tighten our money belts, and elect people who can see problems before they cost us money and valuable natural assets. And, as for the rest of you who cheer on inept leadership, you either do not live here, do not pay taxes here, are retired or are just too far in someones pocket to speak up.

12:15 "the whole National Economic meltdown".....??? THAT'S WHAT'S WRONG WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND SPEER!! YOUR 'LITTLE MINDED' GROUP 'THINKS' THEY ARE THE CENTER OF THE NATION...BETTER YET, THE UNIVERSE.

It is ALSO the FAULT of every CITY voter in Pulaski. IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT THE MAYOR AND CITY ADMINISTRATORS ARE DOING, VOTE THEM OUT!!!!! Giles County likes to 'fuss' and do NOTHING to make things better. IT IS TIME TO CHANGE YOUR WAYS!! Another example of Giles County VOTERS doing NOTHING...the public school system.

As for the comment about retired folks. That was below the belt. MANY retired folks give their time and monies for the BETTER of Giles County. For that, 'still employeed', I AM GREATFUL!!

I am 8:56 and let me explain the retired comment. This community is not attracting younger people to take on the reigns from the retired folks fighting. Have you seen a younger generation getting into this fray? NO! You see mostly those who are retired and are stepping into many of the positions of both fighters and feeders. Feeding off the tables of public office and taxpayers willing to look the other way. On the other end of the table are those of us retired or retiring who are disgusted with "business as usual" and calling out the ones who are overpaid and under qualified or doing a poor job of producing results. But, a great job of talking a good game and rubbing elbows with those whose votes count. Do I want his job? No! We need to recruit someone in this economy that does with a proven record in recruiting industry. Tell me there are not loads out there who would take it with long resumes of results? It is up to the citizens of this county to demand more from their government. I have great qualifications for many things but have never thought I could fly a plane because I know a pilot, or operate on a patient because I read a book on it, and who would let me? Those may be extreme examples but think about it. Someone who is a mayor may know the town well, may be well connected in that town, and may be very likable and has owned his own business does not make a recruiter. He makes a mayor and that said needs to do that without the other. Still, years spent on the front lines of recruiting business and industry with a track record of landing jobs at a salary of $100,000 posted now and we can do better....way better. Plus get jobs here which is what that position is about. Not selling everything out and believing it is in the best interest in these hard times to accept whatever comes down the pike.

202 The situation you describe is not about age or education. Younger is not necessarily better, especially in current times where the liberal elite diploma mills don't have a clue to reality.

Not trying to be smart about it, but think about how sick the process of taxpayers paying corporations for the privilege of working!! Public money should never be used for private gain!

Abuse of public trust for private purpose has been around since the beginning of time. Only common sense and experience work, especially passing it from one generation to the next, working together. It's a deep well - I don't basically disagree with your thoughts

It can be tiresome to hold the line with money well spent vs. money spent well. The difference is on money well spent you get something tangible in return. Money spent well is just spent to pump up a feeling of confidence. Consumer confidence can be like a shell game. Nothing is really beneath any of them. But someone is willing to keep paying more and more in hopes of getting some of their money back.
We need to stop paying for what is not working and start working on supporting a plan that will. Propose solutions that are feasible and spotlight inadequacy and waste. Follow the money and reclaim accountability for who, how, and where the money goes. They really cannot keep it going without our tax support or votes.
