1st Lay Offs In County Government!!!!!

For the first time in my memory there are people being laid off from their government jobs in Giles County. Two people in the Register of Deeds Office were let go because of a lack of funds coming into the office. Last year approximately $24,000.00 in excess fees were channeled into the general fund, this year they can’t even pay the employees. How long before other offices are effected?

After much protestation from the County Executive that the county was in good financial shape I wonder if she might now admit that if the county’s not broke it’s at least badly bent. Even with these revelations there is still no serious effort to cut the spending and more people are being added to Mrs. Vanzant’s staff. Is it possible that the County Executive’s plan for dealing with the unemployment problem is to eventually have everyone in Giles County working in her office?

For several years the county has been spending money like it was growing on trees. Many have warned that the spending was out of control especially when coupled with the facts that so many jobs were being lost in the county. But no one was concerned in county government enough to actually do anything. Some tried but you can’t beat a system built on fantasy, denial and buddies to the end. Even when reserves were being tapped this year to meet an overly optimistic budget some commissioners and the county executive continued to be in a state of denial about the financial situation.

It’s past time to get the county’s finances in order by getting school employees and dependents of school employees off the budget committee, off the Financial Management Committee, and off the County Commission. It’s time those without any understanding of economics, finances and budgets were taken off key committees where they sit numbed by their lack of understanding. It’s way past time the County Executive realize the rosy pictures she presents are painted with the crimson red of deficit spending. As the leader of the county she must become more accountable and thrifty in her leadership.

If action is not taken soon to stop the financial bleeding the county will be in a far worse financial mess than General Motors. Allen Barrett

I have the solution...at least for you. Mrs. Vanzant should immediately resign and appoint YOU to be in charge of the county.

I find it interesting there have been new people hired in the county goverment, but now they have to lay off? Can they not transfer within departments, if the person is qualified to do the job?

Only Vanzant has been able to hire new people for(her) finincal office!
The same office that was not going to cost anything to operate!
This woman has commited nothing short of Fraud when she took this office per state requirements, and has lied to the public, and spent tax payers money like it is a Free Gift to her since she has been there.
People need to look through all the smoke and mirrows and get rid of her.
Phone your commissioner and ask they ask her to step down or turn her over to the STATE D.A. for investingation.
Then she will go for sure.

Why hasn't any of this been in the local paper or on the radio. I remember one Commission meeting where Mr. Barrett was allowed to speak and he did actually ask her to resign for the good of the county. The looks he got from her would have chilled a polar bear.

Can see where you would think the financial office is Vanzant's when in fact she has nothing to do with it, only to serve as a member of the financal committee. She butts in on Garner's turf and Garner cows down and does everything Vanzant dictates. Before we decide the finance office has caused more expense we should find out if any new positions have been added to that office other than those that should have transferred from the various departments. Maybe none added. We do know that Barry Hyatt kept Julie Phillips and sent Jennie Meyers to the finance office in her place. But that was the doings of Hyatt and Phillips. With the condition of some of our county roads it makes you wonder how many could have been fixed with the amount of salary being paid to a lame duck employee being held at the highway office.

Just think of the money we could save if Jackson got the boot! If we went back & undone all his shennagins, there would be more than enough $$$ to balance the budgets & give everyone a raise!

Wonder if MMC would buy his little playhouse on the side of the hill?

You are absolutely right about that. What we have going on here is a small band of complainers who apparently make it their mission to malign and discredit anyone they dislike who holds an elected position. The jealousy and feelings of impotence must be almost unbearable for them.

You are wrong about the folks who you consider the "small band of complainers". I'm not so dumb that I don't know the people who you are always referring to as a "group of malcontents", "followers of the great one", "wanna be in power" etc. Truth is, two of them are working full time, about four don't even own a computer and the rest very rarely even look at this blog because at their time in life and, charitable obligations and personal hobbies, they dont want to hear all the bickering. They have better things to do. Soooooo, even though you think you know who you are writing to, its not them. There are however a variety of people who write in and get vocal if it effects them personally. And no, I'm not one of the "group" that you refeer to but I am a close friend of a couple.

12/7...5:20 PM,

The subject of Julie and Barry....

When your property tax goes up because of this kind of underhinded abuse in county government, we will see what part of your finances is "lightened up".

I bet you are one of the first people in the polls to vote against a wheel tax or increase in property tax.....how do you think the excessive salary Julie is getting is being funded. Believe me it aint Santa or the Easter Bunny...it's your tax dollars. So if you want to keep your money for you and your family...you need to get on the "sleigh' and say no to the officials that are abusing you!!!

9:38,

You are just a person whose hatred for Jackson overrides your every thought...

It is going to take a change from "every" county official (including your buddy, Barry Hyatt) to get county government back on track.

I'm sure if Jackson would have make the same bad decision financially for the county that Hyatt did...you would have been the first one screaming.

Change needs to be across the board...including the school system and your buddy's department.

Quit showing you ignorance. It makes you look small.

Do you think that Jackie's replacement on the hill will make the same as other secretaries or will she make a teacher's salary like Houston and Middlestead? It was good enough for Jackie but probably not for her replacement.

What makes you think it won't be Middlestead? Houston can't hardly do her job now and has already been paid off. Shelia was given a huge raise and knows all the secrets from Davis.

Maybe even play kick the weasel thru the uprights.

Also read the post after it, which shows how Mrs. Vanzant reacts to anyone the questions her actions.

Tee Jackson's new secretary is Susan Angus. She is Edwin Lovell's sister-in-law. Another vote for Tee on the Commission. Doesn't necessarily mean a vote in favor of the board or the teachers, just Tee.

That's not another vote, Lovell has been in "T's" pocket since time one - voted for every conniving corrupt tax increase TJ waanted!! It's called "thank you", compliments of the taxpayers. Just another good reason to remember "NO" when Lovell runs again.
