AUCTION OF HUNTER SMITH BUILDING????

It was finally agreed to sale the Hunter Smith building to the highest bidder at auction sort of. A stipulation was placed on the auction and a reserve of $50,000.00 was set.
If this "white elephant" is finally sold and put back on the tax role instead of being a tax drain it will be an accomplishment that will finally correct a terrible mistake made when the building was purchased over ten years ago.
One incident of interest took place during the discussion of this sale and that was the utterly false statement by the County Executive that there never was a bid made on the building. I along with a number of other people was in the meeting where a man offered a firm $125,000.00 for the building as it sat, I even wrote about this on the blog and I believe there was an article about it in the newspaper, the committee turned down the offer stating they wanted more money. This request for more money was made in part based on the statement of the County Executive that she was receiving offers for the building every week. While the County Executive has had much trouble with her credibility in the past this reached an new low even for her.

Trouble with credibility especially since she made the statement in front of many members of the public and commissioners who had been present at the meeting in which the offer was made for $125,000 and turned down. Another problem is the commissioners wont stand up and call her on the lies but leaving it to people like you Mr. Barrett to do the challenging.

It's not a new low for her!!!
She has lied from the start, if her mouth is moving, is the way you can tell!
Commissioners (at least some of them) know she is not even legal "per state code" to hold this office, and have not had a backbone to call her on it during any meetings for the past 6 years!
How much money has this cost the tax payers ??

(Janet "Madeoff" Vanzant) just another CROOK in my book.

Speaking as a woman, she has set us back by 20 years when talking about a female getting elected to office.
Talk about one bad apple ruinging the whole barrel, just look at the Financial Director Office, under her thumb.

9:56 good point, as far as it goes. Real issue is a county mayor should be accountable to the PEOPLE! Fin dir needs to be accountable to her profession - ethics, etc. Not sure what county mayor's real profession is???

Way to go 5:26; once again, nothing about issue, making it about private citizen....do you not know the difference or just have no interest in your county business, or maybe you were going to post about the building and he beat you to it so you are jealous; grow up, why don't you; Are you one of those childish folks who think if someone doesn't agree with you, they are crooks? I disagree with many sides of various topics, wab included, but I don't become so obsessed with him that I can't even think about my community, but rather have to mull over my next insult of a private citizen who takes time to actually keep up with local events and issues. I wonder what is more important to you; the tax $$$$ involved in the Hunter-Smith bldg or flinging a "zinger" at wab....Never mind, it's obvious where your interest lies....

You should have been a stand-up comic. You "continue" to be laughable, especially when you attempt to define me as jealous of a "private citizen". That was incredibly simple-minded but homorous.
Since you chose not to answer my question about the Financial Director's being accountable to the County Mayor, let me ask you another one. Why is it that when one of you guys say bad things about people you resent, you conveniently excuse your rudeness by saying you are "exposing" corruption? But, Heaven forbid, if anything is said about one of you or your fearless leader. That would be called "picking on a private citizen". Isn't that a bit hypocritical? Again, I await your response to my question.
Oh, be assured my interest is very strong concerning the welfare of our county. You have some nerve accusing me (a private citizen) of anything less. Have a good day!

I have not been involved in these prior posts that go backwards and forwards but I will answer the question for you - the Finanace Director is not accountable to the County Mayor (Executive). That position is accountable to the Financial Management Committee which is mmade up of 7 members, the county mayor being one of them. Kind of like the schools director right now being accountable to the school board.
Please dont come back at with me some sort of argument because I'm not interested. You asked a question and I simply answered it for you as you seemed not to be getting one. You can check my response in the Financial Management Act of 1981 law and you will find it correct.

As I said, comment on issues not people, if possible; Hunter Smith bldg in this case.

Some people get a free pass when they call others names and attempt to humiliate them, but others like me are accused of attacking private citizens if we offer rebuttal or defense of the victims. Why is that? Can you see the slightest bit of hypocrisy in that?

I know this isn't the blog for this, but I think you need something else to think about.
Let's look at what Tom Daschle thinks about us old people...

"Daschle says health-care reform "will not be pain free." Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them."

Shall we all throw our medicine away and stop going to the doctor?

With the obama administration working on health care you won't have any medicine to throw away.
Universal health clearly makes old people an expensive liability and with treatment at a premium you can be sure the most economical solution will be to just kill those who can no longer take care of themselves. Allen Barrett

What IS relevant to me is how some of you treat others who don't share your views. It's as simple as that.
Would you agree that giving some people a free pass on things they say and chastising others for the same thing (double standard) is an issue that needs to be addressed?

The REAL issue is that some people do not want issues in our city and county exposed or brought to the attention of others. They want to continue to control and dominate how things work. Its obvious that those people try to make it difficult on the people who try to keep others informed about what is going on with information they obtain from meetings that they take the time to attend. They make it miserable on people who ask questions. You are not supposed to ask questions you are just supposed to accept and go along. Also obvious that ones who try to discredit the messengers do so to try to keep the messengers from continuing to share information. Do the people trying to discredit the messengers not realize that we are smart enough to know who you are or that you are one of the ones involved in or married to or immediate family of those in government who do not want the light thrown on what is going on? Good grief please do give us a little credit with being able to figure it out. Why don't you go to the meetings. Go enough so that you can begin to hear elected officials tell things several different ways. Go enough so you can see how evasive the answers to questions are. Go enough so you can see which elected officials speak up or cower down to the mayors in the county and the cities. Go enough so you can know what is going on firsthand so you don't have to constantly harp on the messenger. Oops of course you are going enough if you are as we suspect an elected official. I guess if I were you I would also be trying to shut folks up to protect my good salary my good work hours my good ability to do what I want when I want irregardless of what is good for the majority of the people. Just because its been that way for 200 years does not mean it is not time for CHANGE. Look all around us. Why is Pulaski and Giles County lagging behind? Why do other counties have better schools? Better roads? More retail? Getting new industries and jobs? Have you any idea how many people in our OWN community are without jobs now? Have you seen an article in the newspaper about this? Heard about all the plants having layoffs? Why not? Would you open your check book or bank account and throw it on the table for anyone to use? NO! Then why don't you want to be informed because it is YOUR money that elected officials are spending.

Why do you assume that I am not well informed? You know how dangerous assuming can be, don't you.
Let me ask you a question. Granted, there are bad people everywhere who honor no moral or ethical codes, but why is it that all this mistrust and finger-pointing started in Giles County just a few short years ago? Oh, I'm sure you will have a good answer to that one. I don't see all this "corruption" that a small group of people are constantly harping on. And that does not make me mentally lazy or indifferent to what's going on. That's hardly the case.

To the 24 March 9:03 poster who stated, To WAB Sunday, March 22, 9:21 refers to you being some sort of leader with followers. Do you really lead some folks? Whenever I have seen you, you always seem to be "doing your own thing" and not surround by others. Am I wrong?"

I guess it depends on how you define leader and followers. As one anonymous poster likes to erroneously define some people as "stupid outsiders trying to stir up trouble", I prefer the more accurate description of concerned citizens who on some issues come together in an effort to improve county and city government for everyone's benefit.
I have served as chairman and co-chair of such efforts as stopping the huge tax increase a couple of years ago, and the current effort to adopt a County Charter for Home Rule in Giles County. I have been actively involved with such things as opposition to county wide zoning, adoption of the Financial Management Act of 1981, school board reform, budgetary restraint, consolidation of water districts, and quality water supplied to all citizens and a number of other issues concerning accountability and abuse of individuals by powerful government officials.
I have friends and associates with whom I have banded with, at times, to stand against and for certain issues. I would hardly call these people "my followers" as on some issues such as national politics, guns and property rights we are diametrically opposites. I am a strong consistent conservative who embraces personal responsibility and liberties over big government which is more a problem than a solution. So in the final analyzes I'm just one person of many who has seen a wrong and seeks to correct it for the betterment of all. Allen Barrett
