Questions Needed In Advance Of PES Public Hearing?

This topic was taken from the newspaper.

The Pulaski Board of Mayor & Alderman will conduct a public hearing Tuesday, July 14th at 6:30pm at Pulaski City Hall to discuss the Pulaski Electric System.
According to Pulaski Mayor Dan Speer, all questions for the PES public meeting must be submitted in writing to City Administrator Terry Harrison by noon Friday.

Why would these questions now, at this late date, be required to be submitted to the city administrator when it was not a part of Mrs Harwell's 23 June motion setting up this hearing?
As reported and posted by WKSR on 24 June 2009, "Harwell restated her motion to ask for a public hearing so the public could ask general questions of officials with Pulaski Electric System. The motion passed and a public hearing will be held Tuesday, July 14th at 6:30pm at Pulaski City Hall.

Now weeks later we are told that only questions submitted for review by the city administrator will be allowed. This is censorship in its most vile form. Will there be a committee that determines which questions will be asked or will this be left entirely up to Mr. Harrison to choose which questions will be asked? Will these questions be given to Mr. Holcomb to prepare smoother pat responses, he certainly did not fair so well when asked direct questions by the City Council?
Why must this hearing exclude spontaneous questions and follow up questions? Mr. Holcomb has already demonstrated that the veracity of his responses are somewhat less than principled.

Well doesn't "requiring" you to submit your question negate the whole purpose in a public meeting? Shoouldn't you be able to ask, speak, and receive and answer through speaking instead of hearing the sales pitch? ANd yes, why all of the sudden a couple of days before the meeting is it required?

News flash! Go look on WKSR web site now - Aldermen Respond To Mayors Request. Seems the aldermen are fed up with bully tactics. They are standing up and saying no! Not go along with mayor'd demand for prepackaged questions. And canned answers. Go look at the comments. My personal thanks to the four aldermen who stood up!!!!!!!!!

I just let out a whoop and high fived the air. Way to go Harwell, Jenkins, Gentry and Baddour. It's about time somebody stood up for the people. For what is right. Stood up to the Mayor-Economic Director-Power Board member-Speer. For a real public meeting. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa.

Sounds as if the city's big dog has taken some lessons from the man on west hill in how to conduct a meeting. One that keeps the public from knowing anything about what is going on that he does not want them to know.

Help stomp out knowledge of public affairs just follow the lead of the meeting organizers. It may spread like wild fire.

2:36 & 3:58 Do you also think the four aldermen who stood up to the CONTROLING AND BULLING mayor are also "making yet another ememy" and "deem any and all government crooked, vile and distardly"? Or that just applies to WAB? Who is doing the exact same thing the four aldermen have done.....working towards a better Giles County. Sorry if that is hard for you two to understand.

One can only hope the members of the school board will take a lead and start representing the best interests of the children, taxpayers and its employees.

I want to praise Hershel Lake for opening his personal letter to Speer to the public. Many have known for a loooooooooong time Speer is a skunk, just did not know how badly he stunk! Holcomb is rolling in the pee-u, too!

I was one of the 'lucky' ppl who got to take a tour of the PES building upon completion. To say the least, it is nice. REALLY NICE! It has a kitchen most women would die for. The offices are more than up to date and the furniture is A+. What about the black railing in the back of PES. How much did that 'little trim' cost the taxpayers of Giles County?
I plan to be at the meeting on the 14th. Hope you will be there also.

I also plan to be at the board of education meeting tonight. (5:00) Let's see if the board REALLY discussed Holt and his less than manly actions on the ball field...

Power Board is appointed by Dan Speer. He has Jerry Bryant as chair. Larry Polly of furniture store on it. Marcus Houston of first farmers bank on it. Lee Ann Holt on it. AND the Mayor Speer appoints himself to the board. I am hearing that the board gets paid for each meeting and that they get the electric service retirement too. Those are two of my questions for next tuesday nights meeting.

Right on I agree with you. We need more people who do not care about popularity but try to bring about positive changes to "the things as usual mantality".

I am right now visiting out of Giles County in an area of TN that just a few years ago had a lower per capital income tha Giles County and folks living in tumble down houses and third and fourth owner trailers that made most of the houses in Giles County look
pretty good.
They have brought about changes in government and industrial recruiting and as a result everywhere I have gone this week I have seen new housing replacing tumble down shacks and second and third owned trailers. There has to be a way to bring these improvements to Giles County.

We have to find a way to work together to make these changes in Giles County.

I have said many times on this blog that I am not here to argue the merits of whose opinions are better than others. My sole reason for being here is to offer an opposing voice to those who call people names and try to embarrass them in a public way. How many times do I have to say that?
The typical response is that I must be part of the "corruption" or that I am an enabler in some way. Wrong! And no, I'm not a lawyer. Keep guessing.

7:32 your posts are obvious on each thread you respond on. It is almost verbatim on each thread. You condemn anyone from having an opinion on issues you apparently disagree with. What makes your opinion so valid on issues while you condemn others? You have no idea the basis for others opinions whether that be rumor or fact. Yet, you place judgment across the board the same for either. You get tired of the "know it all's" you say. Well, I am trying to be very diplomatic in my post here in explaining my thoughts. But, it seems you offer no counter offer of explanation only your feelings of doubt and disagreement. Doesn't that seem close minded to you? Being purely speculative and trying to understand your stance I will continue. There are many, many citizens that take issue with the way our local government is being operated. Those individuals may or may not base their opinions on fact but, how do you know? It appears at that point you come across as the "know it all". How can it apply to everyone with the exception of you? You mention the arrogance of those who post opposing views to you. Are those persons only arrogant because they have rubbed you the wrong way? Applying as much logic and common sense as I know how to, I can't even began to understand you. You talk about those who are complaining are envious of those in power and wish they had the power. If you really knew those people who you label "know it all's, needy of power and arrogant" you would see how senseless your point of view is. Those you condemn in a way only you understand are retired citizens who have no aspirations of being in political control or in need of power like you perceive. Everyone wants accountability in our local, state and federal government. It is our duty as citizens to raise questions, however unpleasant those questions may be regarding the fundamental basics of how governments is being ran when less than ethical and moral choices are being made. I thought we as a people had come a long way from days gone by of accepting things for face value as the past has shown us how on so many levels corruption, greed and dishonest exists. Some of our own county officials are questioning things and that should be revered but, yet you condemn. I guess those officials don't know what they are talking about, right? Not everyone is being questioned in government. Those who show "arrogance" and nonchalant attitudes toward the citizens concerns are being questioned more in depth because they think they are accountable to no one. Once you are elected by the people does not mean you will stay in your elected position regardless of your actions. I see that we, those who question,no matter how we question our government are not going to please you and those who share your views no matter how we pose our questions. However,I truly believe you are in the minority in your thinking. Any normal, logical thinking person would pause to wonder if accusations that fly could have some validity. You do not from all appearances. And, that is what makes one think your incessant call to berate and belittle those who show concern suspicious.

I stand by ever word I said in the post. I have never belittled anyone for their opinions. Have you? As I have said numerous times, my problem is not with a citizen being allowed to question government. My problem has been and remains the way a very vocal minority does business. You get nowhere by calling people names and by attacking their character. Who appointed them to judge others. No, the truth should always be there for people to see and thereby make informed decisions when they vote. Please cite one example where I even hinted that people should not question government or that I defend those who may be doing wrong.

Look buddy. It was way more than a vocal minority. If you'd bothered to attend you would know that it was a broad section of our county. World War II vets, widow women, business owners, teachers, community volunteers, commissioners. All of us cared enough to attend. I stood for 3 and a half hours. I watched one alderman bring in a bunch of chairs after folks started getting there. Wonder if that was the mayor's plan too. Make people stand up long enough and they'll go home. Seemed like the men should have been toting those chairs instead of the female alderman. Seems nobody had an idea that the electric system paid their top dogs what they do. You would think this was Brentwood. Didn't know me and you rate payers owned a half a hundred vehicles for employees to use as they want. Holcomb said it was to cut down on traffic down town. What a joke. One car is one car whether they drive their own or one WE ARE PAYING FOR. Wish I had somebody pay for my car, my insurance and my maintenance and probably their gas, too! It even came out that night that the ratepayers of electric company paid for mayor speer to have his shiny white suv that he drives for economic development. Ratepayers are so generous. No wonder Speer Holcom and company smile so big.

Power is what you are whining about - you don't have it & we do. You have no access to more money & a big spender with a little brain is lost without money to toss around. You want all sorts of tax increases, trying to hustle citizens that the current high rate isn't fair - that "we" need new takes to impose on everyone to "level the load ". Well, you're more than fairly stupid to assume we can't see your dumb game.

You want to be loved and admired, but you are in a quagmire of hate because no one loves corruption, thus no one loves you.

Name one thing that went your way over the last couple of years. Adjust, learn how to play the harp.

I think what you just said is another example of the kettle calling the pot black. And the irony of it is that, in reality, it's you guys who so desperately want POWER. I have none and could care less. I mind my own business and do not run around town calling people names and accusing them of all manner of things. So I'm not the one who is jealous of others who have it, because I don't want it. So please enlighten me as to what you think my "dumb" game might be. What a laugh.
You asked me to name one thing that went my way over the last couple of years. Well, how about the fact that those of your persuasion who ran for office were ALL soundly defeated in the last election? I'm pretty happy with that one. And guess what? They will be defeated again should they run. Wanna know why? Because people here are not nearly as "dumb" as you think they are.
Finally, that was a really stupid statement about my being loved and admired. Are you insane? Yes, I am loved although that's none of your darned business, is it? I'm continually in awe of you guys' intelligence, but I never realized you could read my family and friends' minds.

The bickering is at the very heart of this blog. If people cannot offer an opposing view to all the arrogance displayed here, then why have the blog to begin with. Those being crucified on here are not reading it anyway.

How do I know? Because I have talked to several of them. I didn't say that NONE of them read it. But I know they do not get down to the level of those who crucify them. Oooops, now someone will accuse me of making a mockery of the Christ's suffering on the cross.

You ask, "Please cite one example of where I even hinted that people should have no right to question government?" How about practically every post you have made in the last twenty four months? You have made it abundantly clear that you believe no one has the right or responsibility to question government officials or to refer to their behavior in simple terms. I ask you, what do you call a person caught in a number of outright lies with absolute proof of such lies? As a simple person with a simple vocabulary for me they simply are a liar.
You deny there is any corruption, in any official in Giles County
citing "take the proof to those in authority and then shut up", "let the legal system take care of the problem". Sensible people are very aware that not all corruption is illegal and not all illegal activity is punishable by statute.
Corruption is an impairment of integrity, virtue, or moral principle; a departure from what is pure or correct. While it may include such things as bribery, thief etc it is not limited to those things as you seem to think. What do you call a person who has proven to have betrayed their integrity and moral principles?
For me again being a simple person they are simply untrustworthy.

wab..
I just agreed with you on a preceeding thread, but I must bitterly take issue with you on this one!
I have never even hinted that nobody has a RIGHT to question their government. I do it all the time, particularly with this present obama administration. So what you just accused me of is a complete falsehood. Complete!
Furthermore, I have never denied that there are problems in Giles County government. Please cite one example of where I stated that nobody in county government is corrupt! You won't find one, so again, that's another falsehood.
Yes, we do have the legal system to handle those who break the law. And, just as the old saying goes...."throw the bums out", we have the electoral process and even impeachment to take care of those who are not fulfilling their responsibilities in elected office. And I am not naive and lacking in knowledge because I simply choose to follow the letter of the law and the institutions in place. If they are useless, then the government could reduce expenses drastically by doing away with both the legal system and the electoral process.
I call a thief a thief; it's just that simple. But it's not my job to run around town telling everybody he is a thief. Nor is it yours. Several months ago, I gave you the example of a man whom you know for a fact is cheating on his wife. Does that give you the right or the responsibility to go tell his wife or, even worse, to broadcast it to the whole community? I don't think it does. Isn't that what the scriptures allude to when there's mention of "feet that are swift to mischief"?

If you are keeping score...and surely you're not that stupid, wab has never gotten me. Thanks for your "unbiased" opinion, but I disagree. I voluntarily agreed with him on another thread and you see it as "gotcha". You know, that doesn't look very bright of you.

61900 Deception normally relies on a logical statement followed by an irrational conclusion, that if believed is to your victim's detriment.

I don't get involved in the personal lives of others & don't gossip. There has been some of that on the blog & to me, the black eye belongs to the writer whether it's fact or not. Your hate WAB campaign falls in that category.

99% of the time, what WAB writes is about political acts that corrupt our government, and that affects every citizen, especially anyone who pays taxes, sends their chidren to public school, and relies on the many necessary services our government provides. The same 99% of the time you are defending the wrongful actors and attacking aout the only person who tries to make sure government serves the people. WAB's rights & acts are Constitutional. Your right to speak is undeniable, but your intent and perhaps real life acts are undoubtedly criminal. It's a subject you really should discuss with the Memphis Ford family, the Blantons, & others who were eminently more powerful than the pollywogs in Giles County - some of them might clue you into the reality of cuff & cell vs. the everyone does it metntality (until the hammer falls).

No I'm not talking about incidental errors we all make.

There you go again. I'm no criminal and neither are my acts as you call them.
You're still not looking very bright, you know.

Sheesh. Name calling, back-biting. That is why things can't get done around here - people are too focused on their defensive or aggressive postures. In true progress there is give and take - rare are the two people who agree on everything, but again - in progress, each side gives a little to get the group to take a step forward. I can't imagine that ever happening here if the posters on this blog are any indication. So sad. Smart minds, spinning their ever-loving wheels, trying to win a battle of wits. Somehow that's NOT the battle we should be engaged in. The real battle should be identifying new candidates - electable ones - to run against current elected officials on the School Board or on the commission who don't have enough sense to understand the issues before them and deal on the best interests of the county! It's amazing the number of people I meet who have no idea who their commissioner or school board rep is...some don't even know the district their in. That's scary. How can you make change when you can't engage those who could benefit from it? Status quo is death...if you're not growing, you're dying.

I really liked and agreed with your post until you had to make reference to elected officials who don't have sense enough to understand issues and to act in the best interestes of the county. Can you not see just a tiny bit of arrogance in that? And just because a citizen doesn't know his/her commissioner is not the fault of the commissioner. There are complacent people everywhere (not just Giles County) who could care less who governs them.
You mention that status quo is death. Not necessarily. Sometimes one can go from the frying pan into the fire. By that, I mean we can always get something worse. Just consider who we now have for president. But I would agree with you that without growth there is death.
