The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. Is There A Pattern Forming?

Is there a pattern forming to deal with unacceptable results?
We saw it when the people made a clear statement that they did not want county wide zoning. We saw it with the Financial Management Act when the people voted overwhelmingly in favor of adoption. We saw it again when the people voted not to raise the sales tax to build Sam Davis Stadium. It seems if you are in charge and don't like the results of a vote you just cause it to be redone until its more to your liking.

What happened yesterday takes this process another step closer to a total detach from the people and even in this case from the County Commission. After the County Commission voted not to change the distance between churches/schools and places that serve alcoholic beverages the County Executive has taken it upon herself to nullify that vote and order the County Clerk to issue beer licenses to anyone applying for one with a distance greater than 400 feet between the seller and a school/church.
The County Executive gave a statement to WKSR, now posted on their website, in it she stated " she made a mistake in the meeting. “I used “Roberts Rules Of Order” to make the decision on the two-thirds vote, but after meeting with Doug Bodary with CTAS, it was learned that “Tennessee Codes Annotated” overrides my decision.” “I am very sorry for this confusion, In the future, I will make sure I study the Tennessee Codes and not rely entirely on “Roberts Rule Of Order.”

Several things need to be questioned about this decision.
1st after a vote is taken and the results recorded and announced and the meeting is adjourned in order to change that vote another vote must be taken.
2nd There is nothing in the CTAS manual that prohibits a 2/3 majority being required only identifies areas in which a 2/3 majority is required.
3rd The Tennessee Code Annotated states that in order to change a resolution already passed a 2/3 majority is required.
4th The history of CTAS reveals it to be nothing less than an instrument of whoever pays it's dues.
5th Making this arbitrary change without consulting with the County Commission places the County Executive in a position of power never envisioned by our rule of law.
6th Releasing this statement and making this change then not showing up for work so that questions might be asked of her is not only a cowardly political trick it is a slap in the face of every church/school in this county.
7th This appears to be nothing less than a political move to gain votes in the Campbellsville area by subverting the rules in order to allow the Campbellsville Store to sell alcoholic beverage for on and off premises consumption.
8th If after eight years serving as County Executive and still not knowing the rules required to govern can anyone make a legitimate claim of competency on the part of the County Executive?

You hit the nail on the head with number 4. The same thing can be said about MTAS. All they do is rubber stamp what comes out of certain city officials mouth or agree with whatever their opinion happens to be.

Bless her heart!

That said, it is time that we elect a person (to be county executive) who is willing to read, study and learn before they act and or speek. The current County Executive is very comfortable when others stand before her and protect her from the public view. She reacts to those commissioners who really run the county.

I understand that she is running for a third term; what are her plans to move Giles County into the future? same as before, no change?

Boy do we need leadership that is willing to lead rather than react.

If Vanzant was so right in her action to void the commissioners vote and impose her own will so that alcoholic could be sold just 400 feet from a church why has she now included it as part of a very expensive special called meeting for Feb 8th as announced on WKSR?
Fact, once again she got caught serving special interest, in this case Campbellsville Store, to the exclusion of everyone else.
Fact, she voided the commissioners vote and replaced it with her one single vote to allow beer sales next to a church.
You'd think a good Church of Christ member would be opposed to increasing the availability of alcohol especially next to a church , but since it's not her church guess it don't count.

I find it rather odd that when the County Executive makes a statement about not knowing the rules she is responsible for following that anyone would get bent out of shape over 2 Feb. 2:38AM pointing it out then being referred to as "sarcastic" because they agreed with the county executive. Eight years of on the job training should prepare anyone for the most basic activity of their job. 2:38 didn't point out anything new they only put into words what many have questioned for a number of years now.
It is rather ironic to see 5:19 criticize someone other than me, about the use of sarcasm then turn on the sarcasm faucet full flow.
But then what more should be expected from someone who claims to know more about my job, my psyche, my life and my motives than I do. Oh well, I guess I should count it a plus having someone look after me so lovingly. Allen Barrett

Oh, and one more thing. You want to blame your not going to church on hypocrites? Well, I'd rather be in church with them than in hell. And churches are full of hypocrites from preachers right on down the line. They will have to give and account of thier actions and so will you. And many times even those in leadership positions within the church can be your greatest stumbling block. Think about that.

Excuse me 3:42 but when I read this statement from your 6:09 entry "And churches are full of hypocrites from preachers right on down the line" I must have misunderstood because since the preacher is at the top in most churches and you started with him and went right down the line I thought that would include everyone.
So would you please clarify what those words mean if not that everyone in the church was a hypocrite.
Oh, while you are at it would you please answer the question I actually asked, "how does your terminology identifying church leaders differ from what you claim WAB does with politicians?"
That's the question I am really interested in hearing about.

Wednesday, February 03, 2010 7:19:00 PM

7:19
Ok, I'll split hair with you over terminology. Are you that dense? What I meant is simply that churches are INFESTED with (full of or filled with) hypocrites from the preacher right on down the line. And that doesn't mean that every single person in a church is a hypocrite. Would you have understood me had I used that word (infested) instead of full?
Oh, and by the way, elders occupy the top position in the local church and not a preacher. Of course some egotistical preachers exalt themselves to planes of superiority and ignore God's plan. Still, the elders are scripturally in the leadership role.
Now, as for your burning question, I will attempt to answer it. Ironically, a similar principle might be applied in both situations. Churches are INFESTED with or full of (filled with) hypocrites. Do we agree on that much? There are also some hypocritical people serving in government throughout this great nation. I would even concede that there may be a few in Giles County government somewhere, but I don't know any of them. That being the case, I would strongly disagree should you say our local government is "infested" with or filled or full of dishonest and/or incompetent people. Nevertheless, barrett and company have persecuted and attacked certain individuals they apparently see as somehow unfit. And that's their right to favor and disapprove of whomever they please. But everyone doesn't share their views, and that doesn't make those people wrong, ignorant, or enablers of corruption.
Perhaps a subtle similarity between the two lies with the fact that hypocrites in church and disliked politicians will all have to give account. The former will have to answer to God, and the politicians will be accountable to the voters on election day and not wab and his cohorts.
Let me share this thought before it eludes me. It is NOT up to me to identify hypocrites in church. But you and I both know there are plenty of them in every church, don't we? As for politicians, it is up to me to support those officials and candidates of my choosing and vote for them. That doesn't mean I run around town beating up on those I have no intention of supporting. I just vote against them.
I hope this has helped clear up your continued misunderstandings. If it hasn't, I'll be glad to split hair with you again.

One of the simplest things about politics is that people chose one person or another to support based on their like-mindedness. A campaign is then mounted to get the one, a person supports, elected. Within that campaign you show the weakness of the opponent via their voting record, ideology, public statements, character, etc so that an informed vote can be cast.
Sometimes people in an effort to prevent full disclosure make claims of dirty politics being practiced and try to cover up their political weaknesses. The presidential campaign of John Edwards is an example of such covering up of a persons true character. Attacking a candidate's family, because you can't legitimately attack the candidate is despicable, however anything backed up by factual evidence that reveals the record or character of the candidate should be open for public discourse. Voting for or against someone simply to cancel another person's vote is every bit as stupid and wasteful as not voting at all. For me it's an act of respect to cast an informed vote and an act of disrespect to cast an uninformed vote. That respect isn't just for or against a great nation but for or against it's great people and their sacrifice in making it great.
My children and grandchildren went into the voting booth with me from early childhood and were taught the history of this nation and what it took to give them the opportunity to cast a vote. They were taught that if one citizen is prohibited from casting a vote it is a vile mark against the whole process and that casting a vote without being as fully informed as possible is just as vile. And you, sir, are guilty of judging me. Elders were ordained (sanctioned) by God in every church to feed the flock. I understand the qualifications of elders and deacons (aka pastors and bishops), so I really don't need a Bible lesson, ok? The point I was trying to make, if you are looking at some heirarchy within the church, is that those servants would be at the top and not some preacher. God knew what He was doing when this was set up. And even from a secular view, who do you think hires or discharges preachers?
How dare you to judge me just because we disagree! I think you may be the one who needs a huge slice of humble pie.

I have dealt with many county executives in my career and Janet has been supportive to our community. Jnaet has been very supportive to the Elderly, disabled, and our community needs. It is apparent that a single honest mistake is judged by the community as serious as the Death Penalty. People should be more interested in our community. We ignore how our schools and how they manages crisis and termoil in our schools how our state system delivers service for the children and our court system handles juvenille issues and treatment options. We are so ready to point a finger a one person. What about taking an interest and working towards a better community.

Volunteerism in this county is almost non-existant. I don't go to church but maybe we should take a some knowledge from the Methodist churh and their support to Matthews. Volunteering to take care of our needy. Poor people in this county are discriminated against and Janet has been a driving force to help us in correcting issues with helping the people. Mrs. Vanzant has my vote, along with those of my extended family. And, because of what some of you guys are trying to pull off, be assured that I will be out campaigning for her. Keep it up. All your spewings are doing nothing but winning votes for her. Brilliant maneuver. Have you ever stopped to consider when it was that you started to be so angry and resentful toward Mrs. Vanzant?
By the way, wab's name came up during a large gathering not too long ago. Guesss what? You should have heard the crowd laughing. Does that tell you anything whatsoever?

Oh a gathering of Commissioners.

What WAB is saying hasn't convince me not to vote for Vanzant, you have with you smart no it all attitude.

7:20 pm, I included preachers and it certainly included you.

No, it was not a gathering of commissioners. Infact, it was a much much larger group, and the laughter was loud.
The know-it-all attitude belongs to someone besides me, and I think we both know who that is. I simply point out how wrong it is to do the things they do.

It's "dey" who think they have all the answers and nobody is asking the questions.

Which tells me nothing. How about an answer I can understand.

Ok. I'll take the bait. We both know that "dey" are the VVM (very vocal minority) who have been whining for the past few years. And they aren't going away. I wish to the Lord they would, but they are on a self-appointed mission to rid Giles County of corruption and run things the way they see fit. I'm just thankful that not too many people take them seriously.

Interesting. I have to differ with you about a minority of people in this area being unhappy with the local government. Obviously there must be many people. Didnt the city and county governments unite and finally put an end to the situation of the city mayor and economic positions being in conflict and bring about the change that so many citizens had complained about for several years. The two governments were forced to improve the situation and I doubt that would have come about if the complaints had only come from a minority. Then the public hearings about PES. Over 100 people attended those sessions. Changes for the better are still being made at PES and hopefully in both our city and county governments.

8:22 Amen. Cant see much changes in the city or county governt unless a crowd of disgruntled citizens protest. Cant be left to just a handful to get the changes we all want but the rest of us sit at home letting them try for the changes we want and I am just as guilty about that as anyone. Maybe we need a few tea parties here.

Still don't know if Barrett has a group or what but I do know he's done more to make positive changes in this place than anyone else. Seems like he's everywhere sometimes and bringing out things everyone else is afraid to even speak of. He's an inspiration to me and because of him I have become more involved and pay closer attention.

I first heard of Mr. Barrett when he got arrested at the School Board. I thought anyone willing to tackle that bunch of Jackals couldn't be all bad.
Since that time I have been a lot like Howard impressed with the fact he seems to be everywhere and doing everything. I have been in groups where his name has been mentioned and heard the curses from some rather important people in town. I have also been in groups where he has received nothing but praise from some of the same people. I guess it depends on whose Ox is being gored. The point is before Mr. Barrett got involved citizens were just not allowed to take part in the government unless they were the right kind of people.
Whether you agree or disagree with him, like him or dislike him you have to accept that he has made many changes for the better and has shown far more courage than I ever thought anyone in this town would.
I have met him two or three times at different places and each time found him to be very engaging, thoughtful and considerate. He is obviously passionate in his beliefs and well informed when he speaks, to some these are negatives but when compared to the mealy mouth circle talkers that have dominated this county since I was a child they are characteristics that are greatly appreciated and very welcomed by me and many others.
Thank you Mr. Barrett, thank you very much.

You are feeding his ego. And that is hardly productive to a better Giles County. It only encourages misbehavior and mischief. That's an opinion.

To 4:00 My ego is fine. I appreciate what Howard and Wally had to say and it is indeed encouraging but my actions are not dictated by either their support or your objections, it's just a matter of trying to do what's right, but you wouldn't know anything about that would you?
If you would get out and get involved you might take the same initiatives and become a productive citizen instead of sitting back whining about how terrible I am. Allen Barrett

Oh, but I beg to differ with you. Certainly, I know what's right and honorable, and so SHOULD you. And believe me, I am an active and involved citizen. It's just that I don't go along with what you guys are doing, so you feel that gives you license to speak badly of me. In my opinion, that's very unbecoming of a man who claims to be in the soul-winning business. Would you agree?

Why do you keep referring to Mr. Barrett's religion and profession. Why can't you challenge him on his ideas... is it because you have none?
Thus far you certainly have not shown any. Oh by the way knowing what is honorable and doing same are two different worlds. As the Bible says to know better and not do better is a far greater sin than simply not knowing. Shame on you.

Shame on me? Are you kidding? I'm not the one who claims one thing and does the opposite. With me, what you see is what you get. So shame on you for not being able to see what so clearly is in front of your eyes.

To 9:03 You are without question the most hypocritical person ever to write on this blog. You try to justify your contridictions by denying them when other can clearly see them. Your explainations are totally un-connected to questions asked about your contridictions.
If you are what you show to people you are indeed a very stupid and conniving person of dubious character.

Of course I seem stupid, hypocritical, conniving, and of dubious character to people like you. Why? Because I don't agree with you. And I don't see a hypocrite when I look into my mirror? Do you?
