A Prom Where and How Much?????

Why is GCHS holding it's prom in Nashville instead of here? A prom is a very expensive thing to parents especially in this economy, "the dresses, the tux, the hair, the accessories etc", so adding $65.00 to the cost for transportation and set up at a hotel in Nashville seems unreasonable. It was mentioned that some people thought this was an easy way to keep the "undesirables" away but I fear if true it may be keeping many others from enjoying one of the most important events in their young lives.

Both of my boys graduated from Richland and they've been holding their proms like this for years--walkout at the gym and then on to Nashville. They all had a wonderful time. I didn't have a worry about them because Mrs. White and Mr. Hollis ran a tight ship. They knew if they acted wrong, Momma and Daddy would be making the trip to Nashville to pick them up. In my opinion, it was worth what I paid for them and their dates to attend and I don't recall anyone ever having to be sent home early.

I've always felt sorry for the GCHS students only getting to walk out and then roam the rest of the night after their parents spent so much money. Now they'll get the opportunity to really enjoy this special event.

6:28 Thats great your boys had a wonderful time. Mr. Barrett's point is many parents cannot afford a further $65 for a prom in Nashville so many youngsters miss out in this once in a lifetime event. Here's an idea - why don't all you well-heeled parents create an anonymous fund so all the kids can attend?

Good Grief!!!! Why in the world do you have to come up with such a thread Mr. Barrett? How hard is it to save up $65 knowing this event is upcoming? My son is going to RHS prom with his girlfriend, and it is such a relief to know they will be in good hands. I think it is a nice change for GCHS.

It is a nice tradition and attendance is quite large so it seems few are missing out. Must we complain about everything?

I hope they all get to go and have a great time.
I do understand how hard it can be to come up with 65 dollars these hard time, when you have to also have clothes you may never wear again.
Gets expensive but everyone wants their child to have the memories.

Do they still walk out in the school gym before going? I know parents like to see this.

A place in Mt. Pleasant just laid off 25 people last week. Gas going up makes everything else go up.

Oh, for crying out loud!!! The bigger waste of $$$ has always been the expense of decking out the gym elaborately for an hour-long walkout, only to have the kids leave immediately thereafter.
And, it's not the "well-heeled" parents' responsibility to foot the bill for everyone else's children.
RHS has been celebrating their prom in Nashville as long as anyone can remember and with no problems. I believe this is a positive change for GCHS!

1:17 How hard is it to save up $65.00?
For over two months now we been on unemployment and food stamps. This is the first time since I was 17 that I didn't have a job this long.
I no longer have cable, internet or a cell phone. I'm using the computer at the library to write this and some more letters seeking a job. My truck is paid for but not in great shape. Utilities continue to go up with new increase this month in electric, gas has doubled in less than a year, food is costing more and we haven't bought any new clothes since Christmas. I've sold most everything I could and it seems like things just keep getting worse. Almost every week there is a new expense at school.
How hard is it to save up $65 dollars impossible at this time and if I could get 65 dollars that would only be a drop in the bucket as to what it cost for a prom and besides that there are too many other things the money is needed for. I don't mind things the way they are so much but it sure stings when somebody tells you how easy it is to get 65 dollars.

If I was without a job I would be at Pizza Hut, Dollar General, or Walmart tomorrow. The jobs are there. Might you have to work 2 or even 3 to make ends meet to you get the one you want? sure but that's what you do for your family. I have done so three times in my 43 years but I always made sure my kids had these moments to cherish.

1:17 I'm curious all this happened to you in two months of being without a job? That's a bit quick to lose everything isn't it? I been there though and feel for you.

12:28 Would you please tell me where 1:17 said they were without a job.
I'm 1:17 and retired.
I scraped the money up to buy prom gown, shoes, and hair fixed so she could have that memory years ago.

Some other parents did the same thing only to have their children leave after the walk out and not dance afterward.

I think most of this is being said because WAB put it on the blog.

I still hope all the students that want to go get to go and have a good time. There are some people that have jobs don't have the money to waste. Too many mouths to feed, buy clothes and pay doctor bills for.

Maybe your post was meant for someone else beside 1:17, if so look before you post next time.

A friend told me where she worked in Mt. Pleasant laid off 25 people a week ago today which was a surprise because they had been working overtime. She wasn't in the unlucky ones that day, but wondering if she will be next.

When our child was at GCHS they didn't allow proms. It was SubDeb dances all those dresses were for. I just remembered the expense because I wanted my child to have the memories.

Your child can live a normal and productive life even if they do not attend a "prom" this spring. What is so great about that? Probably all of you who are complaining about the $65 are sitting there counting your food stamps while your welfare check comes in the mail as you puff away on those "free" cigaretts and talking on your cell phone as you browse on your computer in the condo. Don't complain with your mouth full.

3:04 Do you mean they can buy cigaretts with food stamps? I thought they couldn't... that makes me mad if they can.

My feelings for the student that might not get to go to the prom was the on with Mother and Father working at low paying jobs. There is people out like that. Everybody isn't on welfare.
I know of one family with three children that gets food stamps and that is all, grandparents are furnishing them a place to live and giving a little money along.

How smart is Mary?

Food Stamps: You can't buy deli items.

Food stamps can be used to buy any food or food product for human consumption, and seeds and plants to produce food.

Food stamps cannot be used to purchase:

* Alcoholic beverages and tobacco
* Lunch counter items or foods to be eaten in the store
* Vitamins or medicines
* Pet foods
* Any non-food items (such as soaps, paper products, laundry products, grooming items, and
cosmetics)
* Hot foods that are ready to eat
* Any food marketed to be heated in the store

Its a little of subject but o well. 722 you are right. Food stamps are used to buy food products, let me tell you about a recent incident that i witnessed. I was in line to check out when a young man in front of me used food stamps to pay for a 2 liter coke and a pizza, he also had some dog food so he asked to cashier to ring it up separately. The young man pulled a several $100's and $20's out of his pocket to pay for his dog food. He had several hundred dollars in cash but he could not buy is own pizza?? Things like that piss hard working/tax paying citizens off!! Since I only had 1 item I was right behind the young man as we walked out the door, he got into his SUV with a expensive sound system. He could afford an SUV, sound system, dog food, and walk around with money in his pocket but WE are buying his Pizza and 2 liter!!!! I will step off of my soap box now.....

Mary was not saying they bought "cigarettes", just that they are probably smoking them. AND... The food stamp folks have a "way" of getting around not being able to buy cigaretts and alcohol with the stamps. They simply buy legal products with stamps and then return them as "spoiled" or something wrong with them and get a money refund. Then they have cash money for cigs and alcohol. I have seen it done many times. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY IN GILES COUNTY.

The food stamp game is one of the games. It not only happens in Giles County, but it happens everywhere.

Another game, on a different note, is when one buys food (usually buffets) and the restaurant clerk rings up "no sale" and puts the cash in the drawer.

I too am sick of hearing about the new community service office. It appears John Dickey holds Glossup up to the same level as a person who discovered the cure for cancer. At first I disregarded all the slanderous tails that were circulating about McAlister, Barrett and Glossup. But now, maybe there is more to the story because of the manner in which they have shoved this new promotion of Glossup's down our throat.

My son and his girlfriend attended the Richland High prom. They had a wonderful time and they should have.
Between both families, we spent a combined 750 dollars for a one night formal party, which included; dress apparel, flowers, transportation, prom tickets, after evening meal in Columbia, and photographs.
Could the money have been spent better? Absolutely! And why wasn't it? Because my wife and kids are caught up in the "everybody else is doing it" syndrome; regardless of the fact that it is a real rip off.

why does Dickey feel the need to keep reminding everyone that he thinks Glossup does no wrong, in his eyes, Glossup is better at dealing with the public than he is. My main concern is if Glossup is in charge of seeing that all non-criminal complaints are handled and the regular police take care of the criminal offenses, then why do the tax payers of Pulaski need to pay the chief of police $65,000.00 a year to do nothing. It seems to me that Dickey has got Glossup doing all his dirty work, leaving Dickey nothing to do but buy tractors and sell guns while on duty. I hear that is all he does. I think the tax payers of Pulaski need to stand up and put Glossup in the chief of police's position since he is already doing his job anyway.

Seems strange that Dickey cant say enough good stuff about glossup but he wont say anything about the horrible crimes that occur everyday and go unsolved. if citizens knew what kind of scarry stuff happened on a day to day basis, they would be wanting answers along with booting Dickey out of office. Those aspiring to elected office are those who, when defeated, love to call names and cry foul. Rather than accept the fact that the voters did not want them, they seek to discredit and belittle those who won or accuse election officials of such things as incompetence and bias.
