Request to Exempt Citizens From State Inspections
During the January Legislative Meeting the Commissioners, based on some very, very faulty and misleading information presented by the County Executive and a couple of her most trusted cohorts, voted to give full authority to the state to inspect all new construction for its energy efficiency. It was clearly stated by the state that this was only the first part of implementing a full inspection fee program that would eventually add several thousand dollars to all new construction including small home improvements and additions.
After much investigating by some responsible commissioners and the assurance, from those who approve the grants, that the program would have no effect on grants or loans from the state the matter was to be re-voted on. Because of degeneration of the spine and the lack of active brain cells in some commissioners, who simply stated that the facts of the matter did not matter, they voted to take more personal freedom from the individual citizens and put it in the hands of bureaucrats in Nashville.
Commissioner Campbell justified his support for this intrusive action by saying, "this isn't zoning. Take government money you play by their rules". While this isn't zoning it's certainly a big step toward it. Twenty two other counties have opted out of this program because of its expensive intrusion into citizen's lives and there is no connection between this program and receiving state grants.
Commissioner Reedy offered this observation, "the inspection program is needed to get us to a more energy efficient level with government. The $5,000.00 initial cost will be recovered in energy savings in five years". While this may sound good where are the unbiased statistics to support such a claim. I know that in my own house to save $5,000.00 on energy in five years would require cutting my energy use by more than half. Here's the thing every time, every single time people have cut back their energy use the rates have increased so that the same level of income will be maintained at the utility providers, so how do you realistically save anything?
I do commend Commissioner Coleman for having the will to change her vote after becoming aware of the State's true position.

one of the reasons i chose to move to Giles County was because land was cheap and there were so few regulations on how I built my house. Why are the commissioners so hell-bent on ensuring this county remains a sleepy, retirement community, devoid of development and immune to innovation?
Why are we the voters not allowed to come to the meetings when these things are decided? Because they are held during the day when most of us have to work.I was looking at building a house, but now I would rather not. I am tired of everything I own being taxed, retaxed and overtaxed.

Tommy Campbell is as useless as teets on a boar hog. There must really be some stupid people in district 7 to repeatedly keep re-electing him. Wow! If people had any idea how behind the times he is and how he is holding our county back they would be dumbfounded. Also, what is that thing growing under his bottom lip. Does he think he's cute? GAG!!
I think the people of District knew who they didn't want representing them. That's really what this is all about, isn't it?

Upon hearing this, I have to ask myself; are the commissioners really that out of touch with the folks who elected them?
Are they really so much better off financially, that what the majority of citizens see as an added unnecessary cost for building or remodeling, just doesn't seem to be a significant burden for themselves, and therefore it shouldn't be for the average citizens either?
It seems that as always, our elected officials are so caught up in the process of governing, that they never really consider the impact of their collective decisions on the electorate.
Which is why are federal and State and local governing bodies are considered with such distrust these days.
And they wonder why the electorate is so upset most of the time.

That's why he is continually atttacking Tommy Campbell and Terry Harwell. It's interesting that he is not so eager to attack Mrs. Coleman. Were I him, I would be careful about that as well.

It seems Barrett complimented Coleman in the opening remarks and nothing was said about Harwell. I was at the meeting and Barrett was more kind to Campbell in his report than he should have been.

I just talked with some who knew Tommy Campbell and they didn't like him either. Nor do they like Barrett.

Allen Barrett deals in FACTS. Good or bad. Like it or not. Just FACTS and we should thank and respect him for it.
I haven't known Mr Barrett very long
and didn't like him the first time I met him. He seemed arrogant, defensive and a smart alack, sort of like the first time I listened to Rush, but when I took the time to really listen to him I saw that I not only agreed with him on most issues he has an insight and way of speaking that challenges you to think even when you don't want to.
What I thought was arrogance is actually confidence, I 've never known anyone he has tried to make see things his way and he has challenged others many times to show where he is wrong and when that was done it was accepted.
I think it's his bluntness and sense of humor that is the reason some have trouble with him. The biggest thing is he seldom says anything that he can;t defend and that really irritates some people who are unable to counter with reason and facts. I like Barrett and respect him even more and believe if others would listen without preconceptions and prejudice they too would come to respect and appreciate the man and what he has done for people of this county. He should be citizen of the week in the paper actually citizen of the year would be more appropriate.

there must of been a reason. She didn't want it or misplaced the papers or etc. For you to have said why she didn't turn the papers in would of been a good place to start. It certainly wasn't obvious why she didn't unless you mean she didn't want it in Giles county, but it is coming isn't it?

Actually, I was describing the man you admire. Now that is something quite obvious to us both.
Vanzant was a asked several times about why she didn.t get the paperwork in on time finally at a campaign stop at the Recreation center she said, "we don't need a bunch of outsiders coming in here and making all the money". I was there along with several dozen other people who let out a collective gasp.
One of your problems is that you start defending people before you know what you.re talking about then you get in a corner and start saying why don;t yuou ask that person. If you going to defend or criticize someone you should get all your facts together and get them right are else you end up looking like you do.
Now will someone please tell me is it the same Pilot that is building, that Janet didn't want to come to Giles County?
