From the Insurance Committee Held This Morning

During this mornings Insurance Committee Meeting it was discussed and agreed that finally county employees would be required to pay a portion of their health insurance premiums.
The premiums are scheduled to go up 7.1% this year and the county just don't have the money to continue paying all the cost. This means that the approximate increase of $42.00 will be paid by the employee if this is passed in the Budget Committee and the full Commission.
The resolution that was passed this morning states that the county will pay the first $590.00 of an individual employee's health insurance premium and the employee will be obligated for the rest of the cost.

It's $590.00 a month for each employee. Schools are not involved as they have separate insurance.

5:52 The county must be really paying good then.
I never heard of it costing 590 before.

I think you can see why people are asking about the insurance.

Most insurance plans are very expensive these days. Especially if you have a family and do not work for an employer that has a very large number of employees. Most places are going to high deductible health plans and offering HSAs ( Health Savings Accounts) because premiums are much less expensive. Do the county employees have this option?

The county is on state policy. The school system is also and that is a big savings for them since the state pays a portion of the teacher's insurance policy. There is no local agent.

7:06 Are you saying every county in Tennessee is paying $590 a month for their employees insurance?

I don't know what every county pays. I am not sure if it is based on the amount of employees in that county or what. I do know that our school system and our county do not pay the same because one is on education policy and the other county. They are both state policies which the state bids out. The school system does not cost as much as the county plus the state pays a large percentage of a teacher's insurance. I don't know if every county uses the state policy or not. The state does bids on the policy to get the best price. If the school system gets off the state policy the state pays none of a teacher's policy so it would cost a ton of money for them to get off of that policy. The county could possibly find a better price but it is almost impossible to get back on it.
