Are African Americans Brainwashed Into Voting For Democrats?

Presidential candidate Herman Cain made the statement that “Many African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view,"

Mr. Cain has received much criticism for this statement but so far no one as provided any evidence that it isn’t true. In this thread I hope to provide evidence that Mr. Cain was correct by offering a small history lesson and opportunity for adult discussion.

For example did you know that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a republican? Did you know that it was Republicans who pushed through the civil-rights legislation in the 1960’s and that it’s still Republicans who actually seek to empower blacks and others to get them out of poverty?

Are you aware of the term and the origin of, “yellow dog democrat”? It was first used in 1928 by Senator Tom Heflin of Alabama at the democrat convention in response to Al Smith condemnation of the KKK which largely controlled that convention. Sen. Heflin coined the term and it became a common statement of democrats who said I’d rather vote for a yellow dog than a republican because the republican party is full of blacks”.

Francis Rice is an attorney and retired army Lt. Col. She wrote this, “ the liberal party pushes programs that keep my fellow blacks dependent on government handouts and temporary fixes, and encourages them to see themselves as victims.”

From it’s founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party it has been Republicans who have stood at the forefront of the civil rights movement. It was Republicans who fought against slavery, amended the Constitution to include all people in its freedoms of citizenship.

Why is it that most people seem to have forgotten that it was a democrat, George Wallace who stood in the door of an Alabama school house in 1963 and declared “segregation now and forever”? It was a democrat Eugene “Bull” Connor the public safety director who ordered the dogs be turned loose and the fire hoses turned on peaceful demonstrators in Birmingham. It was the democrat Governor Faubus of Ark. that tried to stop the integration of schools in Little Rock and a republican president who sent troops there to enforce those rights.

Why is it that most have forgotten or was never taught the truth about democrats who re-started the KKK to keep blacks and white republicans away from the polls and under control?

Dr. King spoke eloquently of judging people on their character instead of the color of their skin,

It was Republicans who started the NAACP in an effort to stop the lynching by democrats. It was democrats who, when they took control of congress in 1892 that overturned practically every civil rights law that had been passed by the republicans.

Many may recall the civil rights struggles of the 1960’s and credit President Johnson with their passage but in reality it was the leadership of Senator Everett Dirksen that made passage possible. This was done in spite of the votes as such notable senators as Al Gore, Sr. Robert Byrd, Fritz Hollings. Even the young Senator from Mass. John F. Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil Rights Act. Kennedy also opposed the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King. Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy in her taped memoirs referred to Dr. King as a tricky, terrible man.

Democrat President Lyndon Johnson explained to two governors his motivation for pushing the civil rights laws and great society, “I’ll have those n-gg—s voting Democrat for the next two hundred years.”

Democrat Senator Robert Byrd described by Sen. Ted Kennedy as the conscience of the Senate stated in 1944, after he had quit the KKK, “Rather I die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

It defies logic that so many people of color continue to vote for the very party that has sought to keep them from reaching their greater potentials. The problem, it seems is that many people are victims of a faulty education system and tend to cast their precious votes based on the sweet sound of words and empty promises instead of the realities of actions.

Was Mr. Cain correct in his statement, “Many African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," You decide, for me the evidence is an obvious yes.

The only thing holding anyone back in this country is themselves. Racism would go away if the monorities would just drop it. They are given more opportunity than any white male and they throw it away just so they can keep complaining. I guess they all thought that Obama was going to have checks delivered to them after he was elected. Now they are fighting amongst themselves with Maxine Waters no even knowing if the President is doing enough to help black people. He took a beating when he spoke in front of the black caucas. I think you have a good point with this topic. The problem is that the brainwashing will keep people of color from seeing it.

Herman Cain: I believe that I’m gonna get a third. Because a third of the black people in this country, at least, are thinking for themselves. Now the fact that they say that word is insensitive. That’s not as insensitive as the President of the United States standing in front of a major black audience, the Congressional Black Caucus, and scolding them because his policies have failed the country, his policies have failed black people. That’s more insensitive, that’s more insulting to me, rather than me using the term “brain-washed.”

An anonymous poster on 4 Oct. at 11:14 wrote, “This is about as racist as anything that's ever been put on here. The preacher is really showing his ignorance now, more than ever. Let's just have a race war.”

It’s not surprising that statement was posted anonymously and even less surprising that the person would fail to provide one single reason to support their absurd claim.
Racism is defined in the dictionary as “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.” With that definition in mind perhaps the anonymous writer would like to explain how I showed any racist attitude in anything that I wrote in this topic or anywhere else for that matter. Ignorance breeds stupid statements and the claim by this anonymous poster is utter stupidity without a single iota of factual support. The attitude that if there is any kind of discussion that involves people of color it will cause a race war is not only absurd it reflects a disrespectful racist attitude that people of color just can’t handle an intelligent discussion about politics, race or anything else. No one is responsible or irresponsible, intelligent or stupid, mature or immature, right or wrong, capable or incapable simply because of their race and to think they are is to fit the dictionary definition of racism.

Then comes the 5 Oct. 6:16 anonymous poster who stated, “Did you even consider what 11:14 said in the above post? I hope you can honestly say this thread was born more of stupidity than racism on your part”.
To answer those questions, yes I did consider what 11:14 said and I put my answer to their statement in this post. As for the second question the thread was posted not from “stupidity or racism” but from the simple desire to have an open discussion about a political situation that has an impact on the presidential elections. I hope to present more threads of this type in the future as it seems this is the only local forum where such discussion and news can be found. Just as I have brought important news to the public about local matters and given everyone the opportunity to have a say I plan to expand the blog to more “commentary” about things taking place outside the county.

Mr. Barrett you are historically accurate. However, even during the Civil Rights movement a shift was taking place and a division was taking place in the Democratic Party. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed the South's view of the Democratic Party especially since it was a southern Democrat, Lyndon Johnson, who signed into law. There is little doubt in my mind that with the southern shift from Democrat to Republican (although many still hold the Democratic line for the most part the South is solid red) that, like Strom Thrumond, many of the "Dixiecrats" who rejected the Civil Rights Act and supported Jim Crow would today be Republicans. Now, am I saying that all Republicans are racist? No. I do think that Mr. Barrett's historical evidence does lack this historical political shift. Also, I do not believe that his historical evidence, while somewhat accurate, does not bolster his and Mr. Cain's claim that African American's have been "brainwashed" into voting Democrat. African Americans do make up a large Democratic voting block, at least since the late 1960's, and people do vote their interests, but I do not think this is brainwashing. Middle aged, white, Christian, Southerners make up a voting block as well and do not think for a second that Republicans do not take advantage of it. Are they brainwashed? No, they vote together and they vote their interests.

To state a person is of different race due to color of skin, being black, white, yellow, red, or any other skin tone not mentioned here, is shameful...to state that black people a less intelligent, and can be "brainwashed" more so than other person of the human race...shameful. Well obviously ignorance is alive and thriving in some areas of the county as proven by 11:16 and 11:36.
"De-humanist attempt to slander the people of Giles County" did you actually read what I wrote or did you as usual just see my name and automatically go into your enabler attack persona? What slander? Have you been off your medications again? As for race, on almost any form from the doctor's office to the social security office you are asked what race you are and it's very doubtful anyone with the exception of you and a couple of other fools have put "human" in that space. Certainly we are of the human race but simple logic, which you seem to lack, makes it understood that if you are talking, walking upright, writing, and share other human characteristics you probably are a human. This usually is not an identifying characteristic required on most forms.
Except for you, "race" is understood as someone of a certain class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics. There is the human race but there are many sub-races within that category. The Germans are a race of people, Spaniards are a race of people while there are still other sub races within those groups.
I haven't seen anything where I referred to "black people as being less intelligent and able to be brainwashed. Anyone can be brainwashed it simply means "persuasion away from facts by propaganda or salesmanship". It takes place in thousands of classrooms everyday. You see the result of such "brainwashing" in the people marching around Wall Street attacking police and the very means by which they have become rich enough to not worry about being at work or school. You see it in people who watch a commercial on TV and are convinced if they don't run to WalMart and get it their life will be over.
Now before you jump to any false conclusions about this making me mad let me clarify. You have twisted and fabricated things that I wrote and things that were not written by me therefore you are a despicable liar and while liars are disgusting you are no more significant to my psychic being than a pesky mosquito on a summer evening.

To 11:36 While we are all the creation of God and He loves us all (Colossians 1:16 and John 3:16), certainly not all are His children.
To claim we are all God's children at best is to misunderstand and at worse to fully make the Bible a lie.
Unsaved people are never referred to as God's Children in the Bible.
Only those who are born again are children of God (John 1:12; 11:52; Romans 8:16; 1 John 3:1-10).

9:18 If you remember the story of the shepherd you should also remember that he went out looking for "his" sheep that had strayed from the flock. He was not looking for the sheep of another shepherd.

There is a world of difference in a saved person who strays off the path and a person who was not on the path to begin with. I would suggest you speak with someone with a more mature and extensive Christian understanding about this subject. There are many things that Christians believe differently and most make very little difference as to their salvation. Churches are made up of people who have chosen in like manner. Allowing instrumental music or not allowing it in church is a very important issue to many that doesn't make either side wrong only different. It's the same with whether you drink in moderation or not at all, whether you overeat or fast continually. There are things we do out of obedience but they are not saving factors. The reason I have responded to you on this subject is because it is the uttermost important matter of our lives. Jesus the Christ, Gods Son, sacrificed His perfect being for the sins of our chosen imperfections and offered that sacrifice to us that all who would surrender their will and choose Him
would be saved and have eternal life. There is no salvation outside of that choice. Obedience, works, attitudes, nothing can be substituted for the gift God gave.
We can develop different ideas about what obedience is, and that doesn't make either side wrong, but as for salvation their is nothing but right and wrong, no areas of grey shades only clear cut black and white.

If I have made enemies with this topic I'm sorry it was not my intent, but if I had to do it over I would do it the same way.

I am always amazed and suspicious when a person claims to speak for others especially when it's a white person declaring they speak for black people. I feel very strongly that is an attitude of patronizing that should be offensive to everyone in that group regardless of their color.
Your statement, "I was raised to think that you had to vote Democratic", proves the point Mr Cain tried to make. While he used people of color as an example many have been brainwashed on the subject of politics, religion, all manner of things. That, also is proven by your other statement, does not mean a person has to stay "brainwashed". Many come out of that situation and think for themselves unfortunately many others remain ignorant of any other possibilities.

Yes, it was a Republican president who freed the slaves. I too am proud of that. And I totally admired Dr. King; he too was a Republican. I also appreciate the fact that the party asks all men to get up on their own two feet and stop asking for handouts. That's called personal responsibility.
All blacks do not blindly follow the Democrats, but it appears that most of them do. And that troubles me, because the Democratic party keeps them in chains of bondage called entitlements. I long for the day when those like Mr. Cain, Allen Keyes, and others will finally get their people to see how they have been taken for granted by the Democrats.
Having said all that, I sadly can no longer call myself a Republican nor will I vote for another one other than whoever runs against Obama. He or she has my vote.
But because of people like Bill Haslam who is now trying to stick it to teachers and a few of the hate-filled people on this blog, I want nothing further to do with Republicans. And I used to work hard for them and attend rallys. No more.

whats even funnier is the term african-american. You are either an american or you are not. My ancestors are from europe, yet i see no reason to refer to myself as a european-american. When 95%+ black americans vote for obama, and you hear the interviewers ask so many "why?" and they cant even put a coherent sentence together.....well, its pretty easy to figure it out on your own.

The United States Census Bureau announced that Negro would be included on the 2010 United States Census, alongside "Black" and "African-American," because some older Black Americans nevertheless self-identify with the term.

You say the "The shepherd went looking for HIS own sheep who had gone astray. They were still his sheep even though they had wandered off. I would suggest that you do a little more research in the Bible and become knowledgeable about God's children. Have you ever heard of a wayward child? If my child got lost, he would still be my child for Pete's sakes". Don't you understand that you just agreed with what Mr. Barrett stated about belonging to Christ and not belonging to Him? I didn't want to get in this conversation but this is to important. It's you that needs to spend some time reading your Bible since it clearly talks about those who are children of Satan and those who are children of Christ. John 8:41 tells the facts.

God's children? Interesting what the republican frontrunner believes:

Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asked in an article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Its laughable the republicans may not be able to turn to religion to cover up their inability to lead when having to answer questions like this.

Mr. Barrett, I do not speak for other blacks. I have spoken to several of my black friends and they all agree that this subject is racist. Have you shown this to any of your black friends? What was their opinion. Just because someone was raised by parents who thought one way does not mean that they are being brain washed. I have a lot of ideas that my parents did not. I go to a different church than I was raised in but does that mean I got away from the brain washing of their church? Because you were taught an idea by your parents is not brain washing. If anyone is attempting to brain wash someone it is you. No matter what the subject you are right about everything, at least according to you. You ask people to prove it yet you never agree they are right. Just like the election, how far will you go before you agree you are wrong, probably never. It has been proven more than once that you are wrong but you will not accept it.

Yes, it is racist. The thrust of this thread was to imply (my opinion) that blacks are duped and not capable of seeing what democrats are doing to them. While I agree that the democrat party gives entitlements for votes, I do think this thread is designed to stir up more trouble. It's sad.

10:34.....you are the one that has been 'duped'. The democrats prey on the ignorance of all americans, but specifically minorities. They tell them that the old, rich white folks (specificaly men) are the enemy and that their party has the 'chosen saviours'....the ones that will 'get them what they deserve'. There are some blacks that are open minded enough to look at the facts and not blindly follow the dems. Sadly, they are few and far between.

You are so right about that. It appears that blacks are still in that entitlement way of thinking, and the democrats seize upon that big time. Were I a black man, it would embarrass me to think that my people don't think about what that party stands for. They WERE the party of the KKK and slavery. Who set them free; he was a Republican named Lincoln.
The real friend of the black man is the Republican party, but they just can't see it and would prefer to let people like Jessie Jackson tell them what to think. They could learn a lot if they would listen to Caine, Allen Keys, and other blacks who know how their people are being used for their votes.
Now, as for the rich man, please let me say thank God for them. I worked my way through college, thanks to a rich man giving me a job and an opportunity to feed my children and take care of my responsibilities while doing so. It weass a rich man who paid my salary for years after college. Many of those who resent and hate the wealthy never stop to think that it is they who ARE the jobs creators. Where would my family have been in life had I not had a job? Maybe I could have been living off the government and voting for democrats? Think.

Did you know that Lincoln hesitated about freeing the slaves? He actually wanted the blacks to go back to Africa or to Haiti. He thought that as long as the blacks were here that there would be problems. All of these things ya'll are quoting are right but there are just as many occasions through history where the republicans did bad things too. I have been reading a lot of history about Republicans since this subject was started and though the quotes are right there is plenty of arguments to the opposite also.

I wanted to say to you that I am a white man, and that I never meant to insult you. Perhaps I should have made a better choice in words. All I was trying to say is that, typically, blacks vote democratic in spite of the fact that they (the Democrats) seem to make a conscious effort to keep them in chains known as entitlements. That's NOT to say that ALL blacks do that, and I never meant to imply that they do. Frankly, I am quite embarrassed at what a lot of whites do as well.
Again, I apologize for offending you; that was not my intention. I just hate to see blacks in general duped for their votes.

The problem is that you can't hide what is true. The majority of black people would vote for Barack Obama if he ran as a republican, democrat or independant. There was a test done on the radio where they interviewed black people and asked if they liked Sarah Palin. Most didn't know who she was, but when they told them that she was running on the ticket with Obama, they said they love her, she will make a great vice president. What is also true is that most people in this country, white and black, don't know enough about politics and what is best for them to be allowed to vote. It is why we are in the mess we are today. Unions and entitlements being used as strong arms to keep people held back. This topic, rather locally or nationally, is going to have to be discussed because it is a major gliche in our system. If you are black and you are offended then get over it. Look around your neighborhood and see how many kids live with their father and mother. See how many black kids are going to jail before they get out of high school. Just go around and ask them what they aspire to be when they grow up. Once the attitude of minorities changes into an " I can be successful without the help of government programs" America will be better off. How many black parents sit around and complain about being held back because they are black while their kids listen. Kids will believe anything their parents tell them. It is the same way when some white redneck says the "n" word in fromt of their kid. Guess what they are going to go around calling black people? Herman Cain wouldn't be offended at this topic and look how successful he is. Oh yeah, he is also black. That should teach you something.

Something smells about the Williams/Henson county attorney business.
Questions were asked but no answers
have been given.
If Henson is the county attorney why is Williams involved and who is paying them?
If Williams is working for the county who authorized it?
Why did it cost the county so much if Barrett has to pay the court?
If Henson is paid 40 thousand a year to be county attorney who was the 34 thousand in the paper paid to?
There are a lot of things that ain't adding up.

Disagree with the comments against 1:33 PM's post. Citizens have the right to know. From what I understand Henson has a 'retainer' of $40,000 per year. Anything over and above, including lawsuits are paid extra. After the local trial regarding the 'mistake' made by the elections office when they qualified Coleman to run, Henson submitted an unitemized bill to the county that was in the $17,000 range, more than double Barrett's costs as the plaintiff. Garner paid the bill without question. Since nothing was ever explained the assumption was Williams was paid by the county as well as Henson. Williams was the personal attorney for Coleman. If Henson's bill to the county was indeed double the costs of Barrett then the bill should be itemized. If Williams received nothing from the county toward Coleman's defense, the county finance office should make a statement and clear up the doubts. Williams was then hired by Mrs Vanzant to defend the county in the appeal. Why Williams and not Henson since she had all the background in the case?

All you have to do is ask your commissioner or Mrs. Vanzant why they hired Williams. It is that simple. If your commissioner doesn't know, then you need to vote for someone else next time. You all stir the pot after all the food is gone. What it boils down to is Barrett sued the county and didn't win. It cost the county and Barrett a bunch of money. After two judges said he didn't have grounds for the suit, you all still won't let it go. Quit trying to place blame and admit defeat.

Gov. Wallace was a good man that did some bad things, it happens in everyone's life.
Dr. King was a good man that did some bad things, that is one of the characteristics of us humans. No one is all good or all bad, for the most part we just try to do the best we can with what we have.

Later in life Gov. Wallace tried to apologize and made some giant strides toward showing genuine change in his life.

Mr.Barrett, thanks for helping clear up some things on Gov. Wallace and Dr. King. Gov Wallace was more of a segragationist than racist, there is a difference. Gov. Wallace was a very power hungary man. That was his biggest problem. At one time he would do just about anything to get elected
One of his main issuses was the government telling the states what to do. Thanks, Jerry

I just love it when dumb DEMOCRATS try and label anyone who DARE question any definable group of individuals obvious behavior as being "RACIST".
It's just soooo predictable and typical of your average run of the mill socialist libtard.
Tell me something MR or MRS LIBTARD; who died and left you in charge of the label machine?
OR better yet, why is it you can't stomach the completely legitimate question being asked here?
Don't bother answering cause we already know the correct answer. It's because you simply want to turn everyone's attention away from the obvious reason.
We all know that whenever any person of color in this country dare to act or think as an individual, they are ostracized by the "Group" for acting outside what the "GROUP" considers acceptable.
Exactly the same kinda way "UNIONS" treat anyone who dares to operate outside the confines of the UNION. YOu know; kinda like Nazis.
Everyone knows that there is "strength in numbers". And Jesse and REV AL, maintain their seat at the BIG HOUSE TABLE, as long as they keep delivering the vote for their Democrat Masters. MY my, what our brothers have given up, for a few crumbs and years of empty promises.
Now put that in your commie lib pipe and smoke on it !

I'm pretty sure the "free speech" blogmaster will delete this post, but I'm going to say it anyhow. It's people exactly like you who caused me to re-think my affiliation with the Republican Party. While I could never vote for a Democrat because of issues like abortion and gay marriage, I have washed my hands of the GOP. However, I will vote against Obama next year and will conti nue to be a Ronald Reagan Conservative.

10:48 you will only waste your vote if you go with a third party so you must be voting from the Republican nominee. I also have held my nose and voted for the Republican as the lesser of two evils because I know no third party candidate can possibly win and Obama must be defeated in order to save this nation. At this time Herman Cain is the only conservative that may face Obama next year and I will gladly vote for him even though I still have some reservations about his tax plan.

10:48 What are people like us to do, I don't like the Democrat or Republican parties. A third party want have a chance.

I have always voted for the man I thought would do the best not the party.

I still wonder how anyone can turn this country around. What president let the factories start moving from the US? How do you find jobs when they are all gone?

The president cannot stop private industry from re-locating wherever it wants to go. It's all too convenient to blame that on George Bush, but the fact remains thjat it is private industry, and we are not a socialist country...yet!

7:54 I wasn't blaming Bush, I really didn't remember which President it started under. I thought some started moving under Clinton and I wish he was the president now.

It hasn't been to many years ago factories started moving out of the US for cheaper labor and them get more money. When I say too many years could of been 40 that's not to many to me.

You wish the former liar-in-chief was back in the Oral Office? Are you kidding? I mean...you are joking, right?
As for factories moving out of the country, can we not lay that at the feet of labor unuions? Want to put Americans back to work and see the economy flourish? Our government needs to let those industries come back at no penalty and hire back the Americans who lost their jobs when they left. That would seem far more plausible than what Obama did by throwing money at the banks.

When did obama throw money at the banks?
I agree the unions was the cause of factories moving out of the country.
Wanting cheaper labor. I thought that was what 1:51 was saying.

Factories moved to the south to get away from the unions then when the unions came they moved out of the country. High taxes, medical benefits and cost of doing business keeps them out of the country. Our tax penalties on business is among the highest in the world.
Obama is a self proclaimed socialist, read his book to see it, and a socialist believes evertything should be controlled by the government not the people and all the profits should go to fund the government.
As for throwing money at the banks where have you been, that's what the first trillion is stimulus was used for, to pay off those who contributed the most to obama.s campaign.
