Why Do We Recycle And Why Is It So Costly?

I've asked this question before but thought maybe it's time to ask again.

Why is Giles County's recycling program costing the county so much money instead of making money like other counties?

Is it because there is no one actually supervising the program, no one applying for state and federal grants for recycling and waste disposal?  Why do we pay a person to sit in a locked office or in the old records department doing personal tasks instead of conducting county business?

We have a Solid Waste Supervisor being paid by the county but what is he doing? I know, before I get the hate responses,  he is a nice guy but he's not being paid to be a nice guy, to sit behind a locked door or hang out in the Old Records Department.

It's time that the money being spent on Solid Waste be reevaluated and a new job description made that would move the county toward a profitable recycling program and a less costly solid waste program. At the very least the paid supervisor should be taking a more active part in such things as the cleanliness, appearance and activities at the recycle lot.

I don't know anything about Giles county's recycling, but in other places where they pick up the garbage and recycling, I hate it.
I'm bad, I like to throw it all in the same can. I'm sure it's better on landfills to not throw, glass, plastic, cans and papers in the ground if there is other uses for them.

In Marshall and Maury County they have recycling centers where you can drop off your trash and recycled items if you so wish. The one making money in Giles County is Apertain which has a drop off location when you can get rid of segregated recycled items.

As to why Giles County does not embrace recycling? No one in our County Government has the initiative to want such a program. That is they way we did it 200 years ago; to quote one of our long standing and esteem County Commissioners - Tommy Campbell.

When I drive to work in Marshall Co., I like to drop off my recyclables at the bins in Cornersville where they have a nice pull off place that you can drive into and get out and place you items in a lift up top container. You don't have to step into gritty slug when you get out of your car and you dont have to see all the mess like you do at the Appertain building. Why can't Giles County keep up with other counties when it come to accessibility and cleanliness.

What you are suggesting would require ambition and effort from our County leadership. That would be too much.

Anyone know how much the county (we tax payers) are paying Appertain to do the county recycling? This would be over and above what Appertain makes on the recycabel materials. Why dont Giles county have its own recycling program and bring extra thousands of dollars in to the budget instead of paying out and giving our recycabels away?

7:35, I bet your pets even give you sour looks because you complain so much. Do they try to feed and water themselves just to stay away from you?

Seems that 7:35 hit a nerve with 8:02 PM. In my opinion, and I may be wrong, 7:35 just pointed out that the County leadership would rather have things continue as they have been for 200 years, as has been stated by some of the County Commissioners and Mrs. Vanzant. To attempt to introduce anything new and innovative is quite beyond they collective reasoning.

Very well put 6:46. It's a shame how many times the 200 year quote comes up.

There was a company that was on the edge of establishing itself as a tire recycler, but typically like all businesses that don't originate from the established movers and shakers in Giles County, it never came about.

Think the county pays Appertain about $35,000 yearly to run the recycle in town. Then they get the money for all they sell that we folks provide. Why cant the county do their own recycling and stop paying for someone else to do it, we would get the income as well just like other counties do.

The county could do their own recycling if they could get Dan Watson out of the old records department looking up history infomation for his column in the newspaper.

Add the $35,000 to whatever we pay Watson and that is a good start to a public recycling program.

Watson must be costing us around $40,000 in salary plus another third for benefits. That and what we pay Appertain, plus what Appertain makes from the selling of the recycle amounts to a hefty number. What are the commissioners thinking of by letting this situation continue?

Appertain picks up the dead animals from the county which we need.

But we need the businesses who receive the benefit to fund it 5:18.

Picking up of dead animals (which agree with) is a separate issue from a recycling program.

Why should those of us who live in the city pay for dead cows to be picked up from someone whose very lucrative business is raising cattle. The people in the county don't help pay for the dumpsters I have to pay for my business by products,

Is not the picking up of dead animals an environmental and health issue? I for one would rather the dead animal be picked up and go for proper disposal than for the animal to be dragged to the back of a farmer's property and the decomposing be washed into our streams and consequently into our drinking water. And don't say this does not happen 'cos I know of a farmer who did this (easy way out for him). Also look at the problem with dumped animals. It brings more and more vultures into the area which has also been proved a massive problem in other counties.

Can we please get back to the recycling problem.

Why dont our County Officials actually do something productive and start a money making recycling program. Is it too hard for them? It would be a nice venture for our residents. That way Mr. WATSON could have something to do.

The question is "Why Do We Recycle and Why Is It So Costly?"
Folks who care about the planet and its future for our kids recycle. Those of us who recycle want to keep garbage from our landfills, recycle. Those of us who care about what goes into the ground water and ultimately into our bodies, recycle. Many of us who dont want to leave a footprint behind when we pass on, recycle. There are probably other reasons why people go to the time and effort to recycle do it. Maybe other readers will add to the list.

There should not be a cost to our local government to have a county wide recycling program. Surrounding counties run recycling stations and make enough money to pay their employees, plus a decent profit. There are those who will say there is no profit in it but give no facts to back up their statement. If there was no profit, why are there so many companies buying the recyclable materials and most of it getting shipped overseas? Commissioner Tommy Campbell has headed up the Environmental Committee of the county and he appears to be the biggest obstacle in the way of our county not going the route of Lawrence, Maury, Marshall, etc. Giles County's Solid Waste Director is only concerned with keeping the garbage within the tonnage requirements of our State. Time for our 21 commissioners to take charge of the situation and bring about changes.
