Do We Really Need A New High School?

With a continuing decline in population does Giles County really need a new high school?

A new high school was discussed at the last School Board meeting alone with a proposed adoption to board policy. Both issues are addressed in this thread.

A new school really? Redistribute the students and you have plenty room, do some creative scheduling and have school year rounded you have no problem with room, Oh, it's no longer about room is it? Now, the problem is with the physical building and the location. The problem at GCHS as stated in a comment on another thread,  is a lack of appropriate maintenance. Build a new school and use the same maintenance program and in five years you have GCHS all over again. How many times has money been set aside for a new roof or repairs that was never used on the roof? How many times has money been provided for restrooms, plumbing, painting etc that was used for some other thing lower on the priority list. What am I saying there has never been a real priority list that was actually intended to be followed except when Director Webb created one. When will people wake up and acknowledge that there are two high schools in Giles County one for whites and one for blacks, until this situation is fixed, nothing will really be fixed.

Does anyone bother to read the law anymore, certain;y not the school board or they would know that they are already required to disclose conflicts of interest to include "familial relationships in advance of related board decisions".

I have an idea… Why don't we hire people who are not from Tennessee to be teachers at Giles county high school for the next four years? I guarantee you would see such a turn around in the quality of the educational system here in Giles county it would shock people.

Let's repair the school we have any work on the educational system itself.

I disagree with you. There are many outstanding educators who work at GCHS. Your comment is a blanket judgement on the faculty. What an insult you've just given a lot of hardworking, dedicated, and committed teachers! Do you know each individual assigned to that school?

Jackson refused to budget money for repairs. There was plenty of money spent on roof patches but that is all. There has not been plans to completely redo roofs on Giles County schools. Jackson planned on building a high school in Pulaski and his plan was to let the schools go to ruin so that there was no other choice. He came close to doing that. Money has constantly been spent on roof but instead of complete replacement or repair of an entire roof it was just done in spots.

My high school is about the same age as Giles County High. And, I am very proud to have graduated from a school that is #111 in the nation and is #3 in Virginia.

What is the difference between Woodson High and Giles County High????? At Woodson High the teachers are treated well by students, the school system and the parents. The Fairfax County school system emphasizes academics then sports. We in Giles County can do the same.

Fairfax County Virginia made a strategic decision in the 1960's to improve the county school system. Giles County can do the same. Why can not Giles County be the very best in all of Tennessee????? There is no reason that Giles County can have a school system that is nationally ranked and that the student that graduate from this system is the very best in Tennessee.

To do so requires that Giles County has the guts to place academics first, sports second. Maintain our infrastructure as it should and give our teachers the very best environment possible to nurture and teach our children.

Fairfax County use to be a horrible school system, actually worse than Giles County; and, now it is nationally ranked. Why not Giles County??????

I am sure that there will be a few of you who will disagree; but, that's life. Our children are our future, let's not let them down.

What does the quality of education the students have to do with getting a new building? The building has nothing to do with the kind of education you get.
Why does England and Germany have buildings built in the 16 and 17 hundreds look new and in America it tear it down and build new forget about keeping buildings up?

Academics then sports. My child has two classes where there are not enough textbooks to go around, rooms with inadequate heat and air, but God forbid we have an issue with the football program...

I agree with 3:20 pm. The school system is too incestuous. The majority of the teachers are graduates of the Tennessee University system and/or they were born and raised in Tennessee...many of them right here in Giles County.

I'm sure there are many dedicated teachers but they are simply regurgitating the same material over and over again. We need some fresh blood in this county, new ideas, new ways of looking at things, new ways of teaching. Start hiring teachers who are not from here, or Tennessee and I think we will see a difference.

Once that gets into order then we can worry about the buildings.

To 4:57:00 PM. I don't think you have to know each individual teacher. I think all you have to do is look at the test scores, look at the results of the proficiency rating of a Giles county high school student and their readiness for any kind of post secondary education.

It's embarrassing and it needs to be fixed.

It's a simple as that.

When you hire teachers from out of the state, county or district, they soon leave because those teachers want to be near home and will move back as soon as something opens in their district. Giles County has many magnificent teachers. Don't judge all by the lack of a few.
Back to the high school and a need for a new one. There needs to be ONE high school in this county.

How are test scores judged? One school could have very slow students that aren't capable of doing to the work. It wouldn't be right to judge that school by one that has very smart students. What about home life? Doesn't that have something to do with what they are capable of doing? Just like a winning ball team. Some people are just natural ball players and some want to real bad, but just can't do it.

That is a great excuses to make someone within a poor performing school feel good about themselves and point fingers at someone else. Let’s be honest, finger pointing is probably why the system is the way it is.

Let’s look at the football program. Good coach = State winning team. Now, a VERY similar team with a different coach = 0-6. Is that the kids fault or the coaches? I’m sure a coach COULD say, not all of those kids are a Bo Wallace so it’s not my fault….or is Bo Wallace the product of a Great Coach?

Continuing with the football analogy, in this system if a teacher where held to the same standards as the coaches…anyone that didn’t perform would be asked/forced to leave in the middle of the year. However, anyone that was an awesome teacher would have an organization of parents selling an array of tasty meat and baked products to raise money to give them a bonus at the end of the year.

So, I have no idea why the system is in its current state.

To the blog,

There should only be one high school. It would help stop some of the divide between the north end and rest of the county. You all know, Richland got “this” or GCHS has “that”. You would also have to come up with a new name for the one high school.

I just hope they pay for a real inspector when a building is built. So we don’t end up with the issues that have been plaguing the Richland elementary school (cheap individual AC units) or PES roof leaking. Oh, inspector does not mean an engineer form Nashville that shows up once a month or a person from the bus garage going once a week. An inspector is a person that watches them building it and makes sure they are building it to the drawings.

Tea J., your post is excellent. However, if a new school is built, I think it should be called Giles County High School. If it's one building to serve all high school students in the county, why name it anything else?
It could be called Pulaski High School, but there are a lot of students from outside the city limits. What do you think would be a suitable name? How about Giles High School?

A Fox News commentator who has been lying for years about working for the Central Intelligence Agency was arrested on Thursday and is being charged in connection with falsely claiming he worked as an “Outside Paramilitary Special Operations Officer” for the CIA for nearly three decades.

Wayne Simmons, a 62-year-old who lives in Annapolis, Maryland, was arrested by federal authorities following his indictment by a federal grand jury for allegedly committing major fraud, wire fraud, and making false statements to the government. Simmons claims to have worked for the CIA from 1973 to 2000, and "used that false claim in an attempt to obtain government security clearances and work as a defense contractor, including at one point successfully getting deployed overseas as an intelligence advisor to senior military personnel," according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.

In court documents, federal prosecutors alleged that Simmons had a "significant criminal history, including convictions for a crime of violence and firearms offenses, and is believed to have had an ongoing association with firearms notwithstanding those felony convictions." They successfully petitioned a judge to keep Simmons' indictment sealed until his arrest today, noting that Simmons "has a history of acting in an aggressive manner, and is likely aware of the imminent nature of the charges in this case."
YouTube

Simmons has been interviewed by Sean Hannity, Neil Cavuto and has appeared on "Fox & Friends." He has discussed a wide range of issues on the network, including CIA interrogation techniques and, ironically, a former CIA official found guilty on fraud charges. He is a member of the "Citizens Commission on Benghazi," a panel created by the conservative media organization Accuracy in Media that has trafficked in in conspiracy theories about the 2012 attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, in which several officials were killed.

In a radio interview with Brian Kilmeade earlier this year, Simmons -- who was identified as a Fox News contributor -- said the Obama administration is the worst the country will ever know. But a Fox News spokesperson told The Huffington Post that “Kilmeade falsely identified Simmons as a contributor in April,” and said that Simmons "was a guest only and is not a paid commentator for the network, nor has he ever been.”

Federal authorities allege Simmons falsely claimed he was recruited by the CIA and that his previous arrests and criminal convictions "were directly related to his supposed intelligence work for the CIA," according to the indictment. The U.S. actually did grant him an "interim secret security clearance" after he was hired as a "Human Terrain System Team Leader" by a government contractor, the indictment stated.

The CIA “is working closely with the Justice Department on this matter,” Ryan Trapani, a CIA spokesperson, told HuffPost.

I don't think the community has the balls to say no to the county commissioners or school board about appropriations for another school. There are far too many issues that need to be resolved before thinking about building a new school, especially putting the names of the board members on that plaque. Don't let them put anything in place without proper community approval. Hold your board member and commissioner to your desires and not theirs.

If you can't lay pipe for a water line in Lynnville or develop the I65/64 interchange how do you propose building a new school and having it finished before the next century? One look at the "newest" schools in the county and you know what a mess new schools have been. In fact every project started by this county in the past ten years has been a disaster with cost over runs and time delays then afterward it starts falling apart within the first couple of years. Take a look at Southside, Pulaski Elementary, Richland, GCHS all disasters.

Dear blog readers,

I believe we are off topic. We could play the “what if” game all day about politics. Like, If Clinton would have dropped out in 1992 and supported Ross Perot, than Perot would have won.

My interpretation of this topic is do we need a new building for education and or a single high school. I would like to see us debate on something productive, rather then fall into our old ways of bashing someone we did not support or do not like.

Sincerely,

It is really a shame. Embarrassing. One school would be great but do it for the right reasons. This town is split and unfortunately it will always be because it is being taught as it is in the world as well. Education should be number one but it never is especially when sports are involved. So many other issues going on that our teachers have to go through. Some over look it and some confront it but asked to brush under the rug. Let me ask you this, do you know what your child is doing? With who? The color? Sex? Drugs? Cursing the teachers? Bullying? Alcohol? Should I go on? Sure a new school would be great, but I and myself feel other things HAVE to be confronted first, otherwise you will just have one high school with the same issues. This is not just Giles High and it also Richland. No one is exempt especially when there are parents that are not hands on at school. DO YOU REALLY KNOW THE TEACHERS WELL ENOUGH TO CRITICIZE? School Board is there for their personal reasons. As above said, we can bash all we want, but we put these people in. Wish they would see what is really going on. It would and will be different when it would or will involve their child or grandchild, then they will finally see some things more clearly. Sadly some get caught in the circle of evil. If everyone is always working against one another rather than together, you can have the finest building of life or a tin building, does not matter!

So, a new high school? One for the entire county? When was the last time you drove the length & breadth of Giles County? Good grief people, do you want some of your youngsters commuting 90+ mins/day?

While I know there's no going back, think to yourself what happened to our communities during school consolidation. It's my belief that our education establishment is already over-centralized, we've reached a point of minimal local/community control of our children's education, and the solution isn't to further consolidate while betting that our historically ignorant school board will manage one HS better than two. Parents who want greater control & teacher/principal accountability should be arguing for decentralization and smaller community schools, not just a spanking new building that will immediately begin to deteriorate due to our legendary ineptitude in public facility maintenance.

Then there's the monetary expense. Nobody seems to think about these issues in terms of life-cycle. Somebody smart (i.e. not a school board member) needs to cost out what a new building would cost vs maintaining what we currently have. Cost it out for 25 years, capturing the myriad of follow-on costs ... I'm certain we'll be money ahead if we do not build new.

Then there's our history. Any examples in recent GC government of our leaders doing anything smart, accountable, responsible, for the good of the entire county? If you're thinking "yes" you're very much deluded.

Then there's education. Fact is, it doesn't improve with new facilities. Folks, education is a discipline, plain & simple. And our children aren't mentally disciplined, because their parents are the most apathetic boneheads every to make domicile in GC. The apathy boils over into our politics, where we continuously elect public servants who are NOT servants - they're parasitical ignoramuses, completely unable to do their simple jobs, because most were never been educated themselves. It's a generational problem, a character problem, and the problem is us.

Wake up folks ... demand some educational performance from your existing administration of elected "leaders". Make them fix & maintain our existing schools ... require them to discipline minds and educate. Novel concept, right? Show us a decade of consistent performance before starting any more talk of new facilities. How many more times do we get swindled by bumbling corrupticians & incompetent educrats who want to solve all our problems by doubling down with ever more expensive "investments", with the fraudulent claim that building a new schoolhouse shows how much we value our children? Balderdash.

Parents and teachers should stand up and fight for their kids and students. Politics is a sad situation. The School Board is too clueless to realize the technology in today's world. They are being watched. If parents and educators have to go that route, they will. A lot are tired of these people. A lot of teachers are tired of seeing many things happening in our schools. Our kids are suffering not because we live in Giles County but because we put these people in office. Ask Joy where does she work? Where do their kids work? Where do their grand kids work?Kids will not stay here. Why would they? Williamson did not want to get caught up in the deception. He was smart to back off. The school board is too clueless to realize they are hurting their own families just the same. Handicapping them just as they are. Fix what is happening in the schools first! It could very well be your child or grandchild that WILL suffer.

Hopefully you are not an educator. It is "choose" and "an excellent". Any good people that have been on past boards and on this present board always were out voted by the ones that were and are carefully placed on the board. There are good ones on there now, but again, out voted. Go to the school board meetings or look at the past films. Some are online. There are a lot of good people in Giles County. Some do not want to run because they know the system and if anyone is an outsider, they are not wanted.

Parents need to step up. It is easy to complain which many do, but if you do not do a single thing about it or express your thoughts, then do not complain. When the meetings were being held at each school many showed up. It was about choosing a director but parents and teachers were there. Have you been to a meeting lately? Have you asked parents to attend? Asked to speak? That is what NEEDS to happen, but it won't. But it can if people would just stand up. It can happen. Has before. Will it work? Probably not, because this is Giles County and has been this way for years and years and will always be as long as there are the "behind the scenes people." $$$

I do admit, my daughter struggled at first and did go out of state, but she over came it. She is finished and doing well as a physician's assistant in another state. Proud of her! It is a shame, because some of the kids today with the schools probably worse when my child was there, a lot will not make it.

I remember a few years ago some people got so upset that they tried to speak at a school board and was arrested when they had the trial the school system the board and the director looked so ridiculous they was forced to allow people to speak at the end of meetings, that has ended now with people like Lovell running the show. When he was a commissioner he was always against people speaking at meetings and now he is still against the public, it's his way or else and his way is ignorant dictatorship. Rhonda Turner resigned because she was fed up with the lies and bullying.Who will replace her either an ex-commissioner or someone connected to a school paycheck.

If I could make a recommendation… Why not look around and see if there are some retired educators who have retired here to Tennessee who would be willing to sit on the school board. See if there is a retired professor or a retired principal....As long as they're not from around here and then maybe you could get some good input, Some good perspectives.

Just a suggestion

I just all the public remembers all this when election time comes. Brewer, Holt and Parker say they only want to serve one term and leave. They leave the system is such a disarray that it will take years to recover. Such hatred, racism and vindictive people there now.

Giles County does not want outsiders. They only wanted the one term so they can make sure Smith did not get in. Racism will always be here because families of the "past" keep it alive. It is a wonder why people show so much hatred to one another, black and white. Brewer, Lovell and Holt may run into some of those folks one day. Seen them do a lot in my day in Giles County.

Dear Wednesday, October 21, 2015 5:49:00
PM,

Thank you for pointing out my grammar errors. That is what I get for posting from my droid. There is no need to be belittling in your post or the snide comments in regards to the teaching profession.

I will put your mind at easy, I am not an educator. However, grammar and writing skills are not the only subject taught in school. Such as, I could be an Engineer at Redstone responsible for the test and analysis of UAV for the military. I may be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), at a multinational company. I might also be a Math Teach, whom lied in the previous statement. Thought written communication is important, it is not always mastered by all professions.

I made your suggested corrections. I do appreciate your post, but realize you never answer my questions. So:

1.) Who is or has been the best school board member in your opinion?
2.) Why did you choose this person?
3.) Who in this county would make an excellent school board member?
4.) Why did you choose this person?

Tea J.

You may not agree with the results of democratic process, but it was very evident what voters wanted. All of us should respect that.

For a man who could not keep his job because he was a hot head and the Marshall County director fired him, how can he lead a county school system. He could not handle being an assistant principal. Lack of intelligence, motivation and leadership were all his trademarks. He said he retired. More like FIRED. Leadership is really lacking in the county school system. Wright is such a puppet and knows so little about this county, the students or the teachers. He has to be told everything to do and from the infamous Cindy Young and the little gecko "Gonzo."

THE GILES COUNTY COMMISSION WILL MEET IN REGULAR SESSION NEXT WEEK. THE AGENDA INCLUDES ELECTING A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER TO COMPLETE THE TERM OF RHONDA TURNER. APPLICANTS ARE PIERRE BILLARD, JOHN MITCHELL, LILLIAN HOWARD, TITUS GILBERT, CHUCK BOGGS AND ZACH WATKINS. MEMBERS WILL CONSIDER RESOLUTIONS TO AMEND THE BUDGETS FOR THE COUNTY GENERAL FUND AND THE SCHOOL FUND, APPROVAL OF SURETY BONDS FOR COUNTY OFFICIALS AND EMPLOYEES, PLACING A SPEED LIMIT OF 35 MILES PER HOUR ON LYNN CREEK ROAD AND 30 MILES PER HOUR ON GUTHRIE ROAD, AND APPROVAL OF A REVISED COLLECTION AND WRITE OFF POLICY FOR THE AMBULANCE SERVICE, AMONG OTHER ITEMS. THE MEETING WILL BE HELD MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH AT 9 A-M AT THE COURTHOUSE.
Do you want to take bets as to whom the commissioners will place in the vacant board seat? I see that they are amending the budget for the school board. They would not allow that last year! Hypocrites.

Willing to bet you already know. Vanzant already knows who she wants to keep the ball rolling. That ball will bounce back sooner or later. It is kind of funny really. The commissioners and school board are there for their own purpose. Not for any of us. Even the teacher Goolsby could care less. Use to think she was fair and honest but saw differently when she won office. To think that little position makes someone's head big. Over years a lot have done that to them. The mayor is the same. A total change. Politics always in the picture. Massive changes for next school year. Major moves and replacements. I think some will be terribly surprised. Some cruel ones on the board and commissioners. Some I have known a long time and honestly disturb me on how they think and how they feel about people and willing to do anything to get their way. But that ball will bounce back hard.

It was known that Donna Cobb was going to be promoted. Elkton denied it but Cobb of course did not tell them. A lot of people disappointed in being deceived by a "friend". Cobb will run to the hill so fast and act as though she never worked with some. Interesting things happening on the hill. You would be surprised what some would do to get where they are but then would we? All is falling into place as the "Typical Giles Countians" said it would. Lots of changes next school year. As the above said, that ball will bounce back hard. Planning tricks on the sports side. Some conflict of interests and more will happen. But oh that is right, this is Giles County so any rule or policy can be broken. All will be known and I AM SURE the public will welcome the whole official school board soon at a SPECIAL meeting that is in the planning process, so hope the board is ready for it. People are involved more behind the scenes for now. My daughter is sick and tired of what is happening in the schools and who is getting away with so much. Yes she is in the school system along with many more that are fed up. People cannot cover their tracks forever. Someone always slips up. I tell my daughter, do not trust a sole there. The new director is a con artist and not a truthful person. He is a back stabber and falls right in with the other back stabbers on the board. They chose him because he does EXACTLY what they say. He hired a woman, who like he, knows nothing about the students, teachers or school to which she was appointed. Several good people were in this county that could have done a great job, but NO, let's hire someone else from outside. Keep it up county, you will soon see. There are several things happening in the meetings and back rooms of board member homes. Be warned. Some bad changes coming are coming. Never have I heard so many teachers complaining about incompetence and a director who loves to talk about himself to anyone who will listen.

Board is too stupid to realize that people are not out of tune as to why they have done the things they have. Also too stupid to realize they are being watched. The things that people do to get their way. Some people would do anything with anyone to get to where they think is a high place. At this point, I would be embarrassed to say I worked there because other counties look at Giles County as a joke. Some changes are coming and hope the board is ready for the teachers and the system to confront them. Nothing to do with the parents at this point. They proved that in the spring that they did not care for the people. Let's see how they care for the teachers. Good Luck school board. You are going to need it. In a game, someone else on the other side always has to make their move.

Of course there is. Teachers and staff are fed up except for the ones that are walking around at Wright's ankles. As in Giles County all of mine and all of your lives I am sure, some people are just out for themselves and believe me there are some grinning in each other's faces but ready to throw them under the bus. It is kind of funny to watch it and have for lounge talk. The bad part of it all is that the students and teachers suffer especially the ones that care. Always a peeping Tom, a Sally or Jim. The world is a greedy place even when it comes to a little school board wanting things their way and wanting certain people out. We were not surprised about Ms. Cobb, just did not know what the "position" would be. She did Brewer a favor so Mr. Chairman had to make something happen. Not surprised about Coach. We knew that already, Tom was a busy body,so now waiting on the next stage. It WILL be interesting. Giles County is a big county but when someone wants to find out something, not hard at all. Does the board think that teachers and staff are stupid? Some will do what they have to do the RIGHT way to protect their jobs. Board may want to keep an eye out on their rear view mirrors. Evil does not succeed forever. A lot of personal issues on the board but not here to slander anyone on the hill or the schools, because you all probably already know from Tom.

Well, the new director walked into GCHS with police protection to fire the SRO. Brewer, Holt, Parker Lovell and Wright (Wrong) skunks in a cage. Brewer is running around like he is the director and telling principals what to do. They send Wrong to pretend he has made the decision so that the public will not realize what they are doing. They hired a black principal at Elkton to smooth the waters in the black community. That won't work any more than trying to close Bridgeforth or change several principals at the end of the year.

Games being played. Brewer is in for a rude awakening and hiring the black lady at Elkton will not do anything for the black community. The white and the black clearly know their personal reasons behind everything. Prejudice and hate on that board. It is not just the black they have to worry about. People know they are wanting to move Cardin. And make some moves from elsewhere and even moves with the sports. We are SURE they will have some more headaches approaching them. Teachers and parents may not win, but it is a different subject this time around. Peeping toms are right under their noses and they are too ignorant to realize it. Wright is just making himself look like an ass just like all the rest of them. Wamble is the only one on that board that cares for his community. He is great with our community and represents the board well.

When Wright is getting paid the salary he is getting and has SOME power not much, what does he have to worry about? Brewer walks around like he is king. Poor thing, if that is how he wants to feel important and makes vindictive decisions only due to the past and sports. We all know why Holt's reasons of even why he got himself on the board. Brewer also. Lovell and McMasters Aunt Janet. Wouldn't that be something one of his or her kids or grand kids bring home a girl or boy home to meet grandpa. Would be kind of funny to see his face if they are black. Just hope for him or her, maybe they will prefer it to be someone of the same sex or someone that runs a meth lab. Maybe he or she would prefer that. Hits home for a lot of people and will hit even more in years to come. A lot to think about when people have kids or grandkids growing up in today's world. Like 2:51 says, headaches they will have but in more ways than one in different areas of their life. All of us go through major things in life and they are not special just because they are on the GILES COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. Some of the chosen brown nosers for positions to the big hill from within the schools too. Ask a couple of teachers and some staff from the schools how things have hit their lives with their kids or grandkids. A couple of former principles. Hits many. The priorities of the board has always been in an opposite direction, but this time around, how much more obvious can they make it?

Instead of money going elsewhere for other reasons, it should go into the schools for the education of the kids. It is going to be interesting as 6:03. There is so much happening in the school system right now that is being hidden from the public. Now the system is going to be in a law suit with a student at Richland and the SRO at GCHS. Needing a police escort shows a lack of leadership and the gall to think they can do what they want,(WITHOUT PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE). I agree with a previous post, too much being spent on non essentials and not enough on academics and the students.

For sure not enough money to academics. Their headaches have not yet begun. If the money was being spent in the correct areas, it would be a better engineering dept, computer dept and have enough books in the classes for students, more for science, math and English areas and so on. Should I go on? There are many good teachers in Giles County but not enough resources and tools to teach. It will get worse before it gets better.

Richland Principal Micah Landers reprimanded a girl publicly in the cafeteria as the day closed because her shirt said something about gays.

No matter who believes what, yes should have been private. No matter what the topic, should be confronted privately with an assistant or another teacher present. Administration and School Board are going about things in the wrong direction and process. The mess they had when they booted out Mr.Smith was nothing compared to what can go on messing with people's kids. They may want to look at the news. People can protest anywhere! Professionalism and beliefs cannot get intefere as teacher, principal, board and so forth. Naturally people will believe in different things. Correction, Lovell and along with a couple of more were appointed by the lovely commissioner's office. So maybe you may want to check your records. Cannot vote for others if one is just running in your district, as in Jot McMasters, Vanzant's family, so that is someone we have to settle for. This board does not have the schools at heart. It is out of control and do not see it getting better. So, all want change but you cannot change something that has been going on forever in good ole Giles County. How some handle themselves confronting people in general is shameful. Brewer and his buddies are trying to run things, but all we see for them is more legal fees to pay. Do not even care to go on at this point. I will shut up because I am not a parent but a grand parent. Also, I will not tell you to shut up because that is your opinion and I dare not to put myself on your level. You cannot have real change when too many are playing games behind the scenes but that usually comes out.

They went away to Nashville a couple of weeks ago and made many decisions that will affect the county for years. Four members making decisions for the entire school system. Holt claims he wants to help Richland, but he is the one who continues to try and remove either Landers or his wife. Brewer cannot find his way out of a wet paper bag, but he thinks he is the Einstein of education. He could not keep his job in Marshall County. Lovell is the most arrogant, racist and "it's my way" person there. McMasters just had a cold heart that will have to be softened sooner or later. She spit on her sister in-law and smiled the entire time. What a terrible atmosphere our school system had gotten itself into. The SRO is as much about politics and getting rid of his wife too as anything. You will hear more about this as it evolves. The schools need a SRO. It is also politics as to who's umbrella the SRO position should be, the city or county.

From this point, if something happens to just one child, you will see some furious parents at the board, in the board, outside of the board, everywhere. You DO NOT mess with ANYONE's KID! Messing with their education is one thing, but looking at who is the majority of the board, even education could not help those pour souls, but you mess with someone's kid, whole different story. Parents are sick of this and I only hope teachers and parents combined stand up together. After all, it is their protection too.

Why is the public not told what is wrong?

The public has no reason or right to know what goes on with any elected official. All that is required of the public is for them to shut up, not make waves and do what they are told to do.

When you speak of the board, there are at least two that are above the mess that has been created. They are not of the FOUR in control of what happens with the whole board. The FOUR are corrupt and without concern for what is best for the children, teachers or school system. They are for the FOUR and power they think they have. Now you see their input to the director to remove the SRO was incorrect and now will face another lawsuit. Whether one liked or disliked Office Mitchell, he was needed in the schools to help with situations beyond a principal's job. Walking him out of the building and embarrassing him in front of students is the same a principal doing that to a teacher in front of the students. That SRO/teacher looses all authority in the face of the students. The mess continues at the cost of students and the school system. Our children are losing much more than you can ever imagine. With SRO's and teachers being treated as such, do you think they are happy. Unhappy teachers mean poorly taught students. It all goes back to those on the board and director.

One would assume that our school system would be able to teach children to read and understand the written word. NOT IN GILES COUNTY

The school board is incapable of reading and understanding a written agreement/contract with the City of Pulaski.

I may be incorrect; but, I am willing to bet that the SRO reprimanded some students whose parents have connections and pull with elected officials and those officials reacted as they normally do (Knee jerk) without regard to law.

What the HELL ..... this is the way we have done it for 200 years (Right Tommy Campbell?????)

The SRO's job is not to reprimand a student. The SRO is not the disciplinarian, that is the job of the principal and assistant principal or teachers. Ask a Giles County student how they see the SRO.

As sworn police officers, SROs play a unique role in preserving order and promoting safety on campus by, for example:

Assuming primary responsibility for handling calls for service from the school and in coordinating the response of other police resources
Addressing crime and disorder problems, gangs, and drug activities occurring in or around the school
Making arrests and issuing citations on campus
Providing leads and information to the appropriate investigative units
Taking action against unauthorized persons on school property
Serving as hall monitors, truancy enforcers, crossing guards, and operators of metal detectors and other security devices
Responding to off-campus criminal mischief that involves students
Serving as liaisons between the school and the police and providing information to students and school personnel about law enforcement matters.

6:23 Did the SRO at Giles County High reprimand your child?

From your post I guess if the SRO sees a child with a gun or knife he should call the principal and by the time the principal gets there someone could be hurt.

Maybe SRO should set in an office reading or etc, waiting for the principal to call him. Let's stop wasting money on these SRO.

8:32, no my child was not reprimanded, I don't have a child in that school. 7:54 did a pretty good description of what an SRO should do and it would include the gun or knife incident. An SRO should be patrolling the school not sitting in an office reading the paper.

What's wrong with a SRO reprimanding a student if he sees them doing something wrong? Don't teachers still stand in the hall when classes are changing and reprimand a student doing something wrong?
Or are the students just left to run wild?

How is the school system going to make progress if there is controversy over changes? There are MANY changes that NEED to happen in order to see growth and progress. So if the director felt the SRO was a liability then the SRO needed to be removed. Why wait for something to happen that will result in a lawsuit that will set the system back AGAIN! I keep seeing on here that there are "more changes to come" like it's some kind of threat? Ewwww...scary! So what if teachers, principals, supervisors, etc. are re-assigned or even let go???? As in any workplace there are employees that are ineffective in their jobs and need to go! Some of the stuff that goes on in the schools would NEVER be tolerated in businesses and corporations.

9:55 I could not agree more!!!!!!

I can think of 4 members of the School Board that need to go. They place their personal agendas ahead of reality. The School Director ought to crank down his gain a bit and take the time to understand his surroundings before jumping off the wagon.

9:55 you are correct in many ways. Changes have to be made. All work places go through change and in today's world, you cannot please everyone! A lot is going on in the schools. A lot of good people in the schools but a lot of dead weight too sad to say. School Board has to do things for the right reasons and hopefully they are. As far as for law suits, well they will probably go through a few of those no doubt. Hope they are keeping their noses clean. Change will happen and I am sure it's no threat. Anytime there is a new administration there is always change. Everyone should know that. That is common sense.

Obviously 9:55 is a board member, Dunnavant or Wright's wife. The director determined SRO was a "liability." Well, the board knew what he was going to do. They supported him. Changes are needed, BUT for the RIGHT reasons. How much will this lawsuit cost the system?

8:46 agree with you. If not a member one of their soldiers. It probably cost them another law suit and probably more. Easy to complain but if you do not attend meetings or confront issues well then you fall into their trap. That's what they want. All does not go smooth forever if things are being done for the wrong reasons. A lot will sit back and say I should have. I attended the last meeting I will attend. Cannot even bare to watch any longer.

It is sad. The damage has reached a point that it will take years to repair, if it can be done then. Most recently, Donna Cobb gets a promotion because she could not perform the duties of an elementary principal. There is word that the GCHS principals will be removed. Word is too, some board members are pressing to remove BMS principal. They also hired someone as a principal at Elkton that was not certified as a principal in Tennessee. That is a violation.

Next School Board meeting is at Minir Hill I think. Parents should voice their opinions. At last meeting board says they will conduct a survey about a new high school. People that supported Mr. smith should not be punished. But that's politics. I do not even know why some put their hand on their heart to say the pledge and then followed in a prayer while thinking of a motive or a way to get what you want in revenge. Giles County will have a tough road before it gets better. My child will not be attending Giles County. She is at a critical age and things happen anywhere but we as parents feel attending a private school is better at this time. There are good teachers in Giles County. Board will lose them sooner or later. The ones that supported Smith that were sincere stood behind him. Some were just for the limelight until the fire got too hot! They have to live with that and board has to live with their choices too. We all have the right to our own choices in life. But people, teachers and friends surprise you! Lovell, Brewer, McMasters and Holt along with several commissioners are in it for the wrong reasons. Maybe they are the type of people that will sit back later in life and feel remorse, but I doubt it! We all have to face our demons!

They still have Mrs. Young and Gonzales talking into Wright's ear. When you have leaders that care more about their jobs and not about the students, this is what happens. Deflect all the bad going on in our school system with the idea of building a new high school. The survey ask if YOU are willing to pay more in property taxes. HELL NO! Wright lives in Giles County but not from Giles County. All can run their mouths. Changes will be made no doubt but in every job that happens and politics always plays a part! Anything that may be happening in a dishonest way, as said above it all comes out. Others can let it go to their heads. I know a lot are miserable at Southside! But s lot are miserable at all schools. A lot of the teachers talk the talk but when time to act they back up like a turtle. I say stop whining and if people hate their jobs go else where. Some wanted Smith but they sure did not have the courage to speak up and back him. Mr Wright is the director and others are on staff that many are not surprised about. If they want a job that bad and if conducting in a way that is not right, it WILL be revealed. There is always someone watching and when push comes to shove, before someone has to take blame for something, I assure you they will throw others under the bus. I use to look at Ms Young and Ms Hayes differently, but some people do change.. Their choices, their life! As long as the kids are treated right that is all that matters. If I ever walk into a school and a child is treated badly or degrading, THAT IS A PROBLEM.! Has happened before and that person no longer works in the system. Kids are different today, but you CHOOSE to be a teacher! If you are being a teacher to have the summer off you may want to rethink your career! School Board is what it is! Every dog has his day!

Lots of "racism" talk being thrown around here, but it does not happen at the hill. If it did then that tall skinny nappy head ooverpaid person that Smith gave illegal raises to would be gone. No education but occupying a high position only because she is a black woman. That is racism. Mr Smith would be the Director of schools if he had not made those illegal moves. If Smith had been white , he would now be on jail. He is a great educator but he made some costly mistakes trying to promote blacks who did not qualify for jobs.

Three former Cheatham County principals will now receive back-pay after TEA files suit against the district for unfairly demoting the three administrators. TEA filed suits on behalf of three administrators after former Cheatham County Director of Schools Tim Webb demoted each principal without completing proper evaluations. “This ruling proves that an appropriate, fair evaluation system is just as it is for teachers,” said Rick Colbert, TEA general counsel. “Fortunately, state law requires districts to evaluate administrators to protect them from being arbitrarily targeted like what occurred in this case.” All three administrators were transferred to teaching positions by former director of schools Tim Webb and the end of the 2011-2012 school year. Webb failed to conduct evaluations on the three administrators as required by both state and Cheatham County board policies.
The judge ruled all three administrators receive monetary damages for what Webb did to them.

It is a complete waste of energy for you to try to convince anyone that they were on his side. Those of us who paid attention know better. Furthermore, the board had a complete disregard for their constituents. It's over now. They have do live with their actions. I hope karma is as good to them as I would like for it to be.

8:32 Was it your child?
Do you think kit's alright for a child to break line?
Are there no teacher or anyone that can correct a child watching these students?
Was the SRO told to watch the students?

If the next SRO happen to see one student knock another down or pull a knife on him is he allowed to do anything?

Why do we have SRO's in the schools if they can't do anything?

You need to read the "rules and regulations" established by the State. You will be surprised as I was, but that is how it is .

If I want to pinch that pretty girl and the SRO is standing by me I can go ahead. WOW!

Why do we have SRO's in our schools?
County not have enough to spend money on?

If a SRO sees a student slip a gun out of his backpack all he can do is run for principal and maybe a few get shot while he is looking for principal.
This means my child isn't as safe in school with the SRO as I thought.

8:32 said the SRO grabbed someone that broke in line, could this not have stopped a fight? Just a question I wasn't there and don't know if the ones he got in front of cared or if the person breaking in line did that often.

All of you highly educated people who know all the facts and so state them on this blog site need to go back to school. TN law does not define the responsibilities or duties of a SRO other than requiring a memorandum of agreement between the school system and the Sheriff. https://www.tn.gov/education/article/school-resource-officer-programs This is the web site that lays out what is required between the Giles County school system and the Sheriff' s office. It is the memorandum that sets forth the duties, responsibilities of a SRO and coordination between that SRO and the school system and the local school principal.

Now go to that web site, read (if you are so capable) and then comment. I also suggest that you read whatever memorandum has been agreed upon between Sheriff Helton' s office and the school system.

I realize that this may be an imposition to most of you but, give it a shot.

True 6:07 because there is so much more going on in the schools, the SRO is probably minor!

A good school is when people work together. We do not have that here in Giles County. People too busy minding someone else's business. Others too scared someone may jump ahead of them or get something better. Unfortunately that is the world today in many places. School Board cannot even get along with each and with the public. Several solicited votes they knew they could get and you know what happens with the appointed ones. If Giles County, parents and teachers keep letting things run this way, our kids and grand kids will not and have not had the tools for their future if they are wanting to get into other professions other than farming or factory working. Nothing against either one at all. My husband works in a factory, but he wanted more for our daughter. We will work twenty jobs if we have to just so she can be what she wants to be. The point is, you can build a new school. If there is no foundation and backing, you have nothing! Also guess where the money would come from? Our pockets which are mighty low now. NO TO NEW HIGH SCHOOL. Fix the ones we have!

AMEN

Take the money for a new High School and spend it on a concise plan to up grade existing structures and increase teacher salaries.
