It would be nice to hear what mr.gordon has in mind to do for the county. I know he must have a platform, it's interesting all the past history, things he has done, but what about plans for the future of giles county? I think that is what most people would like to know. I'm looking forward for this information.
thank you in advance

I agree very much with Whitt's comment above. Was very disappointed in Mr Gordon's response to questions in this week's paper, he just didn't say anything. When I read of a candidate's list of boards, etc they have/are on, it turns me off that candidate. If we really want change maybe we need to vote for the least unnconnected people. Now someone will come along and say it helps for our elected officials to have those connections and my response is - to a point. But it also keeps that "good old boy" thing going.

Please understand we've never been in the political arena. Would you please explain what you mean by the term... good old boy thing?

The questions and answers printed in this weeks paper were written before Glenn had attended any meetings. After attending some school board and county commissioners meetings he added to the basic answers and I am posting them now.
Jo Anne Gordon

Questions for Paper

Have you read the duties and responsibilities of the county executive as prescribed by state law? Which aspects of the job do you see as most important and how are you qualified to perform them? Be specific and detailed.

Answer:
Yes, I have read the duties and responsibilities of the County Executive.
A balanced budget is obviously a priority. We must be sensitive to spending in all areas. Balancing a budget of any size is never easy, but income and expenses must parallel. Many times budget cuts are painful but necessary. I have experience in budgets in two areas. I will attempt to broaden the tax base with new industry and growth without an increase in property tax.

What changes would you implement that would make the county executive’s office more effective and useful to taxpayers over the next four years?

Answer:
A positive working relationship with all members of the County Commission. With several new members it is important that everyone has respect for all opinions. We may not agree on every issue but must make positive decisions for Giles County residents.

Explain your position on updating the county’s accounting system.

Answer:
The County Financial Act of 1981, used by 15 counties in Tennessee, could be a system that would benefit Giles County. I feel the cost of setting up an office and hiring a director should be weighed carefully, against the possible savings. I think this new accounting system has possibilities

Identify and explain at least three goals you would like to accomplish over the next four years if elected.

Answer:
(1) Property tax increases is especially hard on Senior Citizens and
fixed income residents. I feel alternative means must be explored
before, raising property tax.

(2) Pursue all possible grants that would benefit Giles County.

(3) Attend all meetings, participate with the present aggressive group to
continue working on recruiting new industry and work
closely with existing industry. Recruiting for industry is very
competitive, but I will work hard and try my best to succeed in this
endeavor.

(4) Education must be a priority with all Citizens, to enhance
industry and further our student’s future advancements.

(5) I will prepare and summit all paperwork required of the County Executive.

Please include any additional information about yourself that you believe the people of Giles County needs to know.

Answer:
I am a life-long resident of Giles County. I was born and raised, along with two brothers and two sisters, in the Tarpley Shop Community.
My parents are Lee, a carpenter/painter and Alice Marks Gordon, a housewife, both deceased. In 1978 we moved to a farm in the Blooming Grove Community, where we still reside.

After attending Martin College, I worked at Sun-drop Bottling Company in the afternoons and on Saturdays, while I was teaching school. Also, during this time, I attended night and weekend classes at Middle Tennessee State University.

In 1974, we purchased the Sundrop Bottling Company and operated
it until selling in 1986.

I was the first person employed by Ganton/Internet, remaining Human Resource Manager for over 15 years, until retirement in 2004

thank you ms. Gordon, for posting the information about your husband. It is very informative, the only part that that is confusing is this,

The questions and answers printed in this weeks paper were written before Glenn had attended any meetings. After attending some school board and county commissioners meetings he added to the basic answers and I am posting them now.
Jo Anne Gordon

Did this mean that mr. Gordon had never attended any meetings of the county commission, school board etc. before putting his hat in the race for county exe.??

Hi Ms Gordon:

Three questions please -

1 - Are you serving as your husband's campaign manager?

2 - Was your husband encouraged by any of the current commissioners to run as Co Exec or did he come to the decision himself? If so, what made him arrive at that decision?

3 - Why did Mr Gordon not contact the newspaper and update his answers?

I find it difficult to understand why someone never having attended local county government meetings would all of a sudden decide to run for office. Please explain.

To Whitt:
No, I'm not saying he never attended any meetings before he decided to run for County Executive.

Due to me having an illness for four and half years, he did well to continue working at Intermet during this time. I had a nurse in the daytime and he took care of me at night, since I couldn't walk by myself. For the pass nine months, I have improved and only see the doctor once a month now and I can drive myself.

He is ready to get involved again. I have to tell you though, for the pass five years, we were clueless.

I did email the updated answers to the paper myself. I don't know what happen. If you will notice Mr. Helton's last question, was left off of Glenn's. If you will contact me I will show you the emails I sent to the paper with the dates.

I find the comments listed in this topic enlightening and interesting. Wish more (all) candidates would state their objectives, reasons for running, beliefs on topics of seemingly high interest to citizens such as taxes of any kind, school system administration and budgeting, sports complex, to name a few. I don't mean to be a smart-aleck or derogatory in any way but I have noticed that all comments on the County Executive have been made by Jo Anne Gordon. If Gordon is elected who will be the Exec? This is probably not so strange a question as I believe Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton had a lot of input when husbands were in White House!?!? Why aren't we hearing anything from Glenn?

Mr Gordon states he has read the duties of the County Exec. With his deep understanding of these duties does he think
the job will need two plus secretaries to support him in the office as there is now? In these days of lean management and improved efficiency due to computers, etc very few modern business men have a single personal secretary let alone two of them.

Does Mr Gordon, as County Exec and Chief Financial Officer plan to hold regular monthly staff meetings with other Dept Heads/Directors to keep abreast of the overall progress of individual departments?

Am I the only one that would have liked to read answers from Ms. Vanzant in this weeks Citizen? I thought she would take that opportunity to address some of the many accusations against her, especially all the lies she supposedly has told and the one referred to in the post by WAB. That leaves me to believe there is a problem with her in telling the truth as everyone is stating. BOD

I am glad your husband is aware of the abuse by the county executives office regarding the extra secretary.

Let me enlighten you some more. During OFFICE HOURS, Ms. Vanzant, with Ms. Jones driving, are campaigning on our tax dollars and did you know Ms. Vanzant has in the budget this year, a 6,000.00 raise for Ms. Jones?

Do you see Kaye Gibbons campaigning during office hours? No, she is out after she closes her office.

Mr. Bass this is not a new idea of yours to have meetings in the evening. I believe Commissioner Terry Harwell sponsored a resolution for this very thing this past year - can't remember who co-sponsored with him - but I was there and do remember that it failed only by a narrow margin. I recall that the "retired" commissioners were the ones that voted against it and I recall thinking that they probably didn't want to be bothered to come out at night. But, I sat there thinking how many more people could attend the evening meetings and how many more people could run for commissioner (factory workers and teachers and businesspeople) who can't take off in the middle of the day. I, for one, was disappointed that the resolution failed and hope to see it come up again.

This resolution was jointly sponsored by the following two commissioners:

Terry Harwell District 7
Chris Morris District 3

RESOLUTION 2002-49

Upon motion of Alfred C. Harris and seconded by Terry Harwell, it was orderd by the Court that said resolution be adopted. Upon motion of Chris Morris and seconded by Stoney Jackson, it was ordered that said resolution be amended to have the Commission meet six times a year at
6:00 P. M., which said motion was put to the roll call vote of the Court, the detailed results were as follows, to-wit:

Aye: Alfred C. Harris, Wesley J. Vick, Charles N. Greene, Stoney Jackson, Billy Beets, Chris Morris, Roger D. Reedy, Ronald Shirey, Connie S. Howell, Larry Worsham, Stanley Newton, Butch White, Terry Harwell

No: Ramona Flacy, Barry McMasters, Tim Risner, Edwin Lovell, Bill Holt, Jeff Hatfield, Tommy Campbell, Paul D. Walker.

The County Executive, thereupon, declared motion failed for lack of the two thirds majority required to pass said resolution.

Chris Morris is a write-in candidate for District 3. Originally he had decided not to run again due to time away from family and career. However, due to increased appeals from his constituents he has qualified as a write-in for Commissioner. Chris is campaigning and should he be voted in again I'm sure he will continue to do as good a job if not better than he has in the last four years. We have not always agreed on an issue but he has been one of the hardest working commissioners. Should he be successsful, I will personally ask that he and a colleague again sponsor a resolution to get at least the full commission meetings scheduled for the evenings. The public is always encouraged to "get involved", but how can you with the way meetings are presently scheduled. I've heard it said that if meetings were held in the evenings the elected officials would have to come back after work. Thats not such an imposition especially in light of the 35 hours or less many officials work each week. Maybe we need to petition to get changes made. Anyone else support this?

Saturday, July 08, 2006 3:15:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mr Barrett why would you want meetings held at 6pm every other meeting? Keep it consistent. All meetings should be held in the courthouse. Ambulance committee and Highway committee meet on their own territory which is a turn off to anyone wanting to visit. If you get elected, how about trying for this change as well. There may be a committee to do with the jail that doesn't meet at the courthouse either.

Has anyone seen people in Wal-Mart wearing campaign T-shirts? A while back a man was sitting on a bench in Wal-Mart (not politicking just sitting) with a Damron shirt on. Judge Lee came into the store, saw it, became upset, called the manager over to tell the man he couldn't wear that campaign shirt in Wal-Mart. Wasn't this a form of free speech and this man's right to it violated? And Lee a Judge?!!?

Not only can't he take the competition but he also is making some misstatements about the present judge I guess to try to gain favor. Dear Janet Parker Vanzant,
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON YOU JANET FOR THE LIES YOU STARTED AT YOUR BEAN SUPPER AND AT THE NURSING HOME! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

How do you rationalize the lies you tell on people will not come back to haunt you? I am ashamed to think I knew you and be so wrong about your character. How can you stand there and look into people’s faces and just plain LIE. I will not defend you anymore. You have needlessly hurt so many people’s lives and it is time for you to STOP.You mentioned in your article for the paper that you joined your church at an early age. Please return to some church, any denomination, I don’t care or get some professional help.
Also, to you Chris Morris for spreading the lies and promising to meet with the victims and then not being man enough to face them after they waited over an hour for you to show up. What has happened to you?
To you Lydia Cross,(I hope you have learned your lesson) and all the others that are spreading these lies, shame, shame on you also. This kind of behavior is what put the word dirty in politics.

I will not post the lie on this blog because I would be spreading it also.

I told her that I am willing to tell who told me the story because I believe the lie was made up to help one candidate and hurt another the week of early voting. I was at the bean rally because I planned to vote for Janet but when the lady helping her told me the story it made me decide not to vote for Vanzant because I think she is behind the whole thing. I think people who tell lies should be held accountable. I think the ones who repeat them and gossip about them are lower than a snake's belly and we have got a lot of snakes crawling around.

2—The lie you started at the supper and nursing home and how many people you encouraged to go out into the community and repeat it to sway the early voting.

3—The so called “voting ticket” you have now circulating inside Intermet to harm your opponent with the names you want people to vote for. With your name at the top of the list along with the likes of Billy Beets how many of these people will stand by you in court?

I would simply like for the people of Giles County to stop and think. Use logic, reasoning, and good common sense in making decisions. Yes, there are wonderful people running for office; as there are some not so wonderful people. I attended the candidate speeches at the High School sponsored by the Demo. Women. At this meeting I sat listening to some in admiration and others shaking my head. Mr. Barrett, this one goes out to you. I sat there... with fingers in my ears because you were yelling at the audience most of the time... trying to hear what you were saying. You spout off facts but in actuallity they are not and some people aren't on the inside to know that what you say seems to be completely factual and totally upfront but it isn't. Your wishy washiness confuses me. One moment you said you supported teachers and every aspect of being a teacher. However in the next breath you asked why teachers were sent to Tampa and why the county paid for such. First of all they weren't sent to Tampa, it was Orlando and the conference was to listen to other "model schools" from the nation as a whole to get ideas on improving our system. You say you are for professional development but griped about that one. Next you made a comment on how cool the auditorium was. Come on! Does nothing please you? You hinted at the fact that the air should be turned so that it shouldn't kick on as often to save money. My goodness! What you fail to realize is how many teachers are sweating their rears off in the summers working in their classes because the air is controlled at Central Office and they do turn it off after hours. Exception being high school because it does host events such as that. I'm sure if you would've been sweating you would've mentioned that as well. Just please make your facts are facts and stop yelling at us. We are perfectly capable of hearing but not everything needs to be such a negative remark. Learn to look at the positives in a situation. Like I said, you do make some good points and raise some good questions and for that I commend you. But don't mislead others in the process. I am glad you are enthused about politics and want to be involved but do so in a manner that will bring honor to the county and people, not embarrassment at all the mud-throwing that goes on.

The voting "ticket" that is circulating is a hoot! Hear that JC and GT are some behind it. What I think is a hoot is that they marked Vanzant when she actually worked behind the scenese for the land management plan. Did you know that fellows? Then they marked Gibbons. Why? What position did the register of deeds take on zoning that curried your favor gentlemen? The real scream was for judge "Lee or Flacy". Is that because ya'll are old and Lee is old because it can't be because he is the best choice for the judge. Naming Flacy I figure was a bone thrown in for her commissioner mother since she votes with ya'll. I think your "ticket" will actually cost people listed some votes and "the ticket" will probably have about as much effect as an enema has a year after it is excreted!

This "ticket" is being pushed as the candidates to vote for if you are against zoning. I wonder how Kay Gibbons got their endorsement. I have not heard her mention zoning in any speech or remarks she had made anywhere I have been. Sandy Ralston was not contacted for her views by anyone connected with this group. What criteria was used to arrive at this endorsement. The Register of Deeds is not a policy-making position. It enacts no laws, regulations, or ordinances. This is simply a chance for someone to slip in a fast one. One leader of this group that I talked to today said he didn't know the Register of Deeds was even on the list of "approved" candidates. I believe the writers of this "ticket" were promoting their own personal choice when they endorsed Kay Gibbons.
You can vote for anyone you chose, just don't be duped into voting for someone for the wrong reasons.

The reason Kay Gibbons name is on the list is she is backing Janet Vanzant 100% and Vanzant wants only people in office that will bow and say yes Janet. Just drive all over the county and you will see a Vanzant sign and Gibbon’s side by side and the observation hasn’t been lost on people. If you attended the Democratic Women’s rally and watched her husband sneaking Janet a thumbs up after she gave a written speech you wouldn’t have any doubts. This is so sad for Kay because I think she is a nice person but her ties to Janet is really hurting her chances.
She has tried to ride the fence in public, but can’t seem to completely stay on it when Janet is involved. What a shame!
Also, the reason the “ticket” was placed on the cars at Intermet was to try to do damage to Mr. Gordon because he has a strong base at Intermet.
Last night I was dining with 12 women and the discussion about the election and the list. Seven of the women had planned to vote for Kay, but changed their minds after yesterday’s events. What a shame!

It is my understanding there may be a lawsuit filed against the writers of the “ticket”

Why am I not surprised the reply was a bit on the snide side Mr. Barrett. What will you do when other commissoners don't agree with you and you realize that your hands are tied on issues more than you care to admit. You try to intimidate others with your "knowledge" and to be quite honest I grow weary of it. It's much easier to stand in the sidelines and tell others what to do than to actually walk the line. Tell the boss about the AC teachers... bite the hand that feeds you! Yeah right. Learn to pick battles Mr. Barrett. That is what adults do. Not constantly get in the face of every situation that doesn't please his almighty self. Rose colored glasses I doubt it. It's called being respectful and giving credit where credit is due. I have heard you speak on several accounts, the auditorium was simply one instance. Every time I sigh when you are allowed because to be quite honest you do not know when to stop the soap box. You want to use other people's time to make sure your point is driven home. It has been driven and driven and driven and should be a commercial for Energizer by now because it just keeps going. You are not always a victim but you play the card well in public. Pity party anyone??

I was at the bean supper and didn't hear any "lies". It was so loud and so much activity that you could barley hear the person speaking right next to you.(by the way all that noise was generated by all those people great turnout Go Janet!!)What are you people talking about. You only refer to "those lies" and never say what they are or what they concern...sounds like you don't know what you are talking about...anyone can make up crap and write it down. Your accusations hold no water if you can't confirm them much less state them.

The reason most people won’t post the lie because they don’t want to be guilty of spreading it and they have more respect of the victims. The event did happen and legal action is underway

RESPECT....it doesn't seem to bother you to slam someone without proof or even stating what your demonizing her for. If something really was said I'm sure one of you vampires would have no problem spreading it all over this blog. Guess your just stalling and confirring with others to come up with a good lie before Aug. 3rd.

The supposed, "VICTIMS" are digging themselves right into a hole by accusing people of things that are not only untrue but, without a doubt unproven. The supposed, “VICTIMS” are subjecting themselves to legal action being taken against them for not having their information correct. Like many have commented, where is the proof? Don't say in order to see such proof, "WE, THE CITIZENS", should be in attendance in court to hear the lawsuit. Your credibility is on the line here, and a letter and fictitious witnesses is not such proof that the supposed, “LIE” was started and spread. I keep hearing that it is all a lie. Well, if so, why can't the lie be published on here when it was distributed throughout the courthouse and Meadowbrook Nursing Home? I have seen many comments to that effect. Surely, the supposed, "VICTIMS" aren't under the assumption that the information contained in the letter would be confined to those two locations. I mean, this is Giles County word gets around! Also, why do the supposed. "Victims" feel it is necessary to disclose this information to only those two locations? Atleast, the only two we have heard of. What was the purpose of the letter? Just an observation from the information that I have, but it seems to me that this could have been handled in a more dignified manner. I question the fact that had this supposed, "LIE" circulated any other time, would it have had the same impact on the supposed, "VICTMS", causing the out lash and rush to defend themselves. I haven't heard Mrs. Vanzant taking such drastic measures. Perhaps, she has more faith in the citizens of Giles County that she doesn't have to defend herself in such a manner. Is it that the supposed, "VICTIMS" feel their credibility would not withstand this supposed, "LIE"?
I will say this much. I think it is unfortunate that the supposed, "VICTIMS" are promoting the Glenn Gordon campaign. I feel like Mr. Gordon will be impacted at the polls because of the MANNER in which the supposed, "Victims" handled this matter considering the supposed, “VICTIMS” support Mr. Gordon. I certainly hope not! I am sad that this has happened. Regardless of whether or not there is any merit to the supposed, "LIE" the attempt to ascertain the truth has been handled in a very juvenile and unprofessional manner. I believe this is a strong armed attempt deceive the people of Giles County for the benefit of the supposed, “Victims”. I know politics gets dirty and people attempt to sling mud, but this has hit an all time low. The way I see it is this. The election will be over soon and everyone will resume their lives. We will never know because of all of this which candidate won fair and square. I see this as a desperate attempt to sway and influence voters.

Good Luck, Mr. Gordon, Mrs. Vanzant, may the best person

Dear Imposter - Courthouse Insider 2:

You need to find yourself another name. I am the blogger who used this name first and you are a fake!

You must work in some other courthouse than Giles County. The folks you call "victims" came into our office (and all the others I hear) and gave us a copy of the anonymous letter and a two page letter stating that it was a lie. Now, the first question I asked myself is why someone would tell such a lie and my answer to myself was for personal gain. If you have any sense at all you can see that Janet is scared that the election is too close. She or some person on her behalf is trying to get some sympathy votes or pity votes.

Then I wondered why she'd use tht. I know that Mr. and Mrs. Gordon have a special son too. But they haven't expected any special treatment in the community as far as I have known. They could use that in this election but as far as I've heard they haven't.

I also don't think the "victims" would come face all of us and call it a lie unless they could prove it. I was gossiping about it with a lady from my church. She was present when Janet says the incident was supposed to have happened. She said it wasn't true and that she'd go to any court and tell anybody that whoever told the story is lying. That's good enough for me. Her credibility wouldn't be questioned since you seem to be worried about credibility.

Then I wondered why you was so fired up over this. I figured your own job must be on the line if she loses. Is that it? Are you on the south end of the courthouse? Let me ask you this would you do anything you could to try to hang on to a fifty thousand dollar a year job and insurance for your family if your husband didn't work. You bet you would.

Everybody on my end of the courthouse with even half a brain realizes that Janet has lied on the wrong people. I'm not surprised that she told an untruth. She passes me all the time when I'm going out 64East to visit my in laws and she is hitting the interstate to head down to her house in Lincoln County. Course you may think it's okay to tell this story. I don't. Also does the elected official in your office give you free child care? Mine don't. Or are you the one who leaves work to do the child care? just a thought. Last time she didn't want people to know she was still married. The old single mother trick. We all know shes been married all along.

I disagree with you. I don't think Glen Gordon's campaign will be negatively affected. People have been waiting for years to give Janet the chance to run for Lincoln County mayor. This story somebody is circulating for her won't make a difference. Course I should tell you my aunt said she had planned to vote for Janet but after I showed her that letter she changed her mind. She voted early for Mr. Gordon.

My grandma always said if you tell a lie it will be found out. She also said the britches of people who told lies would catch on fire. If my grammie is right and you're a friend then you best go on and call the rescue squad because Janet's drawers have got to be smoldering and about to blaze.

Are you sure you work in this courthouse? We have lights on here and you shore do seem to be in the dark.

I guess you're right Mr Barrett as with everything else. You may think you have proved your point but I find it petty to argue with someone and write a 10 page thesis on every single minute detail available for the human soul to ponder. You have your opinion and I have mine. However, I will say I DO know more about politics locally, statewide etc than you will ever experience. So go ahead, make your 1,2,3, ... 9, 10, 15 points. I can't wait to see you in action if you get elected. As far as being anonymous... some people don't have the luxury of being in the open eye. For reasons beyond what you can understand I'm sure and I'm sure as well I'll get a 10 pager on why I should or shouldn't "stand up." My response is and will be go ahead. Write till your heart is content. I did think you have some good points but sometimes your mouth just runneth over and you have no clue when to just stop. Relax. No one is after you and I promise the world is not a conspiracy out for Mr. Barrett and to just say no to his ideas. I was simply trying to tell you people would listen more if you approached things in a different light.

Courhouse Insider 2 (not the original) My question is how would you handle the situation. What makes it juvenile? To call someone on their bluff?? To face them and try to work things out is not the right thing to do? All others involved were asked to meet and handle things privately. The spreaders opted not to do so. So enlighten us as to how we should handle situations like this should they ever happen to any of the rest of us.

You should have been at the courthouse the morning they showed up to speak to Vanzant. Ole Joe, her husband, came loping into the south end of the courthouse and into her office with her early that mornign. Why would she need a body guard? Last time she ran he was not to be seen. I helped the elected official in my office campaign and I never saw ole Joe Vanzant. Why? Think back. When she ran before her ads only showed her and her son. Single mother trick. She acted like she didn't have a husband then. Now she is trying the pity trick. Trying to say somebody said something awful about her son. The real shame is the way SHE USES HIM to her advantage. I wouldn't trust the woman as far as I can see her and I see her every day.

By the way her radio ad is saying she can't campaign because she has to be in the office. She and Jane Jones leave every day and go campaigning on your tax dollar. As Paul Harvey says. Now you know the whole story!

2nd District Commissioner's Announcement

William Terry Hughes
1963 Hidden Hills RD
Pulaski, TN 38478
email: vols1973@dotspot.net
phone: 363.4307

I, William Terry Hughes, would like to formally announce my intentions as a candidate for 2nd District Commissioner of Giles County in the upcoming election to be held in August of 2006. If you vote at the Airport or Minor Hill you live in the 2nd district. I reside in Hidden Hills Subdivision located off the Minor Hill Highway in the Flat Rock community. I have been a resident of Giles County all my life except for time spent in the Armed Services and while completing my education at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. My father was the late Lt. Robert B. Hughes, retiree of the Pulaski Police Department. My mother is Mabel Bragg Hughes who is a retiree of Lee Mar Shirt factory and lives in Richland Homes, Pulaski. I retired in May of 2005 from a wonderful teaching career in the Giles County School System.

I sincerely request that all eligible residents of Giles County register to vote, go to the polls, and select the candidate of your choice. Voting is a right paid for by all veterans and afforded to each U.S. citizen. I firmly believe in the rights of all individuals...and above all the laws of the land. In making my decision to run for office I want the voters to know I have no hidden agendas or any axes to grind with any person(s), group(s), or organization(s). I simply want to do what is right, fair, and honest in representing the voters of my district. I strongly feel all of us need to work in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner for the good, what is best, and economically affordable for ALL Giles Countians. The Commission should be united as one and work in unison with the County Executive whoever that might be after the election. Every Commissioner should respect his fellow Commissioner and be attentive while business is being conducted on the floor.

I do believe in giving the taxpayers a good return on their hard earned money. I am not for raising taxes unless the State mandates a program causing an increase of funds not covered in the budget. I believe in quality and safe roads in ALL parts of the County. The roads should be well maintained and the Department operated in the most "cost" efficient manner possible. Education is a must, however, we must operate within what the tax base of Giles County can afford---not like other Counties who have a larger tax base than ours. We must operate within our means. Law enforcement is paramount and every Giles County Citizen should feel safe in any sector of the County, irregardless of where they are or what are their intentions. We must find new resources and jobs for ALL age groups, ECONOMIC status, or EDUCATIONAL level. I would like to see our young people have the opportunity to work, stay, and live in Giles County. I will do my best to be an honest, fair, and above all accessible Commissioner once elected by the registered voters of the 2nd District. Thank you, and I hope everyone gets out and votes...That is the key to a successful and viable Government.

Respectfully submitted on 21 July 06,

William Terry Hughes

PS: Feel free to contact me by email or phone to make an appointment...I will travel to speak any place in the 2nd District, any time night or day.

Hey gang, let's all welcome Terry Hughes to the blog!

I'm pleased to see him post here, because I spent nearly an hour talking to him on the phone last night. And I found him to be a very genuine man, who would make an excellent County Commissioner. Mr. Hughes is very much in favor of low taxes and allowing the public to vote on important issues, such as zoning.

If I lived in the Second District, I'd certainly cast a vote for him. Alas, the best I can do is wish him well, and keep my fingers crossed. But I'd bet he will win a seat. If he comes across in real life half as well as he does over the phone, he should be a "shoo-in."

I am from the Bodenham community and spent most of my school years at Bodenham. Mrs. Jane Parker was one of my teachers and I just loved her as a teacher and as a person that participated in community activities. Her children were much younger than I was and I didn’t have any direct socializing with them, but I can still remember Mr. Parker sitting at the country store all students could freely go in and buy snacks etc.

When I began to hear people speak about some of the bad traits in Janet’s personality, I chose not to say anything because I had known Mrs. Parker so well. Afterwards, I would tell my husband (not from Bodenham), “I don’t believe a word of what that person just told us.” I kept defending the family as a whole probably because the community was at that time so close.
However, when Janet’s actions, comments and misdeeds became a reality with documented “facts” I was so disappointed and dishearten not only for her mother and the many residents of the great Bodenham community that had worked so hard to get Janet elected, my self included, in the last election. I know many of those good people still don’t know the depth of her misdeeds and they are going to feel so betrayed. I have to wonder how many of them heard about the “lie” Janet started to influence the early voting at the Bean Rally and thinking it to be the truth. The confrontation is recorded and I have heard it. It makes me sick for them!

After all the latest information that has come to light is just a small portions of bad things she has done and just this morning I heard one of her radio ads saying, “Since I am working in the office everyday, it has been impossible to see many of the voters of Giles County.” That is an insult to the intelligence of the county’s citizens because everyone knows she and Jane, a paid employee, have been out going door to door during the whole campaign!!! I just can’t understand her thinking.

Another sad, sad thing is the strong possibility Kay Gibbons may lose the election this year due to her loyalty to Janet. For months, many people have commented about the manner, placement, and timing of Kay’s signs connected to Janet’s. I would like to hear Kay address the situation on the radio, but I don’t think she can.

Joan Townsend is another victim by her recent endorsement of Janet publicly and she had to know the truth!

These are very sad days and it has been a sad four years in the history of Giles County with the lack of honest leadership of Janet Parker Vanzant.

Mrs. Parker I am so sorry for you and your family and it comes from my loving Bodenham Heart. I wish Janet had the courage to with draw from the election before it gets even more difficult and embarrassing for all of us.

I, too, want to say I am in agreement with Kendrick on his comments about William Terry Hughes for commissioner in the second district. I live in that district and I will definitely vote for him because he is honest, straitforth, and will be a representative for all the people in district two. He does a lot for kids in Hunter Safety Education, ring master of the Minor Hill Horse Show, and other charitable events. I know that he would chaperone kids at the Veteran's Day Ceremonies on the square each November and he is a veteran of the United States Air Force. In talking with him you could tell he wanted to impress on the kids a sense of pride for our country and the brave men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice for our freedom of today. I hope the voters in my district, two, see fit to vote for him just like I did.

I too, must agree with Kendrick and anonymous directly above. I have known Mr. Hughes for most of my life. I would like to point out another commissioner candidate, who Mr. McPeters has made mention of. Tommy Pollard is a candidate in the 5th district. My husband and I noticed even in his first newspaper article that Mr. Pollard spoke of the many Veterans in our county who we owe so much thanks to. As Mr. Pollard said in the numerous speaches he has given at the varios rallies we have attended, the veterans have sacrificed so much to give us the oppertunity to vote. As my husband recalls, Mr. Pollard said, "if you chose not to exercise your right to vote, then you lose your right to gripe". He too has stated to us his cooncern for the children in Giles County. The majority of them feel that they must seek jobs and relocate to other places when they complete their education, for there is nothing here for them. With new faces such Hughes and Pollard working together, Giles County will surely become a thriving community once more and our children will be given the chance to raise their children in a safe and stable environment-a place they can once again be proud to call their home.

I am voting for Mr. Hughes. He devoted his life to teaching kids. Not only that he is a Veteran...I have seen him in the dead of winter working in the cold with other Veterans collecting money for Big Brothers. He helped fill the Christmas Boxes and deliver them to the needed so they could have a decent meal for Christmas. I went to the Red Carpet Horse Show and watched him work as RingMaster. Good man, good citizen, and I believe he will do a good job as a Commissioner in the 2nd district. All of my family is supporting him.

PLEASE JANET SHUT UP PLEASE!
You and some of the other people you have working are killing you.
David Hargrove, Rooster Stanford, the Barnickle’s, Julie, Jane, Charlie, Joe and you are costing you this election and making all of us at Bodenham look bad. I just hope the public doesn’t think we at Bodenham are that low class.
Mother has sat on her front porch and watched Mr. Barnicle while cut the grass on the road, raise the mower to go over a candidate’s sign the lower it to cut Mr. Gordon’s sign down then raise it back up to go over your sign. Janet don’t you understand how that makes you look? Sometimes I just want to shake some sense into you. My God, don’t you get.
We have done all we can for you and you choose some of the lowest to help you and make all of us look bad.
To the public “I apologize.”

The public does not want or need your apology. The only people who make Bodenham look bad are people like you who make stuff up and exhibit bad manners to try to make a nice woman look bad. So thanks but no thanks for the apology. Also, please don't assume you speak for everyone in Bodenham. As a Bodenham resident I don't want people to think you are speaking for everyone.

Everyone needs to speak out about how devious janet can be. She will have to answer to the powers that be for using her handicap son to try and win a race. You don't hear or see any ill behaviors from Mr. Gordon. If you only knew the right Senior Citizens that would speak out you would know that she tried every way in the world to hide and deceive at the Senior Citizens. Janet is right in there with George Bush. He hides among children and nursing homes, Janet hides behind elderly citizens and handicap children. She knew just what she was doing when she told Lydia Cross to start the rumor. Lydia is great at stirring. And Chris Morris was another patsy that fell for her pathetic lie. Janet did say those things and it can easily be proven. I only hope it is done by Aug. 3

You left out a name that is going around town bad mouthing Mr. Gordon and that is Jimmy Mooney. He is still mad because Mr. Gordon wouldn’t give him a job at Intermet and according to him, Janet and her camp are planning another rumor to be spread.

This information was given to Butch White and they are ready and waiting for her if she attempts anything like she did to effect early voting. One difference in theirs and hers, theirs is the truth and have all the ammunition to prove it. She won’t be happy!

You also forgot to say that Jimmy Mooney supported her before because she had promised him a job. He still hopes to be in charge of financial management team. I think Jimmy is smart enough not to get involved in something that will bring shame to his children or get him in court with his background. Only time will tell.
