E-mail topic: Should Commissioner Pay Be Raised?

A reader says via emal: At the June 19th Commissioners meeting County Commissioner Jeff Hatfield has indicated his intent to introduce a motion to set a regular monthly stipend for commissioners of $200 per month (12 months per yr ) instead of the current $60 and $30 they are paid to attend full court or subcommittee meetings. Does this mean they get paid whether or not they attend their assigned meetings? What opinion do bloggers hold on this topic??? Have you expressed your opinion to your local commissioner(s)?

No, most of the time part of the commissioners can't find the time to be at the meetings they are suppose to be at. We should not reward them for shirking their duties.

If we pay what they're worth, some would get rich & a few would starve. Probably should pay based on attendance at $60 regardless of type meeting. It's an honorable thing to do - not about $$$. dm

You don't get paid if you don't attend the meetings.

Why do they get paid? Why not volunteer their time as a public service? There are many people who volunteer their time with no reward other than doing what is right for their neighbors. Commissioner pay might be tied to that paid to those county volunteers who sacrifice their time to energy save lives and property.

Responding to Anonymous of June 14, 10:31 - Currently commissioners don't get paid if they miss a meeting but what Hatfield is proposing is a flat rate of $200 per month regardless of attending meetings or not. Now this would give them a LARGE raise - $2400 per year - whereas most commissioners now rake in anything from around $800 - $1200 annually. Isn't this strange particularly in light of Hatfield not running this time.

They ought to use the difference and pay a stipend to the people who are involved in the Rescue Squad.

To WAB:
Problem is it will probably be voted on in July since it is coming from Hatfield and he'll be gone end of August. Look for the vote on reducing down number of commissioners also since this is a Hatfield sponsored idea.

Raise the pay for being a commissioner? Ridiculous. Why don't we treat them like we do school teachers and their salaries. Teachers get paid very little for teaching. Most think teachers should teach for nothing just because they "love" kids. Why don't commissioners govern because they love the voters?
