Obviously didn't like it but they couldn't do anything about it. Caused Vanzant to finally reveal the correct figures on what has been spent so far on H/S. (Half of what Wendall Wilburn has been touting to influence votes for doing away with the building).

But what a laugh. Am I wrong? It sounded like Property Chair Wendall Wilburn forgot his notes and the meeting was adjourned about 3 minutes after being called to order! Then it sounded as if a woman asked him about the bidding process and he agreed it must be done which is not what he was quoted as supporting in local paper.
FINALLY…we can hear and see exactly what takes place in these county meetings, but I want to know how you will go about recording the secret meetings they hold.
So Wendell Wilburn is the next one who must be scrutinized and no doubt investigated. Surely the group can dig up something. Shame on you!

Thanks to Commissioner Terry Harwell for presenting the questions about expenditures and such. It's about time somebody started asking questions and wanting correct answers. All the information going around on HS building was half truths or less.

looks like the savings from building a judicial center at or near the jail would cover most if not all of the cost of the building and solve overcrowding at the courthouse, as well as parking problems.

Neither I nor Mr. Barrett have any plans to "scrutinize" or "investigate" Mr. Wilburn. OTOH, he is a public official, so that would make him fair game for that, don't you think?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If "the group" you speak of is Mr. Barrett and myself, then I can assure you that Mr. Wilburn is not someone we are interested in... at least any moreso than any other commissioner. We have no intent to look for and publicize insignificant faults, as we are aware that no-one is perfect. Note that the claims that have been made regarding Vanzant and Jackson are not dealing with "small potato" issues.

Yes he did and that is why Mr. Cagle is not laid up in the hospital at this moment. Trust me, there was a time when Mr.Barrett would have laid someone out for jabbing him in the chest. The Mr. Barrett we know now is a much smarter person and for that I am very proud. Thank you Mr. Barrett.

I prefer that we move forward together,if one or two Board members are not ready to support an issue, I prefer to work toward a consensus before we place it on the agenda for a vote. That is why I often request that if you have questions or concerns please contact me before teh meeting. That way we can discuss the issue further and either leave it on the agenda or can be removed from the agenda for further review. This is how we can avoid a split vote like 6-1, 5-2, or 4-3. There is enought stress in the world without causing any additional stress.
I appreciate the work of, and personal sacrifice made by each Board member. I know that your time is valuable. I am grateful when you share it with me, our students and our employees. I hope you will never underestimate the influence that you have on our daily operation.
Harmony among the members of the Board and the Director of Schools is very important if we are to accomplish our goals. The students, imployees and citizens of Giles County benefit when we work together like a fine tuned engine. A lack of harmony and /or unity shown between the Board members or by jor toward the Director of Schools has a very negative effective on teh students, employees, and citizens that we serve.
It is imperative to have a clear chain of command.
Also a point of interest: The group spread false information by work of mouth, in Letters to the Editor, and through local internet sites. Some of the common lies were things like: The school board had two citizens arrested and taht the Director of Schools does not live in Giles County. Doxens of lies an dhalf truths have been printed. Thes types of letters and misnformation are likely to become more prevalent during the months when the Direcator's evaluation is due or while the budget is being developed and discussed.
God help us all.
How is not having a Pre K program moving forward? Especially since there are grants for it.

Giles County has applied for the Pre-K. I don't know how this got started but there are plans in the works for pre-k. One of Nashville's TV stations was here a couple of weeks ago and interviewed Jackson and a couple of local teachers. One more untruth going around! Get the facts before opening your mouth.
Glad the Pre K plans are in the works. But, what does a T V station have to do with it? Are you sure they were not here for The Leave it to Norman and Cagle Show?
The PreK program is just about the biggest most expensive "daycare" program that has ever been hoisted on the back of citizens. Administrators, unions and ambitious politicians are pushing this thing without one credible study to show any lasting benefits for children in PreK programs. This is nothing less than big government taking away more of our free choices. With this program like with other school grades you will have no choice in whether your child attends a good school or a mediocre or even a terrible school. At least at this time parents have a say in where their children attend PreK or Kindergarten. Those who choose may send their children to such places as Growing Tree, TNT or even the friend or family member who has a loving relationship already established with the child. This program will take away that choice.
PreK is for the most part an expansion of the Head Start program, about the only difference will be the huge increase in the cost.
Instead of looking to increase the number of people under their control the school system would do well to pay more attention to the needs of teachers and students already in the system. It does not require an expensive government study to understand that teachers and students are suffering right now and adding PreK to the mix will only redirect much needed resources away from current teachers and students.

This Pre-K thing really ticks me off! Low income people who pop out baby after baby are getting free babysitting with breakfast, lunch, and a SNACK provided --- not to mention that the teacher has a full-time assistant!!
If the child lives with parents who can't physically, emotionally, or financially care for the child, it won't make a doo-doo in the years to follow.
