Mr. Barrett,
Is there something evil or illegal going on with this? Do you blame the county mayor and/or the commissioners?

Why does there have to be something evil or illegal about a thing in order for it to be news?
In keeping with the idea that this blog is the earliest provider of information of any media in the area, I posted this item of news. Sorry if it ruptured your cocoon.

Mr. Barrett, you can't win. People are going to make snide comments about everything that is said on this blog; If that's what they need to feel superior, I wouldn't dignify it with a response. Anybody that can READ, could see that you were just reporting a fact; There will always be smart-alecks, I don't always agree with you, but in this case it was so obvious that all you were only stating a fact, in case someone missed the news....

122 & 240 What petty little pieces of dung we see. Wrapped up & warped by your two bit scam, you can't even imagine what's happened in this country, or Giles County!

One thing about it, Mr. Wheel Tax is running flat & can do little but make a fool of himself until he's re-tired to the bleachers.

Reminds me ... How did you turn a $100,000 set of bleachers into a $6 million boondoggle? A stone tied around the neck of Pulaski, the county, and local businesses of which, some will be eased out. You are busy attracting business???

As dung rots, little flowers sprout and grow.

People.....Mr. Barrett was only stating a fact. What we need to be concerned with is the fact that Giles County is going to be 105 jobs short. I used to work at Intermet. There are people who have worked there for the entire 19years it has been opened. There is at least still 1 married couple working there. BOTH of them are losing their jobs and they have a family. There is one lady there especially who have given her heart and soul to that place. SHe dont everything there is to do there. All of the people who work there, work very hard. You cant work there and not. It is a very physical place to work. So, the main concern here is not who is blowing the whistle on a plant closing, it is the concern and worry of the people who have families, mortgages, kids to send to college...etc. who arent going to have jobs. Thanks Mr. Barrett.

My questions remains: will you blame the county mayor or the commissioners for the demise of intermet, which is a privately-owned business?

146 why don't you grow up and stop being such a little snit. The place closed because they didn't get a planned contract. Mr. Barrett is doing something positive here and all you can do is take cheap shots at everything he tries to do.

The majority of these comments are ridiculous even by Giles County standards...as I said in the 4:20 comment, anybody that can read could see that Mr. Barrett was only reporting a bit of news, that's it, nothing more, nothing less; kinda like saying "it rained last night." He never implied or insuated anything else; Then the two commentators start talking about flowers and dung and then others start slinging mud and being smart alecks...so you don't like Mr. Barret; so what, he only stated a fact; grow up if you are gonna post on a grown up blog; he didn't ask a question or state an opinion. No wonder this blog has no credibility....the posters that are so insecure that they have to start off by calling someone that dares disagree with them "dumbo" and other such nonsense want to convince citizens that they have better ideas????? I don't always agree with Mr. Barrett, in fact I rarely agree with him, but the facts are he isn't afraid to sign his name to what he writes, which is more than I can say for myself and most others, and in this case, all he did was report a fact. I seldom get to listen to the local news, I appreciate being informed.
And the "dumbo" as well as "da secretary" and other asinine name calling...I really can't think of anyone over 3 years old that would be impressed with anything that was said by someone that resorted to that type of opening statement. But as I said in my original post, if that's what it takes to make you feel smug, go for it.

You're right. We can't blame the mayor for Intermet closing. Intermet is owned by a large corporation. As you most probably know, corporations like that don't give a minutes thought to eliminating jobs. It's all about money for them. But what we can blame the mayor for is the lack of jobs in this town for the 100+ employees to apply for. Most of the employees there have worked there 15+ years. During those 15 years these "soon to be unemployed" workers have spent their HARD EARNED MONEY in this town. They have supported this town. Now they need a little support and - GUESS WHAT - they are going to have to go to work out of town, or MOVE out of the town to get a job. NOW THAT YOU CAN BLAME ON MAYOR DAN. Or should we use his other title for that line??? One thing is for sure. At this rate he will get his wish and this will be a retirement town. THIS TOWN NEEDS INDUSTRY. THIS TOWN NEEDS HELP. THIS TOWN NEEDS A MAYOR THAT WANTS THE CITIZENS TO LIVE THEIR LIFE HERE AND BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES. Soooo. What do you think about that?

If you haven't already heard, most of industry is going to where it is less expensive to manufacture. I guess we need someone to blame.

You are correct. But in case you havent read the survey results in industry related magazines, the southeastern part of the US (which would include TN) is one of least expensive places for manufacturing. Pay scales are considerably lower than states in other regions. There are fewer unions, which can increase costs. BUT - if you don't have people in place TRYING to bring jobs to the town this doesn't matter.

I am January 9th 8:49 am poster-To the above listed poster-Thank you for calling me compassionate-I appreciate that. Some might argue the wisdom part-LOL but thank you for that too. My parents have always told me I wear my heart on my sleeve. Having worked at Intermet, I just know how hard the work is, how much the workers put into their jobs and my main concern is the people that work there. I cant do anything personally for them but I can give them my prayers. Having a child in college myself right now, I cant even imagine what they are going through. Especially with knowing ,most of them have mortgages, light bills, car insurance etc. Not only are they going to be out of jobs, their health, dental and vision insurance will be gone. Bless their hearts. I hope everyone reading this will put aside the concerns of who blew what whistle (even though Mr. Barrett did nothing wrong-He just stated a fact)and remember all of the employees and their families in their daily and nightly prayers. It is a very sad situation...for everyone involved..the employees, their families and our community.

And let's don't forget that I bet our commissioners will be sure to try and pass the proposed tax increase anyway in light of Intermet closing. Increase water rates, increased sewer rates, increased sales taxes, proposed wheel tax, what else can they sqeeze out of us? Let's get these jokes out of office!

I agree that the citizens of Giles COunty cant handle anymore taxes and I dont see any sense in spending the enourmous amt on Sam Davis Park when it has been shown that we can fix it....cheaper. Maybe not to some peoples standards. But it can be fixed. Yes, it is a nice stadium and yes, I have been to some horrible ones when Sam Davis looked like the Taj Mahal compared them BUT the citizens of GC just cant take anymore. We have people losing jobs here...very soon. I hope everyone votes to keep Loretta Garner in her position. It seems like she is doing a great job. She is a very honest woman and I have no doubt she is going to do what is right. As far as Mr. Barrett, he only stated a fact..nothing more..nothing less. Think about these people who are losing their jobs instead of bashing someone who only stated fact. What is wrong with that???

Why would Loretta lose her job? Someone has to do the job that Judy was doing. I think it will take someone with the kind of knowledge that she has just to do a county budget without the other departments. She is doing a good job. She is keeping expense down by buying used furniture at great prices. She has done her best to keep down the cost at the bank building. I am voting against the Financial Mangement but I would still like to see Loretta has head of the county finances.

There is no way you can justify keeping Mrs Garner at her salary and doing the job of a simple book keeper. Clean up the whole mess and vote to keep the financial manangement act

Monday, January 14, 2008 10:50:00 PM

Why is managing the finanaces of an entire county simple bookkeeping? I really don't think that it is simple. Judy's salary was not that far from Loretta's. Keep a CPA in there and the county will be better off and the audit will too.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 6:29:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone who would vote to repeal the financial management act is either a crook or a complete idiot!

Letting the school board and TJ continue cooking the books and spending like drunk sailors on their first leave in forty years, and this county will be broke. Half the county taxpayers will be taxed off their property! No business will be left.

Add up all the stupid UNnecessary tax increase demands in the last four years and you will be ready to tar and feather TJ, his termite army, and Mr. Wheel Tax

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 8:21:00 PM

What Judy did was simply try and keep track of what was spent and what was left. The commissioners budget committee did all the approving of budgets then let each dept. run wild in their own individual ways. With Financial Management in place the director has better control from the time the budget committee approves the budgets until the next approved budget is made.
That is the reason so many in powerful positions are fighting to scrap the Act. They could care less about what it cost or what has already been spent as long as their power is protected.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 11:15:00 PM

I think Judy did a lot more than that. If not she was overpaid and I don't think she was. I believe there is a lot more to it than you think. No bookkeeping job is that simple.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 6:26:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Didn't say her job was simple or that she didn't do her job only that the limitations she was under were far greater than the CPA who is now financial management director.

Did anyone notice how Intermet's Closing just got a small space on the front page of the newspaper and the little industry that is hiring 10 people gets headlines.Yea, 10 people and they probable will be brought in from somewhere else.
Is Dan Speer doing any good? I don't know of anything big that he's done since he's become Economic Development Director. Now if it's for the City of Pulaski, well he might do someting but for all the rest what has he accomplished? O yea, I almost forgot he did (almost) manage to give our County's most valuable resource away free to a bottling company but then ended up getting a committment from this very same company to BUY water from guess who, the City of Pulaski! How can he get by with being Mayor of Pulaski and the Economic Direcor, Talking about a conflict of interest. Shouldn't the county look into not paying 1/2 of his salary. He's hasn't done anything that Janet Vanzant couldn't do and we could save money for his salary and all the meals that he feeds his committee every month. What does everyone else think?

Unfortunatly closing of business and industry is a trend right now. We need someone new in the White House that will do something about business going overseas. We also need to be more conscious of buying American made. If we don't save our jobs from going to other countries we will soon be a third world country ourselves. We cannont always buy American made because they aren't always available like in electronics, but we can buy when available. Just like tennis shoes, buy New Balance they are made in America. We have to do our part not just expect our government to fix the problem.

629 right on - problem is choice - there is NONE! The Clinton's started this mess & the Bushes took it to the moon & moved almost everything our forefathers left us, to CHINA and elsewhere - IT'S GONE!

The nuts that run and are running for office in the democratic party will flat out destroy this country, but what have the republicans done different? We need a Harry Truman, not an hildabeast, Osamma, McCain, or someone else who will let the masses past our borders & let the plunderers move what's left standing, somewhere else!

Now THAT should get an immediate investigation! There could be something evil and sinister going on. Perhaps the county mayor, city mayor, and the commissioners are cooking up a deal wherein they would get huge kick-backs if Wendys would locate here. It could be that Mr. Jackson is going to get a free burgers for his office staff? This must be investigated immedaately and any fraud exposed!
