Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. Public Meeting On Budget

On 7 July at 9am in the Pulaski Elementary School Auditorium there will be a public meeting about the county budget for the coming year. This is an open meeting for the public to ask questions about the county budget held in accordance with the Financial Management Act mandate.
There have been some questionable restrictions placed on those wishing to speak at this meeting; hopefully they will be resolved before the meeting.
Presently as planned anyone wishing to speak at the public hearing must give five days written notice to the Financial Management Director, Loretta Garner, of those intentions.
Mrs. Garner's office is on the 2nd floor in the Courthouse Annex.
Those requesting to speak will be granted three minutes to share their views on the budget and ask questions.
I urge everyone to attend this meeting, the first of its kind. Notify Mrs. Garner you wish to speak and present your questions about the budget which should be printed in the local paper several days prior to the meeting. Allen Barrett

1) 9 am 7-7-2008 eliminates anybody who works

2) Does anybody know whats in the budget? Has the school mess been cleaned up?

3) If nobody knows what to ask - then, everybody will be just like the ones wh0 work

The budget must be published in the local paper ten days before the meeting.
The proposed school budget for 2008-2009 is scheduled to be discussed in the budget committee on Monday 30 June right after the called commission meeting. The Budget committee will meet in the basement of the courthouse annex. (Suntrust Bldg). It too is scheduled to provide the least attendance and participation. Allen Barrett

Mr Barrett
Thanks for making this meeting and right to speak about budget to our attention. If it wasnt for you we would not have known we could do this. Most of us are working but we should call our friends who might be able to attend and ask them to make the effort. Must be many questions people would like to ask after all the previous years of being in the dark. Maybe we will know why we have so many new employees on the payroll at high rates of pay when many of us are still making only $8 an hr with no benefits.

These new restrictions are just another way to keep the general public from being informed. What are they afraid of? If they were truly interested in the betterment of our county, they would be glad to get any imput that might help them. On second thought,do you think the majority of the board members think they are smarter than ANYONE ELSE IN GILES COUNTY. If they board realy wanted to help the county, they would band together and fire Jackson. If he is fired he would not be able to retaliate against family members. BOARD MEMBERS GET SOME BACKBONE FOR YOUR GRANDCHILDRENS FUTURE.

I fully endorse the comments of 2 July 8:38 regarding the public meeting on the budget. Several in leadership positions simply do not want the public involved with how they spend our money. Having this meeting at 9 am and most all other meetings at a time when most citizens can not attend speaks volumes about the desire to have public input. I hope the office is flooded with request to speak and statements about the unjustified time limit. Allen Barrett

Firing Jackson means paying him off for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Do we tolerate or pay off?

New board members, new board chair and new negotiations team may make a difference.

If we had new board and board chair, wouldn't need new negotiations team...they only say what Jackson allows them to say. Wouldn't have to buy out Jackson's contract if he was found in violation of terms...food for thought!

If he's breaking some law, turn in your evidence.
