Too Many School Supervisors Or Not Enough?

At the School Board Meeting held on 12 June 2008 I stated to the Board that the number of administrators in the school system was outrageous, then compared our school system with the Murfreesboro City School system, they have far more students with fewer administrators than we have. Mr. Jackson told me he did not believe those numbers were accurate.

Here are the numbers for the Murfreesboro City School System which only instructs students from Pre-K thru 6th grade.

Twelve (12) Schools; 7,200 Students; Fifteen (15) Supervisors including the Director.
One (1) Supervisor for each 413.3 Students.

Giles County School System: Eight (8) Schools; 4,325 Students; Twenty-one (21) Supervisors including the Director, but not counting the Leaps & Bounds and Pre-K directors. One (1) Supervisor for each 205.9 Students.

One of the closest counties to Giles in terms of students is Coffee which has 8 schools, 303 Teachers, 4,433 Students and 18 Administrators.
Giles has 8 Schools, 303 Teachers, 4,325 Students and 21 Administrators.

This information came from the Tennessee Department of education and can easily be verified at their website. You can decide if there are too many supervisors or not. Allen Barrett

The principal has the most difficult position in the system. He/she has to deal with the students, parents, teachers, public and the Central Office. None of them are paid what they deserve. I should back up on that. Afew of them work their butts off, while a couple or three sit in their offices and watch the world go by. It's not hard to see/know who they are either. Ask who works and who doesn't. Takes three assistants and a head principal to run GCHS. Which one(s) work?
Some of the supervisors are extras if you ask me. There are too many and all want to be in charge of someone or something. It's about power.

Profound thoughts - WALMART's roll back philosophy. Why not roll back the bureaucracy that has invaded since TJ, & we should find more than enough to pass some raises to folks who need it!

Might even find learning is has an inverse ratio to spending!

First, administrators and supervisors are two different positions, so please don't use the terms interchangeably. Second, please name the 21 "supervisors." I've counted myself and don't count anywhere near that many. Are you counting consulting teachers and other school board employees? If so, then you are not counting accurately, because these people are not supervisors and do not receive supervisors pay. Sounds like another attempt to make things sound much different than they really are to me. I think if you check any school system in the state you will find that there are people other than supervisors who work in the central office and I bet they aren't counting those others.

Okay let's county
1. Tee Jackson
2. Debbie Braden
3. Ronnie Shirey
4. Andy Chunn
5. Pam Ogden
6. Ann Chaffin
7. Rose Brown
8. Danny Hickman
9. Bobby McMaster (when she starts)
10. Bill Davis (part time)
11. Teresa Williamson
12. Mike Watson maybe
Maybe you can count principals but if you do then I know the principals in the other places could not have been counted.
That is all I count.

The others are either teachers, assistants, secretaries, clerks or techs. Maybe I'm missing someone.

You also must recognize that Coffee County has a larger number of Spanish speaking students to deal with. Considering this I think Giles County should get by with at least six less. Especially with over a hundred less students.

I apologize for any confusion I may have caused you by using the term “supervisors” instead of “administrators”. Administrator was the proper term according to the TDOE. I do not feel that by identifying “administrators” as “supervisors” should in any way negated the entire post.
I was using the numbers from the Tennessee Department of Education and they listed those positions including the director of schools as “administrators”. Principals were not included.
The supervisors and/or administrators for this past year were the following:
Tee Jackson – Director
Debbie Braden – Asst. Director
Rose Brown - Federal Projects
Ann Chaffin – Food Service
Andy Chunn – Technology
Bill Davis – Vocational Education
Martha Ferguson – Supervisor of Instruction
Betty Ford – Instructional Technology Integration
Danny Hickman – Transportation
Barbara Jennings – Assistant Curriculum & Instruction
Mitzi Jones – Behavioral Modification
Pam Ogden – Special Educaton
Ron Shirey – Attendance/Adult Education
Beth Sigmon – Internal Auditor
Mike Watson – Maintenance
Chuck Edde – Asst. Maintenance Supervisor
Sue Whittemore – Assistant Curriculum & Instruction
Teresa Williamson – Coordinated School Health
Sherry Polly – Supervisor Leaps & Bounds
Can’t recall at this moment – Pre-Kindergarten
As I said the number of administrators listed by the state is 20. Apparently they are including the Leaps & Bounds and Pre-K programs but they do not have them listed individually as I listed them above. I hope this adds clarity to my earlier post.

There were also eight clerical staff members in the Central Office. Thanks for your involvement. Allen Barrett

Betty Ford, Mitzi Jones (Behavior Specialist - not supervisor), Chuck Edde- assistant in maintenance,Sue Whittemore, Barbara Jennings and Beth Sigmon are not supervisors. You are not correct in this one Allen. Your information as posted by the state is not correct, but rarely is it correct.

Last post your are correct except, Barbara is director of Pre-k. Polly's position has nothing to do with reg school business, money doesn't come from local funds, is just funneled through the local. Leaps is funded with unclaimed lottery money and she is not at c/o, supposed to be at SES, but reality is she is seldom found on any school property. The only people she supervises are the after school employees, which is actually a "moonlighting" job, not school system, per say. (and we all know, she is not supervising the children in her care.... but that's another topic)

It's amazing how some pick apart every little word while ignoring the whole message. Who gives a rats butt if you say supervisor or administrator or high paid flunky the truth is there are far to many people in the central office and several are a real hindrance to actual teachers instead of a support.

There used to be an old saying about more than one chicken for every pot. Somebody got it mixed up - Because pots were on sale, we now have several pots for every chicken & scads more chefs to sit on the pots till somebody who aint there finds a chicken.

They need to stop studying grasshoppers & bring an ant hill to school

4 07, It's not picking about every little word when pointing out that supervisors and administrators are not the same. You yourself made it clear that the distinction needed to be pointed out when you spoke of people in the central office. Administrators are not in the central office. Administrators are principals and assistant principals. Supervisors work at the central office. The other staff that work in the central office do not make the same pay that supervisors make. Therefore it is very important to clarify those positions in this discussion.

No, the point is that once again Barrett is wrong. I don't know who the state is counting but the numbers are wrong. Teachers are neither supervisors nor administrators and do not receive that pay. I still want Barrett to tell who the people in the numbers are. Just because a teacher works out of the classroom does not mean the supervise nor administrate.

How much plainer can Barrett make it? His June 19, 8;21 post seems pretty detailed.

Barret can make it plainer by naming administrators. Teachers, assistant maintenance, behavior modification is a teacher, Barbara Jennings is a teacher, Sue Whittemore is a teacher,Beth Sigmon is in bookkeeping. Those are the ones he named and even he could not come up with what the state had. Just because they are not in the classroom does not make them administrators. They may not fall under the teaching categorie but they are still teachers making teachers pay. Can I be any plainer?

What is the student ratio per teacher? How does Giles compare to other counties on this?

Student/teacher ratio is easy when it comes to elementary school but how do you do that when it is high school and you have so many subjects?

to 11:47 Did you not read what Barret wrote in naming those people. Do you want him to post the names of their grandparents and future grandchildren.
Is what he wrote posted on the TDOE website or not. I looked and got the same number he posted. Does the central office have 20 supervisors/administrators I don't know but that is what the TDOE web site has posted.
If they are not in the classroom what would you call them?????
Beth Sigmon isn't even a teacher whether in or out of a classroom.
The bottom line as posted before is there are simply too many in the Central Office period.

I know that all of those people at the Central Office work very hard. They are all apparently needed. There was only one person not carrying the load and they are being replaced.

I know for a fact that most of the morning in the central office is spent reading the newspapers and gossiping.

I think that could be just a little of an exaggeration. I don't see anyone anywhere taking that much time to read the paper and gossip. Did you spend the morning in the office watching?

How about a whole lot of exaggeration and no fact. I work in a school office, and we get calls from people at the central office needing information all the time in the morning and all day for that matter. You can't believe half of what you read on here. People are so jealous of those that succeed that they will make up anything to try to make them look bad. As for the person not carrying the load, that person retired and is no longer there.

7:34 & 9:11. I think you lie!! You work at the Central Office but you are on the internet at 9:11. Even if it were possible to get into the blog from the school system the internet was down this morning at the office and schools while they were doing work on it. Anybody can say they work there and some people will even believe it. Why don't you try to cause trouble some where else.

I don't think Jackie has enough years in to retire. I hope that she can be relieved of some of the stress. That is not good for anyone's health. Jackie is a Godsend for many employees. She goes way beyond her job to help everyone but that is also part of her stress level too.

If all the county gov't agencies had office workers like Jackie, they would all be welcoming to enter.

Need to downsize to the 2003-4 staff levels, etc., give everyone who is in the remaining positions a minimum raise equal to the cost of living increase (if they haven't received that much), & put the rest in the bank for a rainy day - would be more than enough to handle 2008-9 & a couple more years!

I can assure you that all of the teachers in Giles County would gladly accept a cost of living raise retro-active from 2003-04. As for down sizing staff, that would be okay too if all GCBOE employees DUTIES were down-sized back to that same year. If you do not work for or in the schools, you cannot possibly have even a remote clue as to the increased work load and the IMPOSSIBLE to meet benchmarks that have been arbitrarily mandated by the state and federal govt agencies. But I do agree with the cost of living raise whole-heartedly.
