Taylor To Contest Sheriff Results In Lawrence County

This is from the WLLX Radio web site. While there are several election results being contested across the state this one involves our neighbor county.

Taylor to contest sheriff's race
Lawrence County Sheriff Kenny Taylor filed papers in chancery court Friday afternoon challenging election results in the August 5th sheriff's race.
Taylor is contesting the results based on candidate Mike Risner's residency. Jimmy Brown won the election by 118 votes. Taylor came in second and Risner third.
Taylor contends that Risner lives in Giles County and should not have been a candidate for sheriff. Nashville's Channel 5 reported Monday that Risner signed a statement declaring an address in Ethridge as his legal residence but that Risner has actually lived on a farm in Giles County for several years. In the interview, Risner admits switching his voter registration to Lawrence County in order to run for sheriff.
The election commission will meet Monday to certify the election results. Taylor had until Friday, August 27, 2010 to ask for a recall.

Just heard where Davidson county will also certify their election today. Why did Giles county election commission certify a whole week earlier than most everyone else and earlier than usual?

That's a good question. Why don't you ask Kathy Bassham? It would be interesting to know how many other counties certified when our county did versus those who certified at a later date. But, we are bad people for questioning this. We will get labeled troublemakers, just so you know. Even though our tax dollars pay the salaries of the employees of the county, we should ask questions. Certain individuals don't think we have the right to question them. We might step on some toes, hurt some feelings or actually find out some of these employees in these local government jobs are not doing them very well.

Where there are flies, there is usually something dead...in other words something stinks in this county and in my opinion it wreaks of ineptness, corruption, greed and power. Not necessarily all of these apply to the election commission office. I think the way I want to think, you think your way. I choose not to cover up for people who do wrong or can't do their job at all. Regardless of whether they are friends or family. I suggest you grasp hold of that concept. If you think the people of this county are going to take wrong doing and/or workers who don't do their job laying down, you have another thought coming.

9:49, you are right. If people could get over their negative thoughts, maybe this county could move on & grow!

This county hasn't grown in decades. It is the non-progressives such as your self who are trying so desperately to pull the wool over citizens eyes and make it appear that those asking questions are just "troublemakers". It is too bad negative thoughts have to be entertained but, for crying out loud, where is the honesty these days? Not in this county!

Could it be the reason we got our resurts quicker is because we (Giles County) have about 1 million less people in it ???

12:34 Number of voters in county has nothing to do with it. Giles county this time certified a whole week earlier than normal. Wonder why? They are also swearing in the newly elected officals earlier. Its usually in September. Again, wonder why?

No. Just wondering why. Do you have the answer as to why all was moved forward in Giles county?

I think the answer to your question 3:42 is obvious but don't expect an honest answer. It's rare these days anything is done above board and upfront. We have too many people deceiving the citizens in order to achieve an outcome beneficial to them. But, as they say, all good things must come to end. The citizens deserve the truth, no matter how ugly it is.

Thats pretty brave of you to throw Mrs. Bassham's name out there and yet hide your own. No wonder you guys cant get a new business to come to this dead end town.

Never been accused of being chicken to say how I feel 4:16. I followed the new rules set forth when this blog was restarted. You got a problem with it take it up with Mr. Barrett or don't frequent this blog. The choice is yours. Kathy Bassham works for all taxpayers as does all county employees and elected officials. I do believe it's her office and the way it is being ran in question at this time. Trust me it isn't because of me that new business doesn't locate to our beautiful county. It's the dishonesty and will to keep us in the dark ages in my opinion. Didn't see your name at the end of your post either oh brave one. Advice to you is pick your battles carefully and try not to make a fool of yourself in the process. Have a nice day!

Battles? Big fish in small pond. My point was attack the office if you feel the need. No need to get personal if you can't take your mask off. I'd suggest nashville as a great place to move if you want to be progressive.

Mrs. Bassham's office is only under scrutiny because of the sleazeball who is creating all the problems. Anyone who knows her can vouch for her honesty and integrity. So get up off that. Thanks to allen barrett for more trouble!!!!

WAB, Is the story of a contested sheriff's race in LAWRENCE County really a relevant topic for GILES County? If you want to talk about contested races, why not start with one closer to home? Perhaps YOUR District 7 commission race that you are contesting. I think it would probably be of more interest to the people of Giles County. For those who may have missed it, here's the story from WLX radio website.

"Barrett Contests Giles' District 7 Commission Race"

Elected Giles County officials will be sworn in on Friday, August 27 except for 7th district commission winners. Friday afternoon representatives of candidate William Allen Barrett filed a challenge in Chancery Court in the 7th district commission race claiming that one of the 25 signatures on the qualifying petition of winning candidate Vicky Coleman should be disqualified because the individual no long lived in the 7th district. Circuit Judge Stella Hargrove said that none of the 7th district commission candidates could be sworn in pending a hearing by Judge Robert Jones on September 2nd. State law requires a candidate to have at least 25 eligible signatures from their district on a petition in order to run for office. Coleman won her seat with 423 votes to Barrett's 254. All other office winners will be sworn in by Judge Jim Hamilton this Friday morning at 9 at the courthouse.

While I can appreciate your wanting to rid the world of all wrong doing by "corrupt" government officials, don't you think you should take care of Giles County FIRST and then take on the world?

When anyone sends in their Qualifying papers to run for office, does the election board have to check all names on it to see if they can vote and are in the district of the person running? Just wondering.

It seems like a lot of work getting all those papers.

Before somebody gets up set this is not against Kathy. I don't know of a finer person than Kathy Bassham and know she would do nothing wrong if she could help it.

It appears to me that barrett brought up the Lawrence County situation in an attempt to justify the trouble he is causing. It's just a darned shame.
Don't think for one minute that the NAACP is watching this closely. I hope they do. This is not right. The people in District 7said loudly and clearly who they wanted, and barrett should accept it.

ok, so I dont know much about how it works. if the 7th distrcit gets a new valid signature then everyone can get on with their lives? this all seems a bit trivial. if it were a handful of votes and a much more important election i would absolutely be more interested in this.

I think the picking battles and acting foolish is a great choice of words for allen barrett. i believe the whole political system is flawed. and i love to see people stand up for justice, but this is a really silly thing to contest. if i am reading correctly, he lost by a considerable amount. im sure there are much more important issues in government he could march his cross through.

Now wait a minute folks. Dont you think that perhaps WAB posted the Lawrence county sheriff's issue because 1)Risner actually lives in Giles county and not Lawrence; and 2) WAB was trying to tell us that fraud in elections is probably rampant?
Then put yourself in WAB's shoes. If one of us had run for commissioner and found an opponent hadnt really qualified in the first place dont you think we would be hollerin if we could afford to? You cant knowingly let this sort of thing happen and do nothing about it. The law is the law. Live by it. NAACP should have nothing to do with this problem. It pertains to elections documents and has nothing to do with the persons skin color. If Campbells or Harwells qualifying papers had been found not to pass muster I have no doubt it would have been brought to the attention of the elections commission, as well it should have been.

I wonder why WKSR has run the story about the Sheriff's race in Larwenceburg? Don't they realize people here only want to know about things in Giles County?
News is news and what effects me is what i am most interested in, in fact I would like to see more national news items on this blog to be discussed.

People will stop complaining and bringing issues to the forefront when things start being done right 6:19. Why don't you ask those who continue to violate our laws and rules, why they keeping doing so? We the people are entitled to having an open, honest government. It you think the inquiries into what our local government is doing and what will be revealed is over, then stay tuned because it ain't over til it's over. You have no idea what all is going on in this town, many do not!

Stop complaining 9:41. If you don't like what the blog posts, don't read it. Common sense should tell you that.I happen to care about my neighboring counties for many reason. One I have family there and what goes on around us as a potential to affect all of us. You seem very small-minded and childish and just raring to complain about anything.

WKSR and the local paper can't seem to get anything straight anymore. And it's who you are as to how long a news release is ran and if you're really of someone of importance, like McGill, then it won't hit the news at all unless it is forced. They need some competition.

5:01... They do have competition now. I've started listening to WLX all the time since I can't pick up WKSR anymore. WLX has done a good job of getting Giles county news on the air. I listened to the election on their station and they had the winners called earlier than wksr. I think they had the WAB's contest before wksr did.

To those who question the relevance of what's happening in Lawrence County to Giles County is as simple as the fact that we are neighbors; we have readers in Lawrence County as well as Maury, Lincoln and a number of other counties and states.
The case in Lawrence County is very similar to what happened in Giles.
The biggest difference is that the people involved in Lawrence County are interested in correcting the problem while many in Giles County are only interested in covering it up. As I said in another threat topic "Integrity can not prevent a mistake but integrity will make every effort to correct the results of that mistake". Allen Barrett

Then why don't you practice a little integrity and stop trying to stir up trouble and cause so much strife and unrest? If you think people are trying to "cover up" something, why don't you come on and name them? But I would be careful in making accusations if I were you. I'm sure you'll recall an individual by the name of Clay McAlister.
