Why Is The Tourism Office Under Attack ?

While there has been some contention and competition between the Tourism and Chamber of Commerce for the most part they seem to have co-existed with separate personnel and missions.

The Chamber primarily under the control of the Industrial Recruiter/Mayor has not been as supportive of the Tourism Office as could have been hoped for. Until Tourism was moved out of the Chamber Office the Chamber was charging Tourism over $12,000.00 a year for rent. This provided approximately 300 Sq. Ft. of space in the Chamber Office and took the entire monetary amount given to Tourism by the County. Finding this totally unacceptable the County Commission voted to move Tourism into the Courthouse where the Tax Assessor Office had been. This move has provided the much needed independence and convenience needed for the Tourism Department to function and flourish.

Now comes another attempt by the County Executive and City Mayor to make Tourism an arm of the Chamber once again under the control of the Mayor/Industrial Recruiter. This did not work very well in the past and I believe it will not be beneficial to the County in the future. Because there is more to Giles County than the city of Pulaski, Tourism must remain independent in order to provide the continued benefits to Giles County.

According to the University of Tennessee Department of Tourism in 2008, the last full year available, Giles County had 19.98 million dollars of direct tourist spending. Keep in mind that the Director of Tourism is the lowest paid head of any department in the county making approximately $12.00 an hour. There are many assistants to assistant directors who make much more than that, but Mr Turner has not complained.

On 20 August the Property Management Committee with Chairman Commissioner Jackson presiding, met and decided to give the Office of Tourism sixty days to vacate their offices. The County Executive as an ex-officio member was asked about possible alternatives to moving but refused any discussion about alternatives.

This is a matter that will have to be voted on by the full Legislative Body probably at the 20 September meeting when new members can once again be caught off guard and be required to vote before they know all the facts in the matter. One can only hope that the full Commission will do the right thing and keep the Tourism Department where they are. Allen Barrett

There needs to be a full report of this in the local newspaper so the public can know what is going on. Hope the full commission votes against movinfg Tourism out of the courthouse. Seems it has only been a few months since the commission moved them in the ex offices of the tax assessor.

Why are they being asked to vacate the offices they are in. What does the county want the space to be used for ?

I heard they planned to move the highway patrol in there. But frankly, I cant see the highway patrol being satisfied with the space. Let them move someplace else.

I agree 6:04 put the THP in the annex
with the emergency management personnel. Their should be plenty of room in the break area or in the kitchen area upstairs next to the County Executives office.
Where ever they move it is going to cost a bunch. People are just now getting used to the Tourism office being accessible and in the courthouse. Allen Barrett

Once again you are sending misleading information. The Chamber has NEVER been under the control of the Mayor or Economic Development Coordinator. I have been on the board, and the Mayor was never part of the descision making process. I don't know what is going on here, but please try to tell the entire story so citizens can make an unbiased educated opinion.

8:00 Are you saying that the mayor has not had anything to do with appointing people to lead the Chamber? The mayor doesn't have a lot to say about what the power company does either except that he is the one who appoints the board and they have a huge say. It's power by proxy you might say. I hope the commission will vote no and let Tourism stay in the same place or even share with the Hwy. Patrol. Tim Turner is one of the hardest workers for such a small amount of pay according to the blog. The two better be glad they have someone like Mr. turner promoting the county.

Anyone involved in tourism and the chamber past or present knows the influence Dan has on both of these entities. You don't need to fool yourself or try and fool others. Tourism is a vital part of our county that needs the proper support. Tourism promotes our county and Mr. Turner has done an excellent job with little resources or support. I certainly hope our commissioners will rethink this idea.

Tim Turner is just a pawn being played in Janet Vanzant's revenge game. She is mad at him for supporting Scott Stewart during the last election and now Tourism has to pay for it. Maybe Janet should take a different approach to people, why do you think so many people hate her? Maybe she should change the way she performs her job (which, by the way is supposed to be in the best interest of the citizens of Giles County not for her petty revenge games she plays.)

Tim has done a GREAT JOB for Giles County Tourism with very little pay to boot. Nobody else would take all the crap he does for that pay.

Don't let petty politics ruin our
County. Tell Janet to keep Tourism
up at the Courthouse where it belongs. Being inconsistent with where our central offices are located shows a lack of leadership on her part.

3:57 And you know this is Janet's revenge how? Sounds like speculation with no facts to back it up. And since you didn't put your real name and telephone number, I will be surprised if your post is not deleted by the blogmaster. According to his rules, it should.

Almost 3,000 people must like Janet well enough to vote for her since they elected her for a third term as county executive.

Mr. Turner may be doing a good job, but people in certain positions should know better than to bite the hand that feeds them, at least not publicly.

While this MAY be payback on Janet's part and petty politics, remember, to the victor goes the spoils. Nobody ever said life was fair.

I have to make a correction to the thread topic. In it I stated that Mr. Turner makes $12.00 an hour. The fact is Mr. Turner has a salary of $18,000.00 which translates into $9.00 an hour. There is no overtime pay and he receives $25.00 a month for his cell phone and mileage for official travel. Allen Barrett

Dan's days are numbered as EDC also. He may not have lost an election, but I'm certain that he would not win any popularity contests now. But getting back to topic, The Mayor and the City really do not get too involved with the Chamber or with Tourism.

5:42 In your post you admitted that this is revenge on the part of Vanzant. Add to that Louise Faulkner (Tourism Board member) also supported Stewart.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

7:32 Please read my post again. I said it "MAY" be payback on Janet's part. I can't admit to something I do not know so I used the word MAY. You and 3:57 may know but I see no evidence or facts to back it up in either comment.

Mr. Turner and Mrs. Faulkner have the right to support the candidate of their choice as do you and I. How vocal and public we want to be about it is also our choice. But in a position like Mr. Turner's, you have to be careful how vocal and public you are for your candidate or you run the risk of payback if your candidate loses, as his did. It happens at the local, state, and federal levels of government as well as the private sector. Payback may not be right but it is a fact of life.

I hope you now understand the point I was trying to make.

Again, Mr. Barrett, why has the post made at 3:57 pm today not been deleted? Does it follow the rules or do I just not understand them?

8:30 That is a wise move on his part. So maybe the reason the tourism office is being moved from the courthouse is something entirely different than revenge. Mr. Turner's support of Scott Stewart may have nothing to do with it. The point is, we don't KNOW why. What has been posted on this blog is mere speculation and nothing more.

The fact remains that Dan Speer is indeed a member, whether it be Ex-Officio or regular member. He loves having his finger in the pie and can't stand it because the tourism want be controlled by the likes of him and I'm stating facts also. Mr. Stoney Jackson knows this and is keeping his promise to Dan Speer that he'll help get the tourism out of the Courthouse hoping they'll have to move back to the Chamber of Commerce. Just a few years back, Mr. Jackson was saying don't touch the THP. They like were they are and if they are forced to move, they'll stop writing tickets and bringing the County revenues. Wonder what happened to that thought? Guess Mr. Speer told him otherwise.

I have not removed the question about the Road Superintendent because it was posted on Sunday and several have read it and it raised a question that can easily be answered by Mr. Hyatt, who has a very open door policy.

The Highway department has been very consistent in living within their budgets and very responsible in meeting the request of the Budget Committee to cut their spending where ever they can.
Each year for at least the past four Mr. Hyatt has done more with less than perhaps any other department and he should be commended for his efforts and accomplishments.
The state highways which are the responsibility of the state DOT are cut under contracts let through the bid process which Mr. Hyatt has no involvement in.
While the County Highway Department does have responsibility for cutting on county roads, they for various reasons simply have not been able to keep up with the extremely fast growing that has been experienced this year, many homeowners have had this same experience. Normally there are four cutters assigned in the north and four in the south ends of the county a staff shortage has temporarily cut that to three.
If you will call 363-1635, Mrs Phillips will assist you with all your highway concerns. Allen Barrett

WAB While agree with you about the rapid weed growth this year and everyone having a hard time keeping the weeds cut, who lost staff? Was it the highway dept or the company that has the cutting contract. Is that Eddie Bass again this year? Then I cant agree with you about Barry cutting his budget as much as he could Dont he still keep Julie Philips on staff when she should have gone to the budget office 4 years ago? Could save a goodly amount of bucks there. Nothin against Barry but lets not play favorite here.

The question was simply why has the County Highway Dept. let the county roads grow up so. I don't mean that the weeds are a few inches high, they are tremendously high to the point that when it rains and they sag, you cant see what's coming if your going on a narrow road or around a sharp curve. Not only is the weeds tall but the bushes has not been cut all summuer. It was merely a question, not an accusation. I still stand behind what I said that I've never ever seen the county roadsides in this kind of shape before.

Nobody better attempt to tell me that I have no voice or cannot help with a situation or problem because I am not elected. I pay taxes in this county and they seem to keep going up every time I get my tax notice. Until I am exempt from paying taxes, I will continue to be proactive and stand behind anyone who is doing the right thing to have our elected officials and county employees do right by us. Period.

What! The shameful problems facing Giles County today is not because of Mr. Barrett but by the incompetent county officials that cant seem to do a simple job as making sure a candidate is qualified or not. If you want to know who's costing the taxpayers money, look at those people, not Barrett. Lawsuits are being filed on a regular basis around here just because the Officials will not do what they know is right. Look at the Lisa White case. The taxpayers were cost $70,000.00 just because Mrs. Vanzant said we had no qualified applicants. No, it's not Barrett, it's who we keep putting into office. Stay in tune and maybe just maybe you'll wise up one of these days.

You have a very imature understanding of God's Word and before you go using it to attack other people you ought to get more familiar with it yourself.

Sorry, but I have absolutely no respect for allen barrett. There's a rather famous quote that says man is respectable only inasmuch as he respects. Do you think that he (barrett) has any respect whatsoever for the voters in 7th District? If you think he does, would you mind explaining that one?

1;04
But the difference here is that Peter and Paul did not stir up trouble and cause strife among the brethren. They were also in the right and no the wrong.
Yes, I suggested to barrett that he should read 1Timothy. Peter and Paul were certainly not guilty of the things Paul wrote to Timothy in that particular letter.

I'm not 9:48 but I'll answer your question. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Barrett or anyone else who is willing to stand up and be counted for good. That's something you will never understand because you have become so set in your way of seeing things that you are as blind as any sightless person.
Mr. Barrett served his country and his county and has done so with distinction. Yes, he has respect for the voters in his district enough respect that he doesn't want to to see them ripped off with a phony candidate. There was no mistake made in the elections office it was fraud.
Now I am 1:04 and I'll stand firmly by what I said and if you think Paul didn't jump on "the brethren" you certainly didn't read any of the Letters to the Corinthians where he scalded "the brethren" for their behavior that they saw as right in their eyes. What do you think Paul did in the situation with Barnabas and John Mark, there was so much tension that they had to split up. Peter created quite a stir when he refused to stop preaching Jesus and when he told "the brethren" that it was OK to eat anything that God had made what do you think their reaction was.
You are a fool because you think you have a monopoly on the truth and God's word. You have even at time on this blog said you are so smart that you even know who Mr. Barrett prays for and what is the real motivation for his actions.
Ask your preacher sometimes for a little guidance about knowing someone else's heart and motivation and who they pray for. Stupidity is one thing but brother you exceed all stupidity in your foolish arrogance and enabling of evil.

Well, that's where you and I would strongly disagree right off the bat. I don't see barrett as standing up for any good other than his own. I understand that perfectly.
Granted, he may have served his country just like many others have. But what has he done for the county? In my opinion, the ony thing he has done is cause trouble and kindle hatred and distrust throughout the county. So you and I would also disagree on what constitutes service to our county.
You say barrett only wants to make sure the voters aren't going to be ripped off? Well, isn't that precisely what the "outspoken man of integrity and common sense" is trying to do to those same voters?
you mention fraud. That's a fairly new twist on this issue for you guys. Why don't you name those individuals you suggest are guilty of fraud? Oh, by the weay, don't forget to give your name and address when you do.
Your analogy of what Paul did to his brethren is a stretch at best when it comes to what barrett is trying to do. Paul was trying to get his brethren to accept Christ and to repent. That's not the case with barrett. In my opinion, he's trying to take from Mrs. Coleman something that she won by a huge margin over him. Is barrett trying to encourage his brethren to good works and Christianity? Surely, you don't believe that yourself.
May I suggest something for you? Why don't you ask your preacher why you shouldn't be running around calling people fools? Ask him. Better yet, why don't you print off a copy of your nasty post and show it to him? That is, unless you are actually barrett or your preacher is him.

The Christians at Corinth had lost their way you dunce and Paul was trying to get them to understand and act right not become Christians which they already were. I'm not the expert on Mr. Barret that you claim to be but I do know he has a long list of good things that he has done for the county from the Financial Management to Charter Commission and stopping the county wide zoning.
Why do you make a claim that every time someone disagrees with you they have to be Mr Barret, are you that dumb or just that possessed. One thing I can assure you of if I was Mr. Barrett I would have deleted everything you wrote in the past few days then I would find your rock pull your cowardly butt out and fix your attitude problem.

Look, Paul went about various places proclaiming the word and restoring the erring. And anytime he or any of the others went about doing so, there was always the plea and/or hope that non-Christians would be converted.
I'm sorry that I don't have your lofty level of intelligence that would allow me to see things exactly as you do. Is that why you call me names? Is that why you threatened me with the "rock" scenario? If you only knew how unafraid I am of the whole lot of you guys.

Financial Management cost the taxpayers a LOT of money. The charter is something we do not need and would also cost the county a bunch of money. As far as zoning, I wish allen barrett's neighbor would put a hog pen right beside his house. Or better yet, how about a rock quarry or waste dump?
Yes, allen barrett has a list of "deeds" he is responsible for. I don't consider any one of them to be good deeds. But you failed to include the division and strife that now exists county-wide these days.

6:13 you are the one who suggested that Barrett read some verses in the Bible that according to you would help him become more obedient. I asked the question if you were suggesting that we should all become slaves to the government, then you claimed if Barrett followed the example of Paul he would be able to get along with everyone. I stated the facts about Paul's divisiveness and blunt declarations to the Christians. Now you try to ignore all that and change the whole structure of the conversation. Then when all your defenses are destroyed you accuse me of being Barrett that isn't only a lie it's a stupid lie. You want to enter into a debate but you want everyone else to debate with the same limited understanding you have.
Yes you should be deleted because you have lied and gossiped without any support. It's not about me forgiving you but you might need to talk to God about forgiving you for the overly inflated self righteousness and selective application of rules and laws that your Pharisee attitude has taken.

Let's please try and get back on track with the subject of this thread.
Before Tourism moved into its present home in the Courthouse they were paying $12,000.00 a year in county money to the Chamber of Commerce for a small space slightly larger than a walk-in closet. Since their move to the Courthouse the money they paid previously has been much better invested in magazine ads and other means of promoting Giles County as a whole. The results have been, by University of Tennessee estimates, approximately 19 million dollars brought into the county.
Now comes the situation where the Highway Patrol has had a rent increase on their office space and will now be required to pay $12,000.00 a year for rent.
Mrs Vanzant and Commissioner Jackson have offered a solution that involves the Highway Patrol moving into the Tourism offices at an undisclosed cost and the Tourism office moving somewhere else at an undisclosed cost.
The question should not be whether there should be a Highway Patrol office or a Tourism office but how can each be maintained maximizing their benefits while minimizing there cost.
The first question: Was there any effort made to negotiate a smaller rental increase than the three hundred dollars a month proposed?
2nd question: Will the cost of moving these two offices be greater than the difference in the rent increase approximately $3600.00?
3rd question: Will the county be better benefited with Tourism out of the most historical building in the city, where they give tours at least weekly, and replaced with a patrol office that isn't even open most of the time?
These certainly aren't the only questions that need to be discussed before the County Commission meets on the 20th and decides the fate of Giles County Tourism but they are important for starters.

As was said by an earlier poster, Tim Turner is a pawn being played in the County Executive's revenge game. She is mad at him for supporting Scott Stewart during the last election. Now Tourism has to pay for it. Maybe she should take a different approach to people. Why do you think so many people hate her? Maybe she should change the way she performs her job. It is supposed to be in the best interest of the citizens of Giles County and not for her petty revenge games she plays.

3:56- You stand your ground? Really, anonymous posting is hardly standing your ground. You state, "you think I need forgiveness? What a laugh." WoW arrogant and smug especially when GOD's WORD says we all need forgiveness.
I understand that these lawsuits cost the county money. However none of you wab-bashers actually would give a flip about the tax dollars being spent if it were anybody but Mr. Barrett. You are liars if you say otherwise. He believes an irregularity occurred during the election and is willing to endure the attacks of a personal nature to attempt to correct that wrong. Yes she got more votes, but what you can't seem to understand is that she was not LEGALLY eligible to receive those votes. She thought she was, she was told she was, and she acted in good faith as far as I know. But for all of you to virtually say, "Ignore our laws, let's make up laws to suit our individual agendas or perpetuate a vendetta is pretty sick and in my opinion, desperate. You would not urge laws and our Constitution to be trampled on if were anybody but Mr. Barrett. As I have stated before, I am new here, I don't know Mr. Barrett, Ms VanZant, Tee Jackson, Stoney Jackson, the Harwells or any of those who apparently have lots of clout and I am not related to anybody of that group either. The fact of the matter is that I sometimes agree with Mr Barrett and sometimes disagree. The difference however is he doesn't hide behind his "momma's skirts" and finger point and offer lots of criticism with no suggestions for a better way. He has convictions. You know where he stands. You others are apparently for sale to whoever tells you what you want to hear. I find your type much more dangerous. I was always taught if you can't sign your name to it, then you need to not say it. There is no other explanation other than cowardice. And for the record, everyone that posts on here that sounds "pro-Barrett" is no more Mr. Barrett posting anonymously than everyone posting on here "anti-Barrett" is Janet VanZant posting anonymously. I am going to post my name now, I do not know if there are citizens with the same or similar names, but believe what you wish. I'm afraid your hatred for Mrs. Vanzant is driving you crazy. And up until your attempt to get the election overturned, I still believed you were sane. Schizophrenia is personified by a coward who rabidly pretends to be a brave person. Paranoid is seen in the person who makes claims that everyone is the same person out to persecute him.
Extreme narcissism is when you place yourself far above everyone else so that they their value, thoughts, experiences and life are meaningless compared to yours.
Psychiatrist that's the person who takes notes while you talk about those other people who are so evil.
The psychiatrist is also the one who is translating your words into various little doodles that spell out "this guy is nuts".

No, I'm simply telling him what someone closer to him should have been telling him for quite awhile now. If It comes across as maliciousness on my part, that is not the goal. He brings this on himself by being mean and hurtful to people of his choosing, and I just want him to stop. But he apparently has no shame.
No, I'm the kettle who is calling the pot black. And you bet I'm going to nail him with the truth when he misbehaves. What is wrong with telling, for example, a thief that he needs to stop stealing?

Mr. McAlister may be willing to rent barrett the house he's l;iving in right now. But who knows?
I also hope to find out when the trial comes up so I can make plans to be there and see this. I understand Little Rog Hays will be representing Mr. McAlister in what I believe will be a defammation of character lawsuit. It's not going to be a good day for the "man on outspoken integrity and common sense".

I understand that is precisely what Mr. McAlister intends to do. And I think he has a solid case.

No, 3:25, Mr. McAlister didn't touch barrett's signs. He only moved Mrs. Vanzant's sign away from those barrett placed on both sides of hers. This will be brought out when the TBI is finished with their investigation. Let's wait and see.

Then please explain why barrett made a big deal of it on this blog, went out there and put two of his signs on both sides of Mrs. Vanzant's sign, and then hid in the bushes with a camera. It was a cleverly designed trap. If it wasn't then why was barrett seen hiding in the buses out there? Yes, he WAS seen.
How can you defend such devious and sneaky behavior?

To 6:12 once again you allow your venomous hatred and gossip to over ride the truth and good sense.
Here are some truths for you to consider. First, there was no big deal made by me, I simply reported the event and you tried to turn it into a big deal against me. Second, I did not hide in the bushes, I was in my truck part of the time and later I was in my car parked near the Shell station. I challenge you to produce one person who says they say me hiding in the bushes, it just didn't happen, but your continued creative treatment of truths qualifies you for a job as obama's press secretary.

The fact remains that you set up this whole fiasco in an attempt to, in my opinion, gain sympathy votes. But the FACT remains that you only got 254 votes in spite of all your best efforts. An acquaintance of mine told me he was driving home from work and saw you down in the bushes. I suppose he lied? What are you going to say when it is shown that Mr. MCAlister's fingerprints are not on any of your signs?

You are a clueless soul 3:43. To constantly harp on this situation leads one to believe just how worried you are of what the outcome will be. Fingerprints, DNA, etc, yada, yada, yada....what does exist that you can't seem to wrap your pea brain around is the report was written up that Mr. McAllister was witnessed on the video taking the signs. Are you saying that the officer who took the report is lying?? That would be a mighty big accusation and considering who that officer is and the respect he has earned over the years doing his job and in general as person, I would be careful, you just might have to back up that claim.

Try to wrap your brain around this minor point. Mr. McAlister did not touch allen barrett's signs. Furthermore, the so-called video won't show that either. I'm not accusing anyone of lying. Did it ever occur to you that the officer wrote up what he was told? I really don't know what happened there, but I believe Mr. McAlister when he says he never touched barrett's signs. We shall see, right?

Monday, October 04, 2010 8:51:00 PM

So let me get something straight, oh wise one, you are stating that there was someone telling the officer how to write the report? Another tall accusation. Well, who was it then?? If you really don't know what happened, as you state, then why do you continue to state that you do?? Do you or someone close to you work for the police dept? How do you know if McAllister touched the signs or not? You seem to have so much to say, why not spill the beans on all you think you know. Your brain I question. You can't seem to wrap yours around the most minor of things and that being there is a police report stating he touched the signs. What part of this do you not understand? Not the beginning, the middle or the end. Again, you are clueless.

Are you really that stupid? How would an officer know what to write down if nobody gave information? Imagine a two-car accident at an intersection. Do you think the officer just walks up and writes down what he THINKS might have happened and who failed to yield at the light?
Yes, I know Mr. McAlister didn't touch the signs. And I'm certainly not clueless wqhen it comes to that. Why don't you just wait and see and stop with all your derogatory remarks.

Oh but you are clueless. You don't even have all the facts. You think you do, but you don't. You are the one who has been proven to be stupid. Yes, Mr. Barrett gave a statement but, your post indicated there was someone else possibly telling the officer what to write. And by the way, you are suggesting that only Mr. Barrett's word was taken and not any other evidence. Speaks volumes about how much you really know or are trying to possibly cover up?? You wish you were more in the know than you are, so you make up crap to feel important. Wow,you are a shallow person indeed. And, if my derogatory remarks offend you than I suggest you not read my posts. I couldn't care less how I make you feel. You should be concerned with how you make yourself look. I am happy to step on toes and hurt feelings...the truth has a way of doing that. So get over your overinflated sense of self and post something you actually know something about or shut your pie hole. Now that would be refreshing.
