What's Happening With The School Board?
Well, looks like the school board is determined to pay the Tennessee School Board Association $10,000.00 to find a new Director of Schools for them. This reportedly comes after more broken commitments to locals about the replacement.
Mrs Braden is currently serving as interim director in violation of current residency requirements. While I have no problem with Mrs Braden's ability to serve as interim director I certainly question the decision that placed her in that position while she is not a resident of this county. When she was recommended and that recommendation was challenged by another board member because she does not live in the county, Board Chairman Mike Young made the statement well, "you could throw a rock from this county to where she lives". That may be so, but unfortunately the distance is so great you can not throw a sack of property tax money from her house to this county. Why go through that mess again when the requirements are for the director to be a resident of the county, oh well, it's just a rule.
The bigger question is why was Mr JB Smith offered the job of director with the commitment from the school board that if he did well after six months he would become the new Director? Why would the school board pay $10,000.00 of Giles County tax dollars to a Nashville group to send someone, with more connections to Nashville than to Giles County, down here to be the school director when highly qualified and proven people in the system now could do a more than adequate job? Could it be that with his long success as a principal at one of the tougher schools in the county Mr. Smith just has his priorities in the wrong place? With a history of more emphasis placed on academics than sports has Mr. Smith simply placed himself outside of consideration? It's been reported that the "coaches", one in particular, wants some one as dedicated to sports as was Mr. Jackson, that would be a huge mistake. While I love the competition of athletics I desire an educated populace much more.
It is past time for the school board and the school system to get their priorities straight and create a school system that is both disciplined and productive. I believe that much of the frustration experienced by teachers, and in part the reason for such excessive absenteeism among teachers, is a lack of strong supportive leadership and this conflict of just what is the most important part of their job, to provide a small group of young men and women the opportunity to play ball or provide them the education they so desperately need.
I hope the School Board will reconsider this huge expense, appoint Mr. Smith with a six month probation period and if he works out give him the permanent position, if he doesn't work out then the only thing lost is some time and the process can begin again. What is the rush to make another huge mistake. Get everything in order and do it all by the rules.

What is wrong with the school board? Mr Smith would make a good director.
If you were at the Board meeting, Mr. Smith does not want to be interim. Mr. Barrett, you are only reporting your opinion on this one and not the facts. Mr. Smith chose not to take the interim position is my take from the meeting Monday. It was his if he wanted it and he said no. And if you think others in the system are qualified then you understand you have to open the position to anyone that is interested and can't just appoint someone interim and then give them the job after 6 months. That is not fair at all. I would think you of all people would want this process to be open to anyone interested (even people outside of Giles County) so that the MOST qualified person will get the job. Just seems like you will never be satisfied with anything done by the school system since your arrest how many ever years ago that was. (By the way, I hope Mr. Smith does get the job if he choses to apply for it. Does anyone know if he is planning on applying?)
Does everyone not think that our children would be better served is out director was from Giles County. Preferably a product of the school system.
There is no way that someone unfamiliar with our schools can do a better job than someone who knows how our system works. Is this matter completely out of our hands? Such a shame.
Ray Lanier
I would hope that they hire the best person to run a school system. Someone from a better school system would be great. Giles County needs to reach for higher standards. Our children deserve the best person for the job. Assuming that someone from Giles County is best is ignorant.
9:36
I think you are right. The resentment seems obvious to me. Excellent post.
After moving away from the state and working for the largest school system in the state where I live, I can tell you that Giles County better get itself together as far as standards and academics. Teachers are no longer respected in Giles County!!!!!! You people treat them as if they are the scum of the earth! Choose a director who will be dedicated to Academics and investing in the county and build a sense of community.
oh that's right,1:52, we sure got our money's worth out to Tee, didn't we? You should know quite a bit about being ignorant.
I had been hearing the rumor Mr. Smith was going to be the next Director of School. What happen?
Was the last two Directors not out of county? Did that work out fine?
How much is Tee Jackson behind this?
How many people applied for the job?
Where did the missing money not missing go?
Do you really think that where the money went will ever be made public? Not in their lifetime.
I think that some of you are confused. 8:24-a director has not been named. There will be applications taken for that position. Mrs. Debbie Braden was named as interim position, Mr. Smith made the suggestion himself that she be named since she is already familiar with the job and he did not want to leave his school on a temporary basis. Having worked for the school system for several years I can tell you that there are always people dissatified with the director of schools. You cannot make everyone happy. The local superintendents we had in the past would have been on this blog too. Parents will always think that their children are perfect and that they are being mistreated.
The school sytem is the biggest employer in Giles County and it takes a lot of money to run a business with 600+ employees. Even if there are no raises the cost to operate goes up, gas electricity, all types of insurance. The federal and state government has put a huge load on teachers, principals and administration. I know that everyone thinks that the central office has too many employees but there is more and more paper work added daily. Most of the reports are due at certain dates and there are even monetary penalties if they are late! Principals are having to do the stupid evaluations that take hundreds of hours and don't mean anything. I think that we have several qualified people in Giles County that could be great directors and we have several that will apply that will be bad, with their own agendas. I would much rather see a local person but if things don't change in the system we are going to be taken over by the state because of grades, the football program will be up a creek then because the money will be spent by the state on programs they think we need and taken from the sports program.
Sorry this got a little longer than I intended! LOL
Mr. Barrett, once again you are quoting things that you don't know. You were not at the meeting and apparently are taking the word from the grapevine. There was no promise to Mr. Smith to take the job for six months and then he could be director if he did a good job. He did not want the job as interim. As for Mrs. Braden not living in Giles County, she is not director, she is interim, 2 different things. The DIRECTOR of schools in the last contract had to live in Giles County. This is a new director and the guidelines have not been set so nothing has been done wrong. If Mrs. Braden had gotten the job of director and those were the guidelines then they would be wrong. Why bring someone in temporarily that has no idea of what is going on when she can do the job. That was Mr. Smith's suggestion just so you know.
4:50 If you would have taken the time to read what I posted as the topic you would have known that I never suggested that Mr. Smith be appointed as interim direct nor did I say he was promised the interim director.
In fact I posted clearly that everything should be done in order and by the rules, that means understanding that no one be promised anything without an open competition for the position. As you know I have been very critical of people being placed in positions without the jobs being properly posted, so it would be highly unlikely I would now suggest a person simply be given the job even if they have proven themselves.
I do oppose strongly paying the folks in Nashville anything to do what should be done by the board here. I do strongly believe that Mr Smith should be considered and that he or who ever is considered be given a trial period and the board not sign an unread contract as was done in the past then continually extend that contract in violation of state law.
As I said I have no problem with Mrs Braden being the interim, but I was disgusted with the flippant remark by the Board Chairman that you could throw a rock from this county to her house.
The collective board, certainly there were some that tried, has shown a spineless approach to dealing with the director as verified in him being given renewal contracts when he should have been fired years ago.
As for your comment about the "grapevine" I was not present at the meeting but have you never heard of an audio recording.
Almost living here makes as much sense as being "a little bit pregnant." You either do or you don't. What is the loophole that would allow the board to get around that qualification?
Is this going to be like changing the rules for obtaining a beer licence?
Ray Lanier
Barrett, c'mon Scooter start telling the truth: You did say Smith was offered the interim job:
"The bigger question is why was Mr JB Smith offered the job of director with the commitment from the school board that if he did well after six months he would become the new Director?" --A. Barrett.
That carelessness and then denial is why folks laugh at your "journalism". Pointer: when your misrepresentations are pointed out to you....accept responsibility for them. Same thing you did on the McAlister tape thread. I am getting a little tired of having to cut and paste your own words to call you on these items. Shape up.
I think it is funny now some are screaming for best qualified but when it comes to financial management and other offices it is best fit. Wonder why?
We paid an outside firm in Georgia to evaluate and rank the applicants applying for the Finance Director position when the Act of 1981 was being implemented. We see how that turned out now don't we?? Not only did we pay an outside and probably very knowledgeable source, we didn't consider their results as well as wasted tax dollars. I see our county elected officials haven't learned anything from the most recent debacle within the school system of "missing money" that has prompted the resignation of the current director. Be mindful it is the oversight of this school board that created the havoc that cost valuable employees of our school system their jobs and have left us all with unanswered questions as to what happened to the money. Does it make any sense at all to let them handle making such a decision considering?? Not to mention the absurdity that we have incumbents only running for school board this election. Hard to wrap your mind around the fact that people in this community stand scratching their heads why we have the problems we have in this county as we keep electing inept candidates to hold office. Wake up Giles Countians!!
Mr. Barrett, so you think that someone should take the job as a trial for six months. Now who in their right mind would quit a job to take a six months job? Of course they could already be unemployed and be glad to take a six month job but then we would have to wonder why they were unemployed in the first place. Thanks 9:27 for pointing out to Mr. Barrett what he really did say. Of course, he will twist that around to mean something else that only he can read between the lines of.
9:27 maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention or maybe I'm just confused but your cut and paste seems to be more supportive of Barrett than it does of you.
"The bigger question is why was Mr JB Smith offered the job of director with the commitment from the school board that if he did well after six months he would become the new Director?" --A. Barrett.
Is there a difference in being director and being interim director
as 4:50 points out?
I'm not taking sides but it seems like to me that Barrett said director not interim director in what you cut and pasted so I fail to understand what your complaint is with that statement. Is there something I'm missing somewhere else?
As for the six months trial why would a person with the confidence in their abilities be afraid they could not cut it for six months? I have had several jobs where I was on trial or probation every police/sheriff department I know of works the same way on that.
Sounded to me like director for 6 months. Hence, "interim".
sounded to me like a trial period or probationary period before giving a long fat contract.
Then why did he say AFTER 6 months he would become the NEW director. If he not the new director now he must have been the interim.
Monday, October 01, 2012 12:20:00 AM
Good post. Pay someone to tell you what to do then don't take their advise. Could that not happen with paying someone to help find a Director of School. The one they find might not be the best fit for the job.
Better call the I-team immediately!!!!!! This MUST be on tv at once.
What an incredible mountain has tried to be made out of an ant hill, all because someone can't understand the difference between the term directer and interim director. No where did I state or suggest to any intelligent human that Mr Smith was promised the position of "INTERIM" director. No where did I question the ability of Mrs Braden to be the interim director. It's almost like I'm writing English, even if poorly, but some readers are seeing Deutsche and therefor getting a totally different idea of what I stated. May I suggest that when you read what I write take it for what it says and stop the petty two bit attempts to change my words to suit your bias.
Getting awful tired of having to do this. BUT, here is what you actually said:
"The bigger question is why was Mr JB Smith offered the job of director with the commitment from the school board that if he did well after six months he would become the new Director?"
So, Scooter, you said it.
He would not be the new director for 6 months. Maybe your fingers just move faster than your mind.
Quit blaming Barrett. He wasn't even at the meeting so how could you expect him to be accurate when he reports what happened there.
Exactly 9:20 he does not report acurrately. He takes people gossip and then writes it as truth. We have to prove what we say but he just says what he thinks. OK Barrett, he was not promised to be DIRECTOR for six months. Where did you get the idea that he was?
Damn people don't you know the difference between director and interim director?
The man said plainly director not interim director what's so hard to understand about that.
If a person is hired as a police officer with a six months probation period is that person considered an interim officer or or an officer with full authority to enforce the law?
Some of you people are beyond stupid in your single minded desire to attack Barrett on this matter.
So at the end of 6 months the police officer is hired as the NEW police officer. I don't think so. You are as clueless as Scooter.
I cannot believe the words out of Barretts mouth (typed on blog) " make a mountain out of a mole hill". I damn sure hope you were looking in the mirror when you wrote that. You can't report the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Your post are half truths intending to twist people's logical thinking into "the mountain". You are the master of this! Hope it bites you in the ass one day!
Are any of you people out of middle school? You remind me of children on a playground. Piss and moan, bitch and gripe. If the blog bothers you all so much, STOP reading the damn thing.
When has anyone proved what they wrote on here?
The old saying "take it with a grain of salt" is what I think of the post.
Why do people get so bent out of shape about what they read?
Barrett always says he has proved what he said. Of course no one else can prove anything. I have argued with him in the past and he was always right, just ask him. The board was choosing an interim director of schools so that was the only subject at the meeting, it had nothing to do with choosing Mr. Smith for a six months "trial". That is what the difference between director and interim is that is being discussed. Yes, Mr. Barrett we can read, you are not smarter than than the rest of us even though you think we are not capable of thinking for ourselves and reading your speeches.
Mr. Barrett who told you that Mr. Smith had been offered the directors job on a six month trial. It definitely was not discussed at the board meeting or workshop.
Mr. Smith and mrs. Braden were asked to come to the work session slash called meeting to discuss the interim, yes I said interim director. Mr. Smith did not want to leave his school for six months and then apply for the job and let TSBA decline his application if they felt the urge to do so. During the six months our school board is going to spend $10,000.00 to have someone look at applications and send what they think are the best five to our board. They might send a local back or they may send back five never heard of. So why would Mr. Smith risk his position when the board won't do the processing themselves. Once again your tax dollars at work on something stupid. And obviously it doesn't seem to matter where Braden. Lives either. It doesn't say must be a stones throw from Giles county border. Suppose to live in county. I was there so argue with me. And. Don't anyone bitch Bout board members elected this go round. You should. Have run Gainst them.
6:02 You said: "The board was choosing an interim director of schools so that was the only subject at the meeting, it had nothing to do with choosing Mr. Smith for a six months "trial".
Why were they choosing an interim director, isn't that what Mrs. Braden is? If they want to give her the director job, do it and forget hiring someone to help decide. Who's idea was hiring someone to help find a director anyway?
7:05 is right, why didn't someone run against the members that was elected in the last election.
Mrs. Braden was Assistant Director. You cannot just give someone a job. There have to be advertisements and job postings. I agreee 100% on the running unapposed. If people were so unhappy they should have run or found someone they liked better to run against them. I don't blame Mr. Smith one bit for not taking the position. He was the one who suggested at the meeting that the best person for interim was Mrs. Braden since she was at the office already and knew what was going on. I don't think paying $10,000 is a good idea either. They should do the work themselves, look what has happened with the last two directors who TSBA helped with.
Hiring TSBA to help find a director is same as saying we are to dumb to do it. They can beat that and save the money.
Give it to Mr Smith or Mrs Braden and save that money. The school system needs it. Money don't grow on trees in Giles County.
Maybe they are too dumb.
$10,000.00 is an insurance policy to insulate the School Board from those who will not like the person who they finally hire. All they have to say is : "we did not select this person; TSBA did".
I agree the Board is too dumb and too weak. They don't have the guts to do their job
Did Ray get his internet turned off or something? There just haven't been enough stupid posts lately.
You have filled in admirably 4:55 no one could have provided more stupid comments than you.
Oh shit 5:55, I almost passed out due to laughter from your post. How did you ever become so clever? Please tell us! Please?
I watched you and did the opposite 6:13.
Wow! There you go again. Your wit is amazing! They should create a slot at the fair for you to perform. Thanks so much for your enlightenment.
I hope everyone got to see Obama get Mittslapped last night. It is amazing how bad a man can make a boy look in a real debate.
It is hard for someone to defend a disaster. I really hope you saw it Ray.
I guess everyone has to have a reason to live, 8:02. It's a pity that it is your hatred for me that keeps you going, though. I can only surmise that I must have bitch-slapped you at one time or another, and you have never gotten over it. You'll never be the man I am, but I reckon you can keep trying. Sneak up behind me someday and introduce yourself, it will be my pleasure to meet you again.
Ray Lanier
I have to agree with AB on this one; why in the world would we have to go out of the county when there are so many capable candidates here?
I don't hang out with losers Ray. I prefer to surround myseld with people that have enough brains to challenge me.
fortunately, that is a very low bar.
Thank God for Mitt Romney! He is exactly right. Wall Street is not our problem and needs no regulation.
But, that Sesame Street??? Why, we HAVE to crack down on it .... NOW.
Go Mitt!
sesame made over a billion dollars in profits why do they need subsidizing?
Romney made it very clear we need some regulations just not stupid ones like obama has created with special banks and businesses that are "too big to fail", that's the kind of business the Rockerfellows, Carnegies, Vanderbilts and other monopolist would dearly have loved.
I concur,11:52. As long as he surrounds "hisseld" with idiots, he shall be in like company. And lest we forget, they must be cowards, as well. Right, anonymous dumbass 11;34? You fill me with awe and fear. You do, oh you do. Freak.
Ray Lanier
a billion dollars in profits??? Wow, you might want to watch The Count a little bit more....might learn something. That is, before Romney cancels the show.
you are kidding, you don.t know seseme street is a multi billion dollar industry?
9:18 you have to remember the bailouts and businesses that are too big to fail ideology that has been adopted by the current administration started on Bush's watch. Be fair and honest. Neither one of them were right in bailing out the businesses in contrast to capitalistic ideologies.
I wish you would copy and paste one of your articles on here Ray. I would love to read one. They sound exciting.
Maybe you should take one of the topics from Barrett and display your acumen for us to see. Just give a little perspective as to why Barrett is right or wrong on the topic.
Maybe that will keep your critic quiet?
5:49, I will be glad to post a sample article I wrote, for your reading pleasure. To keep from taking over an active thread, I'll post on an older one. I would rather not post anything that relates to anyone on here, though, as y'all might have noticed that my opinions sometimes cause dissention among the ranks. I will post a generic one on computer maintenance on the Congratulations to Commissioner Jackson thread several topics below.I'm not sure how exciting you'll find it, but it's what I do.
Ray Lanier
I wish you could comprehend sarcasm Ray. However, post away.
And I wish you were better at it, perhaps then it would be comprehensible, coward.
Ray Lanier
Of course you can't stay on the subject. How juvenile.
Every time something is published on this blog, the comments start off on topic, but degenerate into petty squabbling. I don't understand why Mr. Lanier has to resort to calling people "dumbass" and "coward"...
Has anyone seen what is on our courthouse lawn? That shouldn't be allowed for them to put anything in favor of either candidate on the courthouse lawn.
Ray does it out of insecurity. I guess I should post a sidenote to let him know I am being sarcastic since he doesn't seem to get it.
Maybe if people would cut out their sarcastic remarks he wouldn't do that.
What is posted on the on the courthouse lawn? Can some one post a picture of it?
Why don't you call the courthouse and ask them, that's waht the CG would do.
All I did was ask a question 7:54. You are as bad as the enabler. If any one else besides igno at 7:54 would be helpful and answer the question since the courthouse is closed today I would appreciate it. And before any other less than smart remarks come my way I am unable to drive into town. Thank you.
I suppose you are speaking of the American Flag and the honors to Americans that died in defense of our nation, I can see where that would be very unfair to the anti American obama and his muslim brotherhood.
It's interesting that someone posted a comment about Sesame Street being "under attack" by Mitt Romney.
A poster then stated, "sesame made over a billion dollars in profits why do they need subsidizing?
Then with a good amount of sarcasm
5 Oct 12:13PM stated "a billion dollars in profits??? Wow, you might want to watch The Count a little bit more....might learn something."
Here are some things to ponder, Big Bird is richer than Romney and pays less income tax while taking 14 million a year directly from the government.
Sesame Street alone makes over 50 million a year from merchandise. They are now selling education franchises for profit in 124 different countries. The CEO Gary Knell makes over $956,000.00 a year
Sesame Street has made more than a billion dollars since it began.
The Jim Henson Company which was the parent company of Sesame Street, the Muppets, and a dozen other programs is a billion dollar company.
What an amazing week. We wait 40 years for someone to defend the conservative principles and when confronted with an opportunity to do so, Mitt Romney runs and hide.
In his primary campaign he said he was against federal funding for teachers, the estate tax, extension of Bush tak cuts, spending on green energy, extension of Medicare, and Obamacare protections against pre-existing conditions.
Now, in front of 70 million people (not just right-wing nuts) he can't defend those positions and is now FOR the hiring of more teachers, will not abolish the estate tax, will not extend Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, wants federal money spent on green energy, would restore $7 billion to Medicare, and would amend his health care plan to protect those with pre-existing conditions.
No real surprises as his positions were really indefensible.
Mitt Romney = President Obama-lite!
9:19 I think the draft-dodger Romney would be more offended.
For the posters wondering, I call people dumbasses when I think that's what they are. I call others cowards when they choose to make personal attacks and hide behind the label of anonymous. If they really feel the way they say they do about me, they should at least sign their name. To not do so is the very definition of a coward.
Perhaps Allen should create a topic for my critics to bash me, thus leaving the topics that matter for comments that matter.I ignor as long as I can, then I respond in kind.
Ray Lanier
i thought racism and name-calling were required on this blog?
11:53 They both lie isn't that what politicians are suppose to do?
Actually I think President Obama was consistent with his campaign. It was only Governor Romney who did a 180 degree shift....Just like when he said he was "Pro-choice" when running for Senate from Massachusetts.
I believe the fact that Romney only has a 37 per-cent approval rating in Massachusetts speaks volumes. Who knows him better than his own constituents?
sorry I missed the funeral for your brain 12:53. I doubt you will ever miss it since you used it so seldom.
If you could actually tell the truth about something, maybe you could begin with what day it is and work your way up to the time then what year it is, in about twenty years you may even become an honest person, just keep practicing and someday you will be able to tell the truth as easily as you lie.
Surely, though, calling names is out of place here....anyway, we've moved way on past the original topic. What is a "dumbass", anyway?
I don't think it is, 7:39, although it should be. If you read back to when Kendrick started this blog, there were always calling him names.
5:23 Hey Allen, I just read both posts. Where do you think he lied?
I think I heard the same thing in the debate.
4:38 It is sad when a candidate's home state don't support him like Tennessee didn't support Al Gore.
8:58
The only enablers I know of those like you who keep promoting the Allen Barrett lie that I willfully promote and go along with wrongdoings. I'm sure he wishes you would stop making it an issue. It makes the both of you look bad.
CG What do you think about Big Bird and friends on the courthouse lawn?
They have taken down the two signs: "Romney don't fire me" and "Obama 2012"
They are beautiful and very well done, but we still know what it stands for.
Ha! Gotta love it. It is still unbelievable that the ONLY cut Romney proposed in the federal budget was Sesame Street.
The PBS support equals .001% of the federal budget.
Good job Mitt! One of these ideas a year will cut 1% of the federal budget.....in 100 years.
That's change you can believe in.
10:06 sorry you do not like it but I do not know any other way to refer to you because I have seen more proof of that as opposed to what you tout you are without showing any proof in your posts. Remember it is your posts and your posts alone I base my opinion on and not any thing you think Barrett has done. Crying every time some one refers to you in a way you do not like is silly. If you do not like it just ignore it. After all you are anonymous as well.
12:15, you are one very ignorant person if that is all you took from the debate. All sides of the media admitted that Obama got his ass handed to him in the debate. Romney had real plans for the people in the country that want to help themselves.
The only people I have heard supporting Obama are the ones that get his handouts or Obamaphones. Most of them can't comprehend more than 10 words that were spoken in the debate. It is clear to me why you are still supportive of the guy.
You aren't fooling any intelligent person with your posts. You just make yourself seem incredibly dumb.
Wow, 12:15 is either a troll or very stupid. Romney slaughtered Obama in the debate. The Obama team has blamed the moderator, lies, altitude and now John Kerry and none of those have stuck, even with the liberal media. Only a complete imbecile or a lazy sob would vote for Obama.
8:41 I am a die-hard Republican and I am very concerned that Mitt Romney is totally out of touch with reality and the "average" citizen. He has backed off from and/or reversed his stance on the Federal Budget. I listen to PBS .. WHY? ... because I like to learn from both side of issues. The best news organization is not FOX but BBC that reports the truth.
I think it's very naive to think Obama got his ass handed to him. He carries it everywhere he goes. I think he was incredibly savvy in the debate, letting Romney show his true colors by changing his opinion on certain topics, just for the debate. I guess we'll know next month.
Mr. Barrett, You have something going here with the blog as long as it stays on the subject. It is informative and keeps people up to date. What I don't understand is why you allow such post that has absolutely nothing to do with the blog. Let the trouble makers make their own blog sight or you make one for them. If we could stay on the subject it would really be nice.
Mitt Romney for Senate: "I believe in a woman's right to choose."
Governor Mitt Romney: "Health insurance is mandated for every person in Massachusetts."
Mitt Romney in the Republican primaries: "I will repeal Obamacare and implement a 20% tax reduction across the board."
Mitt Romney in the debate: "I have not proposed a tax cut and I support the Obamacare protections for pre-existing conditions, the coverage of adult children."
Looks to me that with flip-flops like that, Romney will win every debate!...unless of course, he debates himself.
9:32 you may be a die heart republican but you are far from a reality thinking conservative.
even the president has acknowledged, after everything else in the world was blamed, that he did poorly in the debate.
Can we get back to the topic and away from national politics. That another thread by itself.
11:19 is correct in his/her observation that obummer got his butt handed to him during the first debate - but it's located between his ears and abovr his shoulders.
Really, 10:41? Can you not read or is it that you just can comprehend what you read. It's ok, you can have a do-over. Go slowly and let the words sink in, it's a short post.
PBS is good for the little children.
Why are they always asking for money if the government is giving them so much money?
10:41 What if I use a crayon next time? Would that help?
PBS is a drain on the taxpayer that has outlived it's usefulness. With all the channels now available there is no reason there has to be a government paid channel, Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon network, Discovery, History, CSPAN and a dozen other networks can and do the job better. When there were only three networks PBS was a good idea but the money generated by Big Bird, Barney and other characters without paying anything to PBS is a
outright thief.
I fully agree with the 5:34 poster's statement.
Support the arts. You Neanderthals
not on my tax dollar. do it with your own money. that is why they have fundraisers, that is why private businesses need to quit being penalized and entitlements given to non-profits that do nothing but pay their administration huge salaries. I support the arts through purchasing tickets, paintings, books, merchandise, etc., that I choose to support. not what the government tells me to you mindless sheep.
What a shame. I thought that philosophy went out with the inquisitions of Old Spain.
Today our government gives grants to Exxon, Shell and Marathon Oil. I think their administrative salaries might be deemed huge.
Our government gives grants and tax incentives to Walmarts, Home Depots, industry and developers of all walks.
Every industrialized nation since the age of enlightenment has supported their arts and sciences with government investments. As they are indeed that...."investments"
I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Some people think that is a benefit to take from the masses to give to the few. I do not buy into that philosophy. In a capitalist society you are supposed to pay your own way and not be propped up by the government. That is what is wrong with this age of expected entitlements.
If a person wants to operate a business then borrow the money or invest your own. If an artist wants to create a work then funding should come from private funding not tax dollars. I personally do not buy into the philosophy of just because others do it then we should. I was taught that the United States is unique to all other soveriegn nations so why would we want to copy lesser models when we are supposed to be the best in the world.
In fact the Supreme Court deemed such acts Unconstitutional until the 1930's to tax the masses and give to special interests since the benefit of tax dollars are to be uniform for all citizens. Maybe you should look at the uniformity clause of the Constitution.
Maybe you should look at the federal supplements to the oil and agricultural industries.
That's the problem with this situational selfishness philosophy. Republicans insist on federal "propping up" of big business and then cry foul when people of real need get a leg up with federal assistance.
I guess you did not see the statement every one is supposed to pay their own way 9:52.
I did not see a cry of fowl for people with real needs and disabilities to get assistance. Those plans are supposed to be available to all citizens should they need it and not just ones in certain industries.
Please read the comments a little closer.
I read with a magnifying glass, my Friend, but could find no indignation of federal grants to the oil industry, agriculture interests, large box stores or developers. Just a feigned dislike for federal supplements to the arts.
I guess when it is stated that some people think it is ok to take from the masses to give to the few you read that into a feigned dislike for federal supplements to the arts. When it is stated everyone should pay their own way it means every one. Get a better magnifying glass and quit being so stupid my friend.
Nice name calling. You must be buying the wrong books or tickets to the wrong shows to develop a vocabulary like that.
There's a great example of the "arts" in Nashville at the roundabout, wonderful work of art paid for by taxpayers but so obscene it can't be shown on the news in a full close up.
Other great examples are the Crucifix submersed in a jar of urine, a picture of Mary covered with fecal matter,
This year the Nashville Film Festival got $32,200 from state and federal taxpayers to show movies such as "Meaning of Robots", a porn movie about robots having sex.
NEA's grants of over a million dollars this year went for such things "art" projects as the "Frameline" film house, which specializes in such movies as "Thundercrack", an art porno horror film staring three women and a gorilla.
PBS aired the NEA-funded "Tongues Untied" documentary celebrating black gay sex with explicitly pornographic talk and anti-religious overtones.
The ultra leftest PBS host Bill Moyers proclaimed wearing American Flag pins after 9/11 remind him of communist China.
NPR legal reporter Nina Totenberg made the public broadcast statemenmt that she was personally of America.
NPR and PBS are basically one in the same in the fact that they both are controlled and operated by the same bunch of extreme liberal America haters.
There is no legitimate reason why taxpayers should have to fund such trash and perversions. That does not mean there are no good programs on PBS or NPR it just means that if they are worthwhile they will find a way onto other airways without government funding.
What name? Friend? I repeated what you said? You need to pick up a grammar book and look to see when you name call it would be stated you are a stupid person, if that is what you infer. The way I used it was in reference to your action of writing that post. So again please quit being so stupid.
Nice.
Wow. I am convinced you are right now.
We definetly have teachers here in Giles County who are qualified to be Superintendant.
Think about the fact that the last two were brought into the county by the schoolboard and neither of them seemed to realize that this was s small county with a small amount of tax money that needed to be spent cautiously.
In the previous years our Suerintnedants were home grown, attended school here, got their degrees in some of the best schools involved in teacher education, came back here to teach and had a loyality to Giles County that cannot be instilled in someone from other, larger school districts.
I am a Retired Teacher who worked with three local superintendants and three imported superintendents. We definitely need a superintendants who has been in our treches and knows what goes on in Giles County Schools---not those who know what happens in Nashville, Limestone County or Maury Counties. Each county has its own unique problems.
Go with a local Superintendant for a smoother transition for the teachers and students, most importantly but also for someone who has a grasp of small county policies and where the cap goes on spending.
Loved the class room and showed respect for the mem who served as Superintendants while I was teaching. Although some deserved more respect than others. I held all the abilities of all the principals that I served under with the up most respect. I also realzied how lucky I was to have those principals to work with and not some of the others here in the county. Most especially I feel that was about the one who has been placed at Elkton.
Good Luck and best wishes for the new year may God lead our leaders to make the right choices for peace among the teachers and for the good of the students and the school systems.
A (rested) Retired Teacher
There is no loyalty towards this county, 8:16. Look at all the Crimson Tide promo stuff around here. When I last looked Giles County was in TENNESSEE, not Alabama. Even Vanderbilt would be better Alabama.
Hmmmmm .... just maybe if we could get all these 'Bama folks to move on over the state line into Alabama .....?
But what do you expect when so many people have to drive to Alabama for decent paying jobs?
What is interesting is the large number of people who didn't even finish high school or never even attended a college yet are fanatics about college football teams. These people know more about how many tackles someone has than where their tax dollars are going, they are more interested in how "their football" team is doing than how their child is doing in school. Why are more people at Friday night football games than at parent teacher meetings?
This matter of the superintendent is of great importance and emphasis must be placed on education instead of sports if this county is ever going to be of any benefit to anyone other than the elite that control it now.
I have continually tried to post on the blog, and have been unable to. Please post the following verbatim from, Giles concerned Citizen.
For those of you who weren't at the meeting, including you Allen, let me see if I can explain this right.
Debbie Braden was appointed the interm Director of Schools. There is no question of this. The board was choosing between 2 people. Debbie Braden and J.B. Smith. They were both asked to speak about their desires and qualifications for the job. J.B. spoke and stated that the board should give the job to Debbie Braden. Debbie Braden said she really did not want the job, but if the board wanted her to do it, she would, to the best of her abilities. As far as I know, J.B. was never offered the job as Director, nor was he promised the job if he did well. He was offered the job as Interim Director through, and was asked to put in his application to become the director. Also, I would like someone to tell me where it says, in any rule or law, that the interim director must live in the county where they are employed. Also where does it say that the Director must live in the county where they are employed, I know there are a lot of ideas and opinions about this, but I would like to know where it says in Policy, Procedure or Law, that the director, or interim Director must be residents of Giles County. I agree that they should, however, where is it written.
Now as far as hiring TSBA to do the front work for hiring a new director, TSBA has time and resources that the school board does not have. TSBA can put the job on the internet, they are in touch with other states. I would love to have someone from inside the county ie JB Smith, but, I also want the best person for the job. As good as JB is, there may be someone out there better than him. Now for researching TSBA, I found out that tehy will get applications, research the applications, have community meetings, and then forward the best applications to the School Board to interview and decide. I hate the fact that they are spending 10,000 dollars But I would hate to have a worse director than Tee.
Now as for those who think the school board is doing a bad job, do you tell your board members that? Are you in contact with them? The ones that were just voted back in, if they are doing such a bad job, and you think you can do better, why don't you run? I talk to my board member quite often I don't think he is doing a great job, but he is trying his best. Remember your board member is just one of seven.
I am having Mr. Barrett post this for me, because I am unable to get my comments to post on the blog. I am asking Mr Barrett to post this as is, verbatim, so if there are any typos, they are mine. Thank you for your time Giles Concerned Citizen
Your getting behind. Need to get to Richland and check things out. Suspensions, sex, and more going on.
I guess the faculty is just preparing the students for life in Giles County.
