What's Happening With The School Board?

Well, looks like the school board is determined to pay the Tennessee School Board Association $10,000.00  to find a new Director of Schools for them. This reportedly comes after more broken commitments to locals about the replacement.

Mrs Braden is currently serving as interim director in violation of current residency requirements. While I have no problem with Mrs Braden's ability to serve as interim director I certainly question the decision that placed her in that position while she is not a resident of this county. When she was recommended and that recommendation was challenged by another board member because she does not live in the county, Board Chairman Mike Young made the statement well, "you could throw a rock from this county to where she lives". That may be so, but unfortunately the distance is so great you can not throw a sack of property tax money from her house to this county.  Why go through that mess again when the requirements are for the director to be a resident of the county, oh well, it's just a rule.

The bigger question is why was Mr JB Smith offered the job of director with the commitment from the school board that if he did well after six months he would become the new Director? Why would the school board pay $10,000.00 of Giles County tax dollars to a Nashville group to send someone, with more connections to Nashville than to Giles County, down here to be the school director when highly qualified and proven people in the system now could do a more than adequate job? Could it be that with his long success as a principal at one of the tougher schools in the county Mr. Smith just has his priorities in the wrong place? With a history of more emphasis placed on academics than sports has Mr. Smith simply placed himself outside of consideration? It's been reported that the "coaches", one in particular, wants some one as dedicated to sports as was Mr. Jackson, that would be a huge mistake. While I love the competition of athletics I desire an educated populace much more.
It is past time for the school board and the school system to get their priorities straight and create a school system that is both disciplined and productive. I believe that much of the frustration experienced by teachers,  and in part the reason for such excessive absenteeism among teachers, is a lack of strong supportive leadership and this conflict of just what is the most important part of their job, to provide a small group of young men and women the opportunity to play ball or provide them the education they so desperately need.
I hope the School Board will reconsider this huge expense, appoint Mr. Smith with a six month probation period and if he works out give him the permanent position, if he doesn't work out then the only thing lost is some time and the process can begin again. What is the rush to make another huge mistake. Get everything in order and do it all by the rules.

If you were at the Board meeting, Mr. Smith does not want to be interim. Mr. Barrett, you are only reporting your opinion on this one and not the facts. Mr. Smith chose not to take the interim position is my take from the meeting Monday. It was his if he wanted it and he said no. And if you think others in the system are qualified then you understand you have to open the position to anyone that is interested and can't just appoint someone interim and then give them the job after 6 months. That is not fair at all. I would think you of all people would want this process to be open to anyone interested (even people outside of Giles County) so that the MOST qualified person will get the job. Just seems like you will never be satisfied with anything done by the school system since your arrest how many ever years ago that was. (By the way, I hope Mr. Smith does get the job if he choses to apply for it. Does anyone know if he is planning on applying?)

Does everyone not think that our children would be better served is out director was from Giles County. Preferably a product of the school system.

There is no way that someone unfamiliar with our schools can do a better job than someone who knows how our system works. Is this matter completely out of our hands? Such a shame.

I would hope that they hire the best person to run a school system. Someone from a better school system would be great. Giles County needs to reach for higher standards. Our children deserve the best person for the job. Assuming that someone from Giles County is best is ignorant.

Teachers are no longer respected in Giles County!!!!!! You people treat them as if they are the scum of the earth! Choose a director who will be dedicated to Academics and investing in the county and build a sense of community.

I think that some of you are confused. 8:24-a director has not been named. There will be applications taken for that position. Mrs. Debbie Braden was named as interim position, Mr. Smith made the suggestion himself that she be named since she is already familiar with the job and he did not want to leave his school on a temporary basis. Having worked for the school system for several years I can tell you that there are always people dissatified with the director of schools. You cannot make everyone happy. The local superintendents we had in the past would have been on this blog too. Parents will always think that their children are perfect and that they are being mistreated.

The school sytem is the biggest employer in Giles County and it takes a lot of money to run a business with 600+ employees. Even if there are no raises the cost to operate goes up, gas electricity, all types of insurance. The federal and state government has put a huge load on teachers, principals and administration. I know that everyone thinks that the central office has too many employees but there is more and more paper work added daily. Most of the reports are due at certain dates and there are even monetary penalties if they are late! Principals are having to do the stupid evaluations that take hundreds of hours and don't mean anything. I think that we have several qualified people in Giles County that could be great directors and we have several that will apply that will be bad, with their own agendas. I would much rather see a local person but if things don't change in the system we are going to be taken over by the state because of grades, the football program will be up a creek then because the money will be spent by the state on programs they think we need and taken from the sports program.

Sorry this got a little longer than I intended! LOL

Mr. Barrett, once again you are quoting things that you don't know. You were not at the meeting and apparently are taking the word from the grapevine. There was no promise to Mr. Smith to take the job for six months and then he could be director if he did a good job. He did not want the job as interim. As for Mrs. Braden not living in Giles County, she is not director, she is interim, 2 different things. The DIRECTOR of schools in the last contract had to live in Giles County. This is a new director and the guidelines have not been set so nothing has been done wrong. If Mrs. Braden had gotten the job of director and those were the guidelines then they would be wrong. Why bring someone in temporarily that has no idea of what is going on when she can do the job. That was Mr. Smith's suggestion just so you know.

4:50 If you would have taken the time to read what I posted as the topic you would have known that I never suggested that Mr. Smith be appointed as interim direct nor did I say he was promised the interim director.
In fact I posted clearly that everything should be done in order and by the rules, that means understanding that no one be promised anything without an open competition for the position. As you know I have been very critical of people being placed in positions without the jobs being properly posted, so it would be highly unlikely I would now suggest a person simply be given the job even if they have proven themselves.
I do oppose strongly paying the folks in Nashville anything to do what should be done by the board here. I do strongly believe that Mr Smith should be considered and that he or who ever is considered be given a trial period and the board not sign an unread contract as was done in the past then continually extend that contract in violation of state law.
As I said I have no problem with Mrs Braden being the interim, but I was disgusted with the flippant remark by the Board Chairman that you could throw a rock from this county to her house.
The collective board, certainly there were some that tried, has shown a spineless approach to dealing with the director as verified in him being given renewal contracts when he should have been fired years ago.
As for your comment about the "grapevine" I was not present at the meeting but have you never heard of an audio recording.

We paid an outside firm in Georgia to evaluate and rank the applicants applying for the Finance Director position when the Act of 1981 was being implemented. We see how that turned out now don't we?? Not only did we pay an outside and probably very knowledgeable source, we didn't consider their results as well as wasted tax dollars. I see our county elected officials haven't learned anything from the most recent debacle within the school system of "missing money" that has prompted the resignation of the current director. Be mindful it is the oversight of this school board that created the havoc that cost valuable employees of our school system their jobs and have left us all with unanswered questions as to what happened to the money. Does it make any sense at all to let them handle making such a decision considering?? Not to mention the absurdity that we have incumbents only running for school board this election. Hard to wrap your mind around the fact that people in this community stand scratching their heads why we have the problems we have in this county as we keep electing inept candidates to hold office. Wake up Giles Countians!!

Mr. Barrett, so you think that someone should take the job as a trial for six months. Now who in their right mind would quit a job to take a six months job? Of course they could already be unemployed and be glad to take a six month job but then we would have to wonder why they were unemployed in the first place. Thanks 9:27 for pointing out to Mr. Barrett what he really did say. Of course, he will twist that around to mean something else that only he can read between the lines of.

Is there a difference in being director and being interim director
as 4:50 points out?
I'm not taking sides but it seems like to me that Barrett said director not interim director in what you cut and pasted so I fail to understand what your complaint is with that statement. Is there something I'm missing somewhere else?
As for the six months trial why would a person with the confidence in their abilities be afraid they could not cut it for six months? I have had several jobs where I was on trial or probation every police/sheriff department I know of works the same way on that.

Barrett always says he has proved what he said. Of course no one else can prove anything. I have argued with him in the past and he was always right, just ask him. The board was choosing an interim director of schools so that was the only subject at the meeting, it had nothing to do with choosing Mr. Smith for a six months "trial". That is what the difference between director and interim is that is being discussed. Yes, Mr. Barrett we can read, you are not smarter than than the rest of us even though you think we are not capable of thinking for ourselves and reading your speeches.

Mr. Smith and mrs. Braden were asked to come to the work session slash called meeting to discuss the interim, yes I said interim director. Mr. Smith did not want to leave his school for six months and then apply for the job and let TSBA decline his application if they felt the urge to do so. During the six months our school board is going to spend $10,000.00 to have someone look at applications and send what they think are the best five to our board. They might send a local back or they may send back five never heard of. So why would Mr. Smith risk his position when the board won't do the processing themselves. Once again your tax dollars at work on something stupid. And obviously it doesn't seem to matter where Braden. Lives either. It doesn't say must be a stones throw from Giles county border. Suppose to live in county. I was there so argue with me. And. Don't anyone bitch Bout board members elected this go round. You should. Have run Gainst them.

Why were they choosing an interim director, isn't that what Mrs. Braden is? If they want to give her the director job, do it and forget hiring someone to help decide. Who's idea was hiring someone to help find a director anyway?

Mrs. Braden was Assistant Director. You cannot just give someone a job. There have to be advertisements and job postings. I agreee 100% on the running unapposed. If people were so unhappy they should have run or found someone they liked better to run against them. I don't blame Mr. Smith one bit for not taking the position. He was the one who suggested at the meeting that the best person for interim was Mrs. Braden since she was at the office already and knew what was going on. I don't think paying $10,000 is a good idea either. They should do the work themselves, look what has happened with the last two directors who TSBA helped with.

It's interesting that someone posted a comment about Sesame Street being "under attack" by Mitt Romney.
A poster then stated, "sesame made over a billion dollars in profits why do they need subsidizing?

Then with a good amount of sarcasm
5 Oct 12:13PM stated "a billion dollars in profits??? Wow, you might want to watch The Count a little bit more....might learn something."

Here are some things to ponder, Big Bird is richer than Romney and pays less income tax while taking 14 million a year directly from the government.
Sesame Street alone makes over 50 million a year from merchandise. They are now selling education franchises for profit in 124 different countries. The CEO Gary Knell makes over $956,000.00 a year
Sesame Street has made more than a billion dollars since it began.
The Jim Henson Company which was the parent company of Sesame Street, the Muppets, and a dozen other programs is a billion dollar company.

What an amazing week. We wait 40 years for someone to defend the conservative principles and when confronted with an opportunity to do so, Mitt Romney runs and hide.

In his primary campaign he said he was against federal funding for teachers, the estate tax, extension of Bush tak cuts, spending on green energy, extension of Medicare, and Obamacare protections against pre-existing conditions.

Now, in front of 70 million people (not just right-wing nuts) he can't defend those positions and is now FOR the hiring of more teachers, will not abolish the estate tax, will not extend Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, wants federal money spent on green energy, would restore $7 billion to Medicare, and would amend his health care plan to protect those with pre-existing conditions.

No real surprises as his positions were really indefensible.

Mitt Romney = President Obama-lite!

For the posters wondering, I call people dumbasses when I think that's what they are. I call others cowards when they choose to make personal attacks and hide behind the label of anonymous. If they really feel the way they say they do about me, they should at least sign their name. To not do so is the very definition of a coward.

Perhaps Allen should create a topic for my critics to bash me, thus leaving the topics that matter for comments that matter.I ignor as long as I can, then I respond in kind.

Mitt Romney in the Republican primaries: "I will repeal Obamacare and implement a 20% tax reduction across the board."

Mitt Romney in the debate: "I have not proposed a tax cut and I support the Obamacare protections for pre-existing conditions, the coverage of adult children."

Looks to me that with flip-flops like that, Romney will win every debate!...unless of course, he debates himself.

PBS is a drain on the taxpayer that has outlived it's usefulness. With all the channels now available there is no reason there has to be a government paid channel, Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon network, Discovery, History, CSPAN and a dozen other networks can and do the job better. When there were only three networks PBS was a good idea but the money generated by Big Bird, Barney and other characters without paying anything to PBS is a

Every industrialized nation since the age of enlightenment has supported their arts and sciences with government investments. As they are indeed that...."investments"

I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Some people think that is a benefit to take from the masses to give to the few. I do not buy into that philosophy. In a capitalist society you are supposed to pay your own way and not be propped up by the government. That is what is wrong with this age of expected entitlements.
If a person wants to operate a business then borrow the money or invest your own. If an artist wants to create a work then funding should come from private funding not tax dollars. I personally do not buy into the philosophy of just because others do it then we should. I was taught that the United States is unique to all other soveriegn nations so why would we want to copy lesser models when we are supposed to be the best in the world.
In fact the Supreme Court deemed such acts Unconstitutional until the 1930's to tax the masses and give to special interests since the benefit of tax dollars are to be uniform for all citizens. Maybe you should look at the uniformity clause of the Constitution.

There's a great example of the "arts" in Nashville at the roundabout, wonderful work of art paid for by taxpayers but so obscene it can't be shown on the news in a full close up.
Other great examples are the Crucifix submersed in a jar of urine, a picture of Mary covered with fecal matter,
This year the Nashville Film Festival got $32,200 from state and federal taxpayers to show movies such as "Meaning of Robots", a porn movie about robots having sex.

NEA's grants of over a million dollars this year went for such things "art" projects as the "Frameline" film house, which specializes in such movies as "Thundercrack", an art porno horror film staring three women and a gorilla.

PBS aired the NEA-funded "Tongues Untied" documentary celebrating black gay sex with explicitly pornographic talk and anti-religious overtones.

The ultra leftest PBS host Bill Moyers proclaimed wearing American Flag pins after 9/11 remind him of communist China.

NPR legal reporter Nina Totenberg made the public broadcast statemenmt that she was personally of America.

NPR and PBS are basically one in the same in the fact that they both are controlled and operated by the same bunch of extreme liberal America haters.
There is no legitimate reason why taxpayers should have to fund such trash and perversions. That does not mean there are no good programs on PBS or NPR it just means that if they are worthwhile they will find a way onto other airways without government funding.

We definetly have teachers here in Giles County who are qualified to be Superintendant.
Think about the fact that the last two were brought into the county by the schoolboard and neither of them seemed to realize that this was s small county with a small amount of tax money that needed to be spent cautiously.
In the previous years our Suerintnedants were home grown, attended school here, got their degrees in some of the best schools involved in teacher education, came back here to teach and had a loyality to Giles County that cannot be instilled in someone from other, larger school districts.
I am a Retired Teacher who worked with three local superintendants and three imported superintendents. We definitely need a superintendants who has been in our treches and knows what goes on in Giles County Schools---not those who know what happens in Nashville, Limestone County or Maury Counties. Each county has its own unique problems.
Go with a local Superintendant for a smoother transition for the teachers and students, most importantly but also for someone who has a grasp of small county policies and where the cap goes on spending.

Loved the class room and showed respect for the mem who served as Superintendants while I was teaching. Although some deserved more respect than others. I held all the abilities of all the principals that I served under with the up most respect. I also realzied how lucky I was to have those principals to work with and not some of the others here in the county. Most especially I feel that was about the one who has been placed at Elkton.

Good Luck and best wishes for the new year may God lead our leaders to make the right choices for peace among the teachers and for the good of the students and the school systems.

What is interesting is the large number of people who didn't even finish high school or never even attended a college yet are fanatics about college football teams. These people know more about how many tackles someone has than where their tax dollars are going, they are more interested in how "their football" team is doing than how their child is doing in school. Why are more people at Friday night football games than at parent teacher meetings?
This matter of the superintendent is of great importance and emphasis must be placed on education instead of sports if this county is ever going to be of any benefit to anyone other than the elite that control it now.

I have continually tried to post on the blog, and have been unable to. Please post the following verbatim from, Giles concerned Citizen.
For those of you who weren't at the meeting, including you Allen, let me see if I can explain this right.

Debbie Braden was appointed the interm Director of Schools. There is no question of this. The board was choosing between 2 people. Debbie Braden and J.B. Smith. They were both asked to speak about their desires and qualifications for the job. J.B. spoke and stated that the board should give the job to Debbie Braden. Debbie Braden said she really did not want the job, but if the board wanted her to do it, she would, to the best of her abilities. As far as I know, J.B. was never offered the job as Director, nor was he promised the job if he did well. He was offered the job as Interim Director through, and was asked to put in his application to become the director. Also, I would like someone to tell me where it says, in any rule or law, that the interim director must live in the county where they are employed. Also where does it say that the Director must live in the county where they are employed, I know there are a lot of ideas and opinions about this, but I would like to know where it says in Policy, Procedure or Law, that the director, or interim Director must be residents of Giles County. I agree that they should, however, where is it written.
Now as far as hiring TSBA to do the front work for hiring a new director, TSBA has time and resources that the school board does not have. TSBA can put the job on the internet, they are in touch with other states. I would love to have someone from inside the county ie JB Smith, but, I also want the best person for the job. As good as JB is, there may be someone out there better than him. Now for researching TSBA, I found out that tehy will get applications, research the applications, have community meetings, and then forward the best applications to the School Board to interview and decide. I hate the fact that they are spending 10,000 dollars But I would hate to have a worse director than Tee.
Now as for those who think the school board is doing a bad job, do you tell your board members that? Are you in contact with them? The ones that were just voted back in, if they are doing such a bad job, and you think you can do better, why don't you run? I talk to my board member quite often I don't think he is doing a great job, but he is trying his best. Remember your board member is just one of seven.

I am having Mr. Barrett post this for me, because I am unable to get my comments to post on the blog. I am asking Mr Barrett to post this as is, verbatim, so if there are any typos, they are mine. Thank you for your time Giles Concerned Citizen
