From the Budget Meeting on 10 January 2013
1. Approved a $7,.900.00 pay increase to $52,000.00 a year for the Emergency Management Director. See next threat topic for more details.
2. Approved expenditure of $86,160.00 to purchase a generator for the Emergency Management Department.
3. Turned down a request from Judge Damron for a full time secretary.
4. Approved Mrs Greene's request to spend $100,000.00 of her funds for a completely new computer/software system for the Circuit Court Office. This system will also require an annual expense of $16,000.00 for maintenance agreements which is a reduction of about $8,000.00 from the current agreement.
5. It was reported that the weight station has brought into the general fund of the county approximately $10,000.00 a month average since it opened.
6. Approval was given to spend $89,000.00 to build a new road extension at Tunnel Hill with work scheduled to begin in the spring with better weather. Several property owners were in attendance who have committed to sell the right of way for the same amounts they originally paid for the property, this was considered to be practically a gift and made the project possible.
7. Approval was given to seek an amendment that would change the wording of a private act to allow Motel/Hotel taxes to be used for all county buildings instead of just the courthouse and jail.
8. Much time was spent on an explanation of benefits to be gained from paying off an eight million dollar bond in February. After this is paid there will be approximately five million left from what was once considered the "Hospital Money". The remainder is now a part of the genera fund and considered as the fund balance.
9. The matter of what happened to the million dollars that was missing from the budget was explained. It was explained that it wasn't a million dollars it was only $975,000.00 and after several ambiguous responses to why the money was not in the budget to begin with, it was finally stated "it was an error"
One thing I'll add about this meeting. I have attended probably more meetings that most citizens and even commissioners and this was the most professional, well run meeting I have attended. Commissioner Jackson as chair, allowed questions and uninterrupted discussion of issues. Mrs Moore and her assistant provided answers to every question without having to check with the County Executive, their knowledge and openness was not only refreshing it was plain impressive. While I certainly don't agree with all that was done, I do congratulate everyone involved with this meeting.

We have an opportunity to cease discussing regarding the "Hospital Fund" in that when Vanzant spends the remaining $5,000,000.00 there will be nothing left of the original $15,000,000.00.
No money ... no further discussions.
I can't believe that there is anyone left in this count who could support JVZ. Her tenure has been disasterous.
Did I just read some compliments from barrett? I thought he opposed Beth being named finance director.
Just because she is the wife of the State Auditor who, last year, reviewed the Giles County books does not mean she is incompetent.
Is it wrong to dislike something, then think they did a good job on something?
I've read where Barrett gave someone a compliment before that he had been against.
7:30, Beth is not married much less to the state auditor. Her assitant is married to the state auditor.
There was never a question about competency of the assistant but conflict of interest. There are more people on the commission who have direct ties or jobs with the school and county than don't. This county runs on conflicts of interest.
To 9:16 you have no idea what she is capable of doing. The commissioners watch her at the meetings to see which way she is going to pucker her mouth,
vanzant is a wicked witch that will do anything to get her way. Why the commissioners fear her is beyond belief but the fact is not a single one has the balls to stand up to her.
Ask Stoney Jackson who cowered down when she jumped him in a commission meeting. Watching it on tV made me sick. She has done the same thing to other commissioners and they always back up and let her have her way.
Great---as seen an reported on WKSR, this wonderful government we have in this county, it has been "suggested" that a wheel tax could be a way to add the SRO's to our schools. No shame, they would use that horrific tragedy to get their dang tax. Yeah like they wo t divert that tax like the hospital money.
So who was the one who suggested the tax--bet I could guess with the count on one hand who it was. Yes before all start blasting, their is much sarcasm is this post- I can only hope that the suggestion was sincere an not a way to push in this subject again, an yes I do have child in this school system, so yes I am for the extra protection.
So you are for the wheel tax to pay for it?
Not at this point, nothing else presented so far, just tax.
It also mentioned that the state might fund it.
Like everything else the state might fund it the first year and then give to the school to pay after that.
When the shooting happened at Richland, was there an SRO or safety officer on duty at that time? If so, hope different would it be now from when that shooting happened? If there was an officer in place, who was that person and are they still on duty.
We trusted them with over five million in reserves and we trusted them with fifteen million of hospital funds, we trusted them with the hunter smith building and they blew it all now we are supposed to trust them with a new wheel tax. Damn fools either them or us.
There was no SRO. The SROs came after Richland.
No worry folks, the Barack Hussein Obama Monarchy has stated through Executive Order that SRO's will be funded by our bloated federal government through incentives to local communities. Gee, I wonder what those incentives will include? I bet they are more of his unconstitutional socialist agendas.
Bottom line, local communities need to take care of their own and not rely on the fed's for our protection. It all starts at the local and state levels. Just Sayin'.
I like how President Obama is apparently now a socialist monarch. That must be a first for history. Drop the crazy conspiracy talk about the president and focus on the community issues.
Thank you, 10:30. It amazes me how everybody loves to bitch and gripe without having any solutions of their own. The Anti-Obamas have already spent 4yrs complaining, they could have used some of that time trying to help the situation.
It's hardly a conspiracy theory, the facts are there, you liberals. You may buy into the King's ways, but I never will. The reasons we complain about Obama serve a purpose. That is why there are different points of view in philosophies. Yes, he is the president, but I will never buy into his agenda.
The solutions are out there folks, but nothing will get done with BO in office. The next 4 years will be a major push to continue with his fundamental transformation of our country. I hope you liberals enjoy the ride because I sure won't!
Back to what I previously stated, It all begins at the local and state levels.
It seems that nothing will get done because hard-core right wingers like yourself want nothing more than to see O fail. It's been that way since he took office and y'all ain't gonna bend on nothing he if for. That is why legislative sessions are such a joke.
Does BO consider conservative proposals? Absolutely not. He is simply too progressive. And that ain't a good thing. He will not get anything done over the next 4 years because; he too does not have any intention of reaching across the aisle. He simply issues exective orders which will fail. I do agree with your comment about legislative sessions being a joke if that is what you want to call it. I call it checks and balances.
11:07, if you'll re-read your comment and think really hard about it, you'll see at least ten things that will point to the fact that you're ignorant, ill-informed, and embarrassing yourself.
Just not seein' it, 1:58. Please enlighten me to any untruths.
Now that our state legislature has a super majority with Republican control, let us see what they will do for our county. They seem to have all the answers. Now they want to pass a voucher system that takes more money from the local education system by allowing students to attend private schools on the public dollar. BO has nothing to do with that one. It amazes me that many of our problems have not originated with the left, but with the far right. Let's call on our distinguished Congress in DC to help us. All they can do is think of antiquated measures that continue to help the wealthy.
No budget for four years; 16 trillion debt; another trillion overspent this year; More rounds of golf than any three former presidents combined; more expensive vacations than any two former presidents combined; four dead Americans in Benghazi; automatic weapons to Mexican drug dealers; Victims of Hurricane Sandy still waiting for help obama promised to cut all the red tape on; southern border erased; every close ally alienated; Middle East turned over to muslim brotherhood and other terrorist groups. Yep, sounds like a real right wing conspiracy?
Call your Republican representatives in Congress and complain to them. Sounds like a back woods red neck response with a lot of ignorance added. Victims of Hurricane Katrina still waiting too. I recall Bush being in charge and telling his FEMA director what a great job he was doing. HA!!
Yep, I remember Bush trying to cover his ass on Katrina. He filled a conference room with staff and tried to pass them off as reporters. Too sad.
Wow, still using Bush as an excuse for the incompetency of the drug using communist obama.
8:18 Funny stuff. Come out of the darkness and open your eyes.
Where in that statement about W did you see an excuse? BTW, Bush also used drugs. You probably do, yourself. It doesn't carry the stigma it once did,so try whining about something else.
Bush didn't use cocaine and crack as did obama who also sold it.
A drug is a drug, isn't it? Besides, there has always been talk about W and cocaine. Have you always led a model lifestyle, poster? Didn't think so.
Sasquatch Balls!
11:07 That is one dumb statement. Is aspirin the same as cocaine? Is meth the same as a laxative boy you reached a all time low on the intelligence pole.
Besides the cocaine didn't Bush have some DUI's?
SASQUATCH BAAALLLLLSSSSS!
Sorry professor, I should have said any drug that impairs the central nervous system is as bad as any other drug that does the same. I personally would rather meet someone on the highway who has just snorted a line of coke than someone who has downed a half pint of booze.
Did Obama get sworn in on his koran again instead of the Bible?
Just can't handle it can you 4:26. Too bad your prejudice blinds your common sense.
6:01 Let me make you a little madder: I saw on the news the woman that said the Pledge of Alligance, left "Under God" out.
I guess you think this is a
wonderful world we are living in.

Well I agree 708 that I don't support king O, but with the abrieviated comment we part ways. Hope you are deleted, yes I'd be called a racist for speaking against O, but calling anyone such an offensive word won't help anything.
Thank GOD any President does not come from this county
8:19 As someone else use to say a lot, if you don't like it leave it.
7:47 I agree with you. I hope 7:08's post will soon be removed. I understand Mr. Barrett don't look at this blog 24 7 like some thinks he should.
I was called this morning about the offensive remark made by the poster at 7:08. I plead with each poster, please you can disagree as strongly as you want but that kind of name calling is not only unacceptable it does not advance your position. I apologize that the remark was able to be publicly viewed as long as it was.
Well the good old GOP is now proposing a pay raise for congress. If this pay raise is allowed, the GOP won't block a proposed raise of the debt ceiling. Now that is what I call having the best interest of the average citizen at heart.
I guess they think that voting their pocketbook is as good as voting their conscience.
Where you been 5:01 it was obama with an executive order that increased the pay of congress and it was the republicans that rejected that increase, of course you won't read about that in the obama press and msnbc but the facts are easily checked.
The lawmakers get a raise every year unless they vote not to. This year they didn't vote not to receive the raise so they're all getting a little bump.
The executive order O signed was to end the pay freeze on federal workers.
Ray
Sorry Ray, but the repubs did vote to block the pay raise, both in the house and senate.
Mea maxima culpa, 10:18, you are most correct. I guess that's what I get for being so quick to dislike the right. I'm proud of them for making that decision.
Ray
Really, nothing about what's going on in Giles County? Nothing?
Yeah it's a catch 22, would like to hear about the goings on, but sadly nothing is ever done about the crappy stuff that goes on.
You haven't read WKSR? They have information on how to protest TVR's new permit? Anyone care that they're being sued?
I just found a comment from cg back in August of 2006 where he said he was done with this blog. 6 and 1/2 years, and he keeps coming back What a loser
1:24
Your hatred for that individual and your esteem need to prove a point prompted you to go to that much trouble? You must be insane.
Actually, I was simply perusing the archives and couldn't help but notice your style and that even then you were threatening to leave this blog.
I don't wanat you to go anywhere cg, you provide too much comic relief.
5:41
Define comic relief for we who are simply dumb Giles Countians. What an everloving crock.
Excuse me...that should be define comic relief for us. haha
5:06, your statement was grammatically correct, no need to change it.
Surely you get a chuckle out of some of cg's posts, it's ok to admit it.
You don't think the fact that cg has been threatening to leave this blog for over six years, yet never doing so is funny? You must have gotten your sense of humor shot off in the war.
Ray
Ray
Wrong. If you diagram the sentence, you will find that "You"
is understood and is also the subject. That makes "define" the verb. Think how silly that sentence would have sounded if it read "Define comic relief for we" with the remainder of that sentence being left off. Define comic relief for us would be correct grammar.
I think you're a pretty cool guy, but you missed that one. Take care.
The adverbial clause "we who are simply dumb Giles Countians makes the sentence acceptable. In that context, "those of us" could easily be substituted for we.
In any rate, it's not something you would get dinged for. Have a great day.
Ray
The county is broke and still spending but the great concern is about grammer. Who gives a crap whether you say we are about to get a wheel tax and a property tax increase or we say We'uns is about to be shafted with mo' taxes because county leaders is to weak to say no to free spending dummies.
We were having a friendly discussion until you decided to chime in, 9:59. It would have taken zero effort on your part to leave it at that, but you gotta troll around. Evidently there were at least two of us who gave a crap; if you weren't one of us, but the hell out. Thanx.
Ray
Great, that's just what that drunk-assed Dumbron needs, a freaking secretary. Gotta keep that ice bucket full.
