Legalization of Marijuana Yes or No and Why?
A reader wrote: I would like a topic discussing the legalization of marijuana, medical or otherwise. I understand this is controversial but with states making it legal I thought it would spark some lively opinions.

I would vote for it. The state needs the extra revenue. Maybe, Giles county could start to thrive if it was selling the herb legally.
I'm 100% in favor of legalization in general. Many healthcare providers also share this opinion as they are now forced to write scripts for harmful narcotics for pain control. Approximately 106,000 people died from prescription meds in the U.S. in 2013 alone. That's 290 folks a day. To date, there have been 0 deaths attributed to the use of cannabis.
I do not advocate the sell of weed on the corner to any and everyone. State stores could be set up as in the case of alcohol ( which, by the way, is many times more harmful than marijuana) and taxed in a similar fashion. The revenue created by taxes, jobs and the effectiveness of use for pain control would seem to make this a no brainer.
I suggested this topic and would like to thank Allen for posting so quickly. What are your thoughts on this matter? Good or bad, let's have it. Thanks.
I'm for it. Revenue aside, it has been proven beneficial for everything from seizures in children to easing the symptoms associated with chemotherapy. I don't see the down side.
For medical reasons only. A doctor's prescription for it. Too bad Alcohol wasn't that way.
Nixon had a study done during his administration hoping to prove the harmful effects of marijuana. When nothing negative was found, he tossed it in the trash and formed the DEA. I think Big Pharm and its lobbyist are doing all they can to keep it illegal. Can you imagine the money they'd lose if you could grow you own medicine? This should be under "farce" in Webster's.
What medical is marijuana for. Does it cure anything? Just wondering.
At the risk of making it sound like a miracle drug, which I believe it is, it is effective in treating Any Chronic Medical Symptom that Limits Major Life Activities. The list of individual problems cannabis has been proven to alleviate is far to long to post on here. Google "medical uses for marijuana" and spend a bit of time reading. World renown doctors such as Sanja Gupta herald its uses. Doctors in Israel are even using it in nursing homes where it has amazing effects on patients who were virtually catatonic before starting a cannabis regiment.
Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette.
Colorado projects their tax revenue to be right at $100 million bucks for the year. Doesn't that make more sense than funding the dea to try and stop something the people are not opposed to? When Prohibition failed to work, they threw in the towel. When is government going to see the money they are wasting on this pseudo war?

"with marijuana sales in Washington and Colorado pulling in $316 million and $802 million"
legal jobs
less plight on our crowded jails for "criminals not engaging in any violent activity"
Free up police for more serous problems like meth or violent and fraudulent crimes.
great use for farmland, no use of pesticides, ever growing demand, no dead animal pick up fees charged to the tax payers
It's a plant
just some points
Ray,
I don't like o see anyone using drugs, smoking or drinking alcoholic, but think I'm going to agree with you. It's out there all time so let's get the money from it for the county.
Two excellent posts people. Thanks for taking the time to weigh in.

It should be legal all the way around. So many good points were stated jin these comments.I would like to also add that you pay more to the courts and things when caught with weed than you do for rape. Trust me im 100% right on this. The war on this drug needs to stop. Its a plant not a drug.
