What Happened at the IDB/EDC meeting this week that required the removal of members of the public from their meeting?
What could possibly have been discussed that the public was not allowed to be involved in? Was it possibly some great legal discussion but without their attorney present what legal activities could have been discussed?
Perhaps they wanted to discuss the huge increases they have requested for their budget?
Perhaps it was to discuss the big payout from the recent lawsuit they settled? Oh, you didn't know that the lawsuit had been settled with taxpayer money maybe it because there has been nothing on the radio or in the newspaper about it. Oh, well it's only been about two weeks so maybe the news will still show up somewhere other than on this blog. No, it could have been that they would have had one of their four attorneys present to discuss that.

There is no fuss on here because Barrett was against it before he showed his true colors and decided to join it. That is what you get from him, Giles County, a guy who talks out of both sides of his mouth to try and make people believe him. If he is conservative as he states he is not for all the people. Didn't the local news sources cover the implementation of the Rep. primary? Even quoted people from the Democratic Party who were opposed to it. Didn't the local news report a Democratic party representative stated information concerning the legality of the primary. But they also reported her statements were not accurate.
I am with Barrett on this. Why did the local news, or main stream media, not report on the IDB/EDC's actions. Why not inform the taxpayers how there money is being spent.
They reported on the McAllister suit so why not this one?

What they are doing is trying to run this county to the best of their ability and with the best interests of the people in mind and in spite of those who constantly try to interfere and cause trouble. It's no wonder that some of their meetings have to be held without the public being there because of those people.

Did this happen at the April 28th, 8 a.m. meeting of the IDB, or some other time?
Do they record the minutes of those meetings? If so the meeting should be accessible and the alleged yelling, that caused the public to be shut out, should be there on the recording.
If Rackley would be so kind as to post the recording on one of the many websites he hosts for the citizens in order for them to listen would be greatly appreciated and a great service to the community.

Here's an interesting point that just occurred to me. The irony of it all is that it pretty much proves that not many people read this trash, and especially those who do not share your views. Here it is.
You know as well as I do that a deputy now attends the meetings because of those who are given to disruptions. Isn't it true that there have been at least a couple of times when you were warned that you would be escorted out of the room if you didn't stop having an outburst? That's the rumor. You talk about people (7th District candidates of course) who can't be trusted to handle taxpayer money if they can't manage their own finances. That was a low blow. Well, I would submit to you that we don't need people in office who cannot seem to handle their own emotions and behavior. Anybody can fall on hard financial times, and that doesn't make them incompetent and dishonest, but an individual who cannot control his or her temper troubles me much more.

cg You know dam well that there are no deputies in the annex where almost all the committee meet. They come to the full commission meeting because they have nothing else to do when there is no court. Four deputies sitting around with nothing to do most of the time. It's not their fault it's just a stupid system that is costing the county huge amounts of tax payer dollars every year. It's been suggested to put deputies in the room when court is in session but otherwise put them on the road.
If I was a good Christian gentleman I think i would spend less time listening to rumors and gossiping.
I know Vicki and I like her, but her bankruptcy wasn't from falling on hard times but from living beyond their means. Expensive vacations, designer clothes for their kids and more wigs, cell phones and resturant meals than Donald Trump. Even if they had fallen on hard times do you think it is the honorable thing to make others pay your debts, don't that put them in hard times. Look at Tennessee Valley and what happened to them and the people that lost their jobs because others took bankrupcy and left them holding the bag. I don’t know what Allen Barrett (That is obviously who you so cowardly refer to in your comment) does all day but I have never seen him act in anyway contrary to being a minister or Christian. I have read on here where he has referred to the “troublemakers” in history all the way from Jesus to Martin Luther King as being both troublemakers and heroes depending on which side of an issue a person happens to be. You see Mr Barrett as a trouble maker because you oppose everything he says and does. I don't need to read anything about Mrs. Vanzant's opponents to know that she has my vote and now more than ever all the support I can give her. In one post, in reference to the County Executive Race, the statement is made that “now is not the time for change”.
Over and over I hear the same people repeating this same phrase. Have you ever stopped to think what this phrase actually means? I fully agree that change for the simple sake of change isn’t necessarily very productive and I completely agree that if something is working smoothly you don’t try and fix it.
The question is do you really think that the county is working smoothly or that we are doing all the right things? Before you answer that question consider that of all the counties in Middle Tennessee and most all the counties in the state Giles County is the only one that has actually lost population. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
While surrounding counties are growing their tax base with jobs and businesses Giles County is spending over $200,000.00 a year for an industrial and business office that has done little to actually grow the county which currently has over a 10% unemployment rate and close to 20% among some ethnic groups. Is this what shouldn’t change?
Over the past eight years, while Mrs. Vanzant has been the County Executive, the county has failed to create a budget that did not use over a million dollars of reserves. The current proposed budget calls for over a million dollars more in spending than is brought in, this is in spite of the large increase in property taxes from the reassessment. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
During the past eight years the “hospital money” that was supposed to have been in a “lock box” has been spent. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
Over the past eight years the school buildings have been allowed to deteriorate to a point that some are a hazard to our children. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
The county has become known as a place where you can only get a “government” job if you know the right people or related to the right person. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
There is little to no encouragement from the county executive for new business or already established businesses. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
In the past eight years the rift between the county and the City of Pulaski has widened. Until recently there was no representation on the Airport Committee. There is no effective involvement in the EDC/IDB even though the county is contributing a huge amount of taxes to both. Is this what should not be changed?
Currently Giles County has one of the highest property tax rates in the state. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
There currently exists an atmosphere of mistrust and preferential treatment. Is that what shouldn’t be changed?
Now there you go Mr. Barrett giving people facts that for sure they will not believe. 6:57 is a perfect example. He/she just thinks Mrs. Vanzant is perfect for the job. Even though he/she could not tell you what she has done to help the county. Change is so needed in this county it is unreal.

I'm with you. This is absolutely not the time for on the job training. We need someone with experience and someone who knows how to rule the trouble makers. I'm with you buddy and I see how all these morons ask you to post one thing Vanzant has done well in her job. I understand why you do not post the long list of good things Vanzant has done while in that position and just keep attacking there worthless candidates, aka, the trouble makers. 1) Hired Loretta Garner? We know what happened there. Where is our money?
2) Hired Terry Harwell in the financial management office? No conflicts there, but he was hand picked because he was best fit for the job. Does he even have a high school education?
3) Did not allow an interview to Mrs. White. $70,000 settlement to Mrs. White who, although more qualified than others given opportunity to interview for Garner's job, was never afforded that privilege.
4) $200,000 present of taxpayer money given to the United Methodist Church in the form of the Hunter Smith building.

Perhaps you can explain to the readers what either of Mrs. Vanzant's opponents plan to do about needed revenues? I'm not advocating a wheel tax or a property tax increase per se, but there is not enough money to pay for the rising costs of doing county business. And it IS TRUE that Mrs. Vanzant asked all department heads to cut their budgets as much as possible because of this. That sounds pretty responsible to me.
Like it or not, Mrs. Vanzant is doing a good job with what she has to work with. I think you have just bought into someone else's hatred and resentment for her. That should make your cheeks burn with embarrassment.

You are right in what Mrs. Vanzant has to work with. How many of those was elected and how many did she help give the job to. She can ask until she is blue in the face for them to cut, but how does she make them do the cuts?
When the money is gone what do you do? When all but a few tax payers have gone broke, will that few pay all the taxes? Sometimes some workers have to be laid off to cut the payroll.

E-911 has 900,000 in a checking account but wants 12,000 more than last year. the ambulance company wants to spend over a million dollars more than this year during the next five years. They lose over a hundred thousand a year from poor management and want more more more.
Stop talking about cutting and finally do something about it. The county will get several hundred thousand more this year than last from property taxes but it still ain't enough. The problem ain't income it's spending stupid.
Instead of asking .... Vanzant should demand cuts; or, establish all the cuts herself. Her budget has gone up.

A different question that should be asked is why the TDB/EDC is asking for and additional 35 thousand dollars to hire a person to duplicate what the Chamber of Commerce does? This over two hundred thousand dollar a year expense must be severely trimmed if not eliminated from the budget.

As for Mr. Hughes, I have absolutely nothing personal against the man. In fact, I think he may have had a legitimate gripe. But what I did say is that I would most likely have been more harsh than Terry was had my wife asked me to defend her honor. Mr. Hughes has nothing to do with that.

This blog reminds me of The Matrix, the only problem is the powers of the equal reactions in The Matrix are equal idiots with Barrett and CG. I would hate to know that I was either of them carrying such stupidity to my grave.
Barrett is such a moron and a known troublemaker in the county, most people don't give him the time of day. CG knows this, yet he makes himself look like a fool for fighting a fight against a fool that has already been won.

CG did put doubt in people's mind about the two men running against Mrs. Vanzant. I don't know the two men and haven't made up my mind one to vote for. I worked for Mrs. Vanzant in the past, but if her friends are like the one posting on the blog as a Christian, I've lost faith in her.
I really think if she don't get him to stop the drama she will loose this election. I've been hearing a lot of talk like that.

Jim Greene is a school board member and Melissa Greene is a commissioner. Is Melissa, Jim's daughter or daughter-in-law?
Melissa is Jim's wife. Part of the problem is that so many people don't know what a small group of families control this county. Almost every elected official has family or very close friend in a county/city office. Now we may end up with the commission controlled by people with direct ties to the school system and if they get elected you'll see the school budget shoot through the moon.
County cronyism at work.
Any county with a great school system does have a great budget. Great schools draw people into the community. Look at Williamson County. Most of the people moving into the area are there for the schools.
Smart people want to pay for children's educations. That is a good place for tax dollars to go. I also noticed your roads are terrible in Giles County. It may be time to start paying some taxes to have them repaired as well.
Giles County is being a little too conservative right now, and it is holding you guys back. Barrett and his buddies will continue to hold you back. Elect some commissioners that know where money is best spent for the betterment of the county.
I noticed Mrs. Vanzant's niece, Joy McMasters doesn't have an opponent.

Knowing where money is best spent for the betterment of the county is a good idea. That is the trouble they are spending a lot in the wrong place. What ever happen to the missing school money? That hurt the school being funded and is why so many complaints about schools. Jackson really messed up the school problem. If it hadn't been for him I don't think we would ever have had the Finance Department.

The schools in Williamson County are there because of the incredibly high tax base enjoyed by Williamson County. Are you aware that Giles County is one of the very few counties in the state that continues to lose population year after year? Our property tax rate is among the highest in the state.
If you think I am interested in holding the county back you haven't been paying attention, it's Commissioner Campbell that has said "we're done things the same way for 200 years why change now" and it Commissioners Harwell and Coleman who have voted in support of such backward thinking. Yes, I know they are in the 7th District and there are several in other districts that have supported such non-development. I support borrowing the money to fix the school buildings and offered a way to do that with out a tax increase or a wheel tax.
Here is were I believe a real problem exist between me and a number of commissioners and other candidates, I believe it is the job of a commissioner to represent the people not be a representative of the county. By that I mean you can not represent the people if you never try to understand what it is they want, not just you telling them what is best for them. I keep hearing commissioners say well, the cost has gone up on this and that so we need a wheel tax and a property tax and they fail to consider that the cost has also gone up on the individual, living on a fixed income who is trying to buy food, pay utilities, buy medicines and clothes and put gas in their vehicles so they can get to the doctor or some other place. Of course there are certain things that need a great deal of attention such as schools, law enforcement, highways, etc but do we really need to spend $200,000.00 a year on a failed Economic Development office? Do we really need to us taxpayer money to pick up dead cows from some farmer who could easily afford a disposal fee? Is it reasonable to pay all the increase in medical insurance for county employees (6% last year) then be told they haven't had a raise in three years, especially when the majority of county workers are earning more for fewer hours than most taxpayers working in a factory?
Yes, taxes are necessary but our problem isn't with getting taxes but with spending far more than we have on low priority items.
As a commissioner I will have town hall type meetings before every Legislative Body Meeting to determine what the people think about the issues to be voted on.
Excellent post, Allen. All too often those elected forget they are no smarter than the citizens who voted them in. They are there to REPRESENT US and not their own agenda. It seems many forget this little fact once elected. That's not just in our small town but from the federal government all the way down. After the elections are over, we never seem to be smart enough to know what is best for us. That, my friends, is a crying shame.

I would add, to Mr. Barrett's comment, that Williamson County is not a retirement community where the people are living on fixed incomes. They have one of the highest per capita incomes in the whole state while Giles County hardly registers on that scale.
i like the idea of town hall meetings where the people can talk, I have tried numerous times to contact my commissioners they will not answer their phones and they will not return a call. By the way I live in the 7th District and I'm not bashing the commissioners just stating my experience with them.
I also agree with Mr. Barrett and Mr. Lanier the people are not being represented because we are never asked about what we want. One thing I don't understand is why a business is having their refuse carried off at taxpayer expense. Frito Lay has to pay to get their waste products removed so why don't the cattle farmer who is already getting big tax breaks have to pay to have his dead animals removed? Well that's my rant for the day.

When have you been denied the opportunity to post? Your attitude is just like the socialist president that wants equal outcomes not equal opportunity. The reaction to some of your more asinine comments have been far milder on this blog than they would have had you spoken them in a face to face confrontation. What this blog is for is the dissemination of information and discussion of topics. Those who have tried to use gossip, misinformation and plain out lies have been confronted and challenged just as they would in any other forum, the only difference is the frustration experienced from those cowardly liars that post anonymously.
Yes I would say this blog is a radical departure from the no information available that has been the norm. I appreciate that under the guidance of Mr. Stewart the radio station is doing a much better job than in the past. If you think for one minute that you are fooling anyone or that your identity isn't known, you are even more foolish that you appear. You really should watch your step; sooner of later someone is going to have enough and reveal who you are so the public can confront you. If you speak in public the way you post, it will be sooner rather than later.
Barrett , you state the "failed economic development commission'". Please state in detail why you think it has failed! The state has just released it's unemployment rates for April. 6,2% vs 7.4% for March! Please tell us how you as a commissioner can improve EDC.

What I mean by "failed economic development commission" is just what I said. I believe that any System or Commission that cost more than it provides needs to be readjusted or done away with. I don't think the EDC/IDB should be done away with completely but some major things do need to be changed. More than $200,000.00 dollars a year not counting the tens of thousands being paid out for spec. buildings.
While there have been some successes the expense, the special privileges and treatment, the appointments, the abuses, the lawsuits, the unaccountability, etc have all been huge sore spots. When a chairman declares that giving a free meal to members is necessary so they will attend meetings you have a failed system. I'm sure there are some that take the position very seriously and would attend regardless of the meal but it was stated so it is what it is.
Looks like some attend just for the meal. What a shame.
Here is another example of cg's hypocrisy concerning threats to posters on this blog. Apparently, once again, it's ok for him to act in a manner which he condemns others for. This comment was from the topic "Exclusive Report on Commission Meeting" dated 1/14/2007.
