What Happened With The School Director?
It seems some have become very critical of my views or lack of criticism of Mr. Smith as School Director. I haven't written much because of the holidays and being very busy with other things.
So let me be very clear about my thoughts on Mr. Smith.
Mr. Smith was wrong in what he did and he has admitted it. I was very disappointed but one mistake is not a pattern, unlike what was tolerated from Mr. Jackson. So the bottom line, for me at least, is that what he did was wrong and not done alone. I believe that Mr. Smith understands what he did was wrong and that he will not make that mistake again. He also knows that there are many watching him with the sole purpose of removing him as Director. I believe this was a learning experience and Mr. Smith will recover from this and continue as a good Director.
So let me be very clear about my thoughts on Mr. Smith.

I am afraid that even if he doesn't make another mistake he will be ousted if several have their way. Maybe no one will apply against him. He will make a difference you wait and see.
Mr. Smith is an excellent Director of Schools. A model disciplinarian with the local commitment we have sorely needed. Bridgeforth Middle School is a shining star in an otherwise lackluster system. I have every confidence he will lift the standing of all the other schools if given the opportunity.
Give me a break a mistake is doing something without knowledge you cant convince me that he didnt know what he was doing he knew and did it anyway we need a new director.

Why is it okay for Mr. Smith to make a "mistake" and not okay for anyone that Mr. Barrett dislikes to make one? Mr. Barrett said this was Mr. Smith's first mistake, not a pattern, if that's the case, why would the commission have been trying to "teach him a lesson"? I'm sure the teachers love him, he's giving them everything they want. The budget doesn't matter to him and it never will.

If someone in his position does not know and understand the law then he should not be there if counsel members knowingly side step the law then yes they should be gone as well but there is never any actions taken when this happens that is why the leadership here does things shady because they can and yes teachers love him because he is catering to them not raising a standard. 70 days or even 10 days missing work is unethical abuse they only work half a year 9 to 3:30 out all summer your paid to be there to teach so be there smith is not a leader

Baddour wanted speed bumps on his street and told the other Aldermen everyone on the street agreed when he did not ask me. When a tree was under a power line outside his office was being removed he thru a temper tantrum to get it replaced. When he was sworn in he had to abide by State and Federal laws but he says NO!!

Option means choice for your benefit. At least the school teachers are working a full 40 hour week and more while the courthouse employees only work 36 hours and less each week while being paid for forty hours. The absenteeism among teachers is appalling and costing the county several hundred thousand each year for substitutes.
7:30 to 3:30 are the hours a teacher works if they are there for the pay. A good teacher works many more hours making sure they have covered every avenue to make sure they can teach to every child in their style of learning. Yes a teacher has the option of during the school year or the whole year for pay. Either way their pay is the same come tax filing time. If you are not an educator then you need to follow in the footsteps of a teacher for one day. I could list numerous things that would blow your mind that a teacher has to do. Have you ever worked with a child whose scalp is crawling because of lice, or one who comes in all beaten up and you later learn Dad beat the hell out of them and Mom, too. How many students get food only at school cause Dad needs beer or pot worse. How about a child having a learning disability an know one ever noticed until the right teacher comes along. And have you ever had a student say I want to learn and be good but I just can't. You find out they are a drug baby. Folks there's more to teaching than 7:30-3:30. It goes home with you more than you know. So if teachers got pay by mistake, By Golly they didn't get enough.
I measure Mr. Smith by nearly 30 flawless years at Bridgeforth. There has never been any doubt that he kept the students (and teachers) in line there. The state scores further lend testament to his success there.
The local heroes with a proven dedication to the LOCAL system should be the ones running it. Not some out of towner who may present nice credentials, but untested or unrevealed pasts.

I said nothing about the amount of the teachers pay only that they have a choice of how they get it. Yes to all of these questions.I have worked hard labor with a lot less pay and was thankful to have a job.I have worked in extreme heat cold and rain without missing work. I value educators what I am saying is stop complaining about your job if you are not happy go do something else.I went to college I have an education to better myself for my family.I do not miss 10 days of work or 70 its called work ethics. It is funny that we have had Commissioners attack citizens at public events and then be awarded a job he did not have the qualifications and actually failed the vote by the commissioners to be included in the budget but was by the power of the county executive.
We have a council member who filed a police report and began a victim blaming campaign in the community and the citizens awarded her by re-electing her to office.
We have a city council who willfully violates laws and ordinances on a regular bases.
We have commissioners and the county executive conspiring to defraud the public.
All of this is very well known and very public but no one seems to care. And many citizens enable the behavior with their support of these who care nothing in fulfilling their oath of office..
For instance at present Baddour is attempting to find ways to go around the law as opposed to abiding by the law and that is having the "intelligence and the fortitude to challenge the status". Did the council not learn from their blatant violation of state and federal law in their arrogance in passing a pseudo-ephedrine ordinance because it was what they wanted, not what was right for the people and under the law.
I wonder why the attitude towards Mr. Smith by members in the community is not same as it was towards those who willfully engage in criminal activity and still serve in their positions?
And didn't some commissioners still approve the budget request of Mr. Smith when others were attempting to send messages with there actions. Why is their no outcry about these commissioners?
Yeah, Giles County has set the precedent in the way it likes to handle its business. Why should we change now, after all we have done it the same for 200 years. And we know what organization was created during those 200 years.
All I can say is that you must live a miserable life!

**the previous directors always had difficulties with Mr Smith. Most of the problems came from his positions in regard to discipline.
**there was a very well timed rumor that Dr Webb was returning as director.
** Does the community know one of the first things he did as interim was replace all locks at the central office? Paranoid??
**Is anyone aware of the significance of that new secretary position he created.
**Does the community know how much principal raises were and who received the most?
**why would a man who knows the position is interim eliminate the asst principal position at BMS?
**what has happened to the money and the plan to repair the school building bathrooms at the rate of one per year?
**Mr Smith willfully and knowingly proceeded we with roof repairs on GCHS knowing the board had instructed him not to do so.
**were people given reimbursement for funds they thought had been taken from them by Dr Webb. Did these funds come from Mr Smith and did he include himself in that reimbursement?
**was he planning to sue the county before he became interim?
**Mr Smith willfully and knowingly violated the county plan for incentive pay.
**the board meeting last week was an orchestrated assault on the board members..occupancy was calculated, people arrived as early as 3:15 to fill to occupancy and chairs were reserved for supporters. Voters and taxpayers left out of the loop were literally left in the cold, surprised and appalled.
**a member of the cult theatened the chairman of the board prior to the start of the meeting..shameful
**a Facebook page has been created with that ridiculous phrase to Be Somebody. Embarrassing to our entire system.

**teachers are being asked by GCEA members to sign petitions in support of Mr Smith, this is happening during the school day and on school grounds. If the refuse to sign or vote no, they are then asked to explain why.. union intimidation.
The loud minority being mistaken for the quiet majority. Please stand up for what is right for our community and students. This man may have been successful as principal, but that was because his superintendents and directors chose not to embarrass the county by exposing his infractions. While I am not an educator, I have friends and family who are and I am horrified at the lengths this man and his followers are willing to go. The school board needs to know they have support in the community which will allow them to do the right thing.

No, see, the point is that the people who are supporting Mr. Smith are loud and obnoxious with their support, but still are the minority. The opposers are just slightly more sensible and not so obnoxious. Makes the supporters think they are the majority.

I do not work for the government either at a federal, city, county or school board. I need you to explain to me when you say that teachers work a 40 hour week 7:30 to 3:30pm each day. If I count 7:30 to 3:30 is 8 hours…SO, 8 x 5 = 40 hour. However by state and federal law, people are required to take a lunch break and or break. I don’t know about the teaching profession but in my line of work people are not typically paid for breaks. So, 7:30 to 3:30 (- min lunch or planning period a day) = 37.5 hours a week (max). I may be missing something, but felt it my social responsibility to point that out.

8:23, your fine folks at FM that pay your salary every month, do not have the authority to deny paying something that the director of schools signed off on. They can only express their concern to said director, if he signs his name and says pay it, they have to pay it.
My husband works at a factory from 7-3. He is paid for a 8 hour day. He gets a 30 minute lunch and 2 15 minute breaks. So he works 7 hours and is paid for 8. What is the difference. Also, how many of those teachers really quit working at 3:30, they take their work home, stay at school waiting on parents to come to school to pick up the kids, are there for staff meetings after work, parent meetings, open house, fairs and many more things. I thank God for my children's teachers who took care of my child while they were in their care. Thanks Giles County teachers for all of your hard work!

I know years ago the school system was allowed 2 personal days a year and one sick day a month. It's hard to take something away that was given. Some teacher didn't take a sick day unless they just had to. Then the days built up for a bad sickness or extras time one retirement. I admire anyone that would put up with some of these children today. Most are good, but some just aren't taught to behave at home.

All make mistakes, and some do know how to carry themselves and learn by them and admit them. Since it is the new year, why don't you give us a recap of 2014 on your blog in the format of a scorecard. For instance, tell us now many people you attacked on here and how many people you accused of wrongdoings vs. how many successes you had with these people. By success I mean something actually happened to them, like they were ousted, removed from their position, jailed, etc. Simply accusing someone of something and there was nothing done by authorities is a loss for you. A couple of months ago the Citizen wrote that an Alderman wanted to know who started the law suite with the spec building. Was it the IDB or the EDC, Was it answered or not?
Nothing was done, the board suggested the idb/edc investigate it themselves, and the issue was dropped.

Is it true that Mr. J.B.Smith has promised, if appointed as School Director, he will close Richland High School? Has anyone else heard this? I hope he would not do this.
If Giles County High is overcrowded already, how would you add the population of Richland to it? I do not believe he said that and I believe that would take the support of the school board to accomplish that.

That is not true about closing Richland and yes, it would take the State School Board of Education to close a public school. Mr. Smith cares about Giles County and no matter what school it is, I feel he will try his best to help all!

It's not propaganda. People have talked about this for years. Everybody wants to shut down Richland, it won't happen because you would also have to shut down GCHS and build an entirely new high school to fit everybody in. There isn't enough money in Giles Co to do that. And Mr. Smith can't do it on his own. There has also been talk about closing Elkton and sending those students to Minor Hill. Whether that's a rumor or not, I do not know. But you'll never get the entire truth from anybody. From what I can see, the people that are against Mr. Smith can say whatever they want to, his supporters will say that's just a rumor. There's nothing to prove. The board has a job to do and we should all let them do it since we did elect them in the first place.

It is very easy for someone anonymous to judge others. I have always been for the teachers and the kids. That is what it is all about!! Our children! It is a hard job and I respect all that have the courage to teach and even be on the board. Mr. Smith knows Giles County and cares for Giles County. Dr. Webb's drinking was no secret in the school system. Ask any of the principals or anyone that he worked closely with. Yes, he has been in treatment since his resignation so I hope if you ask he would now tell the truth. I pray that he will stay sober and be a good husband and father to his stepson. 3:54 PM, probably came from the phone. which I would think would be against school policy too but you would have to fire the whole school systems in America. People had nothing against Webb, but people know Mr. Smith. That is all some are trying to say. I really do not care one way or the other because I have no kids in the system anymore, but if people would think of the kids, the world would be so much better, but a lot forget what it is all for. He was never presented with anything that he could've been fired for. If an employee has a drinking problem, by law they are supposed to be able to receive treatment. He was bullied out of a job because the board asked him to do some things and make some changes until they wanted to get re-elected. I was and still am very close with him. He's a good person. I'm sure Mr. Smith is a good person too, but he was put into a job as interim. It is now up to the board to do their jobs. If you don't like the way they do their job, vote them out in four years. But all this bullying the board members with ugly messages on their phones sounds like a bunch of children who only want things done right if it's beneficial to them.
I have to agree on how Webb was treated. He should have fought back. we all have problems in some way, If it were me I would fight back. Most of that board is gone. The board was elected by the people. They are one voice for all the people in their district. They should respect the majority of the wishes. If District 1 has 550 to keep and 560 to let go then that member should vote for the majority. and vice versa. That's my thinking

Well the sad part about it, the voters that are whining about it probably did not even vote. But a lot would really be surprised on who wants what. And you are right, if they make the choice on behalf of the people and not their own personal feelings, then they are making the decision they feel is right. If you think the school board member are concerned about the people they represent you missed the boat a long time ago. The only time they are concerned about the people is at election time just like the commissioners. Why do you think they never have community meetings and allow people to talk to them, most don't even answer their phones or return calls. Why do you think the school board has meetings in a room to small for a crowd instead of at a school gym when there is a hot topic? Why some are very interested in what the people think and want most don't care at all. Webb resigned because of pressure from one person even the other board members didn't now what had happened.

I don't remember how much money was suppose to come up missing under Jackson, but that's the only director I remember hearing of money missing. I thought some of it was found by paying someone which shouldn't of been paid. Did we not have the Finance Department then which was suppose to catch things like that? Or maybe they weren't suppose to catch it.

Thank you for supporting our teachers. Like you pointed out, most of them spend more time in their classrooms than they do at their own homes. They spend their summers in those classrooms getting ready for the 18-20 young minds that will be coming in August. That's not counting all the trainings, meetings, and seminars (counted as inservice which means that is counted in as their salary) they attend during the summer to make sure they know the most current common core standards. As for those days missed (which were maybe 70 for their entire teaching career), those teachers have kids who get sick, deaths in the family, or were sick themselves from the multiple coughs and sneezes that they take to the face daily because kids are being sent to school sick.

I speak for others in Giles County... teachers, parents and most of all our children. A lot of people in Giles County support Mr. Smith. Sure, some don't but that is their opinion as we have the right to have.
Mr. Smith is a good man and cares about Giles County. Not saying any other in the past has not, but today is a different day and this is for our kid's tomorrow. Mr. Smith has been in education a long time. Sure he has made mistakes as we all do. It is the board's decision and as long as they make the decision for the right reasons no matter which way it goes, they have to live with their decision as we do also. We will have to respect that decision. We just feel that Mr. Smith should be given that chance. Has been passed over several times, so some though it was time for Giles County to show who they would like over Giles County Director of Schools. As a resident of Giles County void of school age dependents I charge the school board members to uphold the highest standards of operation in sustaining, promoting continuity, and striving for advancement of education values across the entire system. I deem them responsible for the leadership of said system. Expectations of acquiring impeccable leadership to advance the task of providing educational value to the children of Giles County completes my stance.
I offer the following as fact removed from contestable debate;
The elected school board members are charged with selecting the highest qualified individual to accept the position of Director of Schools. Their actions to date remain qualified and orderly regarding procedure and acquisition of the desired intention to identify the candidate holding the highest resume of accomplishment and experience. The measure of personal fondness gained through affiliation with any candidate becomes invalid. I applaud their due diligence in creating competition in order to review and select the highest qualified submitter.
The actions of you and “others” in Giles County that you speak for promotes arse about face in its finest. Cart before the horse in American terms if you will allow. Publicly and private you campaign for a candidate while bearing no known knowledge as to the promoted candidate actually being the most qualified to assume the leadership of our schools. When you can pen the attributes that Mr. Smith brings to the platform distinguishing his acquired credentials as superior to candidates #2, #3, & #4 will I even consider your stance. I will await your response critiquing the qualifications of submitters #2, #3, & #4.

Is that true we get to see applicants? Cannot hurt supporting mr smith because, he is not an elected official, but the school board is. People never bothered before because I guess we trusted the good ole board, but see where that got them. Cant hurt to try.
While the law requires a thing does not mean that is what people do. Private meetings of board members at Lovell's cabin and other places are not legal but take place. The way Webb was fired was 100% against policy and law but when has Giles County bothered to follow the law when it got in their way? Having "work sessions" in out of the way places is illegal but with no one to enforce the law, so what? Those that have voiced objections to the way things are done are immediately attacked as nut jobs and trouble makers so people don't bother and the results are disgusting.
Think this time around, more are involved and a different ball game no matter what the decision! I would not under estimate Giles County! I attended my first board meeting last night and sat at the back of the venue. While I am not a native Giles Countian I feel that my home is here in Pulaski. What I witnessed last night was pure embarrassment for the school board. I watched the body language of every school board member and was appalled. Please watch yourself on channel 3. First of all, Ms. McMasters made a complete fool of herself and unfortunately reduced her credibility as an effective board member! On the other hand, Ms. Turner - all I can say is BRAVO! You were the only one with a respectable approach to the issue and the tone of your voice was very professional. Please teach a course to the other members. I greatly understand the need for better facilities. However, I would much rather have my child taught in a barn with teachers that are inspired and respected instead of being miserable...this is passed down to our children. Mr. Smith clearly has turned the teachers, students and parents around. With Mr. Smith as Director, he could easily make a request to the community to volunteer on projects that are needed in all of our schools. Parents and students would gladly complete the tasks requested. I find it ironic that the board desperately needed him to clean up the devastation that Dr. Webb created and he did it quickly. I know there are issues with money...but what he did worked for the better of Giles County. To blow this up a major issue shows that the board is grasping for straws. As every individual in this county and worldwide have baggage (including the board members), very few have learned from their past aggresions and made a difference. One exception...J.B. Smith! He has never hid behind his past and makes a point to educate our students and our community that learning from your mistakes can be turned into a positive outcome. Honestly, the students do not give a darn about his past but they are concerned about today and the future. It is so sad that several of our board members (as demonstrated last night) cannot move forward and represent the families in their district. Having a personal agenda should require several board members to abstain or remove themselves from the board...this is not about you seeking revenge. I was appalled at the board when several individuals were speaking. Mr. Williamson couldn't keep his hands off his ipad and was very disrespectful to the audience. Please go back and read Roberts Rules to learn how to effective chair a committee. At the end of the meeting, I continued to sit and watch. A packet was handed to each board member, some rolling their eyes but the most inappropriate action was Mr. Holt holding his hand up in front of this individual refusing to accept the packet. As I was leaving the auditorium, I overheard Mr. Holt stating that this was his revenge. Not the place to make this statement in front of our community. How sad for our community. On a bright note, this board has the great opportunity to turn this situation into a diamond in the rough. The community (who elected our board members) clearly supports Mr. Smith. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the community, the board members and Mr. Smith partnered and actually made a difference in our education. That would be a first since I have moved to Giles County. This would clearly demonstrate that the board can do the right thing instead carrying a grudge. That is not something I want my child to witness and how do you explain this to our students who clearly want Mr. Smith as their leader.

I find it interesting that Ms. McMasters has a problem with someone signing her in to a meeting that she attended but has no problem with her relative Mrs Vanzant signing a commissioner in and demanding that the commissioner be paid when she knew the commissioner did not attend the meeting.

JB Smith is called Dr. Smith for he has been awarded a PhD. Hence a Doctoral Degree.

Dont think they will need signatures. Too many witnesses last night from what I hear. Giles County is a big county but people see. The person that said way above bout lazy asses, the ones that bitch about everything do not have the courage to even stand up for what they believe in. I may not agree about all what they are talking about or doing but i respect them. and the board can try to find fault with Mr Smith but sure hope they are walking the straight line because it works both ways

They have had people with PHDs etc. and look where they are now. Only a piece of paper but when someone is, well will not stoop to other's levels. Whether he is a doctor or not, he probably would not be one to MAKE someone call him Dr.I have worked with one like that already. But some people in life although they have earned it, they need that status for their self esteem.

I agree, Pam Ryland is such a wonderful voice for parents and teachers of this community. It is people like her whom help make sure that those often un-heard voices get heard.
I think Ms Rylan needs to calm down a little about this issue. Taking a stance on this controversial issue could hurt Wal-Greens business since I've heard she's the manager's wife.

You people are jumping on the JBBandwagon and you dont even know who the other applicants are. They may be more qualified and better than J B and you have already committed your vote. That isn't good. JB IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE but he could possibly not be the best choice. Don't commit too quickly. Did each of you marry the first choice you made for a mate?. If you did you know nothing of the other "fish in the sea". You were blinded by lust and immature thinking. Think about. There may be some issues that have not come out yet that could change your support of your choice for Director. Be careful. Dont run your mouth too soon. You could be seen as a fool by others who dont jump quickly.

As far as for Walgreens, people choose where they want to shop. People come and go for many reasons. Keith and I never treat people differently when they tell us why they do not deal with Walgreens. Walgreens is a corporation and anonymous letters and considering the circumstances, do not think it would go too far with them. Just like the other offices in the county getting letters, but no one signs it.
People at least know where we stand. Do they agree? Maybe not. Their choice.
If you feel that it is the right thing, so be it. But we have always been a part of my son's education and care for the teachers and the school system. We do try to do the right things.

2:46, it is not about a vote. We have voted. We voted for the school board. Yes there may be others that are qualified which others were in the past.
No regrets here, because many others feel the same way. All may not say it, because people are afraid and how sad is that if people cannot even talk to someone that we chose to talk for us. They all have a decision and we all will have to live with it.
And you are right, some really need to be very very careful!! Lived here all of my life and after attending that board meeting, if you feel that was right, then it is a sad sad world we live in. I am an educator in this county. Same things are still happening since I was a little girl here and will never change. It is really shameful.

You seem to forget the board was going to boot him out in january. Can't blame people for being pissed off.
I don't shop at Walgreens but it isn't because of Rylan it is because Jerry Bryant is working there.. If he can't handle money how can he handle pills.
JB Smith may or may not be the very best choice for School Director; and, I support acquiring the very best candidate possible.
However, the actions and attitude displayed by Bill Holt speaks volumes about how prejudice he is. Just because his wife left him, because of an abusive relationship, and then decided to marry JB Smith should not affect his role or decision making ability as a School Board member. Bill Holt has stated very publicly that his ran for his current position to get back at JB Smith. After last weeks meeting he reiterated this position to many in the audience. He has a personal conflict of interest and will do whatever he can to make Dr. Smith's life miserable.
Bill Holt is proving to everyone that he is a total and complete ass. Yup! he is most definitely a self-made man.
JB might as well get ready to pack his bags because this board is not going to let him stay. They would put Little, Jackson or Webb back in knowing how crappy they were just to have him gone. Go around the table and look at each ones personality or upbringing. Vanzant will control McMasters, Lovell will support Richland and he is of the old school, Williamson will follow suit on votes, Brewer's Dad was at Bridgeforth during Holt and Smith altercations, Bill can't move on and will tell everyone he is for JB and tell a bold face lie to get him out and Glover hasn't got enough since to vote. So that leaves Turner in his corner. Even if there isn't another applicant they will try to get him out. This board is a sad group,. Keep it up citizens and speak out and then make sure the day of narrowing down let your board member know it's not their vote they are making it's yours. They are one voice on behave of many. And if Bill is any kind of a decent man he will suck it up and realize JB is the man for the job. It's his children and grandchildren's family he is going against.
7:58, Bill Holt was running for that position before anything even happened with Dr. Webb and Mr. Smith was put in office. So he obviously couldn't have been running with a personal vendetta against Mr. Smith as school board director.
I could tell you a thousand stories on Mr. Holt. He came across as a pretty good fellow back in his day. After getting to know him, it was a huge let down. With the choice in election being either Jerry Bryant or Bill Holt, we knew that we were not going to get decent representation. I'll just leave it at that.
JB might not get it but got a feeling some others will not be on there too
