Will The Sheep Avoid A Major Fleecing?

T'was a simply amazing article in this week's newspaper about the School Director not liking the idea of having the people decide if they want to go into debt for over sixty million dollars. It seems that the highest ranking non-elected person holding a government position in the county, Mr. Wright, doesn't like the idea of having the people decide their fate. It's bad enough that the school system leadership either got the wrong information about the proposed referendum or else they just chose to ignore the facts for a more flamboyant attack against the County Commissioners but to come out and just plain say that the citizens of Giles County shouldn't be allowed to vote on the issue because they would vote the wrong way is just plain arrogance personified. Maybe that's the reason the citizens can't vote for the position of School Director, no that can't be the reason because we didn't have much of a problem with School Directors until they started being appointed. Seems after a long line of bad to terrible appointments the citizens voting didn't seem to be so bad. It seems to me that having the citizens decide whether to have a future burdened with an incredible debt, the most debt ever held against the citizens of Giles County, or to continue enjoying the benefits of being debt free for as long as possible would be a no brainer. The problem is if the citizens decide for themselves that means the loss of power over that citizenry. The very idea of losing control of the citizenry is terrifying to some, it's OK to allow the appearance of citizens in charge but in reality they should never be allowed to decide important things that will impact their financial lives for decades to come. Oh, by the way has anyone actually seen the non-partisan, independent study that says we even need a new school? Of course not because there is none. All there is, is a bunch of arrogant administrators and Board Members so full of what they want and so used to herding the sheep into a corner of silence, and taking what they want while whining "It's for the children" they simply forgot that even sheep raise a ruckus when you take away their food and believe me the tax increases that will accompany this unnecessary building boondoggle will take the food off of a lot of tables.

The director doesn't care what the people want, he is in charge with an arrogant board. How dare they feel that the public should not be allowed to determine a debt placed on them for years to come.
Thanks for keeping the public abreast of these hidden agendas by an unscrupulous director and selfish board.

Will a better school enable the young people to learn better? I don't know, but seems they need all the help they can get. Many of the graduate without being able to speak english as well as an immigrant.

I would be for it, if I KNEW it would help, and if it could be paid over a long period of time.

Maybe they can refurbish the schools instead of building new, and/or add auxiliary classroom buildings on current campuses. Maybe they expect a huge population boom?

I like older buildings, if they are properly maintained.
Maybe the county just let these schools all decay? I don't know.

You can better well bet that the intent is to somehow improve the football program. Our leaders don't care about education, and they don't care about the other sports or extra curricular activities. Our boneheads only care about football.

Our educators will forever miss the opportunity to have JB as their permanent Director. I hope that our school board members (and the others working behind the scenes) at time recognizes how bad of a mistake that they made.

I've heard Giles county School has roaches and is dirty, we need a new building. How long will it be with a new building before it has roaches and is dirty? If it has roaches, the day school is out for summer give it a good spraying, good cleaning, and painting. Not enough money has been used to keep these building in good repair. Money hasn't been appropriated for this. The government has stopped punishment to students that destroy school property, even if it just throwing paper on the floor or school grounds.

No, the increases in population has not increased enough to even come close to justifying the building program that is being pushed by the school system, that is why there has been NO independent study done that shows a need for a new school or anything else that is in this plan. Yes, the bus garage needs to be replaced and an area secured for bus parking but most buses are parked at the homes of the drivers so how much is there really a need for a central parking area for the buses.
Money has been appropriated at different times for the maintenance of the facilities but for some reason that money keeps being spent in other areas. Now, let me make this very clear, under the stewardship of Mr. Wright and the supervision of Mr Gonzolas I believe the maintenance program has and is doing what it should without the skimming of funds to other programs that has been the practice in previous administrations.
The bully tactics being used by the school system alone should be enough for evey citizen of the county to oppose this ludicrous plan of unfounded building expense. Ego should never be the basis for spending millions of taxpayer dollars.

If the money that was spent on football was spent on academics we would have high achieving students capable of getting into college based on academic merits. That also means getting rid of under achieving teachers and unneeded administrators. Bring back vocational programs and do away with athletics if you want to give students a real chance at success.

In the "Pulaski Citizen" newspaper the Director of Schools is quoted saying that, "At no time has the school board or anyone from the school district asked for permission to build a new school”. If this is true why is the matter even being discussed? The conversation gets even more interesting with the Director's next statement, “We have asked for money to be set aside to “POTENTIALLY” build a new school”. Potentially build a new school, really, really "potentially" after all the money that was appropriated for "potentially" building repairs, roof replacements, buses, etc. The newest office building in the school system was built with funds that had been appropriated to build a new "Bus Garage" and to "replace the incredibly dangerous and condemned central office" and "new buses" but apparently those were only "potential" projects for the real money was used elsewhere. It's not that these words should send up a "red flag" they are words that should send up red flags, enough to blot out the sun.

School board members insist that the commissioners vote to fund a new school. Why? Why do they think the commissioners are in the pockets of school board members? Now, they want to buy the Timken property. It doesn't seem to matter where the money comes from, they want to spend public money on something. It is tragic that public opinion does not matter to them. Soon, Vote them out. The public got rid of Lovell. It's time to get the others gone too.

Why hasn't there been an independent study about the need for a new school as Mr. Barrett called for in the Citizen?. I know he can't be the only one who sees the need for this but it does seem he is always on the front line talking about what's happening and why. Is it because the Commission now has so many commissioners that are making money off the school system that the School Board thinks they can dictate to the Commission? If the School Board controls the Commissioners, they only need eleven to have a majority and only about eight to block the rest of the Commission.

It seems the school director wants to persuade the commissioners to vote for his new school building. What difference does it make that he appears in front of the whole body? Is it more intimidation on his part? If our commissioners vote to support raising taxes, a wheel tax or any other revenue to build a new school, they should be removed immediately. Vote anyone out that wants to put a debt on us that we can't pay in our life time. New taxes for residents is not an answer to a selfish school system spiraling out of control.

This is what your director of schools wants to do.
The Giles County Building Project includes building a new GCHS, renovating the old GCHS after students have movedinot the new facility, move Bridgeforth Middle to new renovated old GCHS. After Bridgeforth has moved out of old Bridgeforth, we would build a new Bus Garage and Maintenance Building in front of the Old Bridgeforth, we would sale the old central office and move into Bridgeforth as our new Central Office. The projected cost for the whold project is 53 million dollars.
If the Timken site were acquired, it would be utilized for several things. Projected study of how the Timken Plant can be used: To build a New GCHS, transition Central Office, Bus Garage, and Maintenance to the Timken site. We sould still sell the old central office site and property and the old Bridgeforth School. There could be as much as 13 million dollars of saving when using the Timken site.
1. How Timken can be used:
a. Central Office
b. Bus Garage
c. Maintenance
d. Technology department
e. CTE Shops
f. Records Room
g. District Book storage room
h. All outdoor athletic facilities needed for new school
i. Football dressing room
j. Softball dressing room
k. Baseball dressing room
l. Boys and Girls Soccer dressing room
m. In-door multipurpose practicing area
n. Weight room
o. Concessions
p. 72 Acres for new High School

There seems to be missing anything devoted to a better education for the students.

Blogger Allen Barrett said...

Under the current "proposal", the project would cost 53 million dollars and would require a property tax increase of $0.58 cents per hundred dollars of assessed value. So if your house is appraised at $100,000 dollars the assessed value would be $25,000. The tax rate is based on per hundred so that would mean 250 times $2.83 for a tax bill of 707.50. If $.58 is added that would be a tax bill of $852.00 an increase of $144.50. That is an increase of 21% in the tax rate.

Ahh, but wait that proposed $53 million does not include the interest and fees for that loan nor does it include the actual cost of moving or the additional annual recurring cost of additional personnel for custodial services at the new school, cleaning supplies, maintenance, etc. In addition, there are other schools that are in need of major renovations so where is that money coming from, obviously the same money tree as the first $53,000,000.00. Now as has been stated elsewhere on this blog, after all that money is spent, the county is in deep debt and the taxpayer is struggling to pay their taxes will the level of education be any higher, will the lot of teachers be any better, will there be discipline and control enough that teachers can go to work without the fear of being beat up physically and emotionally, will the graduation rate be improved (not just pushing kids through the system but actually able to read, write and calculate)? At this moment none of these things seem to be high on the priority list... but then would those things really cost anywhere near $53,000,000.00?

They are idiots if they think the residents of the county will pay that much more in property taxes. Idiots! I just hope the public sees through all the fog being created and rejects such a ludicrous proposal.
As one mentioned earlier, nothing is being done to better educate our children and protect the teachers.
The only protection has been to the coaches abusing the young girls and getting them pregnant. It is time that stops. As long as football is the mainstay of the University of Giles County, it will not change. It all starts with the director and his flunky principal.

The dealer says oh somewhere between thirty and sixty thousand dollars you sign on the dotted line for the car then I'll tell you how much it's gonna actually cost. Like so many people you don't get the reason players were boycotting. It had NOTHING to do with the flag and as you say "all them that have died for this country." This is why there are problems, too many people don't hear and understand issues that have arisen again in this country that we all thought were disappearing.
Back to the school issues--As long as you have the coach at GCHS, the principal and a director who cares less about education than football, this will continue. They need to be reported again to the TSSAA.

It don't matter what the problem is or what someone might think it is you can do something about it without disrespecting the country and her people. I agree with you that football is much bigger priority than any other level of education. I want somebody to tell me if education is so important then why is the school system willing to spend over a million dollars on the possibility of a new school that don't have approval when there are so many things that are needed in the school system. Ask a teacher if they could benefit better from a simple $25.00 to spend on their classroom than to buy the Fafnir bldg? The school system is blowing a million dollars and nothing to show for it. The commission voted 11-10 against that proposal.

I surely hope the voters remember who voted for the school system to proceed with spending tax payer money will vote out those commissioners. How ridiculous that they would vote in that manner. I am glad the county commissioners voted NO to give the school board the money to purchase the Timken building. You need to fix the problem within the system before you move it to a new building. You need to get the test scores up and get the students the classes they need for college. We have kids going to college not prepared because they are not getting what they need for college. So fix the issues before you ask for money again.

It amazes me every time I read the complaints about the schools system. You all say it needs to change, but anytime the board or director tries to make changes you are bashing them. Fact of the matter is a good eductation all boils down to good teachers and recruiting good teachers and it is impossible to recruit good teachers to Giles County when we refuse to get our pay scale and school buildings up to levels of the other Mid State Counties. Take a good hard look at the County Commissioners on this. Until we have commissioners that place a value on education it is not going to get better. We are happy with the good ole boy system and being left behind in education. Another factor in this is Martin Methodist College putting out unprepared teachers. I am sorry, but there is a big difference between being certified to teach and actually being a teacher.

There are still too many of them left that are hurt by the boards actions. Plain and simple, the board created this mess, now live with it.
The commissioners have not been education backers in years. Look at some of them there. Many barely graduated from high school. Others there are too anti anything to be a good commissioner. Again, vote these people in, and you live with it.

But I do absolutely agree with you with the vote these people in and you live with it. However, how do you get good qualified people to even run for the seat with the situation as bad as it is now??

9:25--You are absolutely correct when you say the situation is bad. It truly is a terrible situation in this county. Egos get in the way of good judgment, jealousy leads to blinded unfairness and stupidity leads to unjust leadership.
How can you say a commissioner shot down the building program? I recall 11 people voting against the proposal. I support that one individual you attempt to point out. Not until the majority decide to do what is right in all aspects of education, will this terrible situation turn. I fear it has gotten so far wrong that it will take a miracle to turn it around.
Those who own property do not want to add $.52 to the property tax for something that was not needed. The reason for building a new high school has to have a better reason than wanting to gloat over a new building and "look what I did" attitude from the director and board. Those in charge ignorantly thought that having a "good" football team was going to create more support than having a "good" education.
Now, they must live with those inaccurate beliefs.

Great comments 10:27.

The premium place on football has created a great divide in our school system and community. This is the opposite of what these overgrown children thought would happen.

We had a temporary director the wanted to lead through teacher support and education. This community missed out greatly on this opportunity.

10:27 -- I just made a typo and left the s off of commissioners. I am not referring to one commissioner that shot down the building site purchase, it was several. And as long as we continue to vote for and elect commissioners that do believe in or value education, we will continue to fall behind the rest of the state in the level of education that we are giving our children. Everyone wants to blame the School Board --but it all falls back to the commissioners. They control what the school board does. If you don't think so just go to the meetings, or better yet -- run for School Board. Seems like every thing the school board does has to be approved by the commissioners first. Or maybe rather than running for School Board you could run for Commissioner and make a difference.

The absolute bottom line in the matter of the "new school building" is there is absolutely no justification for it. This is the pattern of student enrollment at Gile County High School Total Students at GCHS. 2012/13 - 839 students; 2013/14 - 877 students; 2014/15 - 860; 2015/16 - 858; 2016/17 - 819.
Read my letter in this week's edition of the "Pulaski Citizen" for the full chart showing the declining student population and increasing number of administrators. The simple fact is the School Board has its responsibilities and the Commissioners have theirs and each has to answer for their actions to different "bosses". The School Board presents a budget to the County Legislative Body after they approve it they do not control how that budget is spent other than to approve or disapprove any "AMENDMENTS" that the School Board might request during that budget year. The original school budget did not include money for a new school building that came before the Commission as an amendment. There is little question that the current School Board and Director are vast improvements over the last non-temporary Director and Board but the idea of spending an unknown number of millions of dollars on an non research suppiorted building project is plain ludcrous. My simple question is, "if the school system has over a million dollars is "extra" money to spend on a piece of property, why not give that money to teachers in the form of a bonus, I'm sure they could use a thousand dollar bonus.

Allen,

Instead of looking at pattern of student enrollment, why don't you look at the pattern of scores and rankings of Giles Co Schools. Until we decide to upgrade our system with pay and building improvements and/or replacements we will continue to be in the bottom quadrant. Thus affecting not only the future of our children, but also the county's ability to attract new industry. No matter what you think or say, the school system directly affects the recruiting of new industry. And believe it or not, this has ZERO to do with football. Continue to do what you have always done and you will continue to get the results you have always gotten. There cannot be complacency, you are either moving forward or you are falling backwards, and Giles County is NOT moving forward!!

Moving forward doesn't mean building a new high school for the reason of just having one. I agree that the school system and its thriving can be associated with new industry and new persons entering the county. Building a new school on the backs of those who own property, plus a wheel tax is not what I would support.

Giles County will never move forward with the current administration. They are focused on a new building no matter the cost, and as a taxpayer I can't afford $.52 more cents in property tax just so a few people can gloat and say look what I did. Focus needs to be on what the students require to get a quality education and that includes a staff that knows they are appreciated and not looked down on or being afraid to speak out for fear of job loss. A new building is not going to help test scores, it is not going to improve grade averages, it will not boost the low morale all these things can only happen with fair, honest, positive leadership that has its priorities set on improving academics in Giles County.

It seems that there are several people who are relatives of school system employees running for commissioners. I hope they are running to help improve education rather than voting to build a new high school. It also looks like Vanzant's relative is running for school board from the third district. I guess he wants to replace his relative McMasters on the school board. Good old boy politics at its best occurring right now. Be aware who is running is your district and vote wisely.

An organized effort to pack the County Commission with people making their living from the school system is underway. Already several who are teachers or the spouse of teachers are on the Commission and now, even more, are seeking those positions. The thing is people who oppose the wasteful spending of millions on an unneeded school will vote for those who will then vote t build the school. If citizens don't wise up we are going to be saddled with an empty school at Richland and a new seventy million dollar debt to be paid with a huge property tax increase and a wheel tax. You better start questioning the candidates instead of just say I went to school with him/her or she/he's a cousin of mine.

How can those kind of people lead without biased opinions of the truth or fairness?

A lot of good questions being asked here but for everyone who’s read this blog for a while knows that when it comes to politics and people being elected that it’s the same conversation. People complain yet the same people keep getting elected over and over.

It’s very much like the same thing that’s happening with this latest mass shooting in Florida at the high school. People complain and moan and cry but nobody does anything about guns. On to the next one.

So the bottom line is, put up or shut up!

7:28 --- I absolutely agree! Comparing to the school shooting is a little much, but I agree with you on the complaining. Same old issues and we elect the same good ole boys.

And can David Wamble be a commissioner and a school board member at the same time?

Wamble cannot serve in both capacities. He will have to resign from the school board if elected to the commissioner's position.
I have to agree with the put up or shut up and I am one to complain. The problem is that too few non good old boys want to run for positions when one feels he/she cannot make a difference. It also will change when others see that changes are taking place and others are welcomed to the political process.
We as citizens of Giles County must encourage better leadership. Everyone who smiles asking for your vote is not to be trusted with your vote.

I would really hope the voters look at the candidates within your districts and vote for those who are going to ask for and listen to the constituents within that district. It appears that some of the districts will have only three candidates from those districts, thus, no real choice or voice in the outcome. The question is "are we ready for a change in this county." Please look from top to bottom at the choices and use your vote for more than an old classmate or friend of a friend use of your vote.

Every time we get close to having an election people start talking about how much we need a change. Then they go right out and vote for the same ole people. Over and over officials are exposed as shady, less than truthful, self-absorbed, working for their own interest, providing jobs for family members, untrustworthy, thieves, etc, etc yet they get elected and re-elected while those who expose the problems are labeled as troublemakers and worse. Is it just that people like to echo what they have heard and are actually satisfied with less than quality leadership, wasteful spending, more and higher taxes?
Well, the news is there will never be any changes until there are changes in the people being elected. Isn't twelve, sixteen, twenty years and more enough for a person to accomplish something, yet that is exactly what we have in some offices, then they act as if they own that office and try to pass it on to their chosen heir. Enough, is enough it's time to think about all the good people of the whole county instead of just the elites that have taken control and use any means available to keep it.

Allen, you are wrong in filing a complaint against those women. You didn't seem to care when the board members did much worse in excluding the interim director from their candidates' list. Why do you chose to cause yourself problems with those in your district? You can't make people put you in office. They vote to do that.

To the 2:18Pm 27 Feb poster. The complaint I filed was not about putting me in office it was about following the law. If more officials would just simply read the Tennessee Code Annotated or even the CTAS Manual that each Commissioner is given most of the problems would be avoided. It's really very simple to know what the law says and follow it.
I'm not sure I understand your comment, "You didn't seem to care when the board members did much worse in excluding the interim director from their candidates list". If you are speaking of the School Board and their actions toward Mr. Smith you are just wrong if you think I didn't care. There were few, if any that spoke out and reached out to our representives in Nashville seeking their intevention. I spoke out in support of Mr. Smith at pubilic meetings and in private with School Board member and Commissioners. Ask Mr Smith if he feels I didn't care or was silent about the railroad job that was done on him.
Now you ask, ".Why do you chose to cause yourself problems with those in your district? You can't make people put you in office. They vote to do that." Here is my point, and I have expressed it numerous times, The only thing that a person truly ownes is their integrity, that is mine and mine alone, no one can take it, only I can destroy it. When you violate your integrity you never fully get it back. So, I have and will continue to do what I believe is right and if the people of the 7th district are satisfied with dishonest, double dipping incompentent leadership that waste taxmoney and sees the solution to every problem as more taxrs they will continue to vote for such people as Commissioners Harwell and Coleman. It's been said that you get the kind of leaders that you demand and it seems that some districts simply don't demand much because they continually have the least prepared reprensentation of all the districts.

Giles County Schools to Keep Moving Forward--Bull$h..! The school board and the director have become great manipulators of the truth. The newspaper seems to be right up that dark hole and wants to sell more propaganda. Ask the teachers and others how the school system is moving forward. It won't get better until the board and director has a change of scenery. Vote out those who care less about education and more about being seen as supporters of football.

WTH???? Just heard that the Richland football coach was fired???? WHY???? Does he only get one year to try to turn that program around? The football team is now starting their weekend devastated and will now go into the spring practice "starting over" AGAIN! This is unfreakin' believable. And people wonder why Richland football struggles. I can't even count up the number of coaches that have been in that position in the past 10 years. My biggest question is why does GCHS football get preferential treatment from the director/board...they get to hire a huge, experienced coaching staff that really don't have many classroom obligations. Richland struggles to keep 2-3 coaches that get crappy pay and full-time teaching responsibilities. So not only does Coach Holt get fired then they turn around and ask the asst coach to take head coach position. Richland does not even get an opportunity to hire someone with experience and drive to take the program where it needs to go. Coach Holt spent this last year not only increasing the number of players but also building the moral of the team. If this happens because of an incident that occurred at the last of the season involving a senior player that resulted in the coach getting suspended one game then the same result should happen to another coach at that school that treats his players FAR WORSE than Coach Holt ever treated his. I'm sure the coaches at GCHS are also quilty of chewing out students and using foul language too. If this is because some digruntled parent is mad cause their child wasn't given star treatment then you are in for a RUDE awakening when Richland tanks even worse than the last several years. Being a Richland alumni, it infuriates me that Richland football continues to be the LAST thought of the administration there or to the ones at the central office. Board members...you need to take a close look at this matter and give Richland football the help it deserves!!!!!!!

They soon threw a welcoming party for OC to be hired and wined and dined him as well as KISSED HIS ASS to get him at GCHS. It has been a total disaster for the morale of teachers there and across the system. The system is fully broken and they want you to believe that GCHS now needs a new school for a feather in their caps. What BS!

When you ask for help from the board, you are asking the wrong people to help you. They could care less about you or the team there. Two of the board members hate the school. Ask around and you will find out which two. If they say anything different, they are being the hypocrite they really are. It is sad that the education of the children is not first and foremost the importance of the school system. Rather, it is building a new high school and football at GCHS.
Be careful who you vote for in the upcoming election. Wolves in sheep's clothing are running for commissioners. They plan to raise your taxes to pay for a new high school. Question candidates and make them tell you the truth.

Looks like the commissioners had a meeting about why Terry Harwell was appointed to Campbell's seat on the commission. Somebody said Commissioner Coleman, the one that never says the Pledge of Allegiance, and Goolsby got together in secret meetings and convinced the other commissioners not to vote for anybody by Harwell. Looks like they wanted ole double dipping Terry to get back on the commissioners court so they wouldn't have to do nothing for a few more years. Goolsby was asked if she did it and she just said that she declined to answer. Coleman was still trying to figure out where she was when the meeting was over. I don't know which is worse being to dumb to know what's happening or being to crooked to care what's happening. Once again the county suffers because commissioners that don't want to be part of the country or that has sold their self to the devil.

This is part one of two parts.

As some of you know I have not maintained this blog with a lot of consistency lately, choosing instead to allow it to die over a period of time. It just took too much time to maintain and it was so frustrating with a few who simply could not adhere to the rules.

So, I was told about the post from 6:04PM, 21 March 2018 and found it rather humorous. Now I see where some nitwit has made the accusation that I was the author of the 6:04 PM 21 March 2018 post.

Let me make this as clear as possible, I speak for myself and I don't hide behind anyone else. I, alone, am responsible for what I say and do and when I post something on this blog or anywhere else it is with my name, if my name isn't on the statement then it wasn't from me. My name was not on the 6:04PM post.

There certainly are some things that were stated in the 6:04PM post that I fully agree with and a couple of things that I had to laugh at because they were so silly.

First, let’s set the record straight with the article in the newspaper that declared the, “Two Giles County Commissioners have been cleared of accusations that they violated the county "ethics code.” They were not cleared of anything, the Ethics Committee under pressure from the County Attorney Mr. Chris Williams, Terry Harwell’s stepfather, decided that the violations they were accused of did not fall under the authority of the Ethics Committee.

What was made abundantly clear during the Ethics Committee is that there was communications about the appointment of Terry Harwell and neither Commissioner Coleman or Goolsby denied it. In fact when Commissioner Goolsby was asked directly by the Chairman if she had engaged in private discussions and encouraged other commissioners to vote a certain way her response was, “I decline to answer”. Commissioner Coleman "as usual" seemed to be unaware of where she was or why.

The challenge that I lodged with the Ethics Committee was not about me as much as it was about everyone who had placed their names on the roster for consideration for the open seat. The behavior of the two commissioners was in direct violation of our civil rights and the expectation of a fair and open election. The Ethics Committee’s refusal to deal with the issue does not make it one bit less illegal or repugnant.

In the Ethics Committee, I read a statement that emphatically stated that I only wanted a simple informal examination of the facts and a decision made about those facts and the matter would rest there. I had no desire or intention of taking the issue to the courts or elsewhere if they would only examine the facts, including the statement I presented from a different commission that stated they had been approached by and overheard the two commissioners talk with other officials about how they should vote.

Now let me address the post that I was accused of writing.

I strongly oppose Terry Harwell being a member of the Legislative Body, because he has proven to not only be incompetent on the issues but he is being paid by the county while he serves summons for his Step Dad’s office, he now will also be getting paid by the county for time as an employee and also as a commissioner. Double dipping is illegal.

Part Two of Two

I also strongly oppose Commissioner Coleman being a member of the County Legislative Body based on at least three facts. One, she refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance. How can a person be a representative of a government that they have no allegiance to? Refusing to place her hand over her heart and repeating the Pledge is certainly bad enough in my mind, but playing with her phone while everyone else is showing respect for the nation and those who have sacrificed so much for it, is nothing short of reprehensible. Two, Commissioner Coleman is a thief and a liar. I have a copy of the sign in sheet and the pay record where she signed in and was paid for attending a meeting that she absolutely did not attend. Every Commissioner in that Committee Meeting saw her come into the meeting well after it was adjourned and signed in as having been present during the entire meeting. Third, She lied about her withdrawal from the School Board race and again about her qualification papers for the County Legislative Body, she also failed to list a bankruptcy on her state Ethics paperwork. Now, some may say she should sue me for some reason or the other. Nothing would make me happier than to get her under oath, answering questions about these issues and several others.

As for Commissioner Goolsby, I have no real problem with her and think that for the most part she has done a good job. I don’t think her illegal activity on behalf of Terry Harwell was intentional but the lack of knowledge about the Open Meetings Law and her response to it.

Now this is what I would have written had I chosen to write the post at 6:04 PM on 21 March 2018

Now, for the wait and see who gets elected to commissioners and school board positions to see if a new school project is shoved down our throats. Get out and vote and make sure your interests are protected. Just because the county is now debt free of major indebtedness, there is NO reason to go into a $75 million debt hole again.

Josh Kovach is running for school board. He is the husband of the supervisor in the director's office. You have to know his agenda is already determined by what his wife wants and Wright wants. What happens when he disagrees with the director? Does his wife lose her job or does he get a pat on the back?
There is something wrong with spouses of school employees sitting on the board, especially when it's a husband of a supervisor. This is getting more crooked day by day. The school board and Wright took a different approach by getting "their" people to seek office for their school building program benefit. Not only are they stacking the commission ballot, but the school board ballot as well.
Wake up Giles County! The cancer is eating away from the inside out.

Teachers and teacher's spouses on the School Board and the County Commission should be a conflict of interest. School Board members should not have spouses on the Commission either. It only takes four votes on the School Board to give the Director anything e wants. It only takes eleven commissioners to decide most things and only 16 commissioners to do anything they want without asking the people of the county what they want. Vanzant has said "No New School" Greene has said "No New School At The Cost Currently Quoted". Be very careful what people say because no new school at 53 million dollars is not the same as no new school at all.

It is a shame that they would rather build a new school to say they have one instead of building one to better educate the children. They don't give a flying .... about better education!
With many of the new ones running and having associations with board personnel, the outlook is not good. Millions in debt for years to come does not make sense.
I would support the idea if the school's enrollment was bulging at the walls, but that is not the case. School enrollment continues to decline.
There are those who say a new school will attract new industry. That is not the case. Scores and graduation rates still lag far behind. Start by paying good teachers more to stay here and teach. Look at the many teachers who left the system and are thriving elsewhere. They did not want to leave, but saw that the school system was more interested in football than education.

Off subject but the best forum to discuss anything so here goes. If you three commissioners in district 5 think you are going to sweet mouth the owners of the business in Bryson that you voted against on the beer license you have another thought coming. These people are more active in promoting tourism and Giles County as a whole than anyone in the entire county. They talk to many people in the course of operating this business and you have turned your back on them. I will be vocal as well as others about how this business has been treated between now any election time. Perhaps you listened to the voices of a few without seeking the opinion of many others.

Commission voted to allow the citizens to vote for referendum on building a new school. Shame on those who feel the public should not have a say so in raising taxes and being stuck with a bill for their grandchildren to pay. Find out who voted for and against the measure. The director invited about 80 people to visit the schools and the board office. There were so few that showed up he thought he should cancel it. He needs to know that he cannot force people to vote and support a property tax that could kill this county just to have his name on a new high school. He has become a like a kid who can't have his way. His attitude is to harass everyone enough until they say yes. How idiotic!

The football bigwigs chose the next director and had Mr. Smith pushed out. The truth will eventually come out maybe by the way of a lawsuit, hopefully before they push a big property tax increase on Giles County. Most of the board members are just as bad as they are and all they need is 4. Vote them out.

It is no wonder that the enrollment is down and parents are running for the border to enroll their children in other school systems. More teachers and headed for the same course. They are tired of all the BS and low morale. Let the deterioration continue, but bless the teachers and children who have no choice.

Now that we know the school system and its leaders have failed us, where to next? Principal changes, irate populous in Elkton. Nothing seems to be right except for the hard working teachers who love the children. We know that the leadership in the school system cares more for football than the children who are failing. The system continues to drop in the rankings of the district of counties around us. Bottom and looking up at all the others! The teachers are more than dissatisfied. They have become demoralized.

The actions of Wright and our school board members have been a complete slap in the face to Elkton. Mr. Rich has been one of the best things to happen to our community since Mr. Polly retired. The morale and culture have been changed for the better due to his leadership and passion for the kids and teachers at Elkton. Just another blow to our education system. When will people wake up and take a stand to say "Our kids come first"!!!

Wright doesn't care about the children of Giles County. He is not from here and has NEVER tried to attach himself to the children and this community. Sure, he goes through the motions, but he is still a puppet for Brewer, Holt, McMasters and the football warriors. Too bad Brewer will be back to help push a new football school. McMasters has her father replacing her (what a joke). Holt ran just to keep someone else in his district from getting the position. The school system is in such disarray that morale is gone and many are now waiting their time to leave.

Rather than push to improve education in the county, the director and board are still pushing to buy a building that was built for a manufacturing plant; not built to be a school. the mentality is that they would rather be bull headed and win by building a high school for the football program rather than raise the status of education in the county. Still, there are too many teachers looking for jobs elsewhere because of the terrible morale in the system. Shame on Wright and the board members.

Now, he wants to play on the sympathy of people by showing mold in a classroom at GCHS. That kind of thing has been present for years. Build a new school and all that will disappear. Anything to make the public seem he has their kids at heart. He hasn't in the three years he's been here. If it had been the football cathedral, no mold would be found. Pay the coach all year for hanging out at the cathedral. Maybe, they should use some of the under table money that is paid to him to do repairs on the buildings. Another reason not to vote on a shady new school project; the money never reaches places it is supposed to reach. And it never helps the children it is supposed to help.
If you didn't know, Wright is waiting on the Maury Board of Education to rid itself of the current director so he can go back to Maury County. Let's only hope!!!

Giles County must forfeit its five football wins and will miss the Class 3A playoffs after it played an ineligible player this season. The school also was fined $700 — $100 for every game in which the player participated.

This marks the third time the Giles County football program has been disciplined for TSSAA violations under the leadership of coach David O’Connor during his two stints as the Bobcats’ coach. However, it marks the first time the program has forfeited wins.

The TSSAA ruled Giles County played an ineligible player in its first seven games. The athlete originally was ruled eligible based on a bona fide change of residence. However, the TSSAA and Giles County administration later verified that the school was provided false information.

According to a letter to Giles County Principal Donna Cobb from TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress, the athlete's "family unit" moved into the Giles County zone to make the athlete eligible. Afterward, one of his parents moved back to the original residence.

Thursday, October 18, 2018 5:43:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

TSSAA bylaws state that if an athlete has been ruled eligible as a result of change of residence, and the parents or guardian returns to the former residence before the student has been enrolled in the new school for 12 months, the athlete is then ineligible.

Giles County's violation is the latest in a troubling year for TSSAA football programs. At least four schools have been forced to forfeit games for playing ineligible athletes.

Clarksville Northeast forfeited its first five wins after it played an ineligible player. Powell later forfeited seven wins. And Christian Academy of Knoxville forfeited one game because of an ineligible player.

Giles County, which was 5-3 overall and 1-2 in Region 5-3A, was primed for a top-three finish if it beat Stratford on Oct. 26 to finish the season. The Bobcats must forfeit a region win over Whites Creek, which will now qualify for the playoffs despite currently holding a 2-7 overall record.

The Bobcats also forfeit nonregion wins to Lawrence County, Lincoln County, Marshall County and Fayette-Ware. Giles County plays at Tullahoma on Friday in a nonregion game.

O’Connor previously committed TSSAA violations in 2012 and 2016 while at Giles County.

In 2012, O’Connor was given a two-game suspension for breaking the recruiting rule when he had illegal contact with a student from another high school. He resigned to take the head coaching position at Buckhorn (Ala.) while Giles County was placed on a two-year probation with a $1,000 fine and other punishments in 2013 and 2014.

He returned to Pulaski to coach the Bobcats in 2016 and immediately violated a then-new rule by allowing eighth-graders to lift weights and conduct football activities during school hours within a period that was not allowed.

TSSAA policy does not allow it to punish the coach directly. It can punish only the high school program.

Three times he's violated the rules and laws of the TSSAA. The principal didn't care. The director didn't care. The board chairman did't care. All they wanted was to con the public into building a new school for the football Klan.

Fire the coach, the principal, director and board chair. They were all in on this fiasco.

Cheat at all cost to make it. That's not a good message to send to children.

The blog might be, but discipline in the schools is dead. None is taking place.

Praise to the School System for offering the Dale Carnegie course to some lucky 30 students. This is a life changing course they will greatly profit from. I am on old man now but when I observe a public speaker I can tell which ones are Dale Carnegie graduates.

Let's give them the course and grades to boot without doing anything to earn the grades. That is the way it's done at the high school. Pass them on without any learning taking place. Let Dale Carnegie class be more productive elsewhere where students earn it and are not given grades for sleeping through the class.
