Taxes, taxes, taxes...

Is any Tennessee county taxed higher than Giles, given the paltry amount of services delivered? And is there anything we can do about it, short of holding a "necktie party" for the current officeholders in the County Commission and School Board? Answers, please.

I doubt that many have been involved in expanding corporate operations or the process of locating a business that provides jobs for our residents. I have. Taxation becomes a key element where there is a tendency to increase rates where there is poor growth and poor control over spending. Our county government voted down financial management control for various reasons, including the claim that they can't afford to find out what we have or how to account for it! On top of that, our two top leaders of education plus the "education block" in the commission lead the fight to stop financial control because their objective is spending more money per pupil, not understanding and appreciating available resources or how to excel in the face of adversity! The school that teaches tolerance needs to learn that there is little room for tolerance when it comes to quality, honesty, or attitude in a successful business. The same is true in life. One look at the school budgets and their spending increases, tax increases, manipulations, and deceit ... And, the search will be over!

That is a pitiful statement, because Giles and surrounding counties have some of the best workers in the country. They can not only learn to do it "your way", chances are high they can figure out a better way and will help make a company more competetive. don m

One thing we can do about it is vote the commissioners out of office who have kept everything and everyone repressed. Maybe we'll get some people in there who don't mind looking at cuts. After all, so many people have lost their jobs in this county, we should cut back on expenses accordingly.

TAXATION DISEASE ALERT!

SYMPTOMs: We need new sources of revenue. Some taxpayers are not paying their fair share. Impact fees. Lots of whining about not having enough of someone else's money to spend.

DIAGNOSIS: Parasites - Vulgaris magnauas wormikus - infestation in the lower regions of the bowels. They like to hang out near the exit & are known to congregate with like minded species.

Cure - Vote for someone else.

Me also, our taxes have went up $300.00 in 7 years and ech time it was around $100.00, we only own two vehicles which at $25.00 per that would be a $50.00 savings. I know you say it you implement a wheel tax they can continue to raise it. They can't if a stipulation is put on it that the only way to raise it would be a vote from the public. Now then renters would also be responsible for helping support our county and not just property owners, Tee Jackson would than give us back some of those dollars so freely given to Him.

I gotta agree with Barrett on this one. Lovell (district 4) is hung up on getting a wheel tax in. Has been for years. What we need is new commissioners who will look at cutting some of the pork spending that has built up over the years.

I am not saying lets get a wheel tax I do not want anymore taxes at all I was just trying to say is that if I have to pay more I would rather it be in the form of a wheel tax so some who are not responsible for bearing the tax burden will help for a change.

Everyone pays property taxes. Property tax is applied to all rental property and is passed on to the renter plus profit in the form of rents paid.

Property tax is included in the cost of business plus inventory in all the groceries and goods bought by property owners, renters, and anyone passing through the area.

Property tax is out in the open where everyone can see it. Property tax revenue increases automatically with each new dwelling and business. It's out in the open and requires open notice to increase tax dollars.

A wheel tax is a bureaucratic way to divide and conquer taxpayers. It isn't just $25 per "my" car, it's applied to every vehicle on the farm & business - and gets passed right back into the price of groceries, services, & goods we get plus "my car's fuel etc." When it goes from $25 to $50, then more, the fingers will point everywhere, except to the few bureaucracts who will never get enough.

Most of our taxes automatically increase with growth, and at a greater rate than the average wage earner based inflation rate. Most of our departments operate without a problem. We know who doesn't.

A wheel tax is simply one more hand in your pocket, taking more food off your table. If a bureaucrat wants a bigger share of your money, make them justify it. If you knowingly agree, give them the property tax increase with the knowledge that you are serving each other & let there be peace in the valley. If I can't afford a property tax, I sure can't afford another bureaucracy plus a wheel tax! dm

OK! I will be the first to admit that I might not be the smartest kid on the block, but explain this to me. Why is it that twenty-one commissioners, the tax assessor's
office, county executive,and CTAS
could not tell us if the tax assessor's office was out of compliance or not? That seemed much
ado about nothing or a play to make
the tax assessor come out looking good since he will be up for election in a couple of years. And
we wonder why are taxes are so high.
