Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. E-mail topic: To Organize Or Not To Organize- that is the question.

Are people ready to do something about the existing unacceptable situation that exist within the school system, the city and county government or do you just want to talk about the need for something to be done? Here is your chance to do more than just ventilate.

There are some who are seeking to organize a group to address problems within our county. The time and place of the first organizational meeting is yet to be scheduled.

If you are interested in possibly being a part of such a group please post your thoughts on this thread. If you would be interested in taking part in the organizational meeting give me a call. Those who may be concerned about remaining anonymous I can only give my word to you that under no circumstance will I reveal your identity without your full permission. So please let us hear your concerns on this blog or call me, everything will be kept in strict confidence. My number is 363-1983 my name is Allen Barrett.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if this "group" would try focusing on positives rather than negatives for a change. They are continually wanting to investigate someone. Talk about drama kings and queens. Giles County has its share of them. It gets old!

Dear Mr. Barrett,
I will most definitely call you. I know you will face ridicule for what you are trying to do, but I respect you for being a force in this county to try get rid of those who abuse their power.
It seems that so many people are afraid to post their name on these sites, and that is a crying shame. Are we truly a free country? I think not! I have faced the retrubution of expressing my opinion. My son has also faced prejudice because of who I am. An innocent child of mine has not been allowed to be a part of this community because I did not suck up to the big wigs.
I wish you the best of luck and will support you in all your endeavors.

To anonymous of Thursday, November 09, 2006 8:04:21 PM you have to address the bad to get to the good, nothing will ever change if the people who are allowing all of this negative stuff to go on are not held accountable. Since you seem to know so much you tell us how we can go about doing things another way! Put up or shut up!

The only way for things to get better, for all of us, is to have open dialogue on the issues. We need to discuss our strengths and weaknesses. The strengths you try to continue to build on. The weaknesses have to be identified and CHANGED!

As for anonymous who speaks of "drama kings and queens", do you have reason to fear discussion or exposure of facts? Are you one of the ones working so hard to prevent government accountability?

Wouldn't it be just as refreshing if the know-it-alls would channel their energies and egos toward positive things rather than constantly trying to "expose" and hurt others who are trying to do their jobs the best they know how. It may not be good enough for those "more enlightened", but it's worked just fine for all the years I can remember!

But do we really need a little insurgency group out there working to embarrass and destroy others? Am I my brother's keeper or not? Effective change can be accomplished without such alienating tactics. Perhaps these complainers need to be "investigated" first?
Again, give peace a chance. Think.

Well I am a taxpayer and am tired of my money being wasted-being is I have no choice to pay or not. Yes it would be nice if peace would work but you see that is what has been happening over the years people sat back and just let happen whatever happened. And now giles county is one of the highest taxed counties in Tennessee. I have a problem with that. My family has to live on a budget, we can't go to our boss and tell him to give us more money just because we want it, but the people who are in charge of making decisions with our money do exactly that and when they make those decisions we have no choice in the matter. Most people do not complain for no reason, and usually aren't trying to hurt others they just wants answers to question that are never given!!!!

Amen to the above post. Those who have it made in getting whatever they want, are the ones we question here. Mr. Jackson asks for things that the county doesn't need. He ignores the problems at RHS because he doesn't want Ms. McMasters up there with him. If her really wanted to change things at that school, he would investigate the books, her attendance ( which I'll have to say has been better this yr.), but in the past has been horrific, and the obvious dissatisfaction by those who work with her, the parents, and even the students. Is there a way to get a copy of the results from the teacher evaluation done by the teachers last yr.? I would like a copy, and then ask Mr. Jackson why he continues to let her run that school. I'm 96% sure that the evaluation was negative.
Mr. Barrett, this it your blog, so I ask you to find the results of that evaluation.
Those of us who live on a budget, as the above poster does, are tired of this school system and their arrogance. Let there be peace indeed. Peace for those of us who work to pay for whatever the administraion wants.

FREE SPENDING!!!!!!!!!!! Make the people who spend the money be accountable for how they spend it. I do not believe it was in the best interest of the taxpayers of Giles County to extend Tee Jackson's contract until 2009. We now a stuck with the burden of either buying his contract out or letting him continue wasting our money. The school employees have been told they were getting a raise, Tee Jackson was given that money by the commissioners-now you answer me why they did not get one-that is something that needs to change. He can basicly what he wants without having to answer to anyone.

I, as a taxpayer, AM here to expose dishonesty in govt. and the school system.
Why do you feel this is wrong? Am I suppossed to sit back and just watch it all unfold before my eyes and do nothing about it? If America did this, where would we be now? Surely not a free nation!
Why do you feel it is so wrong to ask questions and make people accountable? Please give me a GOOD answer to my question?
Thank you.

Our system can provide accountability, the Council simply doesn't enforce it. The problem is in the school system, not county wide. That makes the solution simple! If Jackson wants money for raises, make him create a separate dedicated fund for them. The council can deny any budget amendments without it! The substance abuse sloagan "JUST SAY NO" works! "Lie to the boss & you're out" is another that we haven't learned!

If Jackson has cooked the budget & comes back for another million or so in mystery money, the council can deny the budget amendment request to spend it! If he can't budget it, he doesn't need it. If he doesn't know what is happening (a plan) get someone who does, or better yet, put it in a rainy day fund.

The annual budget amendment process of adding a million or two here, there, & who knows where else ... every year immediately after the annual budget passes ... is ridiculous! That has become the foundation & icon of the school system - false witness & deceit! If that money isn't used for the intended purpose, then the lie is further compounded.

We're on shaky ground if the roof that we can't see on the pretty building we do see is leaking and ready to collapse.

Mr. Barrett,
I definitely want to organize. I think people have been scared away from this blog due to someone stating that what we say will be traced back and we will all be sued. Therefore, I suggest that you offer a few dates, and we meet somewhere to form an agenda as to what we want to achieve as a group.
Many have stated their feelings here about the govt. and the school system, but it's time to meet as a group and get down to business. NO one can be sued for meeting as a group and deciding who can do what as committees are formed. Enough talking. It's time for action. Give us some dates to consider and let's just see how many people show up and are serious about what they say on here. I'm ready to get some surveys out there to the public and get an agenda moving.!!!!!!!!!

Yep, I'd like to know (as if I don't already) what this group's objectives are. Could one of your goals be to embarrass and humiliate those you don't particularly like? Are you EVER on a slippery slope?

Saturday, November 18, 2006 7:51:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We aren't on a slippery slope. The ones who are abusing their powers are the ones on a slppery slope. They haven't been held accountable.
ONe example, Mr. Jackson promised teachers a $1000 raise. We didn't get it last time, and now this time we are only getting about $850 of it. What is he doing with the rest of the money? Who knows. Was an audit ever done on the goings on at the HILL? I don't think so. He and Mr. Gonzales did many things that I"m sure were wrong, and we need to find out first of all, where all the money he asks for and gets every year, is going. This is only one example of many many things that I believe we could find wrong with his administration as well as the one at RHS.
This "little group" you are trying to insult wants to correct some things or at least expose them. What happens from there is up to the school board. We have a few who don't bow down to Mr. Jackson, as all did in the past board, and maybe we can get rid of the varmit.

We have a cancer in our government that threatens our very freedom! Yet, I look at the government's body and see beauty, competence, and folks who will do just about anything to do a good job and help just about anyone who needs it. Maybe it's just a dose of polyps. Why not whack them & move on?

Traditions of importance have overpowered those of traditional value. The ultimate insult of turning your back on someone was once called shunning. It was aimed at people to cast them out of society. There is a process of being nice to people to their face and shunning them the minute their back is turned. Today, the Council will be nice before the meetings, but their first official act is turning their back to the public; and then conducting public business in a manner where the public can neither hear or understand. Then, there are private meetings where the public is excluded. Public business is also routed to non council functions along with the power to make decisions that should be openly made by the council. Insult is added to injury with the official actions of telling the public they can't do anything about it. It gets worse when the public finds there is no penalty in the law; and the government that is paid to protect you is not going to protect you from itself! If that won't rub your fur backwards, noting will!

What should the people do? What if they all turned their back to the proceeding the minute it starts? I know some would be upset & get the message. Some like the last Council would be happy & try to write the process into Robert's rules. Some say it's as simple as motivating the person in charge of pointing the chairs in the right direct and turning the sound system on! It seems like the Council could do that with a motion. A thought occurs - If no one will make that judgment, then we need a judge ... A court order. Issuing a proclamation, "TURN THE CHAIRS AROUND! TURN THE SOUND ON!", would do the trick! All of a sudden, it becomes a matter of contempt, where the contemptible get to pay the fines and spend a bit of time on the inside looking out!

How can adults get in a situation this stupid? Can't you visualize a meeting with the public pointed in one direction, the council in the opposite direction, and the mistress of ceremonies in the middle trying to get everyone's attention! A good plot for the Three Stooges!

We aren't too stupid to step out of the rain, but our govt. is, and that is the reason for our dismay at all that is going on.
I am curious also as to the response Mr. Barrett received after making his statement at the meeting. I'd be willing to bet the farm that it wasn't a very intelligible one. I'd say the chairs were turned and the microphones weren't turned up and that he was treated like a soldier in Iraq.

I doubt Mrs. Vanzant wants to see anyone "in court". The words of her own family would be enough to put her in prison.

Husband? But she claimed to voters to be a single mother. Now we discover she does have a husband. And Mr. Vanzant lurkes around the courthouse as if he owns it instead of lurking around the one in Lincoln County where he lives. We get tired of seeing him around the courthouse. And why doesn't Janet tell him to CLEAN UP for Pete's sake?

The question is why does she need a bodyguard? If Joe isn't careful he is going to get in way over his head. I hope I get to see it when somebody knocks him out for sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. Course his wife is his meal and insurance ticket. And I guess he would fight anyone to keep that security. From what I hear she always has been while he ???

I noticed someone used the word Facetious on the blog about positives today too. What is the deal with using this word? Why don't you just say all of this is "funny or humerous"? Does it make you feel intelligent to use such a big word, because after reading your post on the Positive blog, I thought your wording was pretty poor. Poor grammar skills as well as putting your thoughts down in an unorganized manner--in other words, it was hard to understand exactly what you were trying to say. You are boring us with your Facetious word and it's not "funny" anymore. I think a lot of people on here are becoming fed up with your constant use of this word. Find a new one to thrill us with please.
Oh well, it's a free country, but thought you might want to know how irritaing it is to see that "word" on every post.

12-3-6
If you disagree with the right to have free and open government (sunshine law), the obligation of government to answer to the people, and a government of the people, by the people, and for the people ... then you are a fool. If you disagree with the right and obligation of the people to take individual actions to insure a free and open government, you are a fool. If you think that taking those actions are petty and without great personal sacrifice, you are a fool. If you simply want a government to run your life for you, meet in secrecy, and make you support whatever they want - you become a threat to freedom!

Those threats are very isolated, but real. If you don't take positive steps to remove negative threats, life "ain't gonna' be good"! Identifying and removing problems is not negativity. It's very positive for the community, yet seldom rewarding for those who make it happen! You who call them whiners, arrogant, meddlers, and worse, were not man handled and jailed because you opened the closed "public meetings" of the school board and the county commission. Were you were sitting with the "persecution"?

The 2005-6 $1.5 million and 2006-7 $1.9 million school property tax increase denials represents $3.4 million of property tax increases that didn't happen in Giles County! Add automatic state matching funds of more than double the property tax; and, we have a whopping $10+ million of state & local taxes that didn't happen! In spite of all of that, the "Hydra's" cup runneth over with millions more to spend in both years! And, of that which spills hither and yon, none reaches the real passers of wisdom! Amazing! This is a better place because of all the fighting & fussing. Yes, we are morally and financially richer because it. I appreciate what has happened.

Old saying: "If you hear a gnawing sound in the corn crib, you eliminate the rat." It seems like you want to let him move from one corn crib to another! The fat rat is contrary to the flat rat theory. don m

I NEVER said I was against government accountability in the first place. But the best democratic way to resolve your disapproval of those who are elected to govern us is by voting them out.

As I have said before, We have some of the finest elected and civil servants in the country and you can't name an area where that isn't true. We also have a very isolated pocket of significant corruption.

My comments were stated as, "if" you stand for certain things. I expected you to say you were no fool. Calling yourself a fool doesn't change your real motive.

No one is being blown up on the square, kidnapped, beheaded, or any of the other insane things terrorists do. "The little group" isn't trying to overthrown the government. None of it has anything to do with corruption or the fact that the corruption will end. The sky isn't falling; but, the big black cloud & thunder you hear is saying, you better get out from under the money tree, or a big bolt of lightening is gonna' get you.

The $3.4 million in turned down tax increases is only a part of the puzzle. The millions in spending amendments during that same time period, teachers screaming for the raises they didn't get, sand castles on drawing boards, people voting to fund raises for themselves, and much more are signs of a broken pot, not a scattered puzzle. It's time to fix it, not throw chaff to the wind! I don't want to know who you are - you may wake up and be the person who solves the problem. don m

But isn't it frustrating when you know all the answers and nobody really asks you the questions? One thing that is clear from your post is that you are an idiot. Actually an idiot lacks the capacity for understanding, you likely have the capacity to understand but choose not too, that makes you much worse than an idiot, it makes you stupid. To have no concern for the truth or untruth of a matter simply because you dislike the messenger is incredibly stupid. I wonder how you would respond if Mr Barrett banged on your door to announce your house was on fire. Would you ignore him because you dislike him or would you haul your butt out before you burned it?
You speak of Mr Barrett as being arrogant toward you. I must say that he has been far more patient and pleasant with you than I would have been. Have you considered that perhaps you feel people are talking down to you because there is no other way to get across to you? It is you that has shown the arrogance you condemn.
As another poster stated, “you are a coward” in the way you have personally attacked people then hidden behind the anonymous label. Calling you a coward is actually a slander to the word coward. You need to give it a rest or come up with a new song.

I haven't been on this blog in a long time, but after reading the back and forth comments, I have come to the conclusion that someone out there has a real problem with Mr. Barrett, and I'm afraid this person is capable of actually breaking the law because he/she is so angry. My goodness, what would make a person so angry against another?? Is it that Mr. Barrett knows something? Or is it that this anonymous person is just crazy? It is surely embarrassing to read such dialouge.
The hatred I read disgusts me. I don't think there would be such hatred written unless the anonymous blogger writing about him has something to hide. What is it? Someone enlighten me as to what on Earth is going on here? I admire Mr. Barrett just because he signs his own name. Why doesn't the person who hates him so much do the same? Or better yet, why doesn't the person who hates him so much just call him up and you two discuss your differences by phone and get them out of the way so we don't have to read your hatred toward him on this post. He is not a coward from what I have seen and read. He fought the school board and even went to court over what they did to him. I admire that. Too many of us, me included, hide from those we are afraid of, but not Mr. Barrett. You go man! I love what you try to do for the citizens of this county. Don't be discouraged by the above idiots. Here we go again. The idiot in the well speaks or is it speekes, removing all doubt except in his own mind. Mr. Barrett can't talk up to you when you are way down there! Give him & the rest of a break - climb out or tie a rock on your foot.

(Don't get mad margie - you probably have what the rest of us don't have - a brain. If I had an ex, it would probably be a good teacher who lost her mind trying to find mine)-

Marge,
I've been advised by Mr. Barrett that I had attacked you in the above post. And, in reading it again, I can see where he might have arrived at the wrong conclusion.
My remark about one being presumed to be stupid and then removing all doubt when he opens his mouth was NOT directed at you. I was referring to people who condescend to those they disagree with, presuming their ignorance of the facts, etc.
The accusation bothered me, and I wanted to clear it up with you.
Merry Christmas.

I just got on this post tonight, and I am absolutely shocked at the person who thinks Mr. Jackson is a wonderful, dignified man who is so easy to talk to you. You even mention his style. My gosh, are we paying for someone who dresses stylish? Are you a family member or a mistress? I swear, you sound like you may be his wife or other famly memeber. The man is so arrogant that it makes me sick and most teachers would agree. You say leave the county if you don't like him?????????? You have to be kidding me. The man isn't from here and WE are supposed to leave the county? The man should have been booted out of here a long time ago. The only people I know that like him are about 3 board members who kiss his tail to keep their children hired on in the system. Otherwise, the man is not liked at all. Just this fall during General Sessions, in which all teachers of the county are required to attend for inservice credit, Mr. Jackson got almost no recognition when he addressed the teahers-- I mean, almost no one clapped for him. It's very obvious that the teachers have no respect for him, and that is why they showed up in large numbers at the board meeting. To think that you have the gall to suggest that these teachers were hired by a temporary job placement service is not even laughable. You are one weird person who must be from another planet. I am shocked at your statements.
The teachers of this county want aonther Director of Schools. We want someone who we can talk to withougt being looked down upon. And, by the way, our raise wasn't $1,000 as promised. That is another story though that I'll save for later. I am greateful for wheat I got, but it wasn't what was promised.
Signed, one RICH teacher!

Sorry for the mispelling at the end of the last post-- don't want to look like a dumb teacher. Guess I was still in shock as I finished my post.

WAB
What did you just say above??????? Interpret that if you would. Are you the Riddler or the Joker?
The main problem people have with the truth as you call it is that you think you are the one who has the it and nobody else.

To the anonymous teacher...
I didn't write the post you are referring to, and I am neither family member nor mistress of Mr. Jackson. In fact, I'm neither friend nor foe. Suggesting that Mr. Jackson has a mistress is a very dangerous charge. Do you realize the harm that can do?
Secondly, style is not in the clothes one wears but rather in the way a person conducts self.
You call Mr. Jackson arrogant, and he may well be. I don't know. But when you use the word arrogant on this blog to describe those who truly are, you are inviting ridicule for sure.
Finally, I am on your side and hope you get all the benefits your job as a professional would demand.

You all are picking on Mr. Jackson. Maybe he would be nice to you if you were nicer to him. You are supposed to love your neighbor, turn the other cheek, and help him in his mission.

If you don't like it here, move! If you don't like the fine way the schools operate, vote for someone else in a couple of years when they run again. Mr. Jackson is appointed so he can do the right thing without being voted out by a bunch of crazy misguided citizens!

Mr. Barrett - There you go being Mr. Smarty-Pants again. (I'm name-calling.) "If you have trouble understanding...." blah, blah, blah
Just reply without acting like people are stupid and have to have someone help them read or understand something.

Wrong yet again, Mr. Barrett. I am not the same person who posted and "described your behavior" as Mr. Smarty Pants. I just had to clarify his/her misunderstanding of what constitutes name-calling.

Allow me to put a different twist (spin) on the shoes thing. If the shoe fits, try not to wear it anymore.

Am I to now understand that you are getting down to "my level" by attempting to teach me the basics of spelling? How commendable of you. We are life-long learners, aren't we?

bubbles from the well, Your leash secures you to your delusion. It keeps the grass worn down around the well you hide in. We can't help but speak down to you. We see not even two beady little eyes in your chasm of darkness. We don't hate you - simply feel sorry for someone destined to speak in bubbles, because he fears sunshine more than the deepness of the well.

12-21-6 Who are we - who are you? Who, Who, Who cries the wise old owl.
Is it a conscience that keeps heads throbbing? BUT, first ... More learnin' ... Snoopin' in the corners & crevices ...

Aunt Maude refers us to the ant colony, beginning with the beginning & ending with the ending. Ignore Ant was either too lazy or didn't know what to do. Pretend Ant made everyone think he knew what was happening, but did nothing but get in the way. Attend Ant made sure things got done. Of course there was K. Ant and Command Ant. Defend Ant is on the wrong side of right. Legit Ant tries to move Defend Ant back to the right side of right, and so forth. The little fellers scurried hither & yonder, sweeping the streets & keeping things squeaky clean and straight. However, with just a little thought, we can all see that the ant colony was living on a banana peel.

All worked well until an ant latched on the tire of a north bound bus that stopped off for a whiz break at the ant colony. Tire Ant was tired of spinning around endlessly and accomplishing nothing. Some say the rocking' & rolling' over the road affected his attitude. All he learned how to do was spin. It was time for him to take charge, apply all the wisdom he could remember, and make things happen for him. It was time for Command Ant to move over to follow in the tracks of Tire Ant. Discipline by Zero Taller Ant & Conform Ant replaced scurrying & spiffying things up. Would the streets of shiny gold turn to mud and mold? Should we do something negative to Tire Ant? Should we be positive by not doing something negative to Tire Ant? Will the colony realize that Tire Ant will positively do negative things to the colony because he is positively a negative ant. Are we positively sure positive thoughts eliminate the negativity of negative deeds? Is sweeping the street not worth the negative affects on that which we wish to sweep off the street?

all of the Ants should be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the little group of Wanna Bees! and when the Bees dont find anything, maybe they can just fabricate stories about all the Ants they dont like and post them. no wait, that's already the buzz. guess they will have to devise another plan of action.

Hey, you are almost as good as the Riddler in spinning a tale. I think you have it right though.

Even if the Wanna Bees can't find anything wrong with the Ant family, they will keep digging until they find something (nothing good of course) that THEY feel should be shared with the entire animal kingdom.

They will sting as long as it takes to get their venom injected into the minds of as many onlookers as they can, hoping to turn the masses against the entire Ant klan. When and if their goal is achieved, they will "take over" the klan and tell them how they should live their lives and what they should think from that day forward. And the Wanna Bees lived happily ever after, because they knew they were smarter and knew what was best for the Ant family.

The Wanna Bees must be a strange breed. They never produce any honey. Their buzz produces only vinegar. Hmm, maybe they're somehow akin to flies, which as we all know are just annoying.
