WAB: Skyrocketing School Spending

I presented a paper to the combined committee last night that showed strong evidence of budget manipulation by the school director and school board. Included in this report was the following information. School spending for the 2003-4 year was $22,396,776 the 2006-7 budgets plus the November amendment set spending at $28,641,021 an increase of $6,244,245 or an average increase of $2,081,415 a year. This is an increase of 27.9 % in only three years. The BLS inflation index for the same period was only 10.3%.

Now with the general fund increasing $6,239,262 in only three years, where did the money go???

Money designated for teacher salaries went up $1,894,101 or 19%. In the 2003-4 budget teacher salaries were 44.4% of the total budget while the teacher salaries dropped to 41.4% of the 2006-7 budget. So they didn’t get it.

Support salaries increased $278,836 or 18.6%. This is the substitute teachers, mechanics, bus drivers, maintenance and custodial staffs. They’re dead last when it comes to getting money from the school system so they didn’t get it.

Social staffs went up $290,247 or 29%. These are the medical and psychology staffs. They got a big piece of the pie.

Now comes the administrative staff, that went up $913,370 or 45.3%. These are the clerks, secretaries, supervisors, assistants and assistants for the assistants. Bureaucracy is up 2.4 times more than teaching, hummmmm.

Clearly the spin is “teaching”… but the reality is “bureaucracy”. Teachers and children are on the billboards with tears crying for help…. but the bureaucrats are at the bank cashing the checks.

It is past time for the County Commission to request a comprehensive audit of the school system, require an explanation of the most recent audit findings and hold people accountable for their actions or lack of. -- Allen Barrett

Amazing - someone tells us that we have a major scam infecting our education system & about all we hear is a couple of idiots trying to shoot the messenger!

Makes me want to become the next guru in charge so I can pass a law to lock the idiots up in a remote looney ward. Guess we deserve what we get.

Suppose an employee finally has enough and chooses to retire rather than stoop to a lower level of behavior. That administrator is replaced by another administrator but because that administrator can't quite do the job they get them an assistant. Now when that doesn't work out too well either and the boss brings in help for the assistant of the first person then you have an assistant to an assistant. But it's only money! Allen Barrett

I'm sorry Mr. Barrett but I am still lost. I know the people who work in the Central Office. There are not "assistants. There is one person who has a secretary who works for her. The rest of the secretaries, which include the accounting dept. work for all supervisors who need assistant. Everyone else in the office is either a supervisor or director. The only two exceptions are the two consulting teachers who may be considered assistants by some but their is no assistant to an assistant.

Why don't you do a feature story in the "giles rebel" about the incompetence of professionals at the central office? I'm sure you are scoring points with those people by "suggesting" that they are inept at their jobs.
And you wonder why you came in a "strong fourth" in a four-man race in your district? You lost. Get over it!

What has Mr. Barrett losing the election have to do with his pointing out the problems of local goverment? It seems the one who keep bring this up have not got over the fact that he ran. Maybe they are afraid he will run again. He would probably make an excellent County Executive and he lives in Giles County. Mr. Barrett you are doing a good job of keeping the county informed. THANKS.

Maybe all of the assistants, assistants to assistants, score keepers, and goal post movers have been reassigned as helpers, maybe even bureaucrats in teacher's clothing.

Old forgotton wisdom - Natives found that the pelicans (whatever they are) could help mankind if they tied one rope around its neck & another around its foot. Pelican couldn't swallow fish & native can drag pelican to shore without strangling him. Native became prosperous fisherman. We and the pelican ate well.

Solution? Can you see "you know who" with one end of the rope around the neck & the other tied to a foot, turned loose in legislative plaza, drug out every couple of hours to a brinks truck, empty the pockets, & then, tossed back in for more! We wouldn't need any taxes! Eco freindly & no global warming!!!

On the contrary, WAB would make a very good county ecec. He's very honest, non-deceitful, owes nothing to nobody, has brains and has guts to stand up to people.

Where is a person who gets a mouth full of truth and spits it out? Where is someone who gets a mouth full of dung, swallows it, & then tries to feed it to everyone else? We found it - 5-1/54100 is the whinner!

WRONG! I merely pointed out a truth. Perhaps you are the one who would spit it out?
However, the bitter truth remains that your hero came in a "strong fourth" in a four man race. Is it not palatable to you? If so, go ahead and spit it out.

The subject is about insane out of control spending by a school board that should be focused on values and reason, not lies and bureaucracy.

Barrett may have been in fourth place, but he's way ahead of you & got you so bumfoozled you don't know one end from the other. If you can't remember if you're comming or going, it's best you just went! Brush your teeth, it might help.

Wrong again! The truth is, your hero lost (came in last place) in a four-man race. You may consider it dung or truth. Either way, it can't be denied. If in doubt, investigate the polling results, and see for yourself. Can you handle the truth or spit it out?

Your hero himself said he came in a strong fourth. Laughing here. You folks talk about accepting truths. That one is undeniable.

By the way, I'm not into name-calling, even though you call me an idiot. If I were, "clown" is a name I might call you. You would make a good one.

Idiot,
No one is denying he came in fourth or a strong forth. The problem is everytime he is right about something or points out something wrong or corrupt you blast him and bring up his fourth place finish. You know, at least he cared enough to run and try to make a difference. As far as name calling yes! You are an idiot and you have proven it over and over. If someone lies, what do you call them? If someone acts foolish or stupid, what do you call that person? 1) LIAR 2) IDIOT .
Please remember, I did not make these words up, I simply looked in the dictionary.

I'm impressed with your intelligence. You are to be commended.
However, you are wrong in accusing me of bringing up your hero's coming in a "strong fourth" in his district. Those were not my words. In fact, I think he himself arrogantly made that statement...without forethought obviously. I merely reminded you of that fact (aka truth) for which you seem to pop your cork. Isn't it a bit like the pot calling the kettle black for you to accuse me of blasting away when the "reporter" exposes some truth? Actually, those on your side seem to be the ones who lose control when a truth is cited. Think.

You call me strange because I disagree with you and find your hero worship amusing. I'm not trying to divert anyone's attention away from anything. I am not involved in county government and have no relatives there as far as I know.
You are just angry because those you like did not get elected and, in reality, have "shot themselves in the foot" as far as future elections go. And they, thinking themselves so much smarter than everybody else, have only themselves to blame. You see, most locals see through arrogance and dislike it as much as I do. So try to remember that a little humility goes a long way!

I'm sorry to disappoint you but the term "ignorant" refers to the uninformed. I know very well what you guys are up to. But you need to get past the jealousy and resentment and stop all the name-calling and character assassination attempts. All you are doing is sealing the future political fates of those enlightened ones you want so badly to be in charge of things.

Unlike what FC describes as "whiners", Fruitcakes has the power! Fruitcakes takes vitaminnies & loves the pretty thing seen in the mirror. Why does everyone pucker up and wince when the get a taste of fruitcakes? Fruitcakes wants you to love Fruitcakes, but fruitcakes tastes like crap! And so it is, everytime you lift the lid, the music plays & we hear "Don't you wish you were me?"

It's like a frog trying to stop traffic, hoping a fair maiden will come, kiss him, & turn him into a handsome prince. Instead, they don't know he exists - just another bug in the road. It's a kerplop - flop, & all that's left is a tread mark. It's just another day in what was the life of a dumb toad.

Anonymous.....As I said, you ought to consider a career change to stand-up comedian or to a writer of children's books or non-fiction novels. You have a vivid imagination and have proven to be hilarious, indeed!
Does it hurt when you want power and notoriety and have none? I'm sure it must. But keep striving for excellence. And, while you are at it, get over the last August elections. Most of your horses lost, but that's how it is and should be in a democratic society. Thank God you can't change that!

Non-fiction novels? Non-fiction novels? NON-FICTION NOVELS?
Maybe you should spend a little time with the dictionary instead of in front of wab's picture. I bet he knows that a novel and non-fiction are exact opposite types of writings.
As for the August elections you seem to be fixated on them, if you try really hard you might try to get into 2007 instead of lingering in 2006. Maybe the August elections were a “non-fiction novel”!!!!!!

You are once again wrong. I am well over the August elections. You don't see me on here belittling those who were elected. I wasn't totally happy with the results, but I know to move on and not become a troublemaker. Again, you guys act like crybabies who didn't get their way. Think. Then, move on.
By the way, both fiction and novels have one common thread of similarity. Neither of the two are true accounts. Hence, the term fictional. If I typed in non-fiction, surely you could excuse the eror. That may be hard for you, but I ask your indulgence.
