Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. One Positive Thread Deserves Another!

Somewhat to my surprise, the thread on "good things about Giles County" has thus far not been contaminated by "negative" remarks. To see if lightning can strike twice in the same spot, I'm launching this thread, dedicated to things that are praiseworthy in general, in or outside of Giles County.

I'll start with a Giles County topic: the nice fellow who cuts my grass, Danny Bowen. Mr. Bowen works fast, does a great job, and has amazingly reasonable prices. And the low, low price he quotes you includes everything: he provides the mower, the gas, and even an assistant that runs a weedeater. I know it's a little late in the lawn care season, but, if you need your grass cut, Mr. Bowen is your man... call him at 207-8623, or by cellphone at 652-4169. You won't be sorry!

For those of you in the same "need to lose weight" boat that I am in, I'd like to recommend an online "all natural, free range" beef merchant: Ney's Big Sky. I strongly endorse their "95% lean hamburger" which costs a modest $3.50 per pound plus shipping. A quarter pound patty of this tasty, but extra lean, meat has only 140 calories, which makes it terrific for any weight loss plan. Throw in an 80 calorie high-fiber wheat bun, and a 30 calorie slice of fat free cheese, and you've got the equivalent of a McDonald's Quarter Pounder.... with only half the calories!

Not only does Ney's Big Sky sell the leanest ground beef I can find, they have truly good customer service. For instance, in my last order, I ordered a bunch of 95% lean hamburger in one pound tubes, but received instead 80% lean hamburger in quarter pound patties. So, where's the good service, you may ask? Simple: I notified Neys about their mistake, and they were quite apologetic, and immediately shipped out a replacement order. Plus, when I offered to mail back the 80% lean meat (which was useless for my diet) they insisted that I keep it, at no charge.

I like doing business with a company that follows the "customer comes first" rule. And it is a comfort to be able to eat lean meat that comes from cows that not only aren't shot full of questionable chemicals and hormones, but -- in a humanitarian manner -- are allowed to graze outdoors, rather than living their whole lives cooped up in smelly barns. So, if you need some beef, and want the best, I suggest you go to:

Last, but certainly not least, I'd like recommend an excellent blog put out by a fellow Middle-Tennessean, Byron Smith. Blogging as "Byron 1776," Mr. Smith has a great knack for taking a complicated economic or political theory, and explaining it quickly and understandably, while using everyday language. This is easier said than done, and so I salute "Byron 1776" not only for making the effort to lay a foundation for a better world, but for doing such a good job in the process. Looking for a surefire wealthbuilding strategy that involves Congress? Curious about how John McCain can beat Obama? Then read Byron's blog, and find out for yourself:

Note: I'm not getting paid a thin dime for any of the above recommendations. I just wanted to share my enthusiasms, and I encourage the rest of you to use this thread to do the same. Positive comments only, please!

I highly recommend the local areas fruits, vegetables, and meats as well as goats milk and cheese, and eggs. Buy Tennessee and local products and you get a product that is fresh, healthy, and you can actually see how and where it is produced. Whatever is in season I buy it here. I also raise my own food from a small garden. We are so blessed to have farmers of all types willing to sell their foods. You can pre order your food online through picktnproducts.com (could be .org?) or you can buy tons of products from the Amish, through your local farmers here in Giles County. You can purchase your meats here and have it processed here. These are "free range" meats that are highly prized and many organic fruits and vegetables as well.
And, some of the FINEST craftsman and artist bar none live in this area to provide just about anything your imagination can employ. I always puff up with pride when someone mentions another great artist or writer in our area.

I would recommend going to the Bless Your Heart store on the square (across from Blue Bird Cafe) for local artists. She does great photos and sells candles as well as other local goods. I love her photos although her name escapes me. She also has some neat antiques and goods and is a very nice woman. There are so many artist doing anything from soaps to statues that unless you want a specific thing a list would be hard? Also, the chamber could gladly provide more.

No I haven't been in awhile? Is it not there now? My work is in Huntsville so I get to town less and less.

If you would like a certain subject discussed here all that's necessary is to contact me 363-1983 or to simply state on one of these entries what you would like to discuss. No forms to fill out not expense incurred and only time needed for me to read and post. Thanks Allen Barrett
