Giles County is beautiful, the rolling hills, green trees and streams everywhere. The average everyday people are warm and friendly and never neglect to wave to a passerby.

Giles County people are very caring. If someone has serious problems with medical expenses due to accident or sickness people try to help. Most people are friendly. Give a smile and you get one back.

Giles county is one of the most beautiful spots in the country. The hills are rolling and accessible to walk, ride, four wheel it, etc.

I can see for miles from the tops of my ridges or enjoy the rolling fields around the wood lots & timber areas. Little streams & springs bring the mysteries of frogs, lilly pads, marshy spots, & all of the wonders of nature.

It is filled with wildlife of all sorts - turkey, deer, squirrels, rabbits, and all types of birds. Spring and summer are filled with the replenishment of God's miracles - fawns that can "run like a deer" within a very short time after birth to little helpless birds, polywogs, and whirlygigs in the ponds.

Part of that process is noted herein with good people who will help one another for no reason other than doing it. It includes respecting one another's rights, ambitions, tastes, and desires to do their own thing.

That which is a hunter's paradise is likewise the paradise of a naturalist. It's a matter of choice within that which you possess.

The most precious elements are possible because Giles County is relatively unspoiled by political correctness. "Give me liberty or give me death" comes to mind. The threats are there, but still not running everyday life in Giles County. That is why I live here. That is why I will fight to keep it just like it is and has been.

There are millions of people who would give almost anything to live as we live. It is one of a few areas left that respects and admires freedom and independance. Yes, there is room and a welcome for all who seek the gifts of God over that of man and monuments.

I love Giles County. I am not a native and it took a while to warm up to the place but that was my fault, I did not want to be here!! The people are nice, generous and so friendly. I have seen so many people give so much to people in need whether it is from health or natural disaster. Butch White is the first to come to mind. There are some great people in the entire county. I will have to say that the Giles County Courthouse is one of the prettiest I have ever seen!

It is a place wrapped with history and tradition. The amount of natural beauty mixed with a love of the land is all around. The people are still willing to come to the aid of the less fortunate. There is a never ending fund raising effort all around for so many things. Yet, none seem to fall short despite the average to lower income of many. People want to help others more than themselves overall. This is the place that many other Tennessee towns have moved away from. Few towns still exist that have so much land and beauty without people on every square inch of it. Someday we might look back and "remember when" but for now this is a great place to call home.

There are wonderful artists in the area and a "can do" attitude. There is not much that the people of Giles County cannot do. A very self sufficient lot that respect privacy but are also good neighbors. They love and respect the land which is most beautiful. There are clean streams, spectacular views, rolling hills, historical farms, and interesting people with diverse backgrounds. Probably why so many artist enjoy the area? You can still find a hollow to get lost in or join a civic club or find your own niche. When I leave to visit friends and family and come back I realize how much we really have and how hard it is to find elsewhere. When they visit here they ask, why would you want to be here with nothing going on or to do? It takes someone who can see nature and a slower pace as valuable. God is Good!

Why can't we recruit new business? Is the presence of poverty frightening, or is it the pretense of affluence amongst poverty? Poverty is everywhere. Some build a wall around it so they can’t see it. Others wallow in their perceived success. Like all people, many in the grip of poverty are looking for a lifeline and are willing to sacrifice to change their lot in life. The lifeline is a two way flow linking educated theory to the practical minds that make things work because they never had means to pay someone to do things for themselves. Bottom line, no one likes a pretender, while everyone likes someone willing to help just because they can.

Is the simple life mistaken for simplemindedness? The link between the theory and the application is just as difficult for the educated to grasp as it is for the doer. The doer has scars to prove things don’t work, which saves the thinker a lot of wounds. The thinker may be able to see a new way that is better, but needs the doer to make it work. The mental capabilities may well be equal; they are simply different, yet complimentary more often than not.

Is casual independence and purpose mistaken for laziness? The best illustration is disinterested “Bubba” taking orders to do something stupid. The book says it works. Bubba knows it doesn’t & his buddies are going to laugh at him when it doesn’t. If Bubba likes you as a manager, he’ll whisper in your ear and you’ll find a better way to do it without something bad happening. Our area, including Giles County has a disproportionate number of git-er-done exceptional workers. If a company fails, it’s because of mismanagement!

If our surroundings change, will we lose that which we love? Without question, yes! Yes, Brentwood is beautiful, but it is sterile and man made. It may get hard to see in our cities, but look around and see what God has made, free for all to behold. It’s the painting of a little abandoned shack on the side of a hill that brings us to our knees. It’s an image of humility and being that has purpose for all. It’s the antithesis of political correctness and rubber stamp conformity. We are an area where man is not valued by their suit and protocol. It’s an area where the suit doesn’t even define personal wealth!

Real people will pay to come here, if they are real. Freeloaders come for the money. Have we ever advertised in hunting or outdoor magazines? It is a naturalist paradise. Keep it that way!

Maybe the above post asks a good separate topic question. Why can't we recruit new business in Giles County? What is it that we love here seems to be the natural assets and the areas people. A very marketable thing which is lacking in many fast growing areas. WAB or whoever is directing this web site (Kendrick McPeters?) please post the topic.
In what ways would you like to see this area grow and change and what businesses would you like to see move here?
Like any personal goal this area needs to set a future growth and back that which suits it's population and environment. Or in simple terms, "if you don't have a direction you are surely going to get lost".

616 excellent point. It begins with recognizing why the backbone of Giles County and other rural areas love where they live and why they sacrafice to stay put. The backbone is far deeper than the political shadow.

It's small and the people don't need a PHD to be important. If you look closer, it's the people, not the PHD that makes the real difference in what we are and what we acomplish. In fact there is space to know and interact with the direction of our community.

If you're 1 in a million, you're like a fly circling the buffet table - kersplat is what you get. That defines misdirected growth and development.

There will be no development benefiting the people of this county until they remove the corruption that currently controls the county. Those who put their personal wants above the real needs destroy not build.
The industrial recruiter, aka as mayor spear, makes nearly a hundred grand a year and drives a new SUV with our gas and has lost four industries for each one coming here while he's been the recruiter so what 's done, increase his budget?
He announced a year ago that Wendy's was coming but where are they. Only businesses coming to a dying place are undertakers.

Sounds the Spear's business is thriving! More tax / more treasure to loot. More need / more promises. More business closings / more need of a recruiter!

County needs to stop funding the economic development office. If the city wants to fund it, so be it, but the county is only getting losses for what we are paying out.

Positive requires ways to make things affordable and pleasing. The comments are overwhelmingly biased toward the simple things in life that are truely rewarding, not the bull crap about spending into oblivion to acquire status symbols that impress no one!

Get rid of spear and Jackson and you will see positive things happen in Giles County! Not being ripped off or having to keep one hand on your wallet would do wonders for our community. Put your head in the sand & you'll get run over!

Let's try this again. The subject what I like about Giles County. I love living in Giles County. Even though I am not originally from here the people have made me feel at home. I came from another small southern town and this one is much like that. Neighbors help neighbors, people stop on the highway to help people with car trouble, folks bring food, kind words and support for those with deaths. It is a great place to be. Now can we have other POSITIVE things to say about Giles County.

The giving nature of the area where people do and will step up for those in need. Take Butch White for instance who has probably given more food in this area than any I know. On September the 27th those who appreciate his kindness and generosity can enjoy music and food ($10 fee) at the Recreation Center. It will be great to visit with those who appreciate him and the area that we enjoy. Work on the bad but celebrate the good and this is a good way to do that.

I like that I can live in a little piece of history, be less than 5 minutes from most activities here, get involved in a variety of things, give and be appreciated, and meet people living here who are from myriad other places. Sometimes we've wondered if Pulaski is one of the favorite locations for the Witness Protection Program (that's a joke, folks) because we've met so many people from so many other places: "How'd you end up here?" "Oh, we were just driving through, and liked it and...." (Yeah, honey and how did you REALLY come to move here...) LOL...anyway...though us outsiders will never be considered as welcome and a part of things as those who have lived here all their lives, we recognize it's like that in most places and take it all in stride.
