What Is A Custodian That Doesn’t Clean Really Worth $32.00 An Hour?

It seems that 32 dollars an hour is what the GCHS football coach made this summer to keep the Field House open. That may not seem like much to some folks but it does to me and I have to wonder what it seems like to Coach Billy Holt that was paid NOTHING to keep the Gym open during the summer. Here's an interesting question, "which program makes the most money for the school, football or basketball and which burns up the most money? Maybe Coach Holt needs to glue a couple of pointed ends onto his basketball if he wants to get into the big money.
Other Coaches also got the same thing Coach Holt got for their efforts during the summer. Allen Barrett

Just wondering how you came up with that figure. Please break it down. Also, I would like to know how many hours Mr. Holt kept the gym open and who was allowed to use it. It would also be nice to see a detailed list of actual hours worked for each coach and what they actually did durning those hours.

While you are bashing all of the football coaches, (you must have football envy. Were you a little wimp in school?) Coach Holt has a basketball league every winter. You would be appalled at how much money he rakes in on that every year. Not that I care....I'm glad he can do it, but you could persecute every person in this county on something if you choose.

I look forward to the day that you see the Christian light, and can see the good in people. Also, It would be nice if you could become a positive influence.

What does a winter basketball league have to do with a coach making $32 an hour during the summer? Does the football coach do a camp and how much does he make on that? The problem is that the football is being over compensated. He is being paid for lots of things. It is public knowledge so how much extra is the coach paid. How much was his total salary for 2007-2008? That does not count the money the "booster" club pays him. The booster club states that they are not just for football. Do they compensate the other sport coaches too?

Did I not read this right. I thought Mr. Barrett was wondering why Mr. Holt (a basket ball coach) didn't make as much as the football coach.

What was wrong with that?
I guess a lot of us are wondering why football is more important that basket ball.

No I wasn't a wimp, I am a female and like basketball better than football.
Football is ok by me for those that like it, just like to see every coach treat fairly. If you know why a football coach should get more money explain it instead of jumping on Mr. Barrett. Since me and a lot of others don't know anything about football it would be nice to hear something explained instead of going off like a rocket.

What does being a fan of either sport have to do with one coach making an outrageous amount of money. I would love to hear what his yearly salary is including the booster club money. Why should one coach be paid more to do extra work than the others. If one coach has the gym open and the other has the football building open why wouldn't they both be paid the same amount. Yes, I am a wimp, I am also a woman and proud of it. I have a child that played both sports but I did not think that one was more important than the other. It is obvious that others do. The football coach was lured in here from Alabama with the promise of more money and a job for his wife and his brother. I'm sure that if any other member of his family needed a job they would be working for the school system also. She brags about that herself. What happened to equality?

If it is according to public policy & they did it in the open, with open opportunity, it's ok.

If it isn't & jobs are given to people without competetively offering the jobs to Giles County residents, it's called corruption, which is a lot worse that "unfair".

WELCOME TO THE GC SCHOOL MAFIA! Your tax & job opportunity dollars working against you!

This stems back to part of Coach Johnson's term at GCHS. That was part of his deal. It carried over to the now football coach. Coach Holt isn't the only one being screwed. Coach Smith and Coach Taylor at Richland are also not being paid to keep the gyms and athletic depts open all summer for no pay. Just get a copy of the school system salary for each person in the system. You would be amazed at some of the summer salaries given to people. Not only does GCHS head football coach get the extra from COUNTY but his wife has a job, his brother has a job and he has 9 paid coaches to help him out and two volunteers. What does Richland have? Bottom line is to much energy is spent on sports and not enough recognition for academic success. Do we have academic homecoming or parades. NO! Do we have highly recognized academic banquets, NO! We can't even get books on time for children to start school. Sports is one thing but an education is forever. Does sports really boost the morale for the school. Yes, for the active athletes and staff that likes sports. The rest of the students and staff get their noses rubbed in it. Giles County isn't the only system, all systems hold athletics in high regard. Just think how great it would be to have such response in academics. Who knows more academics might find us a decent president someday.

You are right about Richland. They won't have the coaches or players because Jackson bribes coaches to come to GCHS. The good players are also inticed to come to GCHS from Richland to play football. Richland does not count in this county. I have no afilliation with either school but I am not blind either.

As a member of the Giles County school system, I can tell you that there is frustration with the amount of attention and expense given to the GCHS football program. Many of the boys that play on the team are great boys who give great effort in the classroom and on the football field. By the same token, some of the boys make a mockery of the classroom, get into scrapes with the law, and still get to run on the field on Friday night. You learn to take the good with the bad. The football program can only get away with what the school administration and the school board allow. You can't blame them for riding the gravy train- blame the ones approving the ride.

As for the Richland vs GCHS thing, you do not have a valid argument there. For years it was said that Richland was given advantages that schools in the southern part of the county did not receive. If GCHS is receiving some extra perks for football, it is only long paybacks for lots of perks that Richland has received over the years. To say that Richland doesn't count in this county is a strong overstatement that cannot be backed up. Once Richland gets back to winning in the tradition of the teams from the late 80s, you won't be making those type of statements. Don't be a hater just because GCHS is having a good run. As for students coming to GCHS from Richland, from what I understand, that usually stems from want of not wanting to have a certain teacher or two up there, or before, Ms. Mc left, a desire not to deal with her for some reason or another. Now that she is gone, it will be interesting to see if the wave of students from RES to GCHS slows down. As for GCHS inticing students to come there for ball, the only one that I am aware of that you might be referring to is Bo Wallace. For whatever reason Bo came to GCHS, that was a decision that his parents made- it shouldn't really be the business of anyone else. If it doesn't affect you or your child, why do you worry about what students go where? Boost your own child up and don't let them believe that the team can't be successful if someone decides to go to a different school.

As for the

As a member of the Giles County education system, I'd just like to applaud an earlier post about the football players who create havoc in the classroom. I say kick them off the team if they are rude and disrespectful to teachers and other students. The same applies to those in student government and stc. I personally know of one kid in student governmentwho should NOT be allowed to represent his school in anything. He is absolutely the rudest I have ever encountered. It's just a shame that he is allowed to be a member of student government or anything else for that matter until he begins to behave himself, not just around certain teachers and students but ALL of them!

9:40 you are saying that two wrongs make a right. Giles County and Jackson have not recruited coaches for Richland and with the zoning the students cannot go from GCHS to Richland even though there is no longer over crowding. That sounds like it is a one way street. I said that I don't have a child or any other affiliation with Richland but I do know wrong from right. Jackson went to GCHS and he wants the best ONLY for that school. He recruited Sheila Frost which was a joke and he has recruited the football coaches and continues to do so. The GCHS football coach gets extra pay and the coaches at Richland do not. GCHS has a giant field house where is Richland's? If the GCHS coach can make $10,000 in the summer why can't Richland's? Do you see anything wrong with all this?

As for washing the uniforms at GCHS, the washer and dryer were donated to football with moneies that were raised by football parents. This does not belong to the "school!"
This is the craziest blog system I have ever heard. I have never seen so many people who worry about other people as here. Does it bother you if someone in this county makes more money or if someone has something you don't? Why! It seems as though, it hasn't been to long ago that the people in Pulaski wanted a football program rebuilt. We get great men in our town who works hard with the same kids you dont want to give a chance and meets them where they are in life and welcomes them to become a part of something good.
Something eles, to those who have students in a class who seems to be difficult to handle why punish them from sports or any other extra curr. Take care of it yourself. Let the punishment come from you, stop making everyone eles be the nad guy. If you take sports away then you are allowing these kids to have the extra time to get into things they should not.

Nobody cares where the washer and dryer came from but why does that coach get paid to wash uniforms when other coaches don't get that at other schools. The school system has supplements that cover coaching, that is what they should get paid no matter which school. Why would a coach at GCHS get paid more than a coach at Richland? That makes no sense. Where is GCEA? I know there are pay scales and they are supposed to cover what coaches get.

Not sure where you are getting your numbers but the membership is as strong as always. The person at the high school (GCHS) who is complaining is not a member and the person he is complaining about is a member. It is very hard to get a member to file a grievance against another member to benefit a non-member. If this were to be argued, the only solution would be to remove the money from the person who was paid incorrectly, not to pay the other coaches (since this is against the contract). Which is another reason why no one is willing to file the grievance. If you are a member and you are willing to file contact your local president and get the ball rolling, if not then LEAVE the association out of this fight. The association and it's local leaders are out there risking their jobs every day fighting for the teachers and support staff, please stop acting like they are doing nothing. Again I ask, "what have you done to stop the over payment", who have you contacted to question about this issue (other than this blog)?

I think you can leave the support staff out of it too. You don't negotiate for them so what do you do. Yes they get liability insurance but the board supplies that. I don't want all coaches to get the big bucks just equality. It should not be hard for someone to go before the board and ask why the money is being paid. They don't have to be a member to do that. Did you see your pres at the board meeting the other night? She looked really bad on TV. Her hair was standing straight up like she just crawled out of bed and she had a sloppy t-shirt on. Real good representation for the teachers. Maybe you should ask her to try and look like a professional is she is going to represent you. If you don't believe me on that one check out the local programming for the video.

4:54 - it has been said before, but I will say it again. GCEA cannot bargain for support staff because the SCHOOL BOARD REFUSES TO ALLOW IT!!!! Until the support staff bands together, takes there collective selves to a board meeting and demand from the board that GCEA be allowed to bargain for them, there is nothing GCEA can do. One or two going to the board meetings means nothing. The support staff has to band together as a large, collective group, and make their wishes known. But, then, if you are not a GCEA support staff member, why do you care? If you are a GCEA support staff member, I am sure you know what needs to be done to get the board to bargain with GCEA on your behalf.
