ONE RESULT OF FROM THE COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING

Today the Financial Management Committee was totally sabotaged by turning its control over to the school system. While there were many attempts and successes at destroying the effectiveness of this very worthwhile and productive committee, today the final nails were driven into its heart.

The County Commission ignored the opportunity to improve and strengthen both the Budget and Financial Management Committees by refusing to appoint non-commissioners and expanding the membership of these committees. Some brave commissioners cast their vote for change and supported a highly respected former comptroller of a Fortune 500 company but they were out voted by the ugliness of self serving out of touch commissioners stuck in the pockets of cronies.

With the appointment of Commissioner Rose Brown, a school system employee, along with Commissioner Bill Holt, a school system employee, Commissioner Roger Reedy, a dependent of a school system employee, and Commissioner Tommy Campbell, the Director of Schools will have much support for his agenda. Already the Financial Management Office is packed with former school employees.
As these join the Highway Supervisor and County Executive on the board what hope is there left for the citizens of Giles County? I fear very little.

Are these commissioners so forgetful or are they mostly plain old dumb? Bill Holt, Tommy Campbell and Rose Brown all came out AGAINST the Financial Management act. Remember the newspaper ads and radio ads? So them wanting to serve on the committee must be only to attempt to sabotage what the citizens of the county voted for TWICE. Tommy Campbell was on this committee when they were searching for the Finance Director and this was the same committee members that caused the county the discrimination lawsuit which cost us $70,000. Go figure.

Take it easy on Tommy Campbell - He has more recently was critical of the book cooking enterprise, maybe a very good omen to have him there! We don't know what Ms. Brown will do - give her a chance. Have we forgotten what just happened to the rubber stamp school board?

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. Voter action says the voters are fed up with financial shennagins. When that turns to outright anger, chances are real good that some unwitting followers are going to get caught up in something they will regret for the rest of their life.

When you look out the window and everything is wet and there are drops of water falling out of the sky everywhere do you wait to go outside and get wet before you decide it's raining or do you get your umbrella and take it with you.
Point is a wait and see attitude would normally be a good idea but with this bunch of crooks it's easy to see into the future and it ain't so bright.

Do you think that anyone wants the Financial Management Office to fail? I did not vote for it but it is there and there is too much invested in it to fail now. I hope that it goes well and there will be some money saved even though I don't see how. Don't put blame on commissioners because of where they or their spouse work. They don't want failure of the Financial Management Office either. You are jumping to conclusions. Did these commissioners ask to be put on these committees? Did they nominate themselves? I doubt it.

11:03 Unquestionably you are right - point is the unknowns may help if provided logic & reasonable reasons to avoid the culture of deception and destruction.

Jackson defines evil - very convincing, conniving, & extremely good at dragging good people down to his level of corruption. Got to agree with both - the seeds of destruction were sown, are growing, and will soon crowd out any flowers that may have existed in financial management. A very clouded future??

Improvements have occurred, but anyone with a brain, who can read, knows corruption ruled what happened with the last minute 2008 budget amendments and the 2008-9 financial plan. A simple fact!

As for Holt - an educated person who could really make a difference in this community, but no backbone or guts - damned to plow & cultivate Jackson's weed garden! He's not alone, but they are no longer a majority.

In the end analysis, Jackson, Holt, the old school board mafia, and a very few others are inconsequential compared to the number of voters and citizens who really care about the finances, morality, and education of our community!

If one believes that the only way to educate is by spending more money, it's a small leap of faith to use any means to get more money, including falsifying financial statements, lying to the citizens, and eventually losing all discernment between right and wrong. That's primed & ripe for a leader who has visions of grandeur and has no moral restraints. Sound familiar?

If you can pile dung a mile high upon such a leader, it slides off as if there is none. In other words, you can't embarass them because they don't have that gene! You have to get rid of them or everything they touch will turn to dung, because that is their aurora! It's either fight or drown in dung!

Anon. 6:41 The commissioners who want to be on the Fin. Com. tell the County Exec. and she reads their names off at the meeting as being nominated. Others can be nominated at the meeting. If there are over 4 names the commission votes on which 4 they want to serve on that committee. Yes, those people asked to be on it.

11:30 that is not true, they did not ask to be on it. They all did not ask to be on it. There may have been suggestions from others but they did not ask for it. You are wrong. Sorry, but I know the facts on this one.

11:30 is correct. Any commissioner wanting to be on the Fin. Man. committee submits their name to Vanzant. Then others can be nominated from the floor, including members of the public. I understand Accountant Don MacDermid was nominated and received 7 votes! Good job. However, he was knocked out on the 2nd voting. He would have been great on that committee due to his knowledge and experience in government accounting, but the majority of our current commissioners dont want anybody with brains. Thanks to whichever commissioner nominated Mr. MacDermid. I hope this gets published in the paper so more people can read and understand what this county is dealing with as far as our representation goes.

Commissioners CAN ask that their names be submitted. The point is that is not always the case. Just because someone gets on a committee does not mean they asked for it. Don't throw all commissioners into one pool!! From what I have heard and seen of MacDermid he is more than a loose canon. I have read several of his letters to the editor and they were full of crap.

6:43 name one & add your name & documentation with it. "No new money", "No increase in years", "Spending two to three times the inflation rate, but nothing for teachers & workers who need it", "no money for busses", and on to infinity!

Can you think of anything more foul than corrupting the education system? Can you think of something more important than stopping it? - You have that answer, why not say it - "raise taxes, waste more money, & cackle like a hen who just dumped in her nest"!

As for the commissioners, we have some of the best! If you are using your influence or voting your conscience to pass something that is misrepresented you have a problem. Coercion & fear of job or reprisal is corruption. If it's really important to you and you expose and correct the misrepresentation, you and your position are legitimate.

I doubt the few who knuckle under are proud of it & on this blog trying promote more corruption, like you are -

"6:43" sounds like the knuckle cruncher or one or two of the dunces nose to tail behind the cruncher.

If a commissioner gets notiminated for something and doesn't want to serve, why don't they say "No thanks" and let someone else serve who would like to. The only one I remember taking their name off a nomination was Ms Flacy. (Takes a woman!) Then, if you read the paper, you would know that Campbell said to Wilburn in open meeting something to the effect about their discussion prior to the meeting about Wilburn being on the budget comm. Both these commissioners liolated the Sunshine law. So, whats new?

There's an open meetings law and an official violated it????????
Does that mean the school board will no longer be able to go off by themselves discuss business and call it a "retreat"?
Some progress is being made with the commission, this is the first year that appointments have been made "in public" but it did not take long watching the commission Monday to understand just how much work was done behind the scenes.
Thanks to Scott Spear for his efforts to bring the process into the open. There was only one challenge made to a committee appointment during the entire meeting and that was through the audacity of Commissioner Wilburn to seek appointment to the financial committee. In the end the upstart was put back in his place and the old guard remained unchanged. Think the good ole boys in Clarksville, Memphis and Nashville have anything on these boys and girls in Giles County, better think again. Ask Rosalind Kurita what happens when you don't walk in lock step with the bosses and we sure got some bosses, even if they are two-bit. Allen Barrett

Don M, are you the one they wanted on the committee? Like I said loose canon! You let 6:43 have it for taking up for someone. I don't know who you are accusing them of being. Don't jump on people who are trying to be civil. That is not what is needed in our government. I'm glad you did not get on the committee because chaos would have reigned.

6:47 I guess I was the one.

6:43 claimed I said & wrote untruthful things. I provide documentation for what is said & give anyone the opportunity to pick it apart. 6:43 obviously doesn't understand or have the ability to criticize anyone. Nothing wrong with challenging anyone, self included, it's part of a logical learning process. 6:43 is more obviously part of the deception problem. I don't like liars and connivers - sorry about that, but that's how it is.

I'm glad you're glad, because I'm glad too. I do respect anyone serving the community. I feel honored that anyone would consider me to help the community, but didn't ask for it. I have considerable respect those who asked if I would help and I can not and will not refuse them whatever they need if at all possible.

The cannon has never been loose. If you read any of it, the target is pretty obvious - the reasons & back up go with it. No, I'm not afraid to let it rip when necessary. What is your argument? Is it right to lie and steal for the children, while skimming it until the children really get nothing but bad example & perverted morality & told they'll have to walk to school?

As for chaos -I'll provide some enlightenment for you, again, later. Maybe, you will openly read it & join the fight against chaos.

To the anonymous of the 18 Sept 3:41 post.

After looking through all the posts in this thread the only one that mentions Commissioner Wilburn was mind, as it seems you were taking exception to my comment.

This is what I wrote, "There was only one challenge made to a committee appointment during the entire meeting and that was through the audacity of Commissioner Wilburn to seek appointment to the financial committee. In the end the upstart was put back in his place and the old guard remained unchanged. Think the good ole boys in Clarksville, Memphis and Nashville have anything on these boys and girls in Giles County, better think again". This was in no way a criticism of Commissioner Wilburn but of the process by which he was denied the opportunity to serve on the finance committee, which he was also denied last year. If you would ask him I'm sure he would tell you that after the meeting I thanked him for his effort.
Perhaps you might want to be less defensive and critical of me before finding out what the facts are in a matter. Allen Barrett

This coward doesn't care what you say, Mr. Barrett, they just want to criticize you. They are probably afraid that you will one day pull the curtain on them as well. They always turn your statements around and make them to suit theirselves.
