Ron Shirey Leaving Giles School System
It was announced that Mr. Ron Shirey a long time Giles County educator is leaving his position, effective 5 September, for a similar position in Marshall County. What would make a person with so much invested in this school system decide to leave for basically the same job in another county?

My guess is he is going for more money- although I can't see that it is too much more than he was making here. Must be something more to it. I hear Marshall Co. is in a mess - Sounds like a very risky move to me! Don't worry- he'll come crawling back and you can bet he'll get whatever job he desires when he does!
If Marshall Co is in such a mess what does that say about us since so many people are now sending their kids to school over there and the teachers are leaving too.
Fact is until TJ is dismissed we'll continue to lose out on everything but sports and they're gaining on that.
Actually, Marshall County is finally cleaning up it's act. The county commission let it be known they would not fund the school budget until the director was let go. The county commission was kind enough to provide the $$ to pay out the contract to send the previous director on down the road. They now have a new director who may be just what the doctor ordered. Time will tell. Now, if Giles County Commission had the same stuff, maybe we could get positive change also. But, who would take the place of the king on the hill? I cannot think of one person presently in Giles County School System that would be any better than what we have. And that's sad.
I can think of a whole number of people who would be better than the present director. There are at least three mechanics in the bus garage that could do better. More than half the teachers could do better and most of the custodial staff would be an improvement. None of those people would have citizens arrested for asking to speak at a meeting or have teacher morale at rock bottom or operating in such secretive underhanded ways.

Buying out Jackson's contract would be money well spent by the commission, rather than some of the other waste they vote to spend constantly. Who would replace him - dont ya remember Bill Holt thought he had the job in the bag? That would be going from the firepan into the fire. I agree some of the mechanics could do a better job than Jackson, but dont ya have to have classroom and/or some type of administrative experience? Bev Murray could answer this. How about it Bev?
I'd vote for & support Bev. in a heart beat. What a change that would be!!! Honesty, integrity, & some common sense!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought Beverly retired from the school system with a disability. How can she suddenly go back to work for them? I don't think she ever held a job for more than two or three years before she took off for a couple of years. i don't think she could take the stress of a directors job.
430 Talk about handling stresss? She's treated like a leper by a board of education that is hell bent on screwing the public and the school system. She has the guts to stand up for what is right & the openness to discuss matters with everyone, not just the current director and his puppets.
Management and leadership are gifts you can't buy with degrees or experience in following mindless protocol. She has the capability to run the system, deal with the many problems we have, and repair the damage done to public relations by the current administration! Nobody trusts Jackson or his followers!
If Jackson was gone you can bet Bill Holt will be put in the job.

It is definitely awful news that Shirey is leaving. He does an excellent job and will be really hard to replace him. I got it from a good source close to him that money is one of a couple of reasons he's leaving. He'll be making over $15,000 more in the new job and not have all the other duties besides what his job title is supposed to be like the central office staff here have too. Unless the people of this county wake up and start paying teachers, including principals and supervisors a better salary, we will loose more good ones like him. Some people on here talk about how much the administrators make, but it's way less then those in other counties make. Teachers make less here but administrators make even more less then in other counties. The other reason is he's tired of some board members and community working against the director instead of with him. With the new ones just elected he figures its going to get even worse and board meetings will be about everybody's agenda and out to vote against the director no matter what and not about working togehter like they should be. That's why he left. We will soon see if he's right. How many more do we have to loose before people wake up.
The whole reason some worked so hard to get new blood on the board was to take away the dictatorial of the board away from Mr. Jackson. Under his domination teacher morale is at rock bottom and salaries except for administrators have not kept pace. Sadder part is money was given by the county for teacher raises but was used for other pet projects. The only real growth that has been experienced in the school system is in the central office, and Bill Davis salary, with no increase in school accomplishments.
Each year the audits show major problems in a number of areas many repeated year after year. The graduation rate continues to decrease well below the state goal.
Support staff especially watch the years go by without pay increases while some secretaries get huge raises.
Teachers have people bumping into each other trying to look over their shoulder and micro manage.
Until the board begins to act responsibly and put some controls on TJ the situation will only get better. I really think he could do the job with proper supervision from the board, but as it is he is far to focused on personal benefits and accomplishments.
Teachers have more and more paper work to do every year. The same is said for supervisors and administators. For every piece of paper a teacher does it is multiplied at the supervisor level. The federal government is causing problems at all levels. The NCLB is one example. It would be wonderful if all children were on the same level but that cannot happen. A mentally challenged child will never be on the same level with the average child. Unfortunately they are not capable of it. The should be helped to the best of their ability but that does not mean normal. The school system does not work miracles and cannot "fix" every child.
When the education system is spending two to three times more than the inflation rate, you know we have a huge management problem!
By definition, all of that money is provided by taxpayers who should be able to expect some form of technological improvement every year!
You are not teaching when your day is consumed by paperwork. If salary costs are increasing 2 or three times the inflation rate, while employees are getting salary increases less than the inflation rate - you have a problem of adding people when volume is not changed! It's called bureaucracy - a sure way to fail! A fact under the direction of Tee.
If you're supporting the director, you're supporting your problem, not a solution! If you don't know the difference, you'll never solve the problem & deserve the lousy pay you get!

Murrey did retire with a disability. It is called Fibromyalgia. It can be controlled and something you learn to live with. She has done well with controlling the illness or she would have already croaked with the school board and all that she deals with. People like myself go to her knowing she will listen and at least try to help. She does alot of the behind the scenes work know one knows about in helping children, parents and teachers. Go Bev!!!!
Bev is one of the top 3 trouble makers in Giles County. I believe that the only reason she is putting on such a show with the school board is because she is delusional, and wants Tee Jackson's job.

Hello my name is Beverly Greene Murrey. And I'm very proud to be a Greene. My Father was Dude Greene. When he died he was referred to as a Gentle man's Gentle man. Yes my brother is Charles Greene and Kathy Young is my sister. We have another sister named Kay Wells. You forgot to get enough info to bash her as well. What my brother has done to you is between you and my brother. Don't bring in the rest of the family because he may have gotten the best of you. Yes he has alot of enemies but when my husband was killed he cried like a baby. He helped take care of me and be my strength as well as Kathy. If it hadn't been for my whole wonderful Greene family I don't know if I would have survived what I have been through in my life.
As for the school board I want what is right and best for the children of Giles County. So if I have to speak up and stand up for what is right then I will do so. I also have been a teacher and until you have walked in anyone shoes that deals with some of the students and adults they have to deal with then keep your opinion to yourself.
And the Greene's did not run off Mr. Shirey. Call him directly like I do with people to get the facts straight. Stop talking about things you don't know about until you go to the source yourself. That way rumors will not go any farther.
As far as being Director of Schools at this point and time I am not interested. In 2011 I may be but doubtful. Hopefully by then you and others that don't have anything else to do but bash a family can work with Eddie Bass to get our right back to vote for Superintendants elected by the people and not an appointed Director. That is my biggest gripe. I lost a right to vote.
I'm also related to the Whitworth's, and Holley's. So start on them now. And I'm not the only Greene on the board.

I served on the County Commission with Mr. Greene and I did not always agree with some of the ways he handled things. But during his time he saved the tax payers of Giles County more money than ever before. He is problely one of the most intelligent men I have ever met and he has always been nice and courteous to me.
He also won his election by a great number so that must say something about how he is liked.
If you are so well liked youself please take a stand and run for office. That way the people and you can see how well you are liked.
Either you are a very unhappy jealous person wishing you could have him as a friend or just plain miserable.

Beverly and her family like most of us have shortcomings and there is always someone waiting to pounce like a flea to focus and enlarge that shortcoming when they don't have any intelligent, logical position to debate from.
Unfortunately many in this county are so afraid of a bit of criticism they never attempt anything, however many excel at whining. Beverly has taken on a task that most would never even consider; in fact most won’t even attend school board meetings. She may not be the greatest, the most articulate, the most charming or the most anything but she is there, she is committed, does her homework and stands firm when she is right. She has accomplished far more positives in a couple of years than some on the board have ever attempted. By her efforts the board has become more serious in their responsibilities.
Whatever else Charles may be he at least tried to accomplish something good for this county. When he was on the county commission he may have irritated some folks, including me at times, but he worked very hard restructuring the county debt and saved the county a bundle of money. He gave up doing any business with the county during that time at a rather high personal financial cost. As chairman of the budget committee he allowed open discussion and responded to ideas from the public. He did not close off debate simply because he disagreed with the speaker. I don’t know the other siblings but this is my experience with these two individuals and overall I have been impressed. Allen Barrett

Was it really Charles Greene who restructured the county debt in order to save money? I heard it was Ms Bowman who met with a bunch of the commissioners and suggested the restructuring and this was told to me by one of those commssioners. Bowman is the woman who applied for the finance director job but they already had Garner picked out even though Bowman could run circles around Garner.

You are right on each point in your post. My point was that Mr. Greene as a commissioner and chairman of the budget committee had the good sense to use the talents and knowledge of others in an effort to benefit the whole county. He did make sacrifices that greatly benefited the county.
In the current administration there are very few commissioners willing to listen to anything but their own echoes. Certainly the county executive has refused to listen or even accept services by a number of highly qualified talented retirees who offered their talents and services at no cost. Allen Barrett

I hate that Coach Shirey is gone. Hell, I wish he was the Director of Schools. I attended Richland and graduated in 1990. This man has gone above and beyond the call of duty for the children in our school system, past and present. We lost a good one, again. But what else is new?

Well, it looks like we got rid of Kathy Norman as Chairman. It seems that things are moving in a positive direction possibly for the school system. Now, if we could only get Jackson out. Jim Greene sure is a disappointment in every sense of the word as is Mike Young. Perhaps we need to start a new thread regarding the new School Board.

Nasty things were said about Bev and Charles. If I look for bad things, here's what comes to mind. 1) Lying to teachers, claiming there was no money for raises, while there was way more than enough to give them a COLA raise without raising taxes! 2) Lying to the public every year claiming there isn't enough money to provide essential education resources, without a big tax increase, when there is really more than enough to to do it all. 3) Falsifying financial records to understate tax revenue, to back up the lies in 1 and 2. 4) giving big raises to a few for no logical reason. 5) Promoting those who bleat a lot like sheep wanting food. We could fill this blog with endless specifics, but let's just say we have a healthy case of corruption and nastiness. The figurehead of this insanity and a core of loyal hard core followers grant themselves their every wish! They define all of the nasty things said about the Greens & more!
That brings us to the question of what the Greenes did to infuriate those who spew so much venom. It appears that Charles saved the county a bundle of money, and managed to keep it out of the hands of the wasters & spenders. He discussed things with citizens, provided information, gave honest opinions, and managed all this in spite of great pressure to join forces with spenders & wasters who throw people in jail for complaining about spending and wasting!
Bev appears to have the same genetic defects of calling a spade a spade, trying to save the county from waste & corruption, not liking liars, & thinking about the children who are cast into this sea of corruption.
We clearly have a choice - 1) Either save the save the county from corruption and waste; or 2) save the corruption, waste, & educational pollution from the Greene's & those horrible troublemakers! Think Green - it's really an environmental issue! (Circle (environ) the (mental) cases - run them off & live happily ever after.

Saying Shirey got a $20,000.00 pay raise by going to Marshall County is as big a joke as Obama saying this morning in Pa. that during the Clinton years the average salary went up $75,000.00. Maybe it did in one of those extra seven states he visited.

And, yes, he is making more money, while doing much less. He evidently wasn't one of the "chosen" ones, as his job just kept getting duties piled on it. He wore many, many hats in Giles County. Mainly because certain whiners at the central office said they were "too busy" to do everything their job description asked of them. I can't blame him for hitting the road.

Just a figure I heard from a reliable source. If it were me, I would have gone for $20 if it got me away from you bunch of worthless scumbags - maybe he did also.
Mr. Shirey is going to Lewisburg for several reasons. I went to the source. He will get alot more money for 11 months, when he was getting less for 12 months in Giles. He had alot of things other than job description that got old. His wife is working in Marshall and they may move someday when children are out of school. You can still lust for him at the GCHS football games where is a vol. coach.

Once again, money seems to be an ever ending problem from the view of tax payers and school system employees! Both face the identical same problem - WASTE, INEFFICIENCY, AND CORRUPTION!
If spending ranges between two and three times the inflation rate, It means two things!
First, revenue has to be increasing two to three times inflation to inable the spending. (true for 2004-5-6, and 7)! We don't need more money - we need fiscal responsibility!!!!!
SECOND - Spending has increased more than that revenue, by $500,000 in 2008 and well over $1 million projected for 2009! And, we are losing good people because there isn't enough left over after the hogs are sloped?? The wrong people are leaving!!!!
THINK ABOUT IT! Can't pay good employees a decent wage that keeps up with inflation plus a little more when revenues are up a LOT MORE???????

Braden got a $3k raise which is exactly what her position at the board would have gotten; The position got the raise, not her, it was coming anyway
Why would Braden's position be getting a $3,000 raise when county employees didn't get a raise? And since the position was transferring to the central finance office how could the school dept or the finance office make a decision for a raise of that amount? I think the writer of 3:57 is wrong on that one.
Jim Greene's comments shed a little light on past school board problems.
I would say that honesty and intergity emphatically trump any caution "... to not do or say things that can harm the board." The board's obligation is to the citizens! HELLO!!
The concern over "Bev's finer points", can be nothing but fear of truth and openness, two of many major failings of the prior board of education.
We too, know how the past boards operated and we're not going to tolerate contempt for the public, falsification of funding documents, and cheating & lying to employees while spending money like drunken idiots!
The chairperson has lots of authority in conducting board meetings. Instead of openly violating Constitutional rights of citizens, maybe meetings can be openly conducted with some form of accountability and genuine purpose.
Who other than Mrs. Murrey has the integrity and grit to deal with the corruption that has made GC education a sick joke?
If Jim Green is a successful businessman with a higher education, he knows what has been going on. Not dealing with corruption because it might damage the board's reputation, destroys the objective of education! Followers don't challenge leaders - hopefully, he'll follow Bev's lead.

Braden got a $3000 raise to get her even with the lowest paid job at the Financial Management Office. Van Zant told her she would be getting a bigger raise. Braden bragged about that herself. That is why she decided to keep working after all.

Why is he still helping coach Giles County and works for the Marshall County School System. Seems like a conflict of interest. When he left for Marshall County he should have been relieved of coaching duties.
Volunteer coach is just that, a volunteer position. It has nothing to do with his job. Why is it a conflict of interest. He works at attendance in Marshall County that does not mean anything else. He has a son on the football team here so he is sure not going to do anything bad to Giles County's football team. The boys on the team want Shirey. He is a great person and the team were upset to think that he was leaving and would not be helping with the team anymore.
On behalf of the football players at GCHS I would like to say we are fortunate to have Coach Shirey as a volunteer. He puts in so much time along with the other coaches. He cares about us and we care about him!!! We love you Coach Shirey and thanks for helping to make us a better team.

Have you ever heard of the Child Development Center. Just ask who got it off the ground and got a home for the children. Who was a major player in getting David Little out as Director of Schools. Just ask around and find out. Who is the person that people send special needs children to when they can't get anything done in the school system. Who gives to people when they are in need and ask for nothing in return? You want to think she is a mean person, but when you speak of her you should speak of her with integrity and not against her. She did something wonderful for a friend of mine when she couldn't afford to do it herself. The only thing she asked to person to do was rent the movie and learn from Pay It Forward. More people should learn to be like that.

On Sept 3 I commented on this blog site. Since then I have been out of town for several days. Got a call from a friend today and said I needed to read the blog. So here I am reading something that started out not pertaining to me. Those of you who defended my family thank you. The rest of you have your opinion and you are entitled to it. BUT!!!I feel I need to clarify a few things. Yes I have worked when I wanted to. Why did I take off those years--highly recommended by Special Education instructors saying if you an take off every few years you won't have burn out. Fortunately I could afford to do so at the time. My taking off gave others an opportunity to get their foot in the door for a teaching position. So I feel I helped someone getting a job. I was able to be room mother and do extra things with my girls. So it wasn't from laying out or being lazy it was for someone else.
I did retire early due to being diagosed with Fibromyalgia. I have it under control due to exercise. I worked at Curves and missed only if someone was sick and needed me to take them to Dr. or hospital. I did not lay out of work and worked more hours than I was paid for. I had one woman not show up for work so I got up and opened in my gown and house shoes.
I now have a fitness center in Rogersville, Al. Yes, I need a second job to help keep it open because the women love the program I have set up for them. I hate to let them down with this program but I can't keep working 12 hour days and trying to get home several nights a week to be with my family. I also have kept up with education and miss working with educators. With me working another job then I can give several people jobs at the fitness center. I don't know where the above got there info but they only stated half. I don't lay out of work and I work more hours than expected of me. Educator's jobs are like a Mother's job. We get up and get started before others do, and we work long hours even when we get home at night. A Mother and an educator continue to work with children's grading, dealing with families and being a parent.
I am very independent and I want to make my own way. So shoot me for wanting to do something for someone else and being able to take off made me a much better teacher when I went back because I wasn't burned out. Make that a topic and see how many teachers agree with me.

I do know that the definition of a crime does not have to be something illegal but most people would "assume" that you mean doing something illegal. In the future could you please specify when something is illegal. That explains why nothing has been done to persecute the ones you are blaming. I am sure that I am not the only one that thought you were speaking of Jackson doing something illegal.

Well, I'll be darned. I am not the only one who questions what you are doing.
I'm sorry if I did not make myself clear when I said "not all crimes have a punishment". It simply never occurred to me that anyone would think a crime could actually be legal.
If you spend some time reading the Tennessee Code Annotated you will see that there are a number of illegal activities that do not have a punishment or the punishment is so slight that it's not worth the cost to prosecute.
Here is an example that most clearly shows this situation.
When the school system entered into a contract to build the ball field at Richland. The law was violated in the way the contract was let, in the way alterations were made, and the way additional money was spend without bidding out the work. The State Attorney General wrote that this was "clearly violations of state law" but "since there was no penalties attached to this law no prosecution would take place". He then stated that "breaking that law could be used to justify firing or demotions, or reprimands".
The school board chose to ignore the whole thing and swallow the additional cost created by Mr. Jackson steering the contract to a friend and then increasing the amount paid out without authorization.
Now so there will be no misunderstanding I'll state it this way, Mr. Jackson violated state law, committed a criminal offense, in this matter of the Richland contract. For those who would say I just libeled or slandered or whatever Mr. Jackson nothing would make me happier than for him to sue me and take me to court over this. In fact I challenge my anonymous critic to contact Mr. Jackson offer to put up the money if he would sue me. I hope this clarifies the issue. Allen Barrett

All I can say is that you do what you have to do.

Shirey left because of the negative attitudes and personal agendas of the new board members. He did not want to be a part of such negativism. Got that straight from the horse's mouth.
As for Murrey, since she was elected chairman of the board, all she has talked about has been "being in control now." She may claim to care about education, students, and teachers, but her real agenda is just wanting power and control. She wants to be the boss. If you think otherwise, she has you completely deluded. And she does not have the self-control or intellect to do the job. Just wait and see, the Board will end up in a big mess because of this. The only question is how long it will take.

As for naming one thing about Murrey, it was her idea to have the board retreat in Alabama. Let's see...she constantly criticizes TJ for being from Alabama, yet it was her convoluted idea to go there for the school board retreat, and her business is there too. That does Giles County education a lot of good, doesn't it? She wanted everyone to drive all that way and spend a fortune on gas to get there. I'm sure all the citizens who might want to attend the meeting would really enjoy spending all that money to go to Alabama to sit in on a meeting that should be held in Giles County. There's your one, and I could name many more but I think I've made my point.

The business cards are board member business cards, not personal cards. They are provided to all board members who wish to have them. Not all members have wanted them. Ask your board rep for one and you will have a way to get in touch with them, makes sense to me. We are not talking about big bucks.
One board member made her own. But it is a perk for the members to have the cards. Not much else comes from being on the board. Can't anyone complain about the pay. I think they get paid 30.00 a meeting. Not a work session but a meeting. They get paid quarterly so they really get a whopping big check. For some of the crap they have to take they should get paid a whole lot more. Just putting up with Kathy Norman's wining and taking the time to decipher what is a lie and what is truth from Jackson is worth a 100 bucks a meeting. I think somebody is nit picking. $1200 need to be saved on phone bills but how much can business cards cost. The $30 the board gets paid is almost not enough to cover gas, let them have something!!
