How Much Is Too Much?????
If you make a budget that is more than you actually have and must use the reserve funds that have been saved for hard times does it seem reasonable to keep adding expenses to that budget?
The current budget that was approved just months ago has already required using the reserve funds. Last year the commissioners approved $110,000.00 for the stadium. That money was left out of the actual budget presented for approval by the commissioners, yesterday it was put back into the budget. Was this a simple mistake or a simple slight of hand. The budget as presented was already bloated and unrealistic, did the absence of these monies make it appear less problematic?
This wasn't the only item left out of the budget $18,000.00 approved to reimburse Lynnville was also put into the budget yesterday. A 15% increase in the amount given to the libraries in Lynnville, Ardmore and Minor Hill was added. Up to $23,000.00 was approved to move the bleachers from Sam Davis to Richland was approved.
The question that keeps coming to my mind is how when you have no money do you keep spending? The Budget Committee seems unable to say no to anything with a price tag. Will the full commission follow this destructive pattern or will common sense step up and say no? At the rate of current spending and raiding of the reserves can there be a reasonable expectation of less than a ten cent tax increase next year? When everyone else is required to say no in their personal budgets, when unemployment is so high, when jobs and the tax base are shrinking should government not show a greater restraint in spending our money? With so many errors of items being left out of the budget, it seems we have a big problem with our Finance Director. I never did think she was qualified anyway, CPA or not.
Yes, you are right anonymous 7:34pm. As someone that supported the act of 1981 I understand how the act reads. Our director of finance was not the best choice for director. However, the finance committee I am sure is happy with their choice. I believe Garner was selected perhaps for a couple of reasons.
The people on the finance committee for the greatest part did not want to see the act of 1981 enacted in our county. Therefore, they had to gain the upper-hand if the citizens voted the act in. The applicant chosen had to be easily manipulated by those on the finance committee against the act of 1981 or was a willing participant to sabotage the act all together. It appears one or the other is taking place. This act is not being adhered to. Garner has no control of what is going on in the finance office. Vansant is hiring secretaries for her office one after another. How many secretaries does she need? Apparently, one of those secretaries' working out of Vansant's office is doing work for the finance office. Like keeping people's time sheets. You see, an employee was recently fired from the finance office and one has to wonder if that wasn't done to offset the amount being spent on the additional secretaries for Vansant's office.
People need to really start to question what is going on in that Finance Dept. Something is just not right up there. Vansant appears to be running the Finance Office and Garner has no backbone to stand up to her. Loretta, you are a disappointment to those who supported you. You have proven untrustworthy and inept in your position. You may think this blog is a source of gossip and fallacious rumors but be cautious. Rumors usually have a strand of truth in them.
Your job is to oversee the checks and balances of the county budgets, purchasing and bidding process. Which you have shown to be a total failure at. Your salary is paid with taxpayer dollars. It is time for you to straighten-up your act and do your job and not kiss Vansant's hiney.
Thats interesting. Did not know an employee of the finance department was fired. Would it not be illegal for a secretary to be doing work of the finance office? See where there will be a meeting of the Financial Management Committee Wednesday at 9:30 in the annex. Folks that can should try to be there then report back on this blog.
Good question to ask and should be funny to watch Vanzant squirm. If she says it isn't true, then she is a liar. Of course we all know she is a liar. She will just be lying again. I am imagining this employee that was fired is probably going to blow the roof off of the wrong doing and favoritism that runs rampant in those two offices. Better beware Adrienne Braden, you could be next. I would love for someone to explain to me how Adrienne Braden has sick days and vacation days to take. When she left the board of education and quit refusing to go to the finance office she lost all those days if she had any at all. I doubt she had any considering she was never there doing her job. Much like now! So if someone can explain that one I would be eager to listen. Oh and I also heard that Braden was begged back by Vanzant due to the EEOC lawsuit against the county for not following equal opportunity standards when hiring the finance director(loretta garner). Hmmmm I sure would hate to know I was only qualified for a job due to my skin color.
Y'all be sure to pass this info on so the finance office nut jobs(garner and sigmond) can start planning their defense. Never had any faith in either of them. And, I am not the one that was fired in case anyone is wondering nor am I friends with or related to this person. I just happen to know. Should make those in these departments be a little more careful. You never know who is watching you.
Adrienne Braden is out due to a family illness. Do you know that she is getting paid for the days she is out? She could only be being paid for the days she is there and being docked for others. She may have been out when she was a school employee, I don't know, but she does have a good reason for being out now.
I know why she is out right now. I am not questioning the reason why she is out. I am questioning how is is able to use sick days or vacation days. She should not have enough accumulated at this point to have any. Remember, she quit the board of education before being transferred to the finance office. She should have started with a clean slate. I have a real problem with her using sick days or vacation she does not have. She could always use the family medical leave act if she has to be out due to illness in the family. I am standing up for what is right and fair regardless of who you are or your circumstance. Adrienne has been a poor employee. She is rarely there at any given day. And no, it has not been due to a serious illness. Due to being lazy. She is a drain on our county taxpaying dollars. She should have never been rehired at the finance office. We had a chance to be rid of her and then Vanzant asked her back to cover her a#$ in order for the county to be seen a positive light when it comes to hiring people of color. That is the truth whether anyone believes it or not. Let me tell you, the walls talk in the finance office and other local government offices. People should beware of what they say and do. You will eventually be found out and it is only a matter of time. Not to mention, some positions are only safe as long as certain persons continue to be elected. If Vanzant chooses not to run next election or is defeated, you can look for a real cleaning of the house. There sure won't be 3 secretaries for the co.exec. Oh by the way, call the finance office and see if you can track Adrienne down. She is never accessible to the county employees when they have a question and there is no one else up there that can help you.
My earlier question is: Do you know that she is being paid for days that she is out? Could it be that she is being docked for days that she does not have sick or vacation days for? As to why she is absent: she has small children who get sick and a sick husband.
Look anonymous 5:20, I know you are trying to be fair here. But, if her and her family are sick that much then they need permanent care and should file for disability and stay home. No, her days started over when she was hired in at the finance office as would be with any new hire and that is exactly what she was. Or so they should have. You have ole Vanzant to thank if is she does have any days because she should have been hired into the finance office as would anyone else and that would be with no sick days or vacation. I think we all know why this is happening and that is because Janet needs a person of color in the office to counteract the nice little lawsuit she and her finance committee members willingly brought upon the county. I imagine Adrienne gets away with things others don't. Just like she did when she was at the Central Office. Absent from her duties constantly. I can give you name after name after name of county employees and school employees that have consistently tried to contact her to handle payroll issues and she is MIA. She is a real piece of work and obviously she and Vanzant have quite a deal worked out to benefit them both.
I have a question for you anonymous. Why don't you try and get that information yourself. See if you can contact the finance office and have someone actually answer the phone and allow you to speak to who you wish to speak to in order to find out if she is being paid for those days or if her pay is being docked. You can't get any help up there from anyone!!!! The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Perhaps, one of Janet's secretaries could help you if they did something besides sit on a couch and stare at the walls. Now that is earning your pay isn't it??? I hear Janet's latest secretary is being paid a $27,000 salary. Not bad for someone who keeps the time for the FINANCE OFFICE employees. That's right!!!! How do the employees in the FINANCE OFFICE have a thing in the world to do with the Co. Exec's office? Man oh man do we have a mess in both of these offices. Can't anyone see this? Go find out for yourself and make it your business to find out. You have a right as ALL of these county employees are accountable to the taxpayers of this county. I have no idea what your last sentence is talking about, can you explain? I did not vote for Financial Management so I am just sitting back laughing at all you are saying. It wasn't so bad the way it was! So now what is being hidden from the public and who is cooking the books?
It is very easy to understand anonymous. There are eyes and ears all over this county and within the county departments. If you sneak around and do things you should not or are talking and overheard, it has a way of being circulated. The very people you trust are sometimes those you cannot.
We need to make these departments accountable to the citizens. Questions need to be asked and clear answers given. None of this I'll get back to you on that crap. Rarely do you ask a question that you can get a clear cut answer. It's like no one knows their job. How refreshing it would be to have employees in some of these depts. that actually know what they are doing. Their salaries certainly reflect what should be their knowledge in their job, but their knowledge doesn't reflect their salary. The very idea that we have an elected official that has actually asked for a 10% pay raise is astounding to me. Guess she is planning on getting that raise and then getting re-elected. Citizens need to remember that come next county election. I imagine you couldn't find a person across the county or the country that wouldn't welcome a 10% pay raise. But, to be so bold as to think you deserve it when your salary already is very generous, is outrageous. Didn't this elected official run for election knowing what her salary would be. Surely, she is capable of living within her means like the rest of us. This greed sickens me! It is time to have a colon cleansing of the worst kind in county government. Get rid of the lazy asses and the excessive salaries and then we can start to progress in this county. If you don't like the job you have and the pay that comes along with it, then you have the option to quit and look for a job elsewhere. That elsewhere, is going to be north of here if they expect a large salary. Difference between here and north of here is you will actually be expected to earn your salary. Because the jobs north of here don't care who your momma, daddy, grand mammy, grand pappy, etc. are. They expect you to come to work do your job and keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, move on because there is always someone else that can do your job if you don't want it. That's the problem with good ole Giles County. There are some that are catered to in our local government offices and then there are those who are struggling and don't have a cup to piss in or a window to throw it out of. It is heartbreaking to see some of our county employees so dedicated to their jobs and in need of their meager little salaries. They bust their asses to do their jobs diligently, show up to work on time all the while struggling and then what happens? You find out another person was hired in the county annex building or elsewhere, with no experience and a salary that is more than other employees that have worked for this county for YEARS!!!! It appalls me and by God someone needs to do something about it. County Commissioners....how about it? Have a backbone you are willing to put to use? Doubtful. That is why nothing in this county will ever change. No one and I mean no one is willing to go the distance and do the right thing. It is like Sarah Palin said, like her or not and regardless of the fact that she will not be our next Vice-Pres, she has a lot of good ideas and I can't think of one rationalized person who wouldn't agree with me on this. It is time to put the government back on the side of the people. So often it is forgotten that those people that work for our county government are accountable to US, the taxpayer. If you don't like it, then go to work in a factory or fast food restaurant around here where you are only accountable to your boss. I have NEVER, let me say it again NEVER had anyone give me a job because of who I am related to or who I know. Perhaps you are a beneficiary of that type of thinking but, it is not true for the majority of the workforce. When you apply for a job no matter where you go it should be based on your knowledge and credentials. Period. Yes it happens everywhere and I know that. In Giles County it runs rampant. I will say this, I am from a county over and have lived in this county for several years. I have never gained employment from a favor or from someone being my friend or knowing my family. Now, you may have and that is good for you. But, don't be misled in your thinking that it is customary. I think you are slightly confusing a favor from a referral. Do you know the difference? It is clear to me that you have not ventured too far from your safe haven of Giles. If so, you would know like I do that when you leave the comforts of "home" you quickly see that you are on your own and are dependent on yourself. It takes courage to move away and start out on your own. The problem with most people these days and especially Giles is that people need to be more open-minded to others points of view. You should try it. I am afraid you are really wrong on this one.

I have never been given a job because of who I knew but I have NOT been given one because of someone that they knew. I had better qualification, experience, education but someone with none of the above was given a job because of a favor that waa owed. Vanzant is a HUGE problem with this county. But she is not the only corrupt one. Tee Jackson is pure evil. He better hope that he gets his time in to retire before a new Governor is elected. Thankfully, I do not have any children in this education system. Adrienne, I know that you are going through a lot in your life right now. If it were not you then people would have to talk about something else. Don't let these people get to you. To Ms. Braden. The problem is when you have a job and don't do that job it puts a burden on everyone else in that office. When you are making the kind of salary, from the taxpayers, you are making the expectation is that you earn that money. It's a nice idea to express that you are willing to be there if anyone needs you but the truth is people need you in your job doing your work and very often you are missing in action. That lack of responsibility is not only a poor reflection on you personally, your employer but also on the God you claim to serve. "While God has a job for you" you also have a job with the county and the need is that you take both jobs more seriously.

If you were very well connected in this county you would know the ins and outs of what is going on. On certain issues,I am very well versed. You should be worried if you are involved or connected. Adrienne does do a good job at the Financial Office. The problem was with Melanie in that office. She DID NOT work at the Central Office and went on to do NOTHING at the FO. She came in late, talked about her dogs all day, smoked outside and then left early. Bills were behind by six months or more sometime. She got fired because the bills were still behind. Companies were beginning to refuse us credit because our bills had not been paid. There were some that were over a year in arrears. SHAMEFUL on her part. She then gets on here and bashes Adrienne. You should not do that Melanie White.

Does "Public Servant" mean that if a person is elected to a “public office the public now serves the “elected official”? Thant we are the servants to serve the desires, egos, wants, pocketbooks of those selected and elate people who hold themselves above their fellow citizens? That a select group of our elected officials now have the assumed power to do whatever they wish, regardless of the impact upon the welfare of the County? That public office is a means towards individual enrichment (financial or ego) for that person in that elected office?
I was of the opinion that elected officials were humble people who have decided to devote their time to better their fellow citizens, that they place their individual attitudes, agendas, personal wealth aside to do what is necessary to help their fellow mankind?

Why should anyone that reads this blog believe anything you say? How are we to know that your info is as true as you say? At least half, or probably a considerably larger number of all blogs of this type, are untrue. Not saying that you're not correct - personally, I don't know. BUT, if YOUR info is true, grow up and sign your accusations. You'll probably even have some people believe you. But for now, you appear to be just a mouthpiece.

By no means is anyone holding a gun to your head forcing you to believe what I say. However, it should cause any reasonable person to wonder.
I must say anonymous it seems more like you care more about YOU being right or wanting to disprove someone rather than the issue itself. Sheds some light on why this county stays so screwed up. If citizens like you don't want to entertain the idea that things go on that shouldn't, then tell me how anyone is suppose to ever get anyone to listen to stop it? You see, it is people like you that refuse to see the corruption. Everyone is so scared to speak up and say anything. Someone's job is on the line if they open their mouth or other retaliatory measures. Can't you understand why no one wants to put their name to these posts? Where is your name? They are trying to get the truth out there the only way they know how. You have no idea the people that know things and are so afraid to speak up. So, don't try to tell me that I don't have proof. I am very confident in what I know. You on the other-hand can just wonder or go ask questions or be present at some of these meetings. Find out for yourself.

I think you are absolutely correct in your assessment of the problem. But the group who continually finds fault seem to prefer contention and drama to real peace. There's a lot of good here in the county, and it just makes sense that we should work together and stop all this accusing, smearing, and the like. I honestly believe we are all trying to do the best we can, and we do NOT need a bunch of crybabies running around here stirring up trouble. But, of course, they claim that they are only concerned with the well-being of Giles Countians. Right. And you know what? Everyone besides them are crooks. If that's not arrogance, what is it?

Ok, here we go again with your asinine questioning about how I have contributed to the betterment of Giles County. Personally, I have done nothing to cause trouble and malign people I disagree with. I am a law-abiding citizen who has never had a moment's trouble with the law. Furthermore, I am not a law enforcement official, so I'm not in the business of "cleaning up corruption" as you suggest. I thought we had the police and the courts for that. If I had evidence of wrongdoings, as you claim you have, I would turn it over to those responsible for pursuing justice and then, I would butt out. But, of course, you can't do that, can you?
You again "suggest" that I am an apologist for corruption in this county. Horsehockey! I am a private citizen who simply offers an opposing voice toward those like you who seem bent on destroying the lives of anyone you resent or who might get in your way. That's it in a nutshell.
As for the HS building, I had nothing to do with its sale or with its future. I can't explain figures that I was not privy to. How did you get them anyhow?
No, I will not sit in judgment like you do about Mrs. Vanzant. How do you or anybody else know who calls her office? Absurd. But then again, you love to "suggest" impropriety, don't you. And again, I have absolutely nothing to do with Mrs. Vanzant or with county government.

You may consider my question to be asinine but considering the pathetic ways you try to attack every matter that is discussed here and continually defend lying, and corruption that you, having such vast knowledge of asses, would give such a self evaluation.
I asked the question about what you have contributed to the betterment of Giles County in response to your continual whining, condemnation of the attempts of others in making our government more transparent and accountable.
Based on your answer it is very clear you have never done anything that required more than sitting on the sidelines criticizing the parade that was passing you by. Your assertion that because you have never caused any trouble you must be a good responsible citizen is pure idiocy. A dead person doesn’t cause any trouble and very few toddlers ever get arrested but neither would be considered the model of a responsible citizen. Gandhi was arrested several times; Dr. King spent a considerable amount of time in jail. The first black Supreme Court Justice was considered by many to be a trouble maker. It seems there was a group of “trouble makers” that got together one night and threw a lot of tea into Boston Harbor. Then there was that bunch of trouble makers who ran Cornwallis back to England. What about that bunch of “hell on wheels” guys who made so much trouble for a little dictator in Europe. Seems President Truman made a lot of trouble with a little “fat man” for the folks in Nagasaki. I would hate to think where we would be today if there had never been those who were unafraid of being called troublemakers. You see just existing does not make one a wonderful citizen. Being responsible sometimes requires stirring up things in order for them to be made better.
I believe for one to be a responsible citizen and have a worthwhile character they must be in the “business of cleaning up corruption”.
Does not being a “law enforcement officer” relieve you of all responsibility for things that are taking place around you? Would you not get involved if you saw someone being robbed in the parking lot because you are not a “law enforcement officer”? Shame on you.

I have no desire to “destroy” anyone’s life, but do have an obligation to my self and my community to try and prevent others from destroying our lives.
It’s not a matter of sitting in judgment where Mrs. Vanzant is concerned it’s merely a matter of taking what she says and checking it against reality the result has been any number of times that she is a liar and can not be trusted to tell the truth. Speak with the commissioners on the property management committee about the Hunter Smith building and who has screwed it up over and over. Talk to the commissioners and ask them if she has proven herself trustworthy.
