Giles County Own Version Of Sergeant Schultz

Many of us old timers remember the character of Sergeant Schultz from the "Hogans Heroes" TV show. Sergeant Schultz was the Sergeant of the Guard at Stalag 13 the prison camp where Col. Hogan and his gang were held as prisoners of war. Sergeant Schultz was a good hearted, bumbling guy who when confronted with evidence of the prisoner's covert activities would simply respond by saying, "I know nothing–NOTHING!" in order to avoid being blamed for things having gotten out of hand and being sent to the Russian Front.

It seems our County Executive has been tutored by Sergeant Schultz and while she doesn't always remain true to his catch phrase of "I know nothing-NOTHING" she certainly is loyal to his spirit.
Last week after being confronted in the Insurance Committee with clear evidence of "stonewalling" by her and the Financial Management Officer her response, as reported in the "Pulaski Citizen" was a very angry, "I don't have anything to do with it" or "I know nothing-NOTHING". If the County Executive doesn't have anything to do with the County spending hundreds of thousands of dollars wastefully what in the world does she have to do with?
After she committed to giving a statement of explanation to the newspaper on Friday there was still no statement available as of Tuesday five days later. After she committed to make the requested public records public, as of today they are still being kept secret.
If the County Executive doesn't have anything to do with the business of the county would someone please explain what she is being paid over $80,000.00 a year to do?
There is much yet to be revealed about the shenanigans taking place in the County insurance embarrassment. One thing already revealed is there seems to be more Sergeant Schultz's trying to hide their involvement and cover their posteriors than there are Col. Hogans. Allen Barrett

So your attacks on Mrs. Vanzant continue as predicted. Hey, but it's election time, isn't it? Would you mind naming those whom you feel are trying to hide their involvement and cover their positions. Come on ; this is your time to really shine and impress readers.

Does it bother you if anyone points out his faults? Oh well. And no, you didn't step on my toes at all, so you need not apologize.
Mrs. Vanzant is not the bad person he's done his level best to show her to be. I wish her God speed and good fortune in the upcoming election in spite of what the disgruntled try to make her appear. I'm sorry if that steps on your toes.

I happen to believe Mrs. Vanzant has executed the duties of her office quite appropriately. You know, I've been at several county functions and have noticed that she is well-received and liked. And I know that is contrary to what the disgruntled have to say. But they have a right to vote as they please. .
Why do these people demand a summary of Mrs. Vanzant's accomplishments when none of them say a single word about her predecessors? What did James Miller, Giles Collier, or Corky Wakefield achieve that was so much better? And I am not casting stones at those people.
Why is there no demand for a discussion of those past county executives' performance? What's the real agenda here? This is what I believe. The disgruntled want to get Mrs. Vanzant out of office, because they want someone in her place whom they think they can manipulate. And they KNOW Mrs. Vanzant will not play into their hands. That tells me a lot about her inner strength of character and her ability to lead in spite of the few who constantly attack her at every turn. But what they may not know is that Mr.Stewart very likely is not their horse. Would they then turn on him as well? I wonder.

I've never said Mrs Vanzant was a bad person only that she does some bad things and is incompetent to be the County Executive. This assessment is based as much on what she hasn't done as on what she has done. She has shown no financial discipline or planning skills and will not take responsibility for her actions. This recently revealed insurance mess is a prime example and to have as your only reaction the defense, I don't have anything to do with that is absurd.... IT'S YOUR JOB.
Trying to defuse the issue by bringing up past County Executives is so disingenuous it's hardly worthy of a response those people are not presently the County Executive nor are they trying to be
what they were or were not is totally irrelevant, but that's part of the problem some want to focus on personalities instead of facts and accomplishments. Talking about the past leaders does nothing toward correcting what's happening now.
I would be very thankful if anyone could explain to me why the financial matters of this county are not something the County Executive should be involved in. I would be even more appreciative if anyone could justify the County Executive refusing to release or order the release of public records. Allen Barrett

I DO NOT care for WAB, but I can not believe that some of the citizens can not see the incompetence of Janet Vanzant. To even think that people are scared to step on her toes is unbelievable to me. Janet will only tell one what they want to hear. She has never made a stand. She has not accomplished anything in her eight years. I don't believe Scott Stewart is that great, but Janet has had her chance, and she has FAILED!

What people must understand is that WAB's criticism does not seem (at least to me) to be personal. He, and others, are simply asking Mrs. Vanzant to be held accountable for her actions or lack thereof as County Executive. I read the paper and follow WKSR news pretty closely and I have yet to see anything major that Mrs. Vanzant has done for Giles County. Yes, I've met Mrs. Vanzant and she seems like a very nice person. She makes the rounds at fund-rasiers and other functions, but I do not feel she has governed the county competently. The same can be said for the county commission with a few exceptions.

Well, looks like the attacks on Mrs. Vanzant and select commissioners will not be ebding until at least after the August elections.
People, please do not let those like barrett and his cohorts convince you that Mrs. Vanzant and select other officials should be burned at the stake. These disgruntled people know they can't themselves get elected to office, so they want you to think the ones they "favor" are such better choices than the ones they relentlessly attack. Don't be fooled. They assume that most people are ignorant and easily swayed. These people are, in my opinion, very dangerous. Heaven help us should they figure out a way to be able to tell you and me what to do. Vote against every single one of them.

6:29 Your defense of Mrs Vanzant's work record is nil. Instead you turn the topic to these unknown people YOU think are running for offfice and wont get elected. Who exactly are you meaning? Get specific here.
Then, how about giving us your reasoning as to why Mrs Vanzant recently eliminated the beer distance law over and above the vote of the full commission. What is your reasoning behind why Mrs Vanzant failed to submit the necessary state paperwork that would have resulted in Pilot bringing new business to exit 14 along with the 90 employee positions that went with the new business? Thats just to name a couple. Wasnt it under Mrs Vanzants 'reign' the Hunter Smith building was purchased, mega bucks spent on renovation, sat for years and years then sold for $50,000losing the county over $300,000? Didnt Mrs Vanzant declare secret ballots (strictly against state law) would be made during the interview process of the finance director, Loretta Garner and the DA had to direct the meeting void and she had to hold the meeting over? Lets hear your supportive responses to her actions. You see, we people in Giles county are not so dumb as you think we are and we dont forget.

No one I know wants Mrs Vanzant or anyone else burned at the stake we have just had enough of her incompetence and Sgt. Schultz impersonations.
Of course like 6:29 people want who they "favor" to be elected it would be really stupid to go out and try to get someone you didn't "favor" elected now wouldn't it, but that shows the depth of 6:29's thinking ability.
I have never said or written that "most people are ignorant". On the contrary I have said "most people want to know what's going on but are so busy trying to make a living and don't have an opportunity to attend meetings" that's why I have this blog so people can learn about things and make up their own mind.
6:29 is very good at misleading and redirecting away from factual information. Even he admits that he can't dispute the truth of what I have written his only defense is to attack me personally. The problem for him and those who have taken advantage of people who have placed their trust in them is the evidence is overwhelming and can no longer be hidden. 6:29 is running scared along with those who have kept this county in the 1930's for so long, your help is needed to put better leaders in office so this county can become open to business and jobs and the secrets that have enriched and suppressed for so long can be ended. I hope to be one of those new leaders and will be with your help. Allen Barrett

And you are so misguided if you think those on my side are running scared of you people. On the contrary, we are doing all we can to help you OUT.
I only "attack" you (as you would call it) simply because you and those of your persuasion are so busy trying to trash those you dislike. In my opinion, you are the one who might might be running a little scared, because you know very well that you are up against Mr.Campbell, Mr. Harwell, and the nice Coleman lady, who is a Christian lady.

The person who constantly defends the honor of our County Executive has yet to mention any accomplishments she has made in the past 8 years. You are doing far more harm than good and would it serve JV far better for you to either cough up an accomplishment or shut up. Can't you see the fool you are making of yourself and JV when you repeat the same rant in each post? Perhaps, someone would like to see it from your perspective. But, without proof offered in her defense, how is one to see it any other way than JV has been completely incompetent and unqualified to hold the office of County Executive. Your attempt to make this personal against WAB is proof that you are small-minded and very immature. Our elected officials are accountable to the people who have elected them. I expect answers to the many questions that have been asked of JV and transparency in government. It is her job to do so. My tax dollars as well as many other taxpayers, fund her salary. This is not a popularity contest. We should not elect someone based alone on the idea that someone is a "nice gal" or "nice fella". I know a lot of nice folks that are not qualified to run a county, state or country. So, you can continue beating a dead horse and not offering up any proof to the contrary when asked regarding JV and her office but you do so at JV's detriment. In the future, look at facts and take your personal feelings out of it. We cannot afford to have incompetent people elected to office just to suit the likes of you. Based on the reporting in the local paper, I guess it is safe to assume that you think that Paul Manke and Steve Lake are amongst those who follow the troublemakers. What a laugh!! What will it take to unclog the ears and minds of people like you to see what is plainly right in front of your faces? It's time to get off the WAB hate train and begin looking at the facts and what is truly going on in this county.

I know some accomplishments of Mrs. Vanzant.
(1) She accomplished to pay our Financial Director more money than she even ask to be pay because she (Mrs. Vanzant) lied to the Financial Committee about the qualification of the applicants.
(2) She accomplished a lawsuit from Lisa White because she (Mrs. Vanzant) went around saying she shouldn't be hired cause she was a trouble maker and lazy AND didn't tell the Fin. Committee that she had rated #1 on the list of qualified persons.
(3) She accomplished the County not getting several businesses out at the Frankewing I-65 exit when she convinced the Commissioners the plan for the sewer system out there would be bad for the county AND FORGOT to send in the necessary paper work to the State.
(4) She's accomplished keeping Stoney Jackson on the Economic Dev. Commission paying him $30.00 to do nothing but say yes to Speer.
(5)She's accomplished helping Lovell and Jackson eliminate the beer distance rule for the County by calling the Campbellsville store owner and tell them to hurry and come get your permit before the Commission changes the distance back to 1000 feet.

Yes, she has accomplished AND COST more than anyone can ever accomplish again. Or should I say I hope never, ever gets accomplished or costs the county again! She's bad news for this county and I hope people will realize and see the need for a more open minded, more cooperative, un-bias, truthful, and business minded person to run our county. We can't stand another 4 years of what we have. Things have got to change and that includes Commissioners too! Think of us taxpayers, not of yourselves Commissioners!

Regardless of her character(which is questionable according to MOST on here that do know her), what i do know, is that she has done a very poor job ever since she has been in office. If you think she has done such a great job, then why cant you name one...JUST ONE...good thing that she has done for our county? We keep coming back to that dont we? It is because of this behavior that the people have formed the opinion they have about her being dishonest and out for herself. Lucky for 11:38 that they have not had the same experience with Mrs. Vanzant. But, that doesn't not erase the fact that so many of us have. I choose to vote responsibly by making my decision on what I have experienced in dealing with her and her effectiveness in leadership. Both of which have been unbecoming of a leader in our community.

Wrong again! It's just that I will not sit idly by and let a small group (I said small) group fo disgruntled get away with trying to portray Mrs. Vanzant as a liar, an incompetent, and anything else they might say to take votes away from her. Oh no, that's not going to happen if I have anything to do with it. Nobody said she is perfect, but she's done as well as anybody else before her. More importantly, it's my opinion that the same little group who constantly attacks her started all this mess in the first place. But I don't think their plan is going to work.
Again, Mrs. Vanzant has my respect, my support, and my vote.

10:25 So you will condone Mrs Vanzant's behavior no matter what. Lets hear your response on how she has handled this open records problem with the insurance? And, please, don't come back with "Barrett & co, and I'll defend her no matter what".

I agree with the above poster. Let's hear your response 10:25 as to how you think she handled the situation. Focus on Janet and Janet alone. Do not try to deflect and bring those who disagree with Janet into things. If you have the ability to think on your own and form your own honest opinion, you can't honestly say that this situation is not suspicious. But, then again, you seem to still be wearing the blinders that many have begun to shed as their eyes have been opened to what is going on in our county. Why don't you try being honest with yourself? Do you really owe Janet that much to keep your head buried in the sand? When she lies to you I bet you would still bow at her feet. Shameful. The choice of course is yours.

My choice of course will be Mrs. Vanzant. There's two sides to every story, and just because I dont see things your way does NOT make me wrong and does not make Mrs. Vanzant the villain you guys cleverly try to make her out to be. OK?

Yes, it does make you wrong because some people actually do know the truth. It is time for you to accept that you continue to defend a very deceptive person. For you to still be in denial is at will. You probably know better but, chose to defend her anyway. That makes you equally as bad as her. Maybe you both get along so well because you share that common bond. You both mislead people when you know better and when you know the truth. Shame on you.

I believe I read one place where Mr Barrett said he was a registered voter in this county all during the time he was in the military and moved here in 1983 or 1984. that would be well over 40 years. I understand also that his wife and her family were born and raised here.

Yes, I would like to know who not to vote for. WAB isn' in my district so don't worry about that.
But if there is more not to vote for I would like to know.
I noticed in your people to vote for you mentioned one man you wouldn't vote for who is already a comminissioner so I take it he's one not to vote for. I think he has lived here all his life.

I know Tee Jackson and Janet Vanzet were born and raised her, but didn't they leave and waltz in and take over.

I'm not against Tee or Janet, just pointing that out.

Another thing, I read Jimmy's letter twice. I thought he sounded bitter or mad, but thought he had a right. Now is the city's and BD of Education's insurance all lumped together?? Like all buildings and vechiles?
Don't come back at me with the courthouse is county property not cities because it's in Pulaski. I know that.

Just wondering if Police cars and Sherriff's cars are insured by county together.

Well, that could be true. But that town doesn't have the disgruntled few there like we have here. They are those who, in my opinion, know good and well they can't get elected to offices through the normal election process, so they are pushing this charter thing as an alternative.
Look, all you really need to know about how bad the charter will be for Giles County is take a long hard look at the ones who are pushing it. That should tell you what you really need to know. Think.

Friday, April 30, 2010 7:37:00 PM

I'm thinking. Are you telling me the places that have a charter don't have elections same as we do? No one has to run, they just appoint who ever they want.

I don't think Marshall county has the Charter and they don't have to put up with the crap Giles County does.

A few that didn't want to listen to the ones put them in office had to go.

If Giles County had just listen like they were going to do what they were asked, no one would be upset. Then go ahead and do what they want to.

This is I'm the Boss and I'm not listening to you is the problem.

Some act like they are above every body else just because they got elected.

Mr. James vote against the ones in office now, because you will never get a reason to vote for Mrs. Janet unless you talk to her if you can.

Or will you continue to listen to the main instigator of all the hatred and distrust you see around Giles County? If you can't do that, then why don't you consider a move to another town far away so you can make a fresh start? It's a shame that you have to live here and be so frustrated with all the corrupt and incompetent leadership we have. Dream big, and go for it!

Do you think yourself so smart (or insecure) that you have to make an issue of someone's typo? How small-minded, indeed.
Let me ask a question, since you mentioned something about taxes. Who will pay the taxes for road improvements and maintenance, partial teacher salaries currently paid by the state, and etc. should Giles County vote in the charter and run short of money a few short years down the road? You know very well that people will not voluntarily vote themselves a tax increase. Would you care to share your views on that?

Saturday, May 01, 2010 10:21:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

10.21 Should Giles county vote in the charter it does not effect income from the state. Read the law as I have done and you will see for yourself. Why should Giles county run short of money down the road? If we had a county leader and finance director doing their jobs they would be tightening the purse strings now while we are in this recession. As for folks voting in a tax increase - why not? We have some sensible people here and if the need was necessary I believe a tax increase would be voted in. Have you forgotten the optional sales tax already that was voted in a couple of years ago for the Sam Davis park?

I was just thinking in terms of state matching funds that could be lost should the county be on its own to fend for itself. Regardless, and this is an issue for later on, I don't see why we need charter rule. It's quite obvious to me who is pushing it and why, and that troubles me deeply. But, again, that's a separate issue.
And then you go and ruin our dialogue by taking a shot at Mrs. Vanzant. Tacky indeed.

Well, you and your buddies' attack campaign didn't work, did it? Mrs. Vanzant IS our county executive! Will you now support Mrs. Vanzant, or will you spend the next four years trying to cause her all the trouble you can? Oh, and by the way, you came in last again in your district race. Good!
I hope you will remember one thing I told you from the start. People do not like attack dogs. Do you recall that warning? I believe you and your buddies probably gave Scott Stewart his defeat. In retrospect, don't you?You were warned about that as well. I hope you are proud of yourself.
Here's some helpful advice for you. If you have future concerns, please don't hesitate to contact those commissioners in your district who will be representing you.
