Thinking about a new electric car?

With the release of the new Chevy, pardon me Chevrolet, (it has been deemed unacceptable to refer to a General Motors vehicle as a Chevy).
With the help and influence of Algore Nissan has the "Leaf" and Chevy the "Volt" and others are said to be coming.

Before you run out and buy one of these "miracle earth saving vehicles" you might want to consider that the initial cost of over $40,000.00 is only the beginning. An advertising campaign is now under way that shows how you just drive into the ole garage and plug her in for an over night charge and you're ready to go next morning unless of course you plan on travelling more than seventy miles.
What isn't shown in these commercials is the fact you have to purchase some components in order to recharge at home.
Since it is the beginning of electric vehicles, why not start to learn
about the components needed to recharge such vehicles at home?
Most home garages are equipped with 120-volt outlets and electric vehicles can be charged from these outlets. However, the recharge time for the Chevy Volt
is about 10 hours from a 120 outlet. A 240-volt outlet cuts the recharge time
to about 4 hours. The cost of a ten hour charge under proposed TVA rate charges is significantly higher than a four hour charge both will require about as much electricity as an average size house uses in a full day.

Both Nissan and Chevrolet offer complete charging systems for
homeowners. This includes assessing the home, obtaining the
electrical permit, installing the equipment, and performing warranty
service. Nissan says that its equipment costs $2,200 and Chevrolet provides
it for $2,000.

Oh don't forget that the batteries will have to be replace after approximately three years at a cost of over $4,000.00. And don't worry about having an accident because you'll be sitting on top of those nickel metal hydride batteries when they explode.

What is gained by this great advance you get to drive about eighty miles for 3 dollars of electricity instead of eighty miles for $8.00 for gasoline. For those who are saving the earth by not using fossil fuels keep in mind that those fossil fuels are being used to make the electricity.

Then don't buy one for crying out loud. But in the meantime take comfort in sending your money to those in the Middle East who love us so much....nice of them to round our payments out to $3/gallon increments.

I intend to be plugged in.

3:46 Wise guy.

When I first heard of these cars running on battery, I wondered if it would stay charged up long enough to go on a long trip. I would hate to hate stranded.

Does anyone in Pulaski have one? I would like to check it out. Doubt I would buy one until they get the bugs worked out. I'm sure the dealers are still willing to sell the gas ones.

If you have not ordered a Leaf you will have to wait until next year. All of their 2011 models were sold as pre-order. You will also have to wait for the Volt as they are being released in the Washington D.C. area, as well as California and Michigan first. Don't know why, just have been doing a little research on both automobiles. Would I purchase one? Have been giving it serious consideration. Am I worried about the long charge time? Nope. Our garage has 240 outlet so that is not an issue. Am I worried about sitting on the battery? Again, no. I currently drive a hybrid vehicle with one of those batteries in it.

9:35 If you had an electric car and wanted to drive from Pulaski to Los Angles, California, would the battery have enough charge? Or would you have to stop somewhere and charge it. How long would it take.

I find so many things to worry about. I think I would be afraid to be setting over the battery. After a few years I might be alright with it. I want my car to be ready to go when I get ready. I think you can tell I'm a woman and know nothing about cars except how to turn on and stop it.

Maybe I id stretch that a little bit. Caan change tire if I have to.

You can tell by the gauge if you are low on gas. I figure there will be one to tell if the battery is low.
But can you get a charge as quick as you can fill up with this high price gas?

You are no better than he is or you wouldn't post on threads that didn't say anything bad about anyone. No you are worse.

This is what Motortrend says. Of course we know that WAB knows more than anyone else.

•Just plug it in to charge the battery, and most people can commute gas- and tailpipe emissions-free for about $1.50 per day.
•A small, quiet on-board gas generator creates electricity that powers your Volt as you drive for up to 375 miles on battery and gas power

Price starts at $32,780.

He cannot get anything right. Of course like every other story he did not lie. He just doesn't know what he is talking about.

Just shows how someone is going to post against Barrett no matter anytime they can.
I saw on one thread the one called enabler said she/he would stop when Barrett quit talking about other people. I say she can't quit.

Why can't you be a gentlemen if you are and let this thread be about the electric cars. That's something new and needs to be discussed.

Exactly. After the US government pays the subsidy for one of these things! Did YOU HEAR THAT?
THIS ELECTRIC VEHICLE HAS TO BE SUBSIDIZED in order for it to be considered affordable.
As of right now, your average HYBRID is the best idea going, simply because it cost less to purchace and to operate.
Remember those Toyota's Running away with people and all the recalls? GM with Administration help, did a good job scaring the people away from that company. What ever became of all the news surrounding TOYOTA'S problems? Any one recall that?

You very erroneously state "He cannot get anything right. Of course like every other story he did not lie. He just doesn't know what he is talking about."

I appreciate that you at least acknowledged the truth in my words. I noticed that you failed to point out anything of significance that I left out pertaining primarily to the batteries. I did not state that the vehicle had four tires so does that mean in your eyes I failed to write accurately about the vehicle?

This is an excerpt from the article, “Batteries Are the Shocking Truth about Electric Cars” that appeared on Daily Markets July 22, 2010.
President Barack Obama flew to Holland, Mich., on Thursday to attend groundbreaking ceremonies for a new lithium-ion battery plant, which the White House advertised as an example of federal stimulus grants at work and a gateway to a clean-energy future. Great stuff – if you don’t look too hard.
The Holland plant, effusively hailed by Michigan Gov. Granholm as creating 300 jobs, and 62,000 “green” jobs down the road, will produce batteries in America. But Compact Power Inc., which received $151 million from a federal stimulus program to open the $303 million plant, isn’t American and neither is its technology: It’s a subsidiary of the giant South Korean conglomerate LG Chem, and its technology is Asian.
Also that age-old bugaboo for electric cars – range and battery life – is still a work in progress. General Motors says its Chevy Volt will go up to 40 miles on a single charge and will have a range-extending, gasoline-assist feature. Nissan’s fully electric car, the Leaf, will have a 100-mile range. Ditto Ford’s electric Focus. Much depends on driving conditions.
Lithium-ion batteries are way ahead of traditional lead-acid batteries in power and weight, but they aren’t perfect. As yet, the best battery is far from being a competitor for a tank of gasoline.
In Obamaland, windmills will turn silently through the night, while millions of fully electric cars get their batteries topped up in driveways and garages.
A green and pleasant land is just a few million batteries away and, by Jove, the Department of Energy is on the job. It has $2.4 million to spend on electric car infrastructure. The department is helping to bring on nine battery plants, including the one in Holland. It’s also promoting charging stations.
Some small facts: These batteries are still so expensive (about $16,000 apiece) that any fully electric car, or near so, requires subsidies down the line to get the price down to where ordinary people will buy them in quantity. The only fully electric vehicle on the market today, the Tesla (TSLA: 31.70 +0.34 +1.08%), is a sports car that costs over $100,000 and is aimed at the well-heeled greens of Hollywood.
While official retail prices for the Ford, Nissan and GM models haven’t been announced, estimates are in the range of $30,000 to $35,000. Those that have been shown however range in the 40 to 45,000.00 range. Federal tax credits are likely to trim several thousand dollars for many buyers.

The truth of the matter is the Volt is not even a fully electric car only a different configuration of the hybrid as it requires gasoline to operate a generator in order to get over 40 miles per charge.
I don't mind being criticized but please at least put some substance in your criticism so they can at least be researched.
The electric car in it's present form is both dangerous and economically prohibitive. It is too small, production and disposal of batteries is hazardous to people and the environment and they are cumbersome, the initial cost will never be recovered by any savings in fuel cost and insurance rates are higher. This is just another political daydream that will enrich some, have incredible unintended consequences just as most every other government program that has been pushed down the throats of "we the people" by those who seek to dictate out every move.

I know this has nothing to do with this thread, but I was walking through Wal-Mart tonight and overhead a man talking about the tragedy of the young man this past weekend. He had NO first hand knowledge of the incident, yet he was there spouting gossip and so called news that he had NO idea what he was talking about. The reason I mention this is that this is so common to have people talking about something they have no idea what they're talking about. It would be nice if people got FACTS right before repeating ANYTHING.

What happened to the discussion about the electric car swindle?

I'm confused about these electric cars. I see the good in not giving my money to the Middle East and clean environment, but what if I'm at Prospect or Minor Hill and need to get my child to a hospital in Nashville in a hurry. My electric car will only run about 50 miles before being recharged. I've already been a few miles on this charge and it wouldn't have made it to Nashville if I hadn't. I can't wait for the battery to be recharged.

Are you suppose to set the battery on charge every time you get out of it at home?

I find to many problems with it today. Maybe someday it will be a good idea.

11:33 That is where Mr. Barrett did not tell everything correctly. The car continues to run after that many miles but not off of the battery charge, It has a generator that continues to charge the battery but you are then using gas.

•A small, quiet on-board gas generator creates electricity that powers your Volt as you drive for up to 375 miles on battery and gas power

If it has gas to help charge the battery, so I will still paying high price for it.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Confused on these electric car.

Well, Electric cars are nothing new. Research it and you'll find that we had them in the early 1900s! The reason they faded from the market, was because they had limited range, and limited power. They were also more costly to buy than your standard gas engined auto. Funny but it seems like the old saying " the more things change, the more they stay the same" applies still!
Seriously though; I'd love to see a car that runs on anything cheaper than gas. But until someone comes up with a more viable solution than our current superior gas engined models, I'll continue to pay at the pump, till I can't afford to. Then I suppose I'll either bicycle or walk.

Wrong again. You took what I said totally out of context. But that's fine. Anything I might say in defense of myself is so often twisted into something sinister.
I was simply showing a bit of humility by saying I don't pretend to know it all. That statement was made in response to one of you guys who accused me of thinking I was always right and knew everything or something to that effect.
Any news reporter worth his or her salt knows you can't get away with selecting out the entire meaning of a statement and have any credibility whatsoever.
