Closing of the Agri-Park

The following thread is posted in response to a readers request. The requester included their name with their request but did not specifically ask that their name be included so I have left it out of the thread, they can post it on any comment they may make.

Mr. Barrett could you post a thread about the closing of the Agri Park for the Winter. It seems that it was closed without any warning. Several functions including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts meeting, the flea market and other private parties had to be cancelled. The reason given is that it is losing money. I may be under the wrong impression, but I didn't know that the Park was a profit center for the County. Maybe I'm wrong. It seems that if we want to save money, we could privatize the ambulance service where we lose a million dollars a year. Thank you for for your service to the community.

Would like to know who made the statement the park is "losing money" (this could be posted anonymously). Shouldnt the decision be made by the Agri Park Comm. then voted on by the full commission otherwise you have one or two people making the decision for possibly hundreds who might like to use the park over the next months.

The losing money comment was made by Mrs.Vanzant and the Agri Park committee at a brief meeting at the Park last week.

Of course it will lose money if its not open for use! The flea market was surely making money and there are many community activities that would love to rent the new heated building during the winter months.

How do you lose money and justify closing when all you are doing is just sitting there. What expense is involved when the park isn't being used and will that change with the park closed, seems like it's just a difference in words. At least if it's open for business there is the chance of making some money. How did the committee get the power to decide anyway isn't that a decision to be made by the full commission or has the County Executive once again overstepped her authority and created another mess like the beer distance problems?

Yet another negative thread and an attack on Mrs. Vanzant. You really are something. Maybe they had to close the park to offset the expenses incurred by your various lawsuits.

Janet is afraid she is going to cost the county more money. She made sure she got her tie breaker vote in real fast to allow beer to be sold 600 from a church, but they probably don't want her back in church anyway. I bet they have found out about all her lies also. She is a real snake in the grass as dangerous as a rattle snake. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her.

We have to hope that whoever made the decision to close the park is sure that the buildings are designed AND CONSTRUCTED such that they CAN be safely closed for the winter. Otherwise there'll be a busted-pipe festival to match the non-working agripark toilets and septic system .
Are the county still paying $140 a pop to have the tank pumped out after every weekend event and daily during the County Fair?

I think MMC serves various important functions in Giles County. For one thing, the institution provides jobs that otherwise would not be here. Those jobs help the local economy. MMC also sponsors the annual PACE car show which brings revenue into the county. The school also provides a means wherein local students can gain an education without leaving town.
I'm not aware of other things the college does, but I am sure there are. What do you think?

I hadn't seen anything good about MMC since the election on this blog, excepted what I posted.

I'm all for MMC and didn't like the post against it.

As for the people that work at MMC I had already posted they live here and buy from the merchants. If they own a home which I feel sure they do they pay property taxes and/or city tax.

He has made it very clear that the act is an abomination to God but not the person anymore than a thief or murderer would be condemned by God. When people take the time to listen to what others are saying instead of looking for ways to criticize they can learn a thing are two. Just as any person can be forgiven for their rejection of God Christians also must continually seek forgiveness for their sinful acts. Bro. Barrett wasn't the one who was using hate speech against gays that was Terry Harwell and while he may have said it in anger he said it none the less. If anyone needs to be criticized for what they said it should be Mr. Harwell not Bro. Barrett

Good luck everyone here at Giles Free Slander.

Topix CEO angry over Polk subpoenas seeking IDs
by Melody Dareing, The Cedartown Standard

The chief executive officer of a nationwide chat board isn’t happy with Polk County Sheriff Kelly McLendon.

“I think what the sheriff’s office did was criminal and, at the very least, violated rights to freedom of speech,” said Chris Tolles, CEO of Topix L.L.C., based in Palo Alto, Calif.

Topix is a news, chat and discussion board.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office obtained seven subpoenas in late summer to obtain the IP addresses and identities of bloggers on a Cedartown discussion thread titled “Polk County Deputy and Co-worker.” As of Friday, there were more than 540 comments on that thread.

Two sheriff’s office employees who were fired from the sheriff’s office

— Sgt. Johnny Moats and officer Barry Henderson — filed a federal lawsuit in October claiming they were wrongfully terminated. The Topix forum discussed some of the issues within the sheriff’s department related to those lawsuits.

In addition, Moats was identified by Polk County sheriff’s officials as one of the posters to the Topix forum, through the information obtained through the subpoenas.

The subpoenas stated that the sheriff’s office was seeking the IP addresses to support an investigation into defamation of character and slander.

Topix doesn’t maintain records of the personal information of those blogging on its site, Tolles said. However, the company did turn over the IP addresses of more than 50 bloggers after the company was served with subpoenas, Tolles said.

Tolles said with the additional information he has now, he believes the subpoenas were improper, and the episode treads on basic American rights.

“It looks like these were improperly issued and improperly signed,” he said, adding that he has looked deeper into the matter since turning over the addresses.

Polk County Magistrate Court Judge Jean Crane signed the subpoenas. Tolles said he “in all likelihood” would file a lawsuit against the sheriff’s office and possibly the magistrate’s office.

“We are going to make a complaint to the state Attorney General and to the FBI,” he said.

Tolles said he wants to involve federal authorities because he feels the subpoenas violated federal statutes as well as those in Georgia.

“I hope the sheriff loses his job or is not re-elected,” he said.

Tolles said he is no stranger to these types of issues. He said he gets subpoenas every month.

While Topix cooperates with law enforcement, Tolles said there are some cases where he fights before giving up information.

“We try to fight against it, but when it goes to superior court, the court always stands against us,” he said.

He said the issue of protecting bloggers’ identities versus cooperation with law enforcement will remain an issue for a long time. That’s because every state has different rules, and the issue falls under state law.

The "enabler of evil" has damaged the intent of practically every topic you have raised in the past few weeks. And while it was at first fun for some to attack the poster in question; the post from this antagonizer has become more obnoxious and pathetic everytime she or he posts.
I suggest that everyone here refrain from responding to the childish ramblings of this person, because she or he appear without any reason or logical intent, other than to attack Mr. Barrett for personal reasons.
Deletion of such attack posts, will allow us to return to more serious and civilized disscussion of the excellent topics of disscussion provided here for the truly decent and concerned citizens of our county.

11:35 You're not allowed to say "why does it matter who's watching" but it's ok for this person to post.

What difference does it make who posted what?

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 3:55:00 PM

then he says on 8:41 "who cares who is watching for goodness sake."

Two set of rules.

Wrong again! Neither of the two are rules; they are suggestions. The point you miss for whatever reason is that it really doesn't matter who posts what here since most all of the entries are anonymous. And, to trivialize it even further, who cares who among you is watching someone else? Laughable.

Yes, and now I'm beginning to think the barrett cheerleaders are even less in number than I had originally thought. There may be two of them, one of course being you.
Actually, I have to leave and go to work here in just a few. Have a nice day.

5:54 I thought I would show I could stay off the blog today, but decided to see if you could and seen you can't. I don't know Mr. Barrett, but like you I don't like to see people picked on.

I've never said anything against Mrs. Vanzant, Commissioners or even Mr. Jackson. Just wish you could tone down your, "go ask and leave the county." They aren't very becoming of anyone from Giles county.
First and only comment today.

My response was to 7:51 Was that you?
When did I say that I would stay off the blog? You committed to that but couldn't do it.
Your statement that I pick on barrett is totally false. I just don't let him get away with picking on others. In my opinion, he tries to bully and intimidate those he resents for whatever reason. Aside from that, I simply ask him to stop it. And he has greatly toned down the rhetoric. That is commendable. I hope he will continue to make improvement in that area of his life.

7:02, nope that wasn't me, I only did one post yesterday sand this one today. Just wanted to let you know that wasn't my post.

I guess if you wasn't posting about the name calling I would be doing it. On that we agree. I read a very disgusting post on the first thread.

Your post of "ask and move" started me picking on you. It didn't sound good.

Well look, perhaps we both need to calm down. I just have a problem with name-callers and attackers and probably allowed my outrage at that to get the better of my judgment. I will try to do better. I have mentioned on more than one occasion that people should go ask the official in question should they want answers. That has always seemed the best approach.
Now, as for suggesting that people move if they are unhappy here, I really didn't see anything wrong with that. Why should anybody stick around where he or she is unhappy? Perhaps I shouldn't have said that, but it did seem appropriate at the time.

Name calling is a part of communication we call each other by our given names and we refer to each other by names we earn by our actions. When I or anyone else calls a person a liar and gives a legitimate reason for that name it seems appropriate, if no reason for that name is given then it is inappropriate to use it.
A person who has been found guilty in a court of law is appropriately referred to as a criminal. A person who breaks into this country illegally is often referred to as an illegal.
The problem seems to be that sometimes a person earns a name that they dislike but can not come up with any justification to have the name voided.
The politically correct crowd dislikes the negative sound of some names and try to force others to refer to them by different more kindly names, thus a baby killed by an abortionist is referred to as a fetus and the baby killer is referred to as one who terminated the pregnancy. A liar is a spin master and a thief is who who simply misappropriated money. A drug addict becomes one with a chemical dependency.
Sorry I don't fit in with the politically correct and simple, plain language is what I use. A liar is one who knowingly tells something that is untrue. A thief is someone who takes something without the proper authority to do so.
Too often people seem to have no concern for their name until after their actions have destroyed that name.

There is no enabler if you refer to me. That is a lie started by one who ought to be standing against telling lies.
Is there anything else you'd like to discuss? Probably not, but thought I'd ask.

I've never heard of the song, "Stand Up to bullies" or troubermakers" that don't mean they are not out there.

I have heard the song, "Big Bad John" and I think of it every time I see a post where the one called enabler brags about what he would of done if it had been him or his wife someone said something about. Looks like he post trying to take care of other wives and people.

Why do we need police, big bad John will take care of everything.

Please cite any statement I made in a bragging sort of way about anything. I'd really love to see that one. Regardless, I would never sit still and allow someone to get in my wife's face. And I am not trying to cast aspersions on Terry. He's a good guy. I simply lack the self-control he has. So don't try to twist what I said about that.
By the way, why don't you google that song? You might find it interesting.
