Are Land Tax Appraisals Fair?

After having received your property tax notices, do you believe the assessments were fair and reasonable? With property values, especially in town, having decreased so greatly and the housing market suffering so greatly do you believe your assessment was fair and reasonable? Did your assessment go up or down in this time of recession and numerous foreclosures?

I thionk an increase in property assessed vales is very necessary, especially considering that the tax rate went down. I believe that Mr. McGill is very dedicated and hard working. I hope that he continues to be our assessor and friend.

how can an increase in values be justified when everyone from the appraiser to the banks to the purchaser all say values arent what they used to be? bluegill is the only person in this county that thinks property values have risen. give me some of what is in his sundrop bottle

10:59 I didn't read 10:50's post like you. That person didn't say a thing about barrett not being a nice or good person.
I understood if we didn't post back things wouldn't get started. Just ignore him.
Haven't you ever heard the more you stir something the more it stinks.
Looks like if we reply back we are stirring it.
My parents always told me if a class mate was picking one me, if I just ignored them it would be better, If I fight back they see they are making me mad and love that and will keep on.

Would you mind explaining to me how being a horrible person is any different than saying that person is not nice? I'd really like to know where the difference lies. Or do you think one characterized as a horrible person can also be nice?

Some of the nicest people out their are the most horrible. Nice to those that will listen and horrible to those in which they hold a grudge. It is called "being a snake in the grass". Don't think that Barrett won't turn his back on anyone that disagrees with him.

I don't really care one way are the other what you call him but you should know what you're talking about before you do it, but I guess it's like you keep saying he's a liar but never give anything to support it. If you say he's a horrible person enough maybe you can convince people of it without providing anything but your feelings about it.

This topic was about the tax increases. I just got mine in the mail and it went up more than a little. I thought the county wasn't supposed to get more money in a reappraisal year. Guess Barrett was right when he said they would be going up.

Wait untill next year when the current County Budget deficite comes knocking at the Commission door. The County Executive and Commissioners WILL NOT REDUCE SPENDING, OR LAY OFF JOBS. The current County government is in power to assure that friends and relatives have jobs.

I am willing to bet that the County Commission will raise the tax rate, begining July of 2012, to over $3.00

Well, Mr. Barrett posted his name about the tax increase and even made it part of his campaign, he even told which commissioners were pushing the spending and the tax increase but no one believed him it's kind of like Obama telling what he would do if elected and people elected him anyway. Barrett is the only person strong enough to stand up to the people who are robbing us.

You either are going to have to have a property tax increase or a wheel tax. Since you small-minded folks can't see that a wheel tax is the most fair tax the landowner will just have to continue to bear the burden. Thanks for standing against everything. That includes growth and progress.

Instead of either a wheel tax or property tax increase why not just get some discipline in the spending.
Spending is where the problem is not the amount of income. Look at the last several budgets each ran a huge deficit and ate up all the reserves, now there are no reserves and they continue to spend like the county is
overgrown with money trees.
Without disciplined spending any new tax money will just be piled onto the problem and the problem will get bigger.

I have lived in badly managed cities, where the service stinks and the citizens have no access. I have seen bloated budgets and abuse and waste. Giles County and Pulaski aren't these places. Since moving here some 14 years ago, I have continually been impressed with the job our public employees and elected officials do. Are they perfect? No, are you? But I have no qualms about their general good intent and work ethic.

If your expenditures outgrow your revenue in just providing the basic needs that the county government is required, then you have to have a tax increase. This has been gone over several times. I think DAW used to make some really sensible statements on this subject. Where is he anyway?

You know as well as I do that ALL department heads have been asked by Mrs. Vanzant to cut spending. Why are you trying to stir up trouble like this? You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
How does one feel to be the most disliked person in Giles County?

11:01 you live in a fantasy. She made a big show of asking departments to cut their budgets even cut three staff people but then she supported a budget that had no cuts and replaced the three people that was let go.
Look at the numbers on the actual budget for the past three years and you see that it has increased every year. Charles Green put the county on a firm financial basis when he was a commissioner with a lot of reserves now all the reserves are spent and the hospital money is being used as reserves to keep the state off our backs. Don't believe me ask a commissioner how much real money in in the reserve fund.
I watched this everyday until I had enough, Mrs Garner is a nice lady but she don't do nothing until Janet tells her to. If you think Terry Harwell was hired by Mrs Garner you crazy that was Janet Vanzant all the way.

10:25 Is right, but what do you do when your expenditures for groceries, medicine and utility pills are more than your Social Security check?

I hope no one that has a job don't have to come to this someday. It could you know. Sickness can get your savings, one or both of you can end up in nursing home and that takes money.
I know it's hard but the government needs to cut back just like families are having to. It's going to get worse not better.

No. The appraisals are not fair. Most appraisals increased upon McGill's statement of 'land values have increased in this county' yet that is not reflected in real estate sales. Ask any realtor.

How did Barrett get involved in this topic, guess the enabler just cant live without saying something to belittle the man. The way I look at it so what if he lost a hundred time, at least he had the guts to come out and try whereas some are to cowardly to even put their names on what they write here. Whatever else Barrett might be he is not a coward like so many of us.
