How Has The Increased Cost Of Utilities Impacted You?

How has the increases in electricity, water and sewage impacted you?
How do you feel about the Electric Company selling, Cable TV, Internet and Electricity?
If you knew that the electric rates were being used to subsidize the internet and cable operations would you feel different about Pulaski Electric providing those services?

I don't think it should be legal for them to increase customers electric rates in order to subsidize their internet and tv operations. This is totally unfair to people who can't get these services.

I for one am glad they offer these services as it gives me more options for these services. I do wish my parents could get their service but it is only a matter of time. Based on what I see on the Nashville and Huntsville news TVA is responsible for the rate increases, not PES.

When may I ask, are they going to bring these services to the rural areas? I have heard there are no plans to bring cable or internet to my neck of the woods. I would love to have those services, but can't because of where i live. I should not however, have to subsidize those who get them.

In order to keep their prices low enough to undercut the cable co and other providers it has to be subsidized by higher utility rates for all customers and if you don't like it you can cancel your electric service with them.

Exactly 7:45 they have us right where they want us. There was some changes after Barrett and some others raised hell with them and the big guy resigned but the cost is still to high and it ain't all TVA, part of it is these damn smart meters.

I hear PES is paying Energize.net a large sum of money to monitor these smart meters to increase there income so it doesn't look like they are loosing so much money. The money to pay for this service has to come from higher utility bills.Does anyone know if this is true?

When you provide a service that everyone needs and you have a monopoly you can pretty much charge what you want and do what you want.Thats the way i see it.we are at their mercy.

So you are suggesting, that if I don't like the service that is being provided, that I just tell them to turn off my power so I don't have to subsidize services that others get. How idiotic is that? If I don't get the services, I shouldn't have to pay for them. I wasn't being rude, but you are. I pay for what I get, but I should not have to pay for what you get.

I understood not all homes in Giles have the smart meter yet. Is it possible your home doesn't have it yet? Do they change the meter for them or what? I live out side of Giles now. Still think of it as my county and hope to be back in a year or two.

It's true not all homes and businesses have the so called "smart meters" on them. As they are installed by PES and go on line all the information about your use of electricity will be automatically sent to PES without a meter reader. Now according to research posted all over the internet not only are these meters unsafe, they are an invasion of your privacy and they give PES and TVA the power to alter your usage by charging higher rates at different times of the day. So what you are charged for cooking dinner at 5PM can be different from if you cooked it at 3AM.

For anyone who attended the PES meetings a couple of years back, they would acknowledge Mr. Barrett is absolutely correct as to what we were told. I will add there were several families in those meetings who spoke about having had exposure to 'smart meters' elsewhere and the program was disastrous. Some even told about fires that had happened in homes due to the fault of the meters. We also need to remember for the consumer to get any benefits from the programmed reduced power times, we would each have to do away with our current appliances and buy the latest appliances compatible with the meters. Upon objections from the masses, PES decided at that time to do nothing about the meter program in Giles county. Would seem enough time has passed for things to quieten down so PES starts again. Suppose this was decided in the PES meetings?

If you don't like the way PES does business you can always tell them that you don' need their service. They are just trying to provide a good service and a fair wage for their employees.whats wrong with that?

6:56 what a joke. They have a monopoly and only a few could live without their services today. Their workers are the highest paid in the county for the work they do and higher than some other counties for the same job. Things are better than a couple of years ago but still need to get better specially with the dumb meters that give them even more control over our lives.

"Now according to research posted all over the internet not only are these meters unsafe, they are an invasion of your privacy and they give PES and TVA the power to alter your usage by charging higher rates at different times of the day." FIrst, I have looked at some research on the internet also,I havent found anything that conclusively says these meters are unsafe, if you have found such a link please post it. Second, these meters dont give anyone the power to do anything. While I am not sure I like the smart meter thing just yet, I am not quite convinced just yet that they are the evil puppet of big brother. As for charging different rates for different times of the day, we already do that when we go to the movies.Saturday matinee prices are different than Saturday night prices, same thing with the lunch menu at the local restaurant, or even gas prices to some extent depending on what time of year it is, heating fuel hotel rooms, lots of things are rated differently based on time of use.

That's quite a stretch 7:59. None of those things you mentioned have a government sanctioned monopoly and people can choose to use or not use them. Electricity on the other hand has become a necessity.

I have a Chevy car that I have had no problem with but the manufacturer has just issued a recall because of some problem. Should I ignore the recall because I have no problems yet? When I lived in another state we had smart meters put on our appliances as part of a TVA project within two weeks our house was burned to the ground because the smart meter on the Water heater malfunctioned while we were at work. The fire inspector declared without question that the smart meter was at fault. It took over three years before TVA
was forced to reimburse our insurance company for the house.
How many fires must take place before they are a hazard.

google "electric smart meters and fires" and you will find a number of sites about this problem among others. Maybe Mr. Barrett will post a specific site for you but these are very enlightening.

These sites all talk about wireless smart meters. The meters deployed by PES arent wireless are they? As I said earlier I am not sure I am for or against these things yet. I want to know more about them. On the surface not having to run trucks to read the meters seems like a good idea. I just want more info, I wasn't spewing unless you think anything posted on here is spewing. The point I was trying to make earlier and you seem to miss is we pay different rates for all sorts of things in life. Sometimes I agree with Barrett, sometimes I dont. I am just trying to have a discussion that is all. I try to keep an open mind about things until all the facts are in.

I thought your post was to anyone, not a certain person. Guess 1:40 thought it was him/her.

Anyway thanks for posting the site. I had been trying to find something about smart meters to no avail.

1:40 said the article was about wireless meters and what is in Giles county isn't.
Maybe he problem with wireless has made them change to meters with wire.

One way or the other want it cause people to loose their jobs.
which I thought computers would take less people, but I believe it takes more, someone has to fix the problems with them.

I wrote 1:40 and 7:59 and I am not sure if the smart meters in Giles county are wireless or not. There seems to be 2 types. All the articles I saw that had negative things to say about them all seemed to be talking about the wireless model, I havent seen much about the wired version. I agree with your thoughts about computers. I have been thinking if this does come through and there is no longer a need for meter readers could those people move to the tree trimming crew or maybe transfer to another city department. I hate the thought of someone being put out of work because of automation.

Maybe the new solar panel farm that will produce 1.4 megawatts of power will offer an alternative to pes and their high rates.Does anyone know when this system will go online and who will they sell their electricity to?

The electricity, if it ever happens will be sold to PES and they will continue to charge just as they do now. When the government stops paying the bills the thing will close up like most of the other expensive paybacks to democrat donors.

There is no free power service in Giles county. For those who cant pay their bill they have to try to get help through local churches, but even the churches have limited funds for assistance so its not always possible to help. Then the power gets cut off. There are many families living in Giles county without power. They cook on outside grills.
