Why Would Anyone Brag About Making Another Person Cry?
Whether it's the result of insecurity, incompetency, the fabled short man syndrome, a warped sense of humor, boredom or just the out of control power of an immature bully bragging about making another person's life miserable is just about as low as a person can go in my opinion.
Why would a school principal seem to take such pleasure in demeaning others, publicly criticizing the former principal, who by most measures did an outstanding job, and publicly brag to other principals about making a teacher cry?
It's not enough that major turmoil seems to have been created at Elkton School for no other reason than an insecurity in the leader. The bigger problem is that this turmoil will obviously continue to grow if the tyrannical and even sadistic behavior is allowed to continue. While I agree that there are certainly some teachers that deserve to be fired I certainly do not agree that a teacher who is felt to be ineffective should be "picked on" and "belittled" in front of other teachers, staff and even students and made to cry then have some two bit punk brag about making their life miserable and pushing them off on another school.

Sometimes change needs to happen and it isn't always easy or pretty. I would imagine that the level of education at Elkton hasn't been very good. That would leave Dr. Gonzales to have to make decisions that are in the best interest of the students. Currently, it is unfortunate that schools get hung with bad teachers that should have been let go before tenure. If you can't get rid of them by letting them go you have to get them to go out on their own. It is all about the childs education. You folks seem to take everything personal. Barrett is a real dumbass by making the remarks he did with this topic. If I were someone that he talked about so much he would have many chances to do it to people in the future.
Actually the level of education at Elkton and Minor Hill is the highest in the county. The country schools are doing better than Bridgeforth and Southside

Gonzo is not a professional and tries to make up for his shortcomings by being loud and obnoxious and putting everyone else down.
I would love to know who started the rumor that "bad" teachers who have tenure can't be fired! Bad teachers have no protection from dismissal. Tenure is simply DUE PROCESS! It means the principal can't be having a bad day and take it out on the teacher. They have to document the incompetance and offer avenues of correction, which the "bad" teacher may or may not choose to take advantage of. The problem with the system is administrators who don't wish to go to the trouble or time of investing in one of their staff members. It's easier to bully, whine and complain. Tenure is simply employer decency, and not firing on a whim. Why do people persist in spreading the lie that tenure makes one fireproof. And by the way, those that want to blame the so called unions: I can't think of a single thing that TEA did for teacher's last year, other than go along with the (and I am a Republican) Governor's efforts to demoralize all Tennessee teachers! (for those of you who have enjoyed the stress of the teachers lately, I am delighted (NOT) to inform you that he was able to drive many excellent teachers into early retirement.
Let the old teachers go. Things are different these days and will continue to be that way. I had to deal with Hughes in the 8th grade at Richland. He was one sorry excuse for an educator but was able to keep his job because he had been there for so long. Don't think that you are fooling the public because you are a teacher and are crying about it. There are many more parents in this community than teachers and we want to see the best for out children. The only people I have ever seen complain in any business or profession are the ones that weren't able to perform at the level required due to lack of knowledge or laziness. The good teachers will succeed.

The stress is due to useless paperwork, that proves nothing and being forced to teach to the TEST, rather than inspire a child to reach for the stars, use their imagination, build up their character, and believe in themselves. This is the link to the Tennessee Department Report Card for the Giles County School System for 2011. http://edu.reportcard.state.tn.us/pls/apex/f?p=200:20:1940983551861351::NO::: If you scroll all the way down to the bottom you will see that while Elkton School is in Good Standing and has been 4 of the last 5 years, Southside is in School Improvement 1 which means they have failed to meet requirements for 2 years in a row. Bridgeforth also missed the requirements last year and is a Target school. So as you can see my facts are straight.
And we would like to see the same from you 8:18.

I'm sorry but your information would have been correct if we had remained under the "No Child Left Behind" but the Governor pushed for and received permission to remove Tennessee from NCLB. Tennessee is now under the guidelines of "First to the Top" which changed the troubled schools. The two Giles County schools now on "the list" are Giles County High School and Minor Hill School. I have not looked at the list for 2012 so this could change very soon since the scores are out.
In any case, the original statement of "I would imagine that the level of education at Elkton hasn't been very good"is simply untrue whether you look at it through the lens of No Child Left Behind or Race to the Top.

Terry Hughes was not a good educator. We had to sit in silence while he nursed hangovers. I saw firsthand the way he acted when he was out of the classroom and it affected him during school. Plenty of parents complained. It is hard to get rid of a teacher once they have tenure. Unions make sure of that. Don't let any of the teachers tell you otherwise. There are several teachers in my family so I do know what goes on.

Can we get past teachers from years ago (especially the now deceased) and discuss TODAY!! Tenure is not what it once was - because of the new evaluation system teachers CAN be let go. There are quite a few teachers that are in the schools TODAY that need to work much harder than before and stop assuming they will have a job regardless!

Actually, Mrs.White and Terry Hughes were the best of friends. BTW 7:00, Mrs. White is still alive and teaching. 6:38, Mrs. White started teaching me in 1976 at Beech Hill High School. I think if Terry was the ass that you make him out to be, he and Delores would not have been such close friends.

Garner's office, money taken for specific reason, ins, NOT paid,(not a month late you understand, simply NOT paid), teachers notified by ins co. that premiums not paid, complaints come in, insurance suddenly paid, all on Loretta's time. 5:24, you are wrong. The fact is that incompetance must be documented by an administrator. The adminstrator must then offer corrective options. If the educator does not comply, they can and should be dismissed. The unions have little or no influence now, and if the truth be told, truly never did. Compare starting salary of a teacher nationwide, first year, to say a teamster or UAW member with no college and tell me again how powerful the teacher union is.

Mr. Gonzales is looking good due to the hard work Mr. Polly and his staff accomplished witht he students and good scores. It will show later that the scores will drop due to poor morale and dislike for Dr. Gonzales. He has a few on his side, but very few. He does have short man syndrome as well as Bill Holt. The board members have gotten so many complaints about Mr. Gonzales but Tee won't acknowlege the request from board members to show that he has investigated and reconciled the problems. Mr. Polly was a very laid back person that had all teh repsect from his teachers, love of his students and repsect of his parents. I worked with him and he handled cases so well as to where other principals would have paddled and sent them packing. Great loss when Mr. Polly retired. Mr. Gonzales is punishnent and doesn't deserve any positive recognition for the scores. Keep up for the next few years and see how they drop.
On another note. Mr. Smith at Bridgeforth was honored some months back. He is a magnificent principal. After the recognition he was evaluated by tee jackson. The butt hole scored him low on everything. Talking about a jealous man. He acts like Bridgeforth doesn't exist. Sounds almost racist.

I sure agree with you on that, but here is the problem...principals like Bill Holt need this lesson the most. Now, he may not care how he is treated or talked to, but yet pouts when he does not get respect because "the last time I looked, I thought I was principal". If we have heard that once, we have heard it a million times. Probably nothing will be done, as is usual. More and more reason for this charter to be passed so people can start having a say in what goes on. I think it would be a good thing for Giles county.
I wish someone would explain to me how we don't have a say with the current government? I call my commissioners when I want my opinion heard and they listen and are very nice and informative. I think that some of you probably voted for the commissioners that you talk about constantly. Vote them out if you don't like it. What do you think the charter is going to change about that? Yeah, it sounds like a load of crap if you ask me. It is fact that Barrett has a grudge. If he wan't such an old man I think someone would have busted his nose by now. If I didn't feel sorry for him I might do it myself. The best thing Barrett could do is move somewhere and start all over. He has burned too many bridges to be a credible source in this town.
I am a teacher at Elkton. I have seen Dr. Gonzales, first hand, belittle another employee. I can vouch that the school atmosphere has changed dramatically. I won't go as far to say that he has done nothing for the school. Some of his influences have been positive. However, I can vouch that the original blog posted by Mr. Barter is true. At least the part about Dr. Gonzales making teachers cry. I don't know if he was bragging about it (though I wouldn't put it past him.) You want to know why we teachers don't band together and make a stand? We are scared... scared that if we do and nothing comes from it our heads will be left on the chopping block. He does do our evaluations. It is for this very reason that myself and others
in thesame boat will not give our names (here or in letters sent to board members). With Gonzales and Jackson being on such chummy terms we are afraid we are putting the proverbial nuse around our neck.

In total aggreement with the post left by the Elkton teacher. School board members received anonymous letters about things happening at Elkton. They could not act on them (via a school board member) without signatures. Signatures were not put on letters because of fear of repercussions. Laws may keep you from being fired, but the workplace could become even worse-to the point of having to leave your job. Rumors were that the information in the letters was being investigated, and there were people from the central office wandering around the school from time to time, but very few teachers were asked about the school. Some teachers might be willing to answer questions, if questions were asked.
Yes, some teachers have cried because of remarks made to them by the principal. Yes, the principal belittles others. Yes, the principal has had a negative effect on teacher/school morale. Yes, there have been some positive changes, but they are far outweighed by the negative.

When I became a teacher I was very proud of the opportunity to teach children then the little tyrant came and the tension can be felt as soon as one walks into the school. I understand that's the same way it was when he worked in a local factory.

I understand if you feel a teacher isn't doing all that they to can to educate young minds having a conference or inspiring them to do better, but I cannot understand demeaning and belittling others. I mean after all we are not only adults, but educated professionals. In todays society we are not only responsible for teaching the "three r's." We are expected to teach a fourth "r" ... respect. Our students must learn to respect the world around them and find responsible solutions to the social problems that they encounter in their life. Any teacher who is worthwhile knows that students often learn through observation. They observe that Dr. G holds no respect for the teachers and so students (who have little or no moral guidence at home) learn through observation that respect is not needed. This is evident in the behavior of last years seventh and eighth students and how they spoke and acted toward their teachers and peers. In all my years at Elkton I have never seen such.
For Mr. or Mrs. 6:53, know and work with these teachers and know them to be competent, hard working, and inspired individuals. Can you say the say the same? Tell me who are you or how do you know whether these teachers have been doing their jobs? I'm guessing by the gross inacuracy of your remarks that your information comes either from second hand informatin from one of Dr. G's favored few (i.e. those who lap up his pontificating) or more likely your own fevered imaginings concocted inside your own mad head.
P.S. If you want to have it out with Mr. Barrett, please start your own anti Barrett thread and keep your opinions of him in that thread alone. I don't even know the man and am beginning to like him simply you don't. You are hurting your own cause by bringing him up every post.

Michale Gonzales is the Administrator for Elkton School. In one year he has put much needed technology in the classrooms, he has made it a point to find professional development workshops, websites, and reference material so his staff will be prepared for the changes that are occuring in education. He has made improvements to the school building and the grounds; he has cleaned clutter and scrape out of classrooms and out buildings but most of all he has raised the bar. Michael Gonzales has high expectations for Elkton's students, parents, and staff. He wants to see every student at Elkton perform at an advanced level and he expects his staff to do everything in their power to make it happen. HE IS ALL ABOUT EDUCATION and what is best for Elkton students. Maybe the district one board member and the other small thinking individuals need to shut up and bow out. If there are disgruntled teachers at Elkton School it is because they are expected to revise their tired old lesson plans, turn off their TVs and videos, stay off the playground and in the classroom and put in a full days work.

How is berating teachers in front of students "what is best for Elkton students"? If you are disappointed with an employees job performance then correct them in a proper manner, which is not in front of kids. That action alone destroys the students confidence in a teacher and the teacher and the children suffer.
Isuggest the teachers start recording Gonzales reactions and file creating hostile working environment charges against Gonzales. See if he acts like that in front of the judge.

While Mr. Gonzales may have worked on cleaning up the out building at Elkton he was certainly not the driving force nor the culmination of the efforts. The initial effort and most of the work was done by one family. That same family has been pushed out of the PTO and now the PTO is primarily bossed by the principal not led by the officers of the organization.
It's not a policy of cooperation as a leader would seek but total dominance as a dictator demands that has destroyed the cohesive atmosphere at the school and replaced it with an intensely hostile work place.
For several months I have sat on information waiting for the school system to investigate and do the right thing. Mr Jackson has chosen to whitewash the whole incident rather than fire or even reprimand Mr Gonzales for not only unprofessional behavior but behavior that endangered the very life and well being of a student.
Last year a special needs student who is autistic became upset at school. In the past the student would have been taken to Mr Polly's office and allowed to calm down in a quiet atmosphere. The teacher took the child to the office as required and the secretary and teacher began to work with the child. Mr. Gonzales enters and takes over. The child says he is leaving and Mr Gonzales tells him OK, he then allowed the child to leave the school, he did follow for a distance but when the child completely left the school property and his sight Mr. Gonzales called the school secretary and told her not to call 9-1-1 but to call the Elkton police to find the child.
this is not the behavior of a leader or even a responsible adult but it was first ignored then covered up.
It's time for an outside investigation and disciplinary action to be taken as this is only one of several severe breeches of responsible behavior.
The child's parents needs to call the tv stations and file a warrant out against the great dr. g

The facts brought up concerning the PTO family 'pushed out' are not correct as well as the child in question that left the school being Autistic.
I believe this blog can air things that might otherwise be swept under the rug with no one to notice, but Mr. Barrett, please check your facts, not just accept them before you air them. You make your blog seem petty and unreliable when you just repeat rumors.
Ask your PTO source the real reason they were 'pushed out'. There were strict procedures broken by their own personal choices. Unless they want to err their bad choices then they should leave things alone.
This is typical of Barrett. He takes rumors and heresay and makes it public information. It is known that he has a grudge against Dr. G. Same old tired rhetoric from a tired old man of little importance.

The only thing I can say about the McAlister case is that it was settled. No one involved with it can discuss it because McAlister requested it be sealed. I can say I am still enjoying my house and all my possessions.
As for Mr. Gonzales the facts speak for them-self and there are a large number of eye witnesses that will testify to those facts as I stated them.

I work at Elkton school and I am pretty sure I am the teacher the "little DR" was so proud of bullying. We try to teach our students not to bully others, but I suppose he thinks he is above the rules. I would hate to now my whole staff despises me!o I hope he knows people get what they deserve. Maybe without Tee to protect him now he will know how it feels to be belittled and berated on a daily basis. What goes around comes around Gonzo!!!

As a former student at elkton I can honestly say that he had far from the students best interest in mind. The students didn't and still don't respect him and many of them became defiant just because of how he treated us. We are kids and instead of being able to have some fun at school we were treated as if in the military. All I'm saying is that sometimes kids need to be kids and play on the playground. After a while we're tired of hearing our teachers ramble on about stuff that we could care less about. Dr.G never should have been hired to work with elementary and middle school children he has no compassion and is a bully to all.
As a former teacher at Elkton I agree with the former students response. I would also like to mention that there is an atmosphere that you at not really welcom past the front office. I donot believe that any other adninistration left the visitor with that feeling.

When Mr. Polly was there a plan was in place where the children were taken to the office. There the princeipal, another teacher and other office personnel along with the school's guidance counselor and school nurse worked with the child to de-esculate the situation. I have seen the plan in work many times, it worked in almost all situations.
What is so disturbing here is that the child was out of the Principal's sight and supervision.
How much time does it take a sex pervert to abduct a child?
How long does it take a car to hit a child running away from the school grounds.
How fast do the trailor trucks travel around this school while an upset child is running away from a bad situation.
Thank the Lord that this did not happen but so much could have happened that it should never happen at Elkton again.
Perhaps now that he has experienced the situation he will handle it with some type of organization---keeping the child's safety as the most important part of the problem.
Perphaps experience will help many of the situations at Elkton.
There definately seems to be a lot of tension between Mr. G. and the staff that is putting a lot of strain on people who have been dedicated to teaching for many years and according to scores have been doing that job and leading on state mandated testing scores.
I hope that the parents will support the teachers in their efforts to keep the children's scores at the top of the reports.
