"Say It Ain't So Joe, Say It Ain't So"

Say it ain't happening right here in River City folks!

Will someone please tell me it isn't true, that the GCHS football coaches are all leaving for greener pastures but in the meantime they are drawing a full salary from Giles County for less than a full day of "teaching" as they go to their new school while having Giles County pay for substitutes for them here. Would even this School Board approve and allow such a thing to happen? Well someone approved it and are allowing it because it's happening everyday.

It seems the head coach leaves early everyday and takes at least one of the asst. coaches with him. That means they are both getting full pay even though they are doing half a days work but to rub salt in the cut, substitute teachers have to be hired to cover the classes those two coaches are missing thus adding another expense to the taxpayers. It sure seems the school system has a lot of money to throw around these days.

This has been happening all year in regards to the head coach. The "official" story is that he teaches 4 classes a day. I hear from students that he is only in the school building for lunch and one other period and not for lunch on Friday. Also why do the players and coaches drive out onto the "walking" track to practice and work out. Why not use the parking lot my taxes paid for?

I guess since the team had such a good year last season the coaches feel they need a bonus. This is an issue Dr. Webb is going to have to address in the coming months in his effort to improve the county educational system. Sports are great but educational standards are more important.

The School Board isn't in charge of day to day actions and you know that. If this is true, then the principle needs to be fired and that is done by the superintendent. And if she is letting this happen, then let's hope Dr. Webb takes care of that problem when he takes over.

Question! How can our school system and it's security allow Allen Barrett to walk in to a school without any need whatsoever for being there? Isn't this trespassing and a breach of security. I don't want him anywhere close to my kids and demand he not be allowed to walk in any school.

The School Boards job is to hire a director, their only employee, and to approve budget. They do not hire and fire teachers, they do not run the schools. If you have an issue you can ask them to talk to the director who can do something about it or you can talk to the director personally, which is what I would recommend. If no one says anything to the director they may not know it.

5:52 Here is the problem, WAB has no assets as evidenced by the McAlister Case. One could spend several thousand dollars suing him with no reward (he has no assets, no money no nothing) but a judgement. until he dies or divorces! But I would be more than happy to contribute to a fund to bring him to his knees. A simple judgement could cause him a lot of problems. I'm from Alabama and know that you can get a judgement against someone even if property is incumbered (with spouse). It would tie that property up indefinitely. You can even lock bank accounts titled jointly and even have his drivers license suspended until judgement settled? Any takers?

If Barrett enters any school in this county again without reason whatsoever, he should be arrested for trespassing on the spot. The schools are not a place for idiots like him to be roaming freely. Most schools have locked doors to prevent this and all require you to sign in. NOT ONE OF THEM allow a person to walk freely around the school. Arrest him!

To 12:25 You identified yourself by the way you stared at me when I was at Richland and then reflected that same anger in your comments.

For the other posters, if there are any, who suffer from the same hysteria, you may want to look up the meaning of that word and its history, of irrational thinking and utter stupidity. You can go to any school that I have been in during the past two years and check on the wild claims that I just wander in and freely walk around.
I did recently visit Richland High School, where I was apparently spotted by one of the most incompetent people in school administration. What this person failed to say is that the front door of the school was locked and I was let in by a student assigned to that duty. I was escorted to the sign-in table where I stated that I wanted to speak with Dr. Webb. He was contacted and I signed in. Dr. Webb was in the cafeteria and he asked that I come there. I was escorted by the same student, a senior, to the cafeteria where I met Dr. Webb and had a very good discussion. I stated, among other things we discussed, that while he was not my first choice for Director he had my full support and assured him that the controversy over his proposed salary had nothing to do with him personally but was simply a matter of procedures gone wrong. I repeated my support and stated if there was anything I could do in that way just let me know. He thanked me for coming and we agreed that our meeting had been very productive. I then went back to the greeters table signed out and left.
So what's the big deal, mostly the simple fact a brain dead dunce believed they could use this as a means of attack against me. Sorry but as usual jealousy, hatred, frustration and stupidity have again blinded rational thought and speech.

I will have to disagree with your evaluation of the topics 6:46. Also there is no reason why a person should lower themselves to address people writing out of hate. Dont come to me asking for any more taxes OF ANY KIND! When I see the County wasting my tax dollars in ways such as this, it makes me mad! Until we can get our administratin in EVERY department to cut this wastful spending, then do not come to me and say give me more. i myself am stuggling everyday to make ends meet and am tired of this spending. Take our money and use it wisely but overhiring and overpaying is getting out of control. The government is not supposed to be the largest employer in the State of County. It's purpose is not to excessly hire and overpay but to make sure our money is used to service the people of this county and when you hire too many people that sit around and take advantage of the county, then we the taxpayer need to start voting the head administators out and replace them with ones that will do what is right! The school system is the first place we need to start looking.

To the 25 April 8:54 PM poster.
If you were not at the school how would you know how there was more than two people that I encountered? You see I was very careful in my observations and there was only one person who was there and dumb enough to post such a stupid statement.
You state that you don’t like the fact that I was even in the school, well. Perhaps I don’t like the fact that you are taking up space on this planet does that make any difference. Just as you have the right to be on the planet I have the right to go to a school that my tax money is helping pay for, so can we agree on that?
You state, “I also find it very humorous that you go there seeking the blessing or forgiveness of Dr. Webb”. You make an extreme assumption that again shows the intellectual limitations you suffer under. I neither sought the blessing or forgiveness of Dr. Webb, I merely sought to meet with him face to face and get to know each other a little better. I believe that was accomplished. The other thing was to try and make him aware that regardless of what people like you might think and spread he had my support as an active involved citizen. Anything else we discussed is not necessarily any of your business.
Again you show extreme ignorance in your assumptions that you know something about who I am, who I associate with what my inner feelings and thoughts are and how I spend my time. Your statement “I do feel sorry for you and your life” is another example of your incredible ignorance of your subject. I have had a very full life and were God to call me home today I would not have to face Him filled with regrets. I have had the privilege of travelling to many different countries and most of the states. No one in this county has a hold on me and that’s what seems to trouble most of the “self-proclaimed elite” I have a wonderful family that I am very proud of each being self-sufficient, independent, intelligent and possessive of strong moral characters among many other things. So I believe a thorough examination of your “sorry” would actually reveal that clearly it’s jealousy that motivates your anger toward me.

Now as for your comments about my wife, I would remind you that she is not involved in any way with this blog, she doesn't even read it, nor is she involved in any of my political activities so I consider her as with other people’s uninvolved family members as off limits for discussion.

As for suicide and your offer to donate the bullet, I appreciate your loving offer but doubt you could afford the bullet it takes a 50 cal. As I would not consider going out with anything less than a Barrett M107A1 CQ 50 BMG 20" with a Vortex Razor 5-20X50.
Perhaps you could show your comments to your pastor and see if he would help you with the funds for that bullet?

It's bad enough with some of the comments that are made on this sight and Allen allows it, but one person that should never and I mean never be mention is his wife. She is the kindest and sweetest person you'll ever meet. And you, I'm sure would question her mental status by being married to Allen, but she loves unconditionally. So let her be. And Allen why don't you not publish anything that doesn't stick with the subject. I love to learn from this blog. I didn't have a clue this was going on with the coaches, but not surprised. But when you let the idiots steer away from the subject it just bores me and I get off the sight. It would be a great blog if you would do that. FYI coach O'Connor lined up his sub for every Friday before and during football season. She knew to be there from the first Friday on. And what the system is allowing is sheer theft from the tax payers. That is one area that could be cut in the budget,Subs, if they weren't so Sucky. And don't expect much from Webb when it comes to the coaches. He loves sports. Heard a comment from someone who had talked to a county official and they said that Tee Jackson might be put at Richland. I think Don Story would deserve Tee or Mike Gonsoles for all his wheeling and dealings to keep McMasters out and Laxson. Old Don can be bought off by favors just like others on the Board, Mr. Bryant.

5:28, you may well have convinced yourself that the reason you post anonymously is that you have a successful and meaningful life, but I don't think anyone else is buying that. I know for a fact that you won't tell me your name out of nothing more than fear. I understand that. Disability or not, I feel quite confident that I would have you crying for your momma in a matter of minutes. If you doubt me, simply sign your name, and we'll put my theory to the test.

As for grammar and style, you should proofread your own post. You missed a comma after "and" in your third sentence. It's the independent clause rule which I'm sure you've never heard of. Also, high school does not need to be capitalized as you used it. It does not refer to a specific institution, so lower case is the correct way to go. There are many websites out there that you can study on without embarrassing yourself in front of anyone. Better luck in the future, puppet master.

BTW, it would be better if we met somewhere. Should you come to my house and harass my family, you will most certainly be leaving in a prone position on a gurney.

By the way, appropriations are made in the budget each year to cover the expense of a "substitute teacher" for all teachers' and teacher assistants' for their personal and sick leave days each school year.

A substitute teacher with a college degree only receives $50.50 per day which equates to $7.21 per hour for a 7 hour day.

I checked on what the pay was for a substitute teacher and what hours they are responsible.

I for one would like to read the blog one time where it sticks to the subject. If yall want to talk smack about whoever then start your on blog. I do think it is very wrong how the EX coaches are ripping the GC tax payers off. The most important thing is how they are mistreating the players. David OConner should have been gone two years ago when he turned in his notice to goto Lincoln Co., but didn't get his way, so what did they do let him stay. Every since they have step foot in GCHS they have drained the school system. Aids with more experience were let go to make sure is brother Joe kept his job. They did get the program back on track, but I think it is pretty sorry how Oconner and his followers have mistreated the players, students, teachers and tax payers of Giles County. I wish Mr. Cardin had let them all go when they said they were leaving. Back to Oconner teaching is a joke. If he showed up for class all he did was text his ex wife and eat in class. No teaching was ever done. Someone needs to put a stop to them leaving everyday early or not coming at all. The worst part of it is their still getting paid for coaching football and do nothing with the boys. I think also the probation should follow Oconner since he was the one who got GCHS in trouble in the first place. Get out of Giles County and please don't you show your bald head here again and same with the followers. If they haven't noticed at school or around the county NO ONE has any respect for your clan.

Once again,11:07/12:43, you make assumptions based on your feelings towards Barrett. My opinion of you is not derived from anything Allen posted, rather on the things you yourself have written. You use innuendo and semantics as your weapons of choice for the sole purpose of calling people names without actually being direct about it. It amounts to the same thing. You always throw in "my opinion" or "describing" to give yourself an out when someone calls you on your behavior. When you say someone acts like a duck (describing behavior here),you are in effect calling that person a duck. Spin it all you wish, but that is my problem with you. I would have respect for you if you just went ahead and called that person a duck outright. I feel you are being unrealistic in pleading for other people to change when you yourself are unwilling to do the same. I don't expect my comment to make any difference as you will no doubt "translate" what I've said to fit your own twisted code of honor. The pity I feel for you is only surpassed by the shame I have for your friends and family.

No, I see you people as envious troublemakers who, put simply, want to be in charge. Thank God, the voters of Giles County see them for what they are and keep them at bay. Thank God! A THAT is what I think the real problem is with your jealous, resentful, and hateful leader! And YOU have swallowed that way of thinking, hook, line and sinker! Such a shame.

7:17 It seems that your comments about other people calling names and making criticisms was filled with nasty name calling and criticisms. Makes me wonder if you were writing about others or doing a self analysis?
I have read this blog a log time and while I don't always agree with Mr. Barrett's methods but I have yet to find where he lied or failed to provide facts to back up what he has stated.
You and CG, the enabler and others have spread rumors, made up stuff and made outrageous claims in defense of your point of view without ever offering one single fact that I have seen to support it.
The reason I believe Mr. Barrett has gotten so much criticism is he signs his name and thus gives people someone to focus on. Others who have been identified either by CG or enabler have received about the same amount of criticism.
I respect Mr. Barrett for his efforts and for putting his name on here, you and I on the other hand are obviously cowards and that makes Mr. Barrett even more scorned because his name highlights our cowardliness.

You say you respect Barrett. Unbelievable. I have zero respect for hypocrisy and troublemaking, and you shouldn't either. Furthermore, you should not be a partaker in that.
I won't argue with you about Barrett's signing his posts. I believe he signs MOST of them. As for me, I don't need that spotlight.
Lastly, you speak of cowardliness. You must surely realize that some of us, for various reasons, have to post anonymously. That hardly makes us cowards. I'd prefer to say prudent.

I'm not trying to defend Mr. Barrett, he seems able to handle that, I'm just tied of reading your hypocrisy. Regardless of your rationalizations, when you attack someone, criticize them, call them hateful names and do it all from an anonymous posting that is cowardly. I understand those who must protect their jobs or family posting as anonymous and that is reasonable but posting such mean spirited things as you do is nothing less than cowardly which makes you a coward.

I'm sure you don't behave like this anywhere except on this blog. You fail to answer any questions that are posed to you on here, but I think this is a legitimate one. Why do you not sign your name? What you need to realize is that some children wouldn't even be in school if it wasn't for athletics and the coaches that mentor them. Some kids can't make straight A's or the honor roll. Some kids get hope from their athletic ability.

I posted 9:22
I said he MUST be a coach, not that for sure he was and I do hope he isn't teaching my children.

10:41 Nut, nothing said it was only to lawman. 9:22 said he must be a coach. But you are always right aren't you. I wonder if you ever read what you post.

I would have to agree with the first senrtence of Lawman's Friday, May 3, 5:36 PM post. Very few of Giles County's kids will amount to anything in view of the world outside of Giles County. The iPod/Entitlement generation just doesn't give a crap and has come to expect instantaneous self gratification; and, somebody or something doing everything for them.

I would bet that most will become a part of the welfare tax burden that 47% of the American population pays for their up keep. Their best chance for success is to MOVE THE HECK AWAY FROM HERE.

I also agree with his statement regarding parenting, and this is largely do to the seemingly perpetual lack of qualified parents, notg unqualified teachers. If that is true aren't parents supposed to be teachers?

Ignorance tends to breed ignorance.

Teachers are qualified by their degree, but their abilities and methods of teaching differ due to a number of variables. Most importantly is the desire and ability of the student. When one or more students disrupt the classroom then the teacher has to divert themselves from the lesson and attend to a discipline problem, thus depriving the other students their education.

Why do students disrupt the classroom? Many of them do it because they aren't good at anything else that gives them the attention of their peers that they so much desire, unlike atheletes or others who participate in activites outside the classroom.

Lawman blames the teacher, I blame the the student, his or her "parents", and society for accepting personal failure as being a direct or indirect result from poor personal decisions being made here, now and in the past.

Put failure back on those who should be accepting the responsibility of the their own actions and poor decisions they made.

Enjoy your teenage years Lawman? They better temper that with a vision of a future that they can attain. Sports only produces entertaiment. There's more to this world than entertainment.

Sports produces discipline to many students that would be dealing drugs or getting into trouble. Having a sense of community and family through athletic teams gives them far more hope for the future than any teacher could offer them in the classroom.

Not every kid is a scholar or an athlete. That is the beauty of it. The school system offers something for all kids. The teachers need to stop complaining about coaches and sports teams.

I agree with much of your post, 9:59.

The Lawman has spoken.

9:59--Good post. Lawman, you need to get off the teachers. They carry the burden of teahing most of the children in this county. That includes the parents who want ANYONE else to do their jobs. I recall a few years ago when some of the athletes on a county football team were dealing drugs, arrested and put back on the team. What was the coach teaching there? Your turn.

The Lawman is talking nonsense. Teachers have a hard enough job without coaches getting in the way. Children need a good education a lot more than they need sports. There are very limited jobs in professional sports. The world is open with a good education.

Yea, 9:59. I have said all along that the classroom teacher is a hero and that if the obstacles placed in their way by politicians, administrators and parents were removed wonders of accomplishment could be realized.
While many understand that ignorance breeds ignorance it seems that almost as many are content with their ignorance. Now before some of those people get their backs all up ignorance is not an ugly or slanderous word it's the result of ignorance unabated that becomes stupidity and that is ugly.

My administrator does not put obstacles in my way. It is the state legislature that has placed them there. Too many of them are old men who have no knowledge of what goes on in a school and classroom each day. My administrator is great at the job he does and helps each of his teachers.

The federal government is largely responsible for the current educational debacle. Twelve or thirteen years of "No Child Left Behind" is enough. The federal government has no business getting involved in education in the first place. Billions of dollars would be saved if that federal department was eliminated. The states could keep the money that they send to the federal government and avoid federal mandates, which basically amounts to extortion. Each state should determine its own needs and requirements and shouldn't be financially responsible for other states.

Lawman, don't you believe that students should be responsible for themselves and exercise discipline, respect and good conduct in the classroom? Is atheletics or some other extra-cirricular activity the only place where a student or a student athelete can DEVELOP discipline?

Discipline is not produced, it is developed. One of the things about developing a mental attribute such as disciple is that you don't get to pick the time, place or conditions that you have to use that skill.

Lawman, based on your second sentence of your May 04, 10:22 post it seems you may never have had a good teacher, or you don't think very of the teachers we have in Giles County. There are some very fine teachers at Giles County schools, and some of them are even coaches.

What is occuring is that students are not coming into the school with their PARENTS demanding that their children accept the idea that they are in school, first to learn, and all else is secondary.

There are a lot of variables in teaching, some are teacher dependent and some are student dependent. The student has to make the effort to learn the subject in the manner by which the information as it is being presented. The teacher is a professional who is supposed to teach a student how to learn a subject by presenting the information in a manner that they can understand. Of course, all students are not the same and that is what makes the job so difficult. Likewise, not all teachers can reach all of their students for a variety of reasons. The iPod/Instantaneous Self-gratification generation needs to understand that they are not the only person in the room and their parents need to make sure that they understand that.

It seems to me that it is incumbent on the student to develop and exercise discipline while learning to achieve something in life - or playing ball - or acting in a play - or playing an instrument. The parents should demand this of their children.

Coach or teacher should show up to do the job they were hired to do only leave for an emergency. They have one sick day a month, take or save it for another time. Two or is it more personal days a year. If the coaches are leaving and not teaching their afternoon classes they should be fired.

9:58--The problem with the states keeping their own money for education and doing away with federal oversight is that some states would not be able to afford good and well financed education. It would be like the situation that led to a law suit in Tennessee a few years ago. The small counties (states) cannot compete with the more fluent counties (states), thus, more unfairness in what can be done by the poor counties (states). The federal funds sent to the states are primarily used for special education services. The state provides the majority of the money used by the school systems across the state. Look at Williamson County. It has plenty of money and is ahead of much of the rest of the state. When you can pay more for great teachers, they will flock to those counties, e.g., Williamson, Rutherford, Blount, etc.
Sad to say, money is needed in education and it takes a lot of it to be on an equal playing field with others. Giles County just doesn't have the funds to recruit and retain many of what's needed to compete.

10:51 I totally agree that they should be there to do their job or be fired, but I think the principals, school board, Debbie Braden and comminsioners have let this go to far. First of all they should have been let go as soon as they turned their notice in to leave. Then Mr. Cardin has set around to long when he should been in search of teachers/coaches for months. The students, teachers and football players at GCHS have been done wrong. The teachers that are trying to teach can't teach class because the coaches don't care and are letting the students run the halls and could care less if they showed up for class. OConner tried to leave two years ago and they should of let his bald headed butt leave then. Joe OConner got to keep his Aid job last year over other aids that had been there for 10+ years longer than him just because he was a coach and walks the hall doing nothing. As soon as they stopped working with the players their pay should have been cut then. OConner has never been a teacher while he was there. He couldn't turn in his roll call, never taught because he was never there and when he was there all he did in class was text his wife and eat. Osteen, Beddingfield and Cobb are just yes boys to OConner. I for one are with the teachers and students at GCHS and can't wait until May 21st until they have left Giles County for good because Im tired of my child coming in from school talking about what is going on.

If you think your analogy of the states being "counties" of the federal government, then you have a poor understanding of our republic system of federal government and need to review your American civics lessons.

Messrs. Osteen, Beddingfield and Cobb are good teachers. All you have to do is have good substitute teachers for them when they are absent.
