Has The Fix Been Put In On Selecting A School Director?

A very interesting question has arisen after the first two applicants were interviewed for school director this morning,

Did one applicant have access to the questions prior to the interview?

Based on the level of comfort demonstrated by one applicant and the seemingly expectant attitude toward the next question some became suspicious. While no one seems willing to publicly question the situation at this time it certainly seems questions are being raised behind the scenes.

I fear this whole process, from paying over $8,000.00 to folks in Nashville to search out five of the best applicants and getting only four that were selected by internet searches to making commitments to include the other local applicant then breaking that commitment, has become clouded with controversy.

While the people of Giles County deserve much better I fear they will once again settle for less than the best because buddies and pals said it should be this way.

It was stated at the meeting with TSBA that the books were public knowledge. Copies of the questions were given to several people including the press. How can you claim there was anything controversial? If no one was supposed to have copies then why would the press be given copies?

Both candidates who were interviewed today were at the last meeting when the school board decided which member would ask which questions. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to hear "I want to ask about what they would do to bring money in to the school system" and think to oneself, "hmm, I should plan an answer for that."

Also no one broke the commitment to interview the other Giles County candidate. A motion is going to be made that they do so at the next meeting. Jesus, Barrett, attend more than one meeting in a blue moon and you might learn something!

Barrett was at the meeting when the questions were handed out. The room was full of witnesses. The folks from TSBA announced that anyone could see the folders, they were public knowledge. Anybody could figure out the kind of things that you would ask a candidate for school director. Maybe something about the way to run a school systen and what are your plans. Duh!

Like most of you, I was not at the meeting, so I can't really say what I would have concluded had that been the case. I will say that, like him or not, Allen has a better than average record of being correct in these matters. I can't help but wonder how you people would have re-acted had it been someone besides B that broached the subject. Time will tell, I suppose.

No one has told who the two were, anyone know?
I would say Dr. Webb should know more how to answer the questions since he has been a director.
BUT I sure hope he don't get it. It's time to have a Giles County person in there.
Then again maybe you need someone that don't know anyone.

The question "How to bring money into the school system" is a strange one. Raise taxes!!
That's not the directors job.

If someone has interviewed before they would know the questions because TSBA would not have given Giles County unique questions. It sounds like the advantage is in having interviewed previously and knowing the right answer to the right questions. Since Dr. Webb has interviewed several times he has the unfair advantage. Thanks for pointing that out Barrett.

the question I have is why are they asking form questions given to them by someone in Nashville, don't our board members have the intelligence to ask their own questions are is the problem just one of laziness. It seems a matter of laziness in paying so much and getting so little in return but that seems to be the pattern of our county officials. We just got rid of a director who was good at raising money we sure don't need his clone.

If you have PES you can watch the board meeting in the evening. During the meeting questions were not stated, but to be discussed at the work session. Now if the people that are saying questions were read out loud that means they had to be at the work session. I'm not aware of any of the candidates being there for the work session. I just hope the board will come to their senses and not choose someone who puts on a good interview and knows all the right things to say and then be a Tee Jackson. He was the perfect interviewee and look what the school system got. A really smart bullhitter.
So questions up front or not, performance is what we have to have.
So for clarity on what Mr. Barrett has to say watch P3TV

Smith and Brown were at the work session. They were also the two candidates interviewed yesterday.

Doug Ead said he was going to make a motion at the next meeting that they interview Beverly Murrey.

The question about money into the school state referred to things like applying for grants.

They don't have to depend on the tsba's questions. They were allowed to come up with their own questions and several of them did.

When Mr. Barrett acts like a reporter of news he needs to have first hand knowldege not hearsay. He is giving someone else's view of what happened. If he was going to report on news he needs to see it. This whole subject is based on someone else's view of what happened not his. If he cannot be someone he needs to get someone who will put their name here to report it.

Here the school board is acting like lazy irresponsible children spending thousands of dollars for nothing then showing their dependence on people outside the county to make decisions.

The board had a list of questions themselves but once they saw the list from TSBA they realized the questions were covered. The questions asked were the obvious questions that anyone would ask. I understand 12:42 there is a different in making a statement and making accusations. When you make accusations against someone you need to know the facts not listen to someone elses take on the matter. We all know how much a story changes every time it is told.

Have you ever talked to Mrs. Murrey. You would be amazed at how knowledgeable she is about the school system. She did a lot for teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers and my group maintenance. I have been at board meetings and watched her fight for what she believed in. She was able to find money so we could get a bonus. Amazing how we would be told no money and she would challenge jackson and other board members and find us a bonus. Don't judge someone you don't know. You just might be surprised and how much she knows.

For the person who knows Mrs. Murrey, can you tell me what project the school system was going to do and she compared minutes from meeting before and cost given at next meeting and saved system about $180,000? She doesn't say much because finding mistakes in the budget was her thing. She did that several times when the number genius couldn't see it. And did you know there is an object that many of our student use at school and a lot of people may have that she made a suggestion to a company and they used it but she got nothing for the idea. I would go on but what does things like that matter. And no she wasn't an administrator but I bet she was the only applicant with 4.0 in Masters with supervision and administration.

There may be those on here who remember my first few comments on this blog. Due to preconceived notions, I was openly hostile towards Mr.Barrett. I had never spoken with the man, but I didn't let that stop me from commenting based on who I THOUGHT he was.

After reading with more of an open mind, however, I realized that he genuinely had the taxpayer's best interest at heart. Now, that by no means should lead y'all to think that I always agree with him, far from it. I can understand his point on most things, and I believe he tries to understand ours.

This blog wouldn't be necessary if everyone had the same opinion on everything. I, for one, appreciate the time and effort Allen puts into this.

A polularity contest for the hiring of a superintendent is a good example of why we DO NOT need a charter. There are many, but this one is glaring and obvious. No, the county needs the most qualified and not necessarily the one most popular.
As for term limits for commissioners, I tend to agree. ThosE who have been there over 8 years ought to have to step down and at least skip a term before running again. However, doesn't that fly in the face of allowing people to vote for candidates of their choice?

There were elected School Directors in the past and by comparison I'd say the people elected far better directors than have been appointed by the school boards.
It's not a simply matter of popularity, there has to be some very stringent qualifications met just to be considered. I would much rather see a director chosen by the people than one appointed by the people in Nashville.

Commissioners and county mayor positions do not require a high level of formal education as does a superintendent of schools. Therein lies the difference. The most popular candidate might not have much knowledge about the educational system and should not be elected to a position like that unless he or she can provide the appropriate educational credentials before entering the race.

All elections are popularity contests. We cast our votes for the candidate we like the most. Often, we don't know if he's telling the truth about everything. We like him better than the other guy, however, so we elect him. The most basic of popularity contests.
