Congratulations Bridgeforth, but I can't help but wonder how come PES, Southside and GCHS scores are low, while yours shines?? Either you guys are doing something really good, or there is something fishy going on??

Take a look at this site. It will give you some information that might be informative to all of you and answer some of your questions.

As a member of the staff of Bridgeforth Middle School, I resent someone asking if there is something fishy going on. The teachers, students and administration work very hard to have the best school in the area.

Minor Hill was also in the "Exceptional" category according to the website given in the above comments. I think that is fantastic for both schools. Looks like Richland Middle needs a LOT of work based on how well Richland Elementary is doing and then how poorly the middle school is doing. Great Job Bridgeforth! Keep up the good work! Parents & the community are proud of the job you're doing!

There is a pervasive attitude in this County ... If some one is doing better than others; then, they must be cheating.

I have noticed that the uneducated, unread, uninformed assume that they are to be afforded a lifestyle equal to everyone else; so long as that lifestyle gives them every desire they wish. Rarely do they get off their fattened asses and make a concerted effort to improve themselves. They rather sit on their well trained asses and complain. If someone does better; then they must be cheating.

If they quit bitching and tried to improve themselves; they too would realize that there is much to be gained. And, that life can be very good.

I don't know why I posted this comment in that those to whom it is directed wouldn't understand. But, I do feel better.

Thanks to Bridgeforth for making our children better.

I am just poking when I post what I post. There is no doubt that Bridgeforth is doing a good job. It is widely recognized as the best run school in the county. I would just like to understand how PES, Southside and GCHS can have most of the same students, and the results be so different.

First of all BMS has great teachers and the BEST leadership of any school in this system which is one way to explain the award. The other explanation is TVAAS is based on growth/gains made by the students. When they are coming out of SS behind in grade level then get to BMS where intense instruction is going on the students are able to make 1-2 years of growth very quickly. Get on State Dept website and read about TVAAS data if you would like to understand it better. If I had children at BMS, I would be very proud of the education they would receive there. It is also quite shameful that certain people were not present for the award presentation!

You don't mean Dr. Webb not being there, do you? I am sure he would have been at Richland since that is the only school he cares any thing about. (see $200,000 for a parking lot with all the other needs this county has)

Of course he would have been at Richland. Not only do we have the smoothest parking lot in the county, it's one of the few places where everyone doesn't bitch about him. Where would you go, you jealous dumbass? He's also trying to fix things before they get beyond repair, unlike previous directors. Finally, we have a proactive director and I for one think that's great.

First of all I am not a dumb ass, I am a realist. Webb is suppose to be the director of all of Giles County schools, not the university of Richland only. And pray tell me, what the heck does Richland have to be jealous of....? Oh, I forgot. You have a smooth parking lot and poor academics and Don Story and Dr. Webb taking care of you and the rest of the Board just tagging along.

Your post itself proves you're a dumbass. Where did I say Richland was jealous of anything? I quite sure you are used to forgetting many things, dumbass. Of course Dr.Webb is the director of all Giles County schools, but you have to start somewhere. If other directors had started one school at a time, we wouldn't be in the mess we are now concerning the state of disrepair. Anything else I can clear up for you? Don't be ashamed to ask.

From one dumb ass to another...you don't have a clue about the school system and how it works..a $200,000 parking lot for one school when the system has so many needs and $50,000 in his great balanced budget next year for the entire remainder of the system. Not quite fair and equal treatment is it? And read what I said real closely...what does Richland have that the remainder of the system should be jealous of? Nothing! Richland has a warped sense on entitlement and they always have had this attitude.

A new parking lot for one thing. And I believe you are the one who should read your post more closely. You said, " And pray tell me, what the heck does Richland have to be jealous of....?."
(BTW, that should have been just "prey tell", not "prey tell me." In any language, that says that Richland is jealous of something. You evidently went to Giles County.

I guess you were all for GCHS's fancy electronic sign when they were the first to get one. I believe that was under Jackson's watch, was it not? I'm sure we couldn't have used that money anywhere else at the time, now could we? Again, all you're doing is solidifying the fact that you are a dumbass. That's cool, though. If you can live with it, I most certainly can.

Friday, May 09, 2014 9:59:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok dumb ass, electronic signs at BOTH schools were bought and installed at the same time and yes, that money should have been used for needs for the entire county, not fancy signs for either school. Once again wants before needs and yes I went to GCHS and am sure proud I was able to go there and not the university of North Giles. At least Mr. Jackson did things for all schools, not just Richland even though he did provide a soccer field, a softball field and bleacher improvements on the football field which no other school received. By the way, check your spelling and the proper use of various words before you are critical of other people. By the way, back to the point of this topic, congratulations to Mr. Smith, the entire staff and students of Bridgeforth for this great achievement.

I'm not bitter at all. As a matter of fact, I love my life and I love Giles County. I just get very tired of people like you who are constantly trying to cause trouble. Now how's that for a snide remark? And, as far as Barrett is concerned, I think he earns any negative comments made toward him. It's just rather sad that you can't see it. Come to think of it, practically ALL of the remarks I have made about or to Mr. Barrett have been in defense of myself or one of the victims of his or his one or two followers' "snide" remarks.
You continue to lie and say that I attacked Mrs. Vanzant's opponents. If you want to call it an attack, I will concede that it was directed toward those like you who are attacking and trying to destroy Mrs. Vanzant. Knowing her as I do, I maintain that NOW is not the time to take a chance on anybody else who may or may not be in the pocket of the radicals here in the county. If they didn't deserve what was said, why is it ok for you guys to assault Mrs. Vanzant and expect no rebuttal? Again, I never meant those two men any harm and would appreciate it if you would stop lying about it.

People can be an ass about Bridgeforth all you want to, but it is the best school in Giles County. If you can't handle a black man running a great school and seeing to it that the students are exceptional then you need to get over it. Bridgeforth has the cream of the crop teachers with a man who supports them. They don't get enough recognition. Mr. Smith may have a Sows ear for a school but what's inside is a silk purse.

I have been watching this tread and wanted to find some other testing to see which side was “right”. The state web site is a little difficult to use. So I started looking for others, though it only has 2012 info, I found this site which combines the state numbers in an easy to read format:

http://www.zillow.com/tn/districts/giles-county-437433/ (shows all schools)

http://www.zillow.com/pulaski-tn/schools/bridgeforth-middle-school-78458/ (BMS)

By these TCAP scores BMS falls below the state and county average for MATH, Reading/Language Arts and Science.

You are doing the same thing as the article everyone is arguing about and used a 3rd party for score evaluation.

If you go to the states website:

http://www.tn.gov/education/data/download_data.shtml (A slew of information for you all)

Then click Achievement Files (FYI Updated 04/08/14) you can look at BMS and ALL the state's school scores. I expect like the zillow site, you will see nothing in these numbers that would indicate BMS is “the” or even “one of the” TOP school in the state.

I did notice that Minor Hill scored closely to BMS on the site which sparked this thread, why do they not have their own thread? Also, RES which received notification from the secretary of education as being in the top 10% in the state hasn’t received it’s own thread….why is that?

Though not measurable by these numbers, results indicate that BMS excels at PR (public relations) when compared to other schools.

I will agree with the Monday 8:13 poster that Bridgeforth has proven to be a well disciplined, well run school. I do not agree with their implied characterization that the success is the result of having a "black" man in charge. I have spoken with Mr. Smith and watched his performance in several different situations and I am completely convenienced that his success is a direct result of a straight forward, honest no nonsense consistent character. To paraphrase Dr. King It's the character of the man not the color of his skin. The example set by Mr. Smith could easily be duplicated by others if they were willing to take the heat and exert the energy. Did Mr. Smith accomplish anything at Bridgeforth by himself, of course not it took the sweat of every teacher, staff member and student to have this school rise well above average Mr. Smith simply provided the vision and leadership.

Uh hum. The teachers at Bridgeforth are absolutely no better than the teachers at any other school in the county. The reason BMS excels is because they do have better leadership.

Yeah, that's right. I'm sure Smith teaches every class personally. What a crock. If Smith is the sole reason why Bridgeforth excels, then I guess the opposite is true. Mrs. V is the sole reason the county is in the tank; our sorry-assed commissioners have no hand it the state of affairs. Put a bit of thought into your posts 12:40, and don't take things so personally.

To 5:57. If u think the commissioners are sorry then why don't u run and fix all the problems. It's like I said before, the bit dog always hollars first. It is very easy to judge someone until u sit in their seats. I bet you don't even know how to read a budget and what u have to do to balance it correctly each year. Instead of being against them pray for them to have guidance to do the right thing.

I am very familiar with the budget process since you asked. I would be happy to be on the commission, but I don't have the time one needs to do the job as it should be done. Unlike many of our officials, I believe your schedule should allow for you to attend ALL meetings, not just the ones that are convenient.

I stand by my statement that we have many sorry commissioners and they should be voted out.

11:42 be sure to start pushing buttons when u get in the voting booth. I would be willing to say u don't even know half of the commissioners and couldn't name them with out looking them up so how in the world can u say they are sorry? U owe all of them an apology and I am glad u do not have time to run for a seat because I am afraid you would be embarresed by the out come. I will continue to pray for you with your anger.

This is the first time I've come back to this post in quite some time. I read your comment about Mr. Smith teaching every class...etc.
You should know that nearly all of the teachers in this school system were born, raised and educated here. What makes you think that BMS gets only the select, best teachers? That is naïve.
The buck has to start and stop somewhere. Mr. Smith's leadership is absolutely what separates BMS from the other schools.
Move Mrs. Oaks to BMS, then move Mr. Smith to PES, and see what happens!
Same thing with the county leadership. I agree that we have too many and too many under-educated commissioners, but Mrs. Vanzant gives them little to know direction. She is a poor leader.
The buck starts and stops at the top!
