Meth Labs In Minor Hill But No News Is Good News?????

Authorities in Giles County are investigating after finding two meth sites, including one near a school.

Add to that the timing. In 21 days, law enforcement believes a lot of the money for meth cleanup will be gone, so there is a question about who will then get the bill. And one site is so dangerous no one even knows how much it will cost to clean up.
Walter Chavez is now under arrest for allegedly cooking a lot of meth in his rented garage apartment across the street from Minor Hill Elementary School.
"Luckily school was out," said Giles County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Nations. "We are pretty sure this has been going on for a while. He had a child that attended that school, and obviously their safety wasn't his first concern."
Just a few miles away, off a secluded rural road, another renter named Gerald Melton was arrested on a probation violation for cooking meth. But for the first time in this county a meth cook was storing his meth in a well.
"I interviewed the guy, and he said the bottles were gathering up around the house. So he bagged them up and either by himself or with somebody he thought that putting them in the well was a good idea. And it's not," Nations said.
Officials had to carefully remove the bottles from the well one by one without breaking any, using a giant claw similar to what you might use to grab stuffed animals at a carnival.
Nations ended up pulling 20 bottles of meth out of the well, and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is now testing the water to see if any of the chemicals have seeped into other wells in the area.
The cleanup from this one site could cost several thousand of dollars.
And, soon, no one knows exactly where that cleanup money is going to come from. Federal grants expire July 1. The belief is that there is enough money left for cleanup, just not as much.

Question is why this hasn't been a big news story here?

Cooking meth in Giles County isn't headline news. It has become ordinary. There are more important things to talk about.

7:34 Is that the only way you can take a stab at WAB. You should live around Minor Hill and wonder if the meth would run into your well water.
The sheriff Department is doing a good job finding these meth labs.

And the judges are doing a good job of slapping their hands and putting them on probation!

But the Pulaski City Council put a stop to this when they passed the pseudoephedrine ordinance!! You can not buy the ingredients to make meth without a prescription in Pulaski and their are no other pharmacies in the county. I guess Pulaski city council had better pass a law to stop the sales of any equipment that could possibly be used in the cooking of meth.

I have to ask the same question Barrett did, why hasn't this been on the local news. I checked wksr website and nothing.

You are right 10:04 but do you think that was full coverage since there is no follow up on the possibility of contaminated ground water from the well?

I would like to know if my water is contaminated. Just where in Minor Hill was this well with meth bottles in it? Everyone don't have city water. It doesn't go by every house in the county.

What if most of Minor Hill gets high on drinking their well water?

9:29. You are correct. Without the ingredients the cookers were forced to throw away their lab.

Most people from Minor Hill look like they are high on something anyway. We should give Minor Hill and Elkton to Alabama to save some money.

If you've ever seen the aftereffects of meth use you'd take this issue seriously. The meth epidemic is being reported, the Sherrifs Dept is serious about addressing it, but most people don't give a flip.

Too bad we can't make meth production a capital crime. Then we could have our sudafed, lye for making soap ... all the 'ingredients' we've surrendered in hopes of slowing meth. We're not going to slow it until we get serious with the meth-making criminals. Lifetime incarceration is too expensive, and capital punishment in un-PC.

How about we build an interment camp up in the Alaska wilderness - preferably bear country - then give them a tent & a cooler full of smelly fish. That camp would never fill up & the bears would be happy ... problem solved.

7:36 It is serious and something needs to be done about it. The Sheriff's Department is trying, but a slap on the wrist don't help. The first post on this thread must be making it or just cg wanting to hit at WAB. How are they getting the ingredients since you are suppose to get help from a doctor for it?

2:41 What are you talking about? What has been said about math?
Sounds like you must not like Minor Hill's Commissioners.

You do know Terry Harrwell went to school there a while. Maybe that is why you think people in Minor Hill don't know how to do math. LOL

2:41 I don't live in Minor Hill or have anything against the people there or in any other part of Giles County. A few commissioners and school board members I don't care for or the county mayor.

Also, I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I'm pretty sure copying and pasting that much of the WSMV news story, even while giving them credit, is a copyright violation. It would be the same as posting the entirety of any book (that isn't in the public domain) online and including the author -it's still a copyright violation.

You can't copyright the news or virtually every media outlet in the country would be in trouble. They didn't even have to give WSMV any credit whatsoever. That would be like me witnessing an accident and telling the local media. They could run the story even though they didn't see it.

I think some are missing the point of this post. We have a very serious problem and for the most part it seems very few outside of law enforcement are taking it seriously. Certainly the judges are not taking it seriously when the same people are committing the same crimes over and over. The state isn't talking it seriously when they fail to pass more severe laws that directly punish the criminal instead of the innocent citizen.
Without penalties greater that the rewards how can anyone be expected not to get into such destructive criminal activities.
There should be an expression of outrage in every news story every day. The entire ground water supply may be contaminated because one individual chose to behave like a selfish fool. Maybe we will dodge the bullet this time but what about the next time? What plans are there to change anything about this situation?

8:47, you seriously don't know the difference between various people talking about the same event and the words of each story belonging to the individual writers? When someone publishes an article, it belongs to them or their publication. Posting large tracts on a blog or website like this one, without the permission of the copyright holder, is against the law. Obviously, it's done all the time because people don't care, but it still breaks the law. Yes, when something big happens, several different media outlets write stories or report on it, but they don't all use the same article.

A lot of you who are complaining about copyright law fail to take into consideration this blog is not profiting financially, there is what is deemed fair use of copyrighted material without the permission of the holder of the copyright, which by Barrett reporting about the article and giving credit to the source does fall under fair use. I hope no one claiming copyright infringement is a lawyer.

I guess talking about copyrights and attacking WAB is more important than the issue of Meth destroying people, families and the county. WAB has proven to be a big boy able to take care of himself so let him worry about copyrights.

Meth will never go away as long as they make 2 liter bottles and alkaline batteries. It's just to easy to make. Y'all want some?
