New Assistant Director of Schools

I must say that it was with a surprised shock that I received the news that Mr Michael Gonzales had been chosen as the new Asst. School Director.

I was shocked because of his past performances and can feel this is nothing but one big mistake.

I believe as School Board Chairman Mr. Gonzales demonstrated an attitude of such gross arrogance and insecurities that he became a distraction to the whole community. His behavior in having private citizens arrested when they legally refused to yield to his dictatorial demands, then subsequently being less than truthful under oath during the trial. showed such character weakness as to render him unacceptable to hold any leadership role in the Giles County School System. I believe that his behavior and weak leadership as Principal of Elkton School is additional proof this was a big mistake. .

No one should be shocked by this. This decision makes absolutely no sense at all, which is in keeping with most of the other decisions made concerning the leadership of this school system.

Dr Gonzales may not be a people person and make us all feel good about ourselves but he is an excellent money manager, something this school system has not seen in awhile. He was in the process of making much needed changes at Elkton when he left. He is well liked in the transportation department and has made many needed upgrades there. By teaming with Ms. Moore he will be a big asset in balancing the school budget and getting the best bang for our bucks. I am certainly for that. Allen the things that happened back in those days were under the direction of Jackson. I do not think we will see anything like that out of Dr. Gonzales now. He is an asset to the school system. Now let me have it.

I can only hope that you are right 8:19. As School Board Chairman he was Jackson's boss, his failure to do what he knew was right showed the lack of leadership and strength of character that I am now concerned with.

"Under the direction" were not the right words. Jackson was a very shrewd man. He had a way of pulling people in he needed. Very convincing man. He had a lot of influence on decisions made in county government from behind the scenes. To believe he had a lot influence on Dr. Gonzales during that period is not a far stretch.

Good post. I hope you are right.
It would mean a lot more if you had signed your name, but I understand you not doing it because aI'm not going to sign mine.
As I read I thought, is this someone that knows what they are talking about, is this Dr. G. or a member of his family, is this Cindy Young?

Even tho Dr. G was Jackson's boss, most of the board did what Jackson wanted. I always thought most of the blame laid at Jackson's feet.

I do not believe it is a good move. He is a mean and arrogant person who always thinks he is correct. I have heard that he has a real big problem with special education and that his exact words are that "special ed is the downfall of education". This in not a man I want in the position to make decisions for our special needs students.

Although this post is about Dr. Gonzales, I wanted to comment on the announcement of Nancy Dunavant as administrative assistant. It is my opinion that some of the school board members and football boosters will continue to get positions and/or promotions for their efforts in buying the new director.

We have an entire county political system rigged by nepotism & cronyism, capped with attitudes of "gross arrogance & insecurities". The mother of arrogance is incompetence, and we're replete with it, from the top down. So count me as another who is neither surprised nor shocked at our continued political incestuousness ... as if these political bed-buddies could possibly fathom the hire of a proven "outsider" with a little more experiential depth than Elkton School. Come on folks - can we hire an occasional hot-shot free agent instead of our insistence on promoting from within? Our small-minded "leaders" remind me of the phrase, "Fools seldom differ."

In a more ideal world I'd say "give the guy a chance ... if he fails then show him the door." But we're county with zero credibility for demanding/enforcing responsibility. We're left with the option of hoping for the best, which is a dreadful strategy for improving our schools.

Congratulations, Michael! I absolutely love how people think Dr. Gonzales did a horrible job at Elkton. The moment he walked in the door at Elkton, the teachers hated him. Why? Because they actually had to do their jobs! No more messing around! They were actually held responsible to fulfill their duties as educators. During my time at Elkton during Gonzales's reign, all I heard was whining and complaining and how "unfair" it was that they had to perform their jobs at a higher level. The man was nothing but respectful and courteous to me. I guess since he left you can go back to your all day recess. Don't be shills and believe everything you hear about Dr. Gonzales. He will perform his job in an efficient and respectable manner. Once again, congrats!

I wonder if the Mother of the special needs child that left the school campus alone, and gonzo refused to call the police to look for him for fear people would find out, feels the same as 11:06? There is a big difference in getting people to do their jobs and beating down people till they are in tears, then to go around bragging about making a teacher cry.

I'm not shocked but than again I am. So sad for the schools. That man has no common sense what so ever. And now the school system will be right back to the disaster it was when Cindy was in charge before cause Gonzales does everything she tells him to even though she talks down about him behind his back. Already heard from someone who would know that she is back to dictating again on the hill. Picking out her new office and telling others where they will be. Looks like the new director maybe just another puppet while Cindy runs the show by manipulating the board again. Such disappointing news. I'm thinking it maybe time to move my child to Cornersville.

It's time for every parent, just like 4:07, to consider getting their children out of the GC "education" system. Our county can't even manage solid waste disposal; how on earth do you think they can manage education? Either watch the disaster unfold with your kids in the system, or bring them home & consider the alternatives. The educrats on the hill are the problem - not the solution. I'd sure like to see our good teachers revolt but unfortunately they have to lay low to get their retirement.

Most on the hill are not educrats. It's just a few who only want power and prestige. The problem is those few running things by manipulating people behind others backs and everybody knows who they are. But nobody will speak up cause of fear of loosing their job. It almost happened before and probably will this year if this appointment is how things are going. The teachers in the schools are devastated with this news.

I agree with 9:01, I lost all respect I had for Gonzo the day he let that special needs child leave that building and thought it was funny. He loved to humiliate teachers and make them cry. The teachers there were not angry and whining because they had to do their job. It was because he had no people skills and treated his teachers with no respect. He picked on certain teachers more than others and did his best to make working for him a nightmare. I feel sorry for the people of Giles county now that he is going to have all the power he wants.

They are devastated and yes they should have spoke up. So many had the chance to. But people here will let others just keep on controlling the system so none should complain. The School Board and others cannot continue this and it will back fire no doubt. Always does here in good ole Giles County.

It's an embarrassment and really visible of what is happening. Look at who is on board so why would any other position be different. Wait til it hits the fan. Very blind they are and poor Wright is caught up in it, but he does not care, he has a salary no matter what for two years. Two on the board I've known a long time and it is only a "game" to them. Hope the score comes out how they want it, but doubt that. I think they will be surprised. Gonzales ? That speaks for itself.

Sorry Gonzales haters, he is most likely the most intelligent and educated person in the entire school system. He will do well as assistant to the superintendent. He is a numbers guy. He can feed information to his boss and he can take it or leave it.

Anyone can have book sense but if the moral goes down as it has in the past and it is shown to students, parents will be furious. It is about the schools, not Gonzales or Wright and if the students are not first priority, board will be confronted. We as parents are sick of this. Our children are suffering. No matter who is director or assistant, I do not care. My children are first. I am totally disgusted as others are too.

It's just not about education but you are too blind to see. But then it's all about you! If you are proud of who you are and what you do, that's fine. You have to live your life how you choose. Only one you have to face in the end. It is going to be a major challenging year for Giles County.

Interesting all of it is for sure. Some more moves yesterday. Good butt kissers probably. But oh how things will explode soon. Some just do not see. Our decision has been made. Pulling my kids out!

I would not pull your kids out. With this administration, won't be long until crap hits the fan. My kids are staying put and just let one negative outburst or bad moral from school happen. Parents might not be at all the meetings which those are a joke, but parents will contact board members and director. Not that they care any but they sure as hell will hear what we as parents have to say. And no, as a parent, I do not HAVE to talk to Gonzales. Speak to whom I choose. Gonzales is just their lausanne. And we as tax payers have to pay for that. Obvious moves have been made not because of what is needed. Just some butt kissers as 9:13 said. One of my children is attending Bridgeforth this year. Waiting for the changes on that move. Some have predictions and will not be surprised. But my child best be taught and treated correctly.

Why are the parents so eager to get involved now. You had JB and not to many parents cared then. And if you think this error ant board is going to listen to you think again. They are rude and hateful. And old Holt loves to tell how he is watching over his shoulder over how he lied about JB. Giles County education your going to pay dearly. Wright has had 13 plus jobs, Lewis bid rigs and Gonzales is a jerk. And Bill Dunavant's wife has a connection somewhere. And Gonzales and Wright worked at Spring Hill together. Maury County School board glad we hired a Wright to get him out of their hair.h

I was at that meeting also. That was interesting. Gonzales tried to put it on Smith and teachers. If you cannot back teachers with toilet paper, how can you back them for anything else? If people cannot stay in jobs a decent amount of time, I do not see this administration in for no more than two years or because Wright is guaranteed 2 years salary. Both he and Gonzales do not stay too long somewhere. Now unless they do something to cause them to lose it. Giles County is use to that. People that play games mess up sooner or later. Too bad it is the schools that have to suffer in the process. But that goes on other places unfortunately, and it is called POLITICS!

I get the idea that this year is going to be a repeat of the year that Webb was director. The director may be better but the board (or a select few) are running the show. Young is back where she was then and heaven help us but Gonzales has been promoted. If he could not handle getting TP how is he going to do the job of assistant director? Heaven help the school employees and the students of Giles County.
